title The Combination of Design Media and Design Creativity _ Conventional and Digital Media
source CAADRIA 2007 [Proceedings of the 12th International Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia] Nanjing (China) 19-21 April 2007
summary Creativity is always interested in many fields, in particular, creativity and design creativity have many interpretations (Boden, 1991; Gero and Maher, 1992, 1993; Kim, 1990; Sternberg, 1988; Weisberg, 1986). In early conceptual design process, designers used large number of sketches and drawings (Purcell and Gero, 1998). The sketch can inspire the designer to increase the creativity of the designer’s creations(Schenk, 1991; Goldschmidt, 1994; Suwa and Tversky, 1997). The freehand sketches by conventional media have been believed to play important roles in processes of the creative design thinking(Goldschmidt, 1991; Schon and Wiggins, 1992; Goel, 1995; Suwa et al., 2000; Verstijnen et al., 1998; Elsas van and Vergeest, 1998). Recently, there are many researches on inspiration of the design creativity by digital media(Liu, 2001; Sasada, 1999). The digital media have been used to apply the creative activities and that caused the occurrenssce of unexpected discovery in early design processes(Gero and Maher, 1993; Mitchell, 1993; Schmitt, 1994; Gero, 1996, 2000; Coyne and Subrahmanian, 1993; Boden, 1998; Huang, 2001; Chen, 2001; Manolya et al. 1998; Verstijinen et al., 1998; Lynn, 2001). In addition, there are many applications by combination of conventional and digital media in the sketches conceptual process. However, previous works only discussed that the individual media were related to the design creativity. The cognitive research about the application of conceptual sketches design by integrating both conventional and digital media simultaneously is absent.

title Virtual Terragni: CAAD in Historical and Critical Research
source Birkhäuser, Basel
summary Traditionally architectural models were static creations but now through CAAD, models can be created which are dynamic and easily manipulated. This book shows how the electronic medium can be used to critically reconstruct unbuilt projects, looking in particular at projects by the famous Italian rationalist, Giuseppe Terragni. Four villas and several monument buildings are visually represented, their structures and functions examined and assessed using CAAD.

source Proceedings of THE-CAAD3 Symposium, Eindhoven
summary Students currently in schools of architecture will be at the peak of their careers around the year 2000. The pressure on the schools to provide an education and training which will stand the student in good stead between now and then is considerable. In an increasing number of departments of architecture and building science, importance is being placed on the concept of modelling: i.e. the development and use of models of the operational behaviour and aesthetic character of design proposals which will allow appraisal of how real buildings will performing the real world.

title Artificial Neural Network Spaces
source International Conference on Generative Art
summary In the processes of continues functional differentiation the contemporary society increasingly displays the characteristics of complex, distributed systems. In this condition architecture can no longer rely on top-down reductionist methodologies in ignoring the constituting importance of contextual parameters. The present paper describes how Artificial Neural Networks can be employed to design with-in the underlying logic of our society -the logic of distributed systems. In computer simulations the paper explores the capability of ANN to Self-organization: Neural Networks Architectures absorb and adapt vast amount of urban data in order to adjust their organization to exterior changes through interior structural reconfiguration, thus producing adaptive spatial formations.

title Turing's Machines
source Architectural Computing from Turing to 2000 [eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 0-9523687-5-7] Liverpool (UK) 15-17 September 1999, pp. 25-32
summary We outline four types of machine that informed Turing's investigations: the subversion machine, the improving machine, the perfect machine and the dysfunctional machine. We show how each deals with the issue of dysfunction, and argue that in design the ways that machines do not work can be just as illuminating as how they do. In this investigation we call on the reflections of the surrealists who sought the incongruity of object and context as the means to understanding the anarchical play of design.

title Some Phenomena of Design Thinking in the Concept Generation Stage Using Computer Media
source CAADRIA 2000 [Proceedings of the Fifth Conference on Computer Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia / ISBN 981-04-2491-4] Singapore 18-19 May 2000, pp. 255-263
summary Today, the computer media has become more and more important in design process. It is not only used as kind of simulated and presented media. Also, various kinds of research start developing the computer aided design system and probing the possibility of using computers in creative activities. In resent years, many studies concentrate on the forepart of design, the concept generation stage, but most of them are based on conventional media such as papers and pencils. This study attempts to probe the different design thinking phenomenon produced through concept generation by computers and by conventional media; and the effects of the development and presence of design concept generation resulted from the merits and features of the computers themselves. The methodology used here is protocol analysis of gaining subject's verbal data in think-aloud way and then encoding it to analyze. The outcome of this study is to find some phenomena of design thinking when using computers to progress concept generation, and suggest further studies relating to the topic of methodology.
