title Topgene: An artificial Intelligence Approach to a Design Process

summary This work deals with two architectural design (AD) problems at the topological level and in presence of the social norms community, privacy, circulation-cost, and intervening opportunity. The first problem concerns generating a design with respect to a set of above mentioned norms, and the second problem requires evaluation of existing designs with respect to the same set of norms. Both problems are based on the structural-behavioral relationship in buildings. This work has challenged above problems in the following senses: (1) A working system, called TOPGENE (The TOpological Pattern GENErator) has been developed. (2) Both problems may be vague and may lack enough information in their statement. For example, an AD in the presence of the social norms requires the degrees of interactions between the location pairs in the building. This information is not always implicitly available, and must be explicated from the design data. (3) An AD problem at topological level is intractable with no fast and efficient algorithm for its solution. To reduce the search efforts in the process of design generation, TOPGENE uses a heuristic hill climbing strategy that takes advantage of domain specific rules of thumbs to choose a path in the search space of a design. (4) TOPGENE uses the Q-analysis method for explication of hidden information, also hierarchical clustering of location-pairs with respect to their flow generation potential as a prerequisite information for the heuristic reasoning process. (5) To deal with a design of a building at topological level TOPGENE takes advantage of existing graph algorithms such as path-finding and planarity testing during its reasoning process. This work also presents a new efficient algorithm for keeping track of distances in a growing graph. (6) This work also presents a neural net implementation of a special case of the design generation problem. This approach is based on the Hopfield model of neural networks. The result of this approach has been used test TOPGENE approach in generating designs. A comparison of these two approaches shows that the neural network provides mathematically more optimal designs, while TOPGENE produces more realistic designs. These two systems may be integrated to create a hybrid system.

summary Hypermedia uses the hypertext style of interactive navigation through computer-based multimedia materials to provide access to a wealth of information for use by teachers and students. Academic disciplines concerned about the enlightenment of future designers of the built environment require an additional medium not yet available in hypermedia - interactive 3-D computer models. This paper discusses a hypermedia CAI system currently being developed at the University of Hong Kong for use in architectural education. The system uses interactive 3D computer models as another medium for instructional information, and as user orientation and database access devices. An object oriented, 3-D model hierarchy is used as the organizational structure for the database. A prototype which uses the system to teach undergraduate architecture students about a traditional Chinese temple is also illustrated. The prototype demonstrates the use of a computer as the medium for bilingual English and Chinese instruction.

summary During the three year period 1990-1992, the research activity carried out in the Typological Laboratory has been focused on two specific themes: flexibility and typological innovation in dwelling-areas and features of the bathroom for disabled users. These themes reflect two among the chief subjects calling the attention of the Residential Building Committee of the Ministry of Public Works to which - as everybody knows - the Laboratory is subordinated. Both themes have been approached through specific application pro rams which took as reference points, respectively, the Programm of EUROPAN Competitions and the proposals for bringing up to date.

title COMMUNICATING WITH LAYPEOPLE

summary The purpose of the architect's tools is, as generally stated, to help the architects themselves to develop and visualize their spatial ideas and intentions. But the tools can also be used to communicate with other groups of professionals and with laypeople. This paper deals with the question how the choice of tools can effect the communication between laypeople and architects. It also stresses the need of combining different media in order to create the best conditions for user's participation. If the users will be able to influence the planning of an environment they must understand the "language" of the medium and have the ability to use it themselves. Models on diverse scales, and first of all the scale 1:1, fulfil these demands better than drawings. There are distinct limitations of the full-scale model, when it comes to give the users a comprehension of the entire mock-up, and thus models on smaller scales are required. Limitations of both full-scale and small scale models concerning visualizing the exterior and the building's interaction with the environment could possibly be worked out with the help of computer technique.

summary This contribution deals with the question, what the simulation in full-scale can convey to the architecture students within their architecture studies. Apart from some exeptions it is the built space that is the subject of all and every planning work, and it is then at the latest that all the advantages and shortcomings are uncovered. Exchange of experience has greatly encouraged us to take all measures necessary for an immediate provisional operation. Working experience was of considerable significance regarding reconstruction work having repeatedly been postponed ever since 1988. This paper deals with the Vienna full-scale laboratory in its ultimate form and all the equipment designed therefore. Summarizingly, the further measures for operation are being considered.

title A NEW SCANNING SKY SIMULATOR

summary A sky simulator has been developed to study daylighting systems on scale models (diffuse component of daylight). This apparatus is of a completely new concept (scanning sky simulator) and has numerous advantages in comparison with similar devices. It allows in particular the reproduction of any sky condition and distinguishes itself by easy calibration, reduced maintenance and moderate electric consumption. The simulator is equipped with a measuring and visualisation system which allows the user to simultaneously carry out quantitative studies (profile of daylight factors) and qualitative studies (visual lighting effects). In this paper, a description of the system and its functioning as well as an application example are given.

summary The first step made at the ETSAB in the computer field goes back to 1965, when professors Margarit and Buxade acquired an IBM computer, an electromechanical machine which used perforated cards and which was used to produce an innovative method of structural calculation. This method was incorporated in the academic courses and, at that time, this repeated question "should students learn programming?" was readily answered: the exercises required some knowledge of Fortran and every student needed this knowledge to do the exercises. This method, well known in Europe at that time, also provided a service for professional practice and marked the beginning of what is now the CC (Centro de Calculo) of our school. In 1980 the School bought a PDP1134, a computer which had 256 Kb of RAM, two disks of 5 Mb and one of lO Mb, and a multiplexor of 8 lines. Some time later the general politics of the UPC changed their course and this was related to the purchase of a VAX which is still the base of the CC and carries most of the administrative burden of the school. 1985 has probably been the first year in which we can talk of a general policy of the school directed towards computers. A report has been made that year, which includes an inquest adressed to the six Departments of the School (Graphic Expression, Projects, Structures, Construction, Composition and Urbanism) and that contains interesting data. According to the report, there were four departments which used computers in their current courses, while the two others (Projects and Composition) did not use them at all. The main user was the Department of Structures while the incidence of the remaining three was rather sporadic. The kind of problems detected in this report are very typical: lack of resources for hardware and software and for maintenance of the few computers that the school had at that moment; a demand (posed by the students) greatly exceeding the supply (computers and teachers). The main problem appeared to be the lack of computer graphic devices and proper software.

summary A brief description of the development of the Mock-up System (MUS) in the context of the Wageningen training program. The students are first taught some keywords in understanding of the building process. They are then trained to express how they want to live (theory) and later on they confront themselves with what they have built in the MUS (practice) . Besides being an educational tool, the MUS is used for pre-building evaluation and research questions. The drawbacks or limitations of the system (outdoor reality versus indoor simulation) and future use by different target groups are also discussed in this paper. The power of the MUS is, and will continue to be, the concrete building of communicational results and the generation of communication by doing so.

title TOOLS RECONSIDERED: SIX AFFIRMATIONS

summary This paper intends to formulate and discuss some unavoidable questions about the use of drawings, models and other tools by architects and other people concerned with architectural projects. These questions are presented as provocative affirmations: Every tool is an obstacle. Every tool is a trap. There is no complete tool. Fast tools shorten the time for reflection. Better tools don't automatically produce better architecture. Every real building betrays previous drawings, models, etc.The article shows that the choice of tools and the manner of their application are not innocent, that - independantly from the working-situation - tools must be considered from a critical standpoint and with particular attention to complementarities between several tools. We finally identify the development, discussion and valuation of concrete spatial qualities as the most difficult stake of such indirect working methods.

title Eve’s Four Faces-Interactive surface configurations

summary Eve’s Four Faces consists of a series of digitally animated and interactive surfaces. Their content and structure are derived from a collection of sources outside the conventional boundaries of architectural research, namely psychology and the broader spectrum of arts and culture. The investigation stems from a psychological study documenting the attributes and social relationships of four distinct personality prototypes; the “Individuated”, the “Traditional”, the “Conflicted” and the “Assured”. (York and John, 1992) For the purposes of this investigation, all four prototypes are assumed to be inherent, to certain degrees, in each individual; however, the propensity towards one of the prototypes forms the basis for each individual’s “personality structure”. The attributes, social implications and prospects for habitation have been translated into animations and surfaces operating within A House for Eve’s Four Faces. The presentation illustrates the potential for constructed surfaces to be configured and transformed interactively, responding to the needs and qualities associated with each prototype. The intention is to study the effects of each configuration and how it may be therapeutic in supporting, challenging or altering one’s personality as it oscillates and shifts through the four prototypical conditions.
