summary This work is a software application where the user will be able to go over a collection of optic art paintings, which are computer generated (they reproduce Victor Vasarely's works style). By selecting two of these paintings, the user will obtain a third one that will inherit their characteristics. The aim of this work is to generate a collection of paintings, which evolve according to the users' taste. For this purpose, we drew the analogies between the genetic evolution of living beings and their natural selection process to adapt themselves to the environment.

summary Driven by digital design tools and production methods, the interplay of theory and practice in architecture is converging on the notion of process. Process definition and process tools are now an essential part of design, design development, fabrication and construction. The word process itself can be interpreted in different ways, as being deterministic or non-deterministic. Computer programming can be understood as a design process and a structuring mechanism. Rather than making finite designs (products), architects are beginning to understand their roles as toolmakers, developing algorithmic processes that incorporate constraints and intents into software / procedures / programming. New methodologies such as parametric-associative design hierarchies are a clear example of semantic design structuring (a form of grammatical ordering); the creation of hierarchical parametric models can be understood as a form of visual programming. In a deterministic sense, it can be argued that if a process is correct and critical, then by definition so will be the product.

summary This paper argues (i) that understanding of a place (especially in heritage environments) requires a level of cultural engagement and (ii) that virtual environments, in their typical current form, fail to provide such engagement. A proposed solution to the issue of cultural presence is to apply the interactive mechanisms commonly used in computer games (social agents, levels of interaction constraint, and task-based manipulation of artefacts) to virtual heritage environments. The hypothesis is that the resulting environment will allow for greater engagement and a more culturally immersive learning environment. Virtual environments also often lack techniques for evaluating the extent to which their design goals are achieved. A proposed secondary outcome is that designers and researchers of virtual environment can also use the above interactive mechanisms for the evaluation of user engagement without simultaneously interrupting the user’s feeling of engagement.

summary Design space exploration is long-standing motivating ideas in computer-aided design. It realises this vision through a model of design states for making and moving amongst states and an organisation of states into a structure called a design space. Using a design space structuring mechanism based on a subsumption relation, this paper sketches a theory called Geometric Typed Feature Structures (GTFS) to preserve the formal properties of the design space movement algorithms for geometry. It also provides the theory for incorporation of user-guided exploration in the design space. Consequently, the clear division between knowledge level and symbol level, such that functional decomposition •• formal symbol level and design •• model symbol level, disappears. We can therefore use the same subsumption relation to structure the design space exploration interactively. Such interactive mapping between knowledge level and symbol level provides the fine-grained opportunities for user intervention in formal design space movement algorithms. In this paper, we summarize this approach with an example of GTFS subsumption process.

summary Navigation is about information that requires visual feedback and spatial orientation in both information representation and userinteraction. Among those, spatial orientation is the primary research question for navigating in 3D information landscape. By inspired by Ware's three control loops, 'spatial metaphors' and 'visual components" are proposed as the fundamental concepts of a navigation framework called 'i-Room'. i-Room is comprised of four constituents-handles, i-Bag, i-Map and Focus/scale. An information landscape based on a repository of diverse digital media of 11 significant civic buildings in Taiwan is designed for testing this navigation framework. An implementation of i-Room based on Muse of navigation realization and their interaction behaviors with spatial metaphors/visual components is also reported in this paper.

summary The class of operations known as “undo” has proven to be a valuable addition to most professional work tools. In practice though, its use is frustrating: undo often undoes too much. Its essential informal semantics are that it returns the user to a prior state by recapitulating all intervening states. Why not give the user greater control over which aspects of a design to undo? An alternative is to seek to reuse prior work in any logically-coherent pattern—user input is a precious commodity. The area of generative systems provides insights in a search for alternatives to undo, in particular that prior user and system actions can be changed and reused in new contexts. We contingently introduce a concept we label as design promotions to describe system designs that demonstrate a tight coupling between interactive authorship and system-led generation, that treat past user actions as valuable intentional statements, and that treat alternative user choices as first-class objects of concern. In practice these three properties emphasize reuse. We briefly survey the current state of undo-like operations and potential candidates for implementing design promotions strategies. Through examples, we demonstrate approaches to realizing undo-like operations over specific representations, especially that of constructive solid geometry.

title Spatial Cognition in Digital Cities

summary Today, digital cities are being developed all over the world. By using a city metaphor, digital cities integrate urban information and create public spaces. However, there are questions as to how to enter the new emerging digital cities, how humans perceive themselves in digital cities, and there are also issues of recognition of the digital city forms? This paper takes the idea of cognition in order to explore the structure of the new spatiality as cyberspace. By exploring the factors relating to human spatial cognition in physical space it is possible to interpret how humans perceive the spatial form of digital cities. By examining spatial experience in physical space, the interface of spatial cognition of interaction between digital cities and physical cities can be investigated. And by taking this approach, we propose an online prototype of a metaphor for a digital city.

summary Safety is an important element of project successes. In the conventional project management, safety planning, as a function, is separated from other functions, such as planning/scheduling function. This separation creates difficulties for engineers to analyze what, when, why and where a safety measure is needed to prevent accidents in a construction activity. Another problem occurs due to the conventional practice of representing project designs using two-dimensional (2D) drawings. In this practice, a user (e.g. an engineer) has to convert the 2D drawings into three-dimensional (3D) mental pictures, and this is a tedious task. If only converting this 2D drawing is a tedious task, combining these 2D drawings with safety planning creates more difficult tasks. In order to address the problems, this paper discusses our research in integrating construction scheduling and safety planning in a 4D environment.

title A Simulation Study on Public Building's Staircase Fault Tolerance

summary This paper applies the concept of fault tolerance to staircase layout plan. Fire or smoke may cause some staircases in a building inaccessible. We argue that architects should assess the result from the possible fault of vertical routes. The capability of tolerating staircase faults depends on space usage, arrangement, and pedestrian attributes. In this study, a mathematical model is constructed. For analysing pedestrian's movement in interior space, we employ Monte Carol simulation and Agent-Based Modelling method in a CAAD environment. It helps us to visualise the dynamic process of agent's evacuation process, and to test the problem of possible staircase faults. Finally, a case study brings some important discoveries.

summary The purpose of this work is to develop needed interaction techniques for understanding the context of a digital city. In this paper, we present a framework in terms of three perspectives: information representation, physical interactions and media space design. We implement tangible media for physical interactions, allowing users to explore a digital city with respect to different positions in time-space in an interactive and intuitive manner. The time-space representation is mapped to physical media space. Our work is demonstrated in a digital 3D museum project for Tainan city in Taiwan.

title Using Mobile Digital Tools for Learning about Places

summary To explore how mobile digital tools can bring students out from isolated classrooms, we tested several for use in design studio site visits. We focused on small, off-the-shelf tools that are inexpensive and easy to upgrade. In this paper we identify the logistical, efficiency, and learning considerations for the selection and introduction of mobile digital tools , with observations about device usability and administration that are applicable to other kinds of technology introduction. We found that adoption of a tool depends on several factors, including ease of use and inconspicuous nature. Compared to traditional tools, most of these tools require a great deal of set-up time before students can use them efficiently. In addition, they require docking with a computer to analyze the information collected in the field. As a result, most of the learning takes place in the studio, rather than in the field. Our eventual goal is to clarify the potentials of place-recording tools, making it easier to gather and use a toolkit for specific situations.

title Architecture as a Reference for the Development of A Cad Lighting Tool

summary As light is increasingly perceived as a factor of quality of urban life, it is not surprising that cultural heritage buildings and even civil engineering works are being more and more often illuminated at night. The designers of the projects are revealing a nocturnal vision of the buildings which is often a reflection of the architecture: rhythm, pattern, evenness, symmetry, composition, axes, and so on. The idea of developing a "lighting-modeller" is based upon this assertion. Thus, if we express the needs in terms of functionalities, we can conclude that the hierarchical structure of the architectural edifice can fit in with a "lighting-structure". As a result, concepts like hierarchy, linking, grouping, networking, linearity-polarity, are the basis of the objects and functions that are effective for the great majority of buildings and projects. This "lighting-modeller" can then lead beyond its simulation capabilities to become a design conception tool: hypothesis and variants are quickly realized and tested, and technical data (illumination data, visual comfort) can be obtained as well.
