summary We are currently exploring the concept of mediated discourse in relation to an architectonic intervention and urban transformation project in an educational project and elective course. Led by faculty and artists, students are offered the ability to experiment with various media in the design and development of a multidisciplinary discourse. A web-based elearning environment also allows the students’ activities to form part of a larger discourse that takes place among all participants, including the public. In this paper, we describe the concept of mediated discourse and the various dimensions we distinguish, we present the educational project and its various aspects and participants’ roles, we consider the internationalisation of this educational project in a future instance of the course, and we describe the characteristics of the web environment in the context of an educational and software development project for a multimedia learning environment to support group work and discourse.

summary While distributed or collaborative design studios have a long pedigree (Donath 1999), there seldom arises the chance to test the limits of the concepts implied by the idea of the physically separated design team. The indigenous differences of culture, schedules and language accentuate this. The authors entered into an experimental design exercise that would seek to explore the range of dualities, which are often encumbered by such studios owing to their very nature. As an additional catalyst in the experiment, a design topic was chosen which reflected the nature of the studio thereby creating a Gödelian knot of self-referentiality.

summary The sketch is the embodiment of the architectural discussion. It incorporates rapidness and fuzziness and as this it is an object of interpretation. The interesting thing there is the question, if the usage of VR/AR already in the early phases of a design can have an impact for the quality of a design-process. Examples like VRAM (Regenbrecht et al., 2000) or TAP (Seichter et al., 2000) showed that there is a huge potential for research. The sketch as one of the parts of an early design is tightly coupled with cognitive aspects and communication. Pictured by a sketch is just a snapshot of what have to be discussed in the ensuing design procedure. The intention behind this work is an exploration about a medium which is not yet adapted to the digital world (Myers et al., 2000) and it can be easily be described with the words of Harald Innis: Mankind constantly being caught in his own traps: language and systems, developed and most difficult to break down. (Innis, 1951)

title A 3D Point-cloud-based Verification of As-built Construction Progress

summary Point clouds were overlapped to reveal differences between two working days. The same type of comparison was made between 2003.2.11 and 2003.12.11. Comparisons between the original schedule and real schedule (the catch-up schedule) were also made. The overlapping test provides one of the most comprehensive checking methods of the as-built progress in a digital format. Examples show that the overlapping comparisons help identify the addition and removal of objects scanned from 50 meters away. The geometric information is feasible for construction inspection and records. Limitations and benefits of overlapping are discussed.

summary The Internet connects the globe as a whole and at the same time pushes the competition increasing dramatically. Multidiscipline and distributed collaborative design-build in architecture, engineering and construction (A/E/C) companies can gain foster competitive advantage, improved designs, and more effective management of construction facilities. However collaboration can often fail, since it involves different professions who often hold different goals and also one-off organizations also build obstacles to collaboration. This paper presents a web-based agent framework to support communication, to facilitate shared understanding amongst the participants and to inspire teamwork. This paper proposes a multi-agent social interaction framework as the communication model of design-build projects. The conceptual framework emp hasizes process-centric learning and the creation of group agreements within design-build collaborative activities, which help facilitate conflict migration. In addition, based upon web agent technology, this communication framework providing an intelligence distribution opportunity for the for the A/C/E industry to introduce a new and innovative paradigm of collaborative design.

title Digital Exploration of Unbuilt Architecture: A Non-Photorealistic Approach

summary This paper presents a new approach to the digital investigation of unbuilt architecture. A navigable world, emulating the architect’s graphic style, is built as a 3D non-photorealistic reconstruction of the unbuilt project. A cinematic journey through this world intermediates the exploration of the architect’s possible mental visualizations during the creative stages. The goals of the proposed approach are: to open new avenues for investigating the conception of architecture, to help architectural students visualize and experience important unbuilt projects that have shaped the practice of architecture, and to popularize lesser-known architects to the general public. The approach stems from the idea that architectural drawings are the artifacts reflecting most accurately the architect’s creative and thinking processes. Anchored in the concept of multi-dimensional space developed by the author, the proposed method uses the original drawing of the artist as the main artifact on which the reconstruction process is based. The present paper concentrates on those aspects related to extracting information from the architect’s drawing and embedding historic knowledge in the 3D reconstruction of the unbuilt project. It calls to attention the idea that technological progress creates tools that the Architect uses to operate with the fundamental concepts of place, space, and time.

summary This work develops their ideas by means of the concept of topologic processual diagram. This threefold concept (topology, process, diagram) is investigated in different areas such Cognitive Science, Logic (Mathematics and Semiotics) and Philosophy, in order to enrich the analyse of its actuation in the field of Topology. In this analysis, the topologic processual diagram is described as an operative-representational medium of spatial structural relations (the object's topology), with three variables: thought, space and time. Finally, this concept is investigated within the realm of the project and representation in Architecture, building up a critical dialogue with diagrams, its use and reference, as performed by paradigmatic contemporary architects.

summary This paper introduces the pedagogic experience of a course in the Visual Arts Bachelor Degree Program offered by the Facultad de Arquitectura Diseño y Urbanismo at the Universidad Nacional del Litoral, in Santa Fe, Argentina. The class was taught using a combination of Present and Semi-Present attendance through the Multimedia Center of Distance Education (CEMED), and with the support of the Multimedia and Didactic Device Laboratory for the Education (LIDEM), belonging to the said university and school. The workshop dealt with the integration of Digital Media into the Artistic-Creative and Teaching-Learning processes, Despite the lack of electronic equipment of last generation and in the necessary quantity, we achieved interesting and successful results that are relevant to this congress' topics.

summary In 1996, the Taller Galli precariously initiated the diffusion and communication of it academic production and researches as well as the artistic and creative thoughts in relationship to other subjects, placing us on a wider space for the cultural, urbanistic and architectural debate towards the community in general. That was how we decided to start this independent and self-managed editorial project. The Matéricos Periféricos web site (www.matericosweb.com) emerged when the produced material had overdone the diffusion and debate frequency and expectation of the paper magazine. We construct a complementary space to the paper magazine that can spread faster, interactively and widely everything that is published on the paper magazine and other subjects that could not be published for monetary reasons or simply due to real time. Nowadays, Matéricos Periféricos is a net that is trying to install a debate on the contemporary Latin-American culture.

summary Schools of architecture in North, Central and South America offer admissions on the basis of grade point average and standardized exams on academic aptitude. These indicators may describe the aptitude of students as far as general academic performance is concerned but are limited on describing the creative potential of the applicant. The authors of this paper question this practice and suggest the development of a 3dimensional environment for the assessment of the creative aptitude of future students. The paper also describes the implementation of a prototype of the testing environment and subsequent experimentation.

summary Schools of architecture offer admission based on a score system that combines school grade point average (GPA) and standardized testing. Unfortunately, GPA values can give an indication on the academic aptitude of the student but they tend to fall short on describing the potential of the student as a designer. The same may be said of standardized tests that address general verbal, mathematical and analytical skills but lack an adequate framework for measuring all the skills that aid us in performing design processes. This paper will elaborate on the feasibility of developing an on-line testing environment that may address the assessment of fundamental 3-dimentional skills as an additional indicator of potential success in the field of architecture.

summary The idea of developing a framework, to integrate design studios and computer graphics, is derived from the nature of architectural design, which has always combined creativity and technology. Furthermore, as computers are being increasingly used in design studios, a systematic digital pedagogy, which can take advantage of the strengths of computers in all stages of design, should be developed simultaneously to facilitate learning. This paper attempts to propose a playful and effective digital design process that can be flexibly applied to computer-based design studios and design-based computer graphics courses. The pedagogical framework is based on a set of digital design games that follows a general design process presented by the author. First, the components of digital design games will be defined and the relations of those game components will be clearly depicted. Then, a framework will be proposed, followed by the use of an example demonstrating applications of the framework. Continual advancements in digital technology have created generation gaps among teachers at architectural schools. A structured digital design process can help teachers, with varying levels of computer-capabilities know what, when, and how, adjustments should be made to achieve the goal of digital design education.

title Afterword - Why Peer Review Journals?

summary More than 50% of academic libraries' budgets are spent on peer review journal subscriptions [1]. One may wonder why these publications (often) with plain and dull covers (unlike those attractive, colorful magazines on newsstands), small subscription base and specialized readership carry such importance. The reason is simple. Publishing a journal for interested researchers, academics, and practitioners benefits the advancement of knowledge. To be recognized as an academic subject, a discipline must publish a peer review journal. Unlike magazines with short shelf lives for general reading, peer review journals are archived and referenced within a discipline. These journals serve as a forum for professional intellectual exchange, and as a platform to present cutting edge research. Peer review (refereed) journals give direction to the field and industry. They also help researchers strengthen their academic careers and seek research funding.This article will review basic definitions of peer review and then discuss in detail issues and concerns that emerged in the editing of this issue.

summary In this paper we discuss designing abilities, such as creativity and learning, as abilities that emerge though interaction in cooperative human-machine networks. We concentrate in a design system that can exhibit and support creative behaviour using knowledge learnt through distributed human-machine interaction. In this context, conflict resolution and coordination is a main issue, as well as a main indicator for the creative and adaptive ability of the design system. More specifically, we are going to present a model of coordination developed using learning control and multi-agent systems methodologies and techniques. A prototype system is tested in a virtual collaborative design assignment for simple location and three-dimensional configuration problems.

summary The projects ‘I, Robot’, ‘New Clothes for Robot Albert’ and ‘Robots House’ are three examples of design projects at the institute for industrial building production (ifib) that illustrate the same didactical approach for the training of students. The common principle is characterised by the confrontation of students of architecture with a kind of task, that almost is not related to architecture and that seems rather strange at the first glance. The background of the task allways has a strong technical regard and is defined by other departments. So already the understanding requires an exchange with some experts of these departments and the solution even a close cooperation with them. In most cases the partners are from the field of mechanical engineering or computer science. The common theme in these three projects is robotics, a forward-looking discipline especially interesting because of its wide complexity as well beyond a purely technical comprehension. In the Project ‘I, Robot’ multidisciplinary teams of students used the Not Quite C developer kit and the Lego Mindstorm Robotics system to develop robots for an indoor rally. This project is repeated annualy at ifib and at RWTH Aachen. In the Project ‘New Clothes for Robot Albert’ students of architecture designed and produced a spacial structure and cover for an existing and running humanoid service robot. This robot was developed by the Institute for Industrial Applications of Informatics and Microsystems (IAIM) of Prof. Dr. Dillmann for experimental purposes regarding learning strategies for service robots. In the Project ‘Robots House’ finaly students of the university cooperate with students of the university of applied science to find a concernment of architecture by today’s and future robots. The background is the demand for service robots in homes of handicapped or elder people triggered by the demographic changes; the approach is to consider today’s service robots as well as handicapped in a certain manner. The project is accompanied by the expert for handicapped accessible planning, Prof. Dr. Loeschcke and by scientists of the IAIM around Dr. Markus Ehrenmann.

We demonstrate how these strategies are implemented and employed by authors and learners in the ALE system, the authoring-learning-environment component, currently under development as integral part of the WINDS project.

summary The development of architectural design systems that describe fully the form, structure and behaviour of a design relies heavily on the incorporation of intelligence in the representations, analyses, transformations and transactions used by the computer. Traditionally such intelligence takes either of two forms. The first is a methodical framework that guides actions supported by the design system (usually in a top-down fashion). The second is local, intelligence mechanisms that resolve discrete, relatively well-defined subproblems (often with limited if any user intervention). Local intelligent mechanisms offer the means for adaptability and transformability in architectural design systems, including the localization of global tendencies. This refers both to the digital design technologies and to the historical, cultural and contextual modifications of design styles and approaches.

summary Computer Numeric Controlled (CNC) fabrication machineries are changing the way we design and build. These technologies have increased productivity through greater efficiencies and have helped to create new forms of practice, including increased specializations and broader collaborative approaches. (Kieran Timberlake 2003: 31). However, some argue that these technologies can have a de-humanizing effect, stripping the human touch away from the production of objects and redistributing the associated skills to machines. (Dormer 1997: 103). The (Digital) Craft studio explored the notions of technology and craft to understand how and when designers should exploit the tools employed (both the hand and the machine) during the design and production processes.

Historical periods, places, subjects, courses and authors are the conceptual categories employed to organize the contents. This structure allows an open approach to analize urban and architectural relations in a real or in an imagined context.

summary The potential of fuzzy logic application in simulating of demographic processes by the example of population forecasting task hasbeen investigated. The particularities of population as dynamical system functioning under the condition of uncertainty have beenexamined and fuzzy statement problem has been suggested. The strategy of population forecasting using the method of fuzzy timeseries model has been proposed. The simulations on retrospective evaluation of population are carried out and on the base of the results of these simulations the conclusion avocet the effectiveness of utilization of fuzzy model for demographic forecasting has been model.
