summary Many cities in China today are in the midst of a profound architectural transformation. Among these rapidly developing cities, most of them are many centuries old, possessing rich historical architecture of distinct local traditions. However, the ancient buildings and the neighborhood are disappearing quickly, because of the wholesale demolition for urban development or many years of neglect. In this paper, the use of computers in reconstruction of ancient buildings is briefly discussed with some case studies. The advanced computer technology provides a powerful tool for the ancient architecture preservation and reproduction. It makes the reconstruction engineering more efficient, true to the original, and low cost.

summary Information technology has become so powerful that what is conventionally called CAD might evolve to iAD (Internet Aided Design) (Zhou 2000). For Internet applications in the AEC industry, most of the efforts and success have been concentrated on project management and collaboration, while in the design and engineering consulting area, limited progress has been made. At the same time, contemporary development has not changed the nature of the fragmentation of the AEC industry. Based on previous research of surveys of development of Internet applications in the AEC industry (Zhou 2001), and the proposal of conceptual model of Internet-based engineering consulting in architecture (Zhou2002), we try to apply these theories and concepts into a specified area, steel construction consulting for architects. In previous research, first of all, we defined the contents and scope of steel construction consulting and their potential application. Second, we proposed a solid working model covering structure organization, audience, services provided and technology. In this research, a web-based application will be out by prototyped by conducting a conceptual design consulting in steel structure in order to show the whole process of how this Internet-based consulting model works.

summary The internet is becoming increasingly more valuable in the field of architectural design that what we conventionally called CAD might soon be changed to iAD (internet Aided Design) (Zhou and Krawczyk 2000). In order to have a clear vision of what iAD will be or could be, we should first examine what is currently available. This research focuses on an investigation of selected web vendors, which are typical and most influential in providing internet related services for the AEC industry. Our purpose for doing this survey is: to understand the progress and development of internet application in the AEC industry, identify the technology used in this area, determine the advantages and deficiencies of current practice and develop a base for future research in proposing a evolutionary model of internet Aided Design for architecture.

summary Conventional CAD systems rarely provide automated conversion of general building design representations (BDR) into the simulation domain representations (SDR) required for various detailed simulations. The Simulation Environment for Modeling Performance (SEMPER) project has demonstrated such an automated mapping for buildings with orthogonal geometries. This paper further illustrates automated mapping for buildings with complex (non-orthogonal) geometry.

summary Cristine Boyer, author of CyberCities, has addressed some of the most difficult issues confronting design education today. It can be surmised from Boyer that digital technology has unlocked two areas related to urban and architectural design experimentation. First, symbolic representation, especially high level representation, along with its associative development, becomes addressable through digital means. Second, the translation of these symbolic compositions is significantly enhanced by emerging digital capabilities. It appears that the development of these two areas becomes the focus of contemporary “creativity” It is also predictable that the resulting discontinuous (logical) link in the design process (processes of symbolic development and translation) is where the designer intervenes. This paper explores “creativity” as made possible by digital technology. Methodology: Experimental digital design processes are examined and evaluated for their ability to assist in understanding the place of animation in the design process. These student projects investigate the evolving capabilities of design through animation.

summary Reflection on three decades using computing at JMU, to teach survey techniques to planners, with application to community research projects, reveals that each computing "learning" threshold/milestone enabled each protagonist (research lecturer, planning student, professional and community-stakeholder),"to learn" more broadly. This facilitated more sensitive data-gathering-so empowering respondent/residents with more control to define data to influence urban policy. The seventies' mechanical processing and limited computing experience restricted data quality/depth. Hand-processing 'edge punch cards' recorded enriched variety and depth. Learning computing from Maths lecturers enabled students to learn to control SPSS program and data files. Maths lecturers' withdrawal necessitated the authors' learning, which brought control of the whole process, so facilitating informal inductive interviews-more open to respondents' control over topics to be discussed. Planners learning 3DCAAD-modelling, learned to conceptualise spatially. Community members used CAAD with greater ease, possibly through greater Internet and games experience. Free, EU-funded, private, government, and so on training schemes for Merseysiders, may enfranchise them to define and submit their own demands regarding urban regeneration, directly, through new technological channels (opened by Local Authorities). And new partnering, with private, public and developer agencies may drive these initiatives home.

title Designing Collaborative Environments for Strategic Knowledge in Design

summary This paper considers aspects of strategic knowledge in design and some implications for designing in collaborative environments. Two key questions underline the concerns. First; how can strategic knowledge for collaborative design be taught and second; what kind of computer-based collaborative designing might best support the learning of strategic knowledge? We argue that the support of learning of strategic knowledge in collaborative design by computer-mediated means must be based upon empirical evidence about the nature of learning and design practice in the real world. This evidence suggests different ways of using computer-support for design learning and acquistion of strategic design knowledge. Examples of research by the authors that seeks to provide that evidence are described and an approach to computer system design and evaluation proposed.

summary This paper studies the computer in teaching drawings in architecture schools. To accomplish it differences are set between expression and representation drawings and three periods are analyzed from the perspective of historical evolution of representation drawing and relationship with architects. The first period is Renaissance and we focus on the appearance of the Perspective Method. The second is the VVIII century and the development of the Projective Method. The third is the XX century and the advent of graphic computation. The information technology in architecture course must be regarded as issue for the entire institution. We conclude that the challenge for Architecture Schools is to create ways of using computer in the architectural project process. This research show that the possibilities of teaching break away with the importance given to the projective drawing and setting the three dimensional environment as the starting point for the process of architectonic creation.

summary The development of advanced information and telecommunications networks have created new kinds of socioeconomic activities, while changes in values and increases in cultural diversity within cities have made manifest the need for planning schemes based on flexibility and responsiveness to change. In contrast to motorization that completely altered the urban scene, IT has quietly merged into the existing urban structure, causing little change in appearance. Nevertheless, the exponential growth of the Internet and the increase in the use of computers have had profound effects on urban activities. Urban planners have responded by developing supportive tools such as network-based geographic information systems (GIS) as well as online public participation programs (PPP) and other types of groupware. These technologies automate data handling, reduce planning time, and increase the opportunity for public participation. The social life of cities has also been changing.

summary Physical space is the material object of spatial planning and urbanism. It comprises, traditionally, zonesadapted to activities and channels of communication providing links between zones, catering to transport. Orvarious types of buildings, if one includes architecture. Virtual space opened by ICT, still is less familiar. Itis, after all, "no more than abstract flows of electronic signals, coded as information, representation andexchange" (Graham). This partly explains the frequent use of metaphors to describe it, among them spatialmetaphors (Graham, 1997). In dealing with the interactions between physical and virtual space, spatialmetaphors tend to obscure the issues and therefore better be avoided.Physical and virtual space must be defined as distinct entities. After all, only utopians believe in urbandissolution with all information supposed to become available at all times and places to all people. What arethe most important interactions between physical and virtual space?

summary The rapid onset of information technologies has changed ways we do things and how we view the world. Computation already pervades many aspects of daily life through subtle augmentations and by changing our tools and our professions. Moreover, information technology accelerates the pace of our activities, its speed outstripping our capacity to digest its product. The changes brought on by this deluge force its chroniclers to create new terms. Neologisms spring up daily, often only adding to the confusion. Conversely, old terms take on new meanings. Their familiarity fading under the rush of new technologies, new disciplines. We are bombarded with a hasty terminology all delivered with the urgency – perhaps intent – reserved to advertising and propaganda.

summary This work is part of a long term research programme (Brown and Horton, 1992; Brown and Nahab, 1996; Bassanino, 1999) in which tests and studies have been carried out on various groups of people to investigate their reaction to, and interpretation of different forms of architectural representation. In the work described here a range of architectural schemes were presented using particular representational techniques and media. An experiment was then undertaken on two different groups; architects and lay people. They were presented with a number of schemes displayed using the various techniques and media. The responses are summarised and some comments are made on the effect of computers on perceiving architecture and on communicating architectural ideas arising from an analysis of the responses.
