title Event driven product development – collaboration and learning
source Dept. of Technology and Social Sciences, Technical University of Denmark
summary This dissertation is the result of the research project “Event-Driven Product Development: Collaboration and Learning”. It is an industrial Ph.D. project carried out in collaboration between the company Danfoss A/S, and the Institute of Technology and Social Sciences at the Technical University of Denmark; now the Department of Manufacturing Engineering and Management. The research was funded partly by Danfoss A/S and partly by the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences (ATV), who have named the project EF 609. The research project began in February 1996. I have had three supervisors: Thomas Binder and Jacob Buur both of whom represent Danfoss, and Lauge Baungaard Rasmussen from the Institute of Technology and Social Sciences at the Technical University of Denmark.

title Digital Proceedings: Making CAAD-Knowledge Widely Available
source Reinventing the Discourse - How Digital Tools Help Bridge and Transform Research, Education and Practice in Architecture [Proceedings of the Twenty First Annual Conference of the Association for Computer-Aided Design in Architecture / ISBN 1-880250-10-1] Buffalo (New York) 11-14 October 2001, pp. 380-385
summary This paper deals with the efficiency of publication means within the scientific community. Scientists spend a substantial part of their total time in visiting meetings and conferences, reading publications, writing emails, etc. Thus any improvements in the communication processes, in particular technologies which minimize non-value adding activities such as tedious retrieving of source material from library shelves, could have far-reaching (positive) consequences. In this respect a customized solution for the digitalization of paper-based conference proceedings is presented. The process of creating electronic copies of papers - disseminating knowledge on CAAD - in pdf-format is described as well as the respective decisions which were taken in this context.

title The comparison between visual thinking using computer and conventional media in the concept generation stages of design
source Automation in Construction 10 (3) (2001) pp. 319-325
summary The computer, the new media, reaches out and influences the behavior of design as it does almost every facet of life. In recent years, much research into the development of computer-aided design has looked at the concept generation stage of the design process. Most of these applied studies have focused on the testing of computer systems. On the other hand, there are also many studies on the visual thinking and cognitive behavior of designers while sketching or drawing in the stage of concept generation. From the synthesis of the two aforementioned disciplines, we can find that there exists a point of deficiency. That is, the cognitive research about designers using computers as sketching media is absent. It is this area that is discussed in the current paper. The fundamental analytic data of this research is the visual process chronicled from the sketching of subjects. The analytic data is the verbal data from the questions that the subjects are asked after sketching. The data is analyzed using three coding schemes. The cognitive appearance while designers generating concepts with computers or conventional media are propounded and discussed in this research.

title The multiuser workspace as the medium for communication in collaborative design
source Automation in Construction 10 (3) (2001) pp. 303-308
summary The design process requires collaboration between organizations and individuals. This paper considers recent research in collaborative design system, called the multiuser workspace. The group-oriented multiuser workspace is a design environment where the collaborative work progresses smoothly between participants in the architecture design process. The design in the multiuser workspace is processed while participants interact with each other. This paper describes the research project concerning the multiuser workspace with interuniversity collaboration, shows the possibility of the multiuser workspace and investigates its problems.
