summary This communication is part of six other contributions from different authors, which aim to provide an overall discussion of a Brazilian Virtual Design Studio. This paper focuses the tools applied in a VDS within a Latin-American context of public universities with limited budget and its organization. The tools are discussed in three main phases of the exercise: the group formation, the design process, and the debates and crits. Despite the limited resources, we conclude and suggest that such experience should be pursued by other schools in similar conditions.

summary This research utilizes vision-based affective recognition and sensing technologies, which are tested in order to interpret what emotional moods people experience with visual spatial images; these tests help to automatically provide feedback on the natural ways to manipulate affective intelligent communication. That is, the primary objective of this research is to realize an adaptable architectural virtual reality (VR) model whose color attributes can be changed dynamically according to the identified emotional state of the user. Eventually, this research addresses how to capture a specific user’s emotional states through the system and use it for modifying an architectural VR model, mainly for its color adaptation. In the applicability process, this system proposes towards user oriented smart environment such as the colors of an interior space are dynamically changed according to a characteristic affective response of a user.

Starting from here an investigation line has been created . that has generated publications, subjects, etc,... . in which has shown that, through this current, it has been reflecting the open character of the representation and its capacity of current renovation, in correspondence with the architectural contents, at the same time as the bases of the introduced expression of the contemporary architectural project have settled down.

summary In this paper we present an approach to the differentiation and classification of two-dimensional design drawings. Our model is based on a qualitative encoding scheme and information theoretic measures. The model utilises information-theoretic tools to measure the similarity and complexity of a hierarchy of drawing descriptions. The descriptive and analytic power of the model is demonstrated by evaluating the different measures for a series of simple sketches and studying the time evolution of architectural plans produced by Frank Lloyd Wright.

Accompanying with a course taught in Harvard Design School, students gain knowledge in mathematics and use parametric equation as a design tool. This paper elaborates details of the course, the tool, how they work together, and example applications.

summary The introduction of VRML (Virtual Reality Markup Language) in 1994, and other similar web-enabled dynamic modeling software (such as SGI’s Open Inventor and WebSpace), have created a rush to develop on-line 3D virtual environments, with purposes ranging from art, to entertainment, to shopping, to culture and education. Some developers took their cues from the science fiction literature of Gibson (1984), Stephenson (1992), and others. Many were web-extensions to single-player video games. But most were created as a direct extension to our new-found ability to digitally model 3D spaces and to endow them with interactive control and pseudo-inhabitation. Surprisingly, this technologically-driven stampede paid little attention to the core principles of place-making and presence, derived from architecture and cognitive science, respectively: two principles that could and should inform the essence of the virtual place experience and help steer its development. Why are the principles of place-making and presence important for the development of virtual environments? Why not simply be content with our ability to create realistically-looking 3D worlds that we can visit remotely? What could we possibly learn about making these worlds better, had we understood the essence of place and presence? To answer these questions we cannot look at place-making (both physical and virtual) from a 3D space-making point of view alone, because places are not an end unto themselves. Rather, places must be considered a locus of contextualization and embodiment that ground human activities and give them meaning. In doing so, places acquire a meaning of their own, which facilitates, improves, and enriches many aspects of our lives. They provide us with a means to interpret the activities of others and to direct our own actions. Such meaning is comprised of the social and cultural conceptions and behaviors imprinted on the environment by the presence and activities of its inhabitants, who in turn, ‘read’ by them through their own corporeal embodiment of the same environment. This transactional relationship between the physical aspects of an environment, its social/cultural context, and our own embodiment of it, combine to create what is known as a sense of place: the psychological, physical, social, and cultural framework that helps us interpret the world around us, and directs our own behavior in it. In turn, it is our own (as well as others’) presence in that environment that gives it meaning, and shapes its social/cultural character. By understanding the essence of place-ness in general, and in cyberspace in particular, we can create virtual places that can better support Internet-based activities, and make them equal to, in some cases even better than their physical counterparts. One of the activities that stands to benefit most from understanding the concept of cyber-places is learning—an interpersonal activity that requires the co-presence of others (a teacher and/or fellow learners), who can point out the difference between what matters and what does not, and produce an emotional involvement that helps students learn. Thus, while many administrators and educators rush to develop webbased remote learning sites, to leverage the economic advantages of one-tomany learning modalities, these sites deprive learners of the contextualization and embodiment inherent in brick-and-mortar learning institutions, and which are needed to support the activity of learning. Can these qualities be achieved in virtual learning environments? If so, how? These are some of the questions this talk will try to answer by presenting a virtual place-making methodology and its experimental implementation, intended to create a sense of place through contextualization and embodiment in virtual learning environments.

title Lightscape - an exploration in interactive lighting

summary The aim was to provide a theoretical approach to the lighting project undertaken for the xCube group work. The nds2004 students had decided to build an interactive, computeroptimised structure as their final project, where lights, sensors and textured surfaces were to create an interactive experience for the visitor. For various reasons the interactive aspect was abandoned. The idea to work on a light(-ing) object came up when I discovered a little device called the Barionet™. This device allows you to control an on/off switch remotely, through a web interface or through programming. That was it! The ip_lamp (…its first name): a small object that has its own IP address, and therefore can be accessed via the internet. Turn it on or off… This evolved into the _lightscape where 2 interacting lights send each other data about the other (distance from a wall or number of people for example). The atmosphere of a room becomes dependant of what is going on in another… This work is also an attempt to develop a pluridisciplinary approach to an architectural project by making use of the many tools available to the postgraduate students: programming a simulation in Flash, experimenting with different hardware interfaces or rapidly manufacturing a light box on the 3-axis mill. A cross-over project in a (modest) way.

In architectural teaching and in urban spatial structures design it enables a continual semantic evaluation of the graphic output and its further multimedia processing.

summary Tensegrity, defined as “tensional integrity,” is central to the design of a semi-open exhibition space that was submitted as an entry to the international competition for the design of “Ephemeral Structures for the City of Athens,” in the context of the 2004 Olympic Games. The main feature of the proposed exhibition space is a vaulted dome composed of interconnected detachable and deployable tensegrity units. The most challenging aspect in the design of the tensegrity vault was the generation of alternative spatial configurations for form exploration and study. For this purpose a mathematical code has been developed that links all the parameters that affect the design of tensegrity vaults. The code also allows for the parametric graphical generation of the vault by displaying geometric information in a 3D environment. This paper discusses the geometric basis of the code and its usefulness in the morphological study of the tensegrity vaulted dome for the proposed ephemeral structure. The mathematical code has been shown to significantly facilitate the study of various preliminary configurations of tensegrity vaulted structures.

summary The winning entry by Toronto’s Hariri Pontarini Architects (HPA) for the design of the Bahá’í Temple for South America in Santiago, Chile has not gone unnoticed by the architectural community and media. Sumptuous images of the “Temple of Light” described by Gary Michael Dault as “a soap bubble that has alighted, momentarily, on the ground” reveal a dramatic departure from the firm’s portfolio. HPA is responsible for McKinsey & Co. in Toronto and the Schulich School of Business at York University (with RYWA in joint venture). Their work is characterized by close attention to proportion and composition through the meeting of materials. Using conventional methods of construction, the firm is capable of producing a high level of detail refinement.

title A model proposal for digitisation and recording data on architectural heritage in Poland based on European guidelines and best practices.

summary The aim of the research is an adoption of digital technology in the recording and management of architectural heritage of Poland. The current documentation practice does not fit to the present needs. The existing system of built heritage recording and protection in Poland was developed during the 1960s and the 1970s. It is based on a database of paper fiches. Although the documenting template allows the collection of comprehensive information on historic buildings, the whole system of heritage protection remains petrified. The database verification and upgrade is usually delayed, and moreover, the records do not include some information crucial for successful protection and regeneration of historical buildings. The lack of computer aided documentation system causes, furthermore, inadequate management of the heritage. Central to the research methodology is the belief that a computer aided documentation system for built heritage in Poland should be compatible and harmonised with similar European projects as a response to the needs of the emerging Information Society. To achieve that standards and best practices in Europe were identified, analysed and compared with the current Polish system of heritage protection and management. Activities of Scottish organisations from the cultural heritage sector, being in the forefront of European achievements, were studied in detail. It was observed that Scottish advancements might be a source of valuable lessons and guidelines for similar activities in Poland. The issues crucial to designing a framework model for digitisation and recording data on architectural heritage in Poland were given particular attention. These included aspects related to content, technology, legislation, and project organisation. As a result a number of recommendations were formulated and supported with necessary tables and diagrams. This specification is intended as a starting point for implementation of digital technology in recording and management of architectural heritage of Poland. It is believed that the research outcomes may become useful not only for the architectural heritage documentation and management, but also in the wider cultural heritage sector in Poland. The thesis concludes with a statement that the validity of any guidelines related to the digital technology has a limited lifespan, and therefore the proposed model for digitisation and recording data on architectural heritage in Poland, to be successful, requires constant, diligent review of the technology development.

title Sharing Experiences in the Digital Preservation in Schools of Architecture

summary The aim of this paper is to open a discussion on sharing knowledge and experience in the field of digital preservation between universities which are members of eCAADe organisation. First, paper identifies the importance of keeping digital information alive. Secondly, the key approaches are described, namely: refreshing, migration, emulation. The role of XML is also pointed out. Additionally preservation metadata formats as well as information management (comprised of a set of four inter-linked stages: creation, storage, dissemination and re-use) are discussed. Then, the above-mentioned issues are confronted with the schools of architecture realm. And finally the general, yet fundamental questions are posed: How do we manage the digital data and keep them alive for a long term? What methods do we apply? Do we implement standards? The paper concludes with a suggestion to undertake a survey (for example in the form of a questionnaire) which would serve the eCAADe members.

title The fifth elevation: Effects of digital graphic design and printing technologies on the urban fabric in developing countries

summary The paper reports on a study that identifies the effects of current advertising and printing technologies on urban spaces in developing countries. The complexities of these advertising applications form a complicated hierarchical web that requires an investigation of surface- volume-context relationships to minimize the tension between the graphical message and the urban fabric. Regressive application of technology-based graphic design and advertisement in the form of billboards and signage, form a new layer identified as the fifth elevation. The study endeavors for positive consequences of such elevations and differentiates between chaos and complexity. Consequently, the study categorizes various advertising schemes and recommends short-term guidelines to reduce chaotic amalgamation. Several design factors and new advertising schemes are proposed to sustain cultural and visual coherency of urban spaces. When applied, these recommendations could prove useful for many cities in the Middle East due to planning, cultural, economical, and religious, similarities.

title Overview of Intelligent Architecture

summary The concept of intelligent architecture started as an interest in the latest integrated building systems operating a single building or facility, so that systems can communicate and exchange information. The communication among these systems allows the right responses and decisions to operate buildings in a productive, economical and convenient way. Communication and information sharing prevents decisions from interfering with other systems’ responses or operation. Systems’ decisions and responses form the responsive architecture that is represented by systems outputs. If intelligent buildings need to receive, analyze, and react according to such processes, responsive ones are required only to receive and react to only one input parameter. Technology and communication systems make it possible to combine several parameters by using system integration and computerization. Technology and computerized systems have enhanced and changed the manner of responses and provided a variety of decisions according to different sources of information. Receiving, analyzing, and reacting are the key criteria of intelligent building that this paper will explore. The input (reception) category covers information detection devices such as temperature sensors. The second category will be the category of analysing devices. The third category, decisions and outputs, will cover both output of sensory devices and forms of reaction and response that emanate from these systems. As a result of the third category, this paper will survey the forms of responses to determine whether or not the kinetic response is a viable choice. The paper will discuss if these three criteria are the only criteria creating intelligent building or if there are others. The paper will give an overview on intelligent architecture and explore in the main criteria determining intelligent building. The paper will then discuss when “responsive” and "kinetic" architecture becomes “intelligent”. The paper will also redefine the intelligent architecture in the light of available technology.

summary The paper traces the development of a digital hanging chain modeler in Java inspired by Antonio Gaudi’s physical hanging chain models. More importantly, it demonstrates how fabrication schemas for physical mockups of the digitally simulated hanging chain can be linked to the real time form finding simulation. Fabrication output is an integral part of the iterative process and not a post-design process. The current implementation is still limited and currently requires programming for reconfiguration. The paper proposes the link of form-finding and fabrication finding and lays out several examples and first steps of how to do so.

summary This paper introduces a study of pedestrian behaviour modelling which incorporates ideas about agent-based systems and the traffic models based on the utility-maximization theory. The aim of this study is to examine the applicable scope of one of the basic assumptions in existing spatial behaviour models; the route with shortest distance maximizes the utility of each pedestrian’s travel. Although shortest-path models have been widely used in the field of Traffic management to predict routing behaviour, there can be seen a lot of erratic behaviour in urban areas, shopping migration behaviour for instance, which can not be explained by them. Thus, it is important to identify other possible influential factors on their utility maximization process in order to develop more explicable models of pedestrian movements. In this study, we implemented a simulation model using the shortest-path model as one of evaluation criteria of Genetic Algorithms (GA) to computationally emulate retail movements of shoppers in a big shopping centre and to test the accuracy of the model by comparison between the routes estimated by the model and actual trajectories of shoppers. This simulation system will be used as a platform for further modelling.
