title Supporting Design Learning with Design Puzzles

summary The design process is a puzzle-solving process. Two groups of researches that share many similarities with Puzzle-solving design process are the process of game-playing and playful learning. The main argument is using the “playing” characteristics to amplify and explore the learning process, furthermore the design process. In addition, puzzles imply playful exploration that utilizes the characteristics of “playing a game” as “solving a puzzle”. Puzzle making and puzzle solving provides an incremental exploration mechanism that is more intuitive for design learning. For understanding and realizing puzzles in design learning, this research is divided into two stages of researches—manual design puzzles and interactive design puzzles. By analysing the outcome from manual design puzzles, this research proposes a framework called (interactive) “design puzzles”. The conceptual and implementation framework of this view of design is elaborated in this paper as well as a particular design puzzle called puzzle collage is described as the realization of design puzzles.

summary Geometry regarded as a tool for understanding is perhaps the part of Mathematics which is the most intuitive, concrete and linked to reality. From its roots as a tool to describe and measure shapes, geometry as ‘the space science’ , has grown towards a theory of ideas and methods by means of which it is possible to build and study idealised models, not only from the physical world but also from the real world. In graphic architecture thought, geometry usually appears as an instrumental support for project speculation. Geometric procedures are presented as representational resources for the graphic testing of reflection and for the exposition of ideas in order to build a logical order as regards representation and formal prefiguration. The fast rise of computing in the last decades has made it possible for architects to work massively and in a graphic and intuitive way with mathematical representations of tridimensional geometry, such as the NURBS . These organic surfaces of free shapes defined by vectorial curves have allowed access to a rapid generation of complex shapes with a minumum amount of data and of specific knowledge.

The great development of modelling achieved by the digital media and the limitations in the technical and building areas and in the existence of materials which are coherent with the resultant shapes reveal a considerable distance between the systems of ideation and simulation characteristic of the computing era and the analogous systems of production inherited from the slow industrial development. This distance has been shortened by CAD/CAM systems, which are, however, not very accessible to the architectural field. If we incorporate to the development of these divergent media the limitations which are distinctive of the material resources and procedures of the existent local technology, the aforementioned distance seems even greater.

Assuming the metaphor of living at the threshold of two ages (industrial-computing, analogical-digital, material-virtual) and the challenge of the new conceptual and operational tools in our field, we work in the mixture, with no exclusions or substitutions, proposing (by means of the development of informational complements) some alternatives of work to approach the issue under discussion from the Architecture Workshop.

title Design Knowledge Discovery in Cases - The Machine View Vs. the Human View

summary In the previous study, we had applied the data mining techniques and ontology methodology to develop a keyword-based schema to extract and represent the implicit information within a case library, Case Base for Architecture (CBA). To improve the ability of our keyword-based schema on extracting and representing design knowledge within cases, we proceeded some experiments to understand the design’s mental behaviors in extracting knowledge from cases. Through protocol analysis, we attempted to establish a knowledge discovery model of extracting design knowledge from cases, and to propose methods to apply this model to improve our keyword-based schema. Through collecting adjective keywords to restructure our design dictionary, we attempt to make our system more sensitive to design knowledge, and more sensitive to user’s intensions by extending the ontology of our keyword list.

title Curious Agents in Virtual Exhibitive Environments Simulative Human-Computer Interaction

summary The creation of virtual environments is becoming the alternative for spatial design, while what can be expanded from the real environment is often questioned. This paper proposes the agent interface based on curiosity to create human computer interaction in virtual exhibitive environments. From a social and behavioral point of view, this research explores the use of places as metaphors and simulative human-computer interactions in virtual environments by reactive agents and proactive curious agents based on situation detection. The process is demonstrated by a museum exhibition project. Both the physical and the virtual environment are built, and studied the human behaviors and experiences from their presence at both environments. Agent interfaces are adopted in the virtual environment to enhance people-to-people and people-to-place interactions. The development process, the observation, the interface agent, and discussion based on the findings are presented.

title STUDY ON COMPUTER-AIDED DESIGN SUPPORT OF TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURAL THEORIES

summary The research presented in this thesis describes a computer-aided design support of traditional architectural theories. Traditional architectural theories in western architecture have been considered as a basis for answering the fundamental questions of architecture: proportion, symmetry, colour, harmony and so on. In particular, the aesthetic aspect of these theories has been one of many important architectural aspects, and which is concerned with the field of architecture in determining the beauty of architectural form. The most significant role of the traditional theories in architecture is to maintain unity, to avoid chaos and then to achieve harmony in a design, using some specific design principles. However, current technology-guided constructions tend to neglect often the importance of these theories due to the standardization of building elements, due to mechanically-prepared construction and the reducing completion costs, etc. Thus, this research proposes a design support system as a design assistant that gives an intelligent advice on architectural design, using analytical design- and ordering- principles of traditional theories for the optimization of the architectural design from the aesthetic perspective. To evaluate the aesthetic quality of an architectural design, this system is implemented in the AutoCAD environment, using the AutoLISP. It is applied so as to explain and develop aesthetic qualities of a design. Designs proposed by this system include optimum designs, which are based on the traditional architectural theories, and new ones which can be in future connected to information models. To do this, the definition of information about building elements is accomplished by using the neutral format EXPRESS and EXPRESS-G for such application systems. The results of the application system are presented, such as the easily generating and quickly conceptualising of an object model, the checking of the aesthetic value of the design during the various design phases, the helping to find direction during rational searching for a solution. The user can easily appreciate the usefulness of the proposed system as a set of tools for searching for rational architectural aesthetics and formal solutions at different design-stages. It is to be hoped that a new "traditional" fundamental of architecture, such as the proposed system, incorporating CAAD systems, will find its place among new technological methods in the AEC industry and so help to bridge the gap between the value of traditional architecture and CAAD systems.

title A Revolution of the Design Process

summary Along with the development of computer technologies and CAD/CAM, digital tools are increasingly adapted in architectural design. Developed thus far, functions of digital tools are no long limited to two-dimensional drafting or final presentation; they have become tools that can assist design thinking. Because of the involvement of digital tools, the design process has been greatly affected; or, one may say that digital tools liberated the confines of forms and structuring of architectures. This research aims to explore the procedures in the design process using digital tools. In the conclusion, we found that in an attempt to abridge the gap between design ideas and actual implementation, the designer used the digital reality simulation function very frequently to assist in decision making, and in order to process more complex and freer forms, the designer relied on the 3D design environment to carry out his thinking process and amendments. In addition, the digital design process is mainly conducted through the methods of 1, 3D modeling, 2, Simulation, 3, Generation, and 4, Fabrication. The steps and methods in the digital design process are obviously different from the traditional ones, which focus mainly on mass-production of 2D drawings; therefore, it is certain that the new tools will change the outcome of the designs.

summary In this paper we give an account of our development of a hardware machine-readable cellular automata model for simulating dynamic patterns of use and adaptation in vernacular high-density architecture. In a hypothetical architectural setting that draws its formal expression from illegal façade extensions in Hong Kong and its conceptual framework from the Open Building movement, we examine state evolutions in monotonous matrices of adaptable residential units. The primary objective is to gain a better understanding not only of architectural form but also of dynamic processes in the built environment and hence of the factors that cause adaptive architectures to tend towards different types of overall attractor states. The paper gives a discussion of the project’s theoretical background as well as a detailed description of the hardware model and its modes of application.

Comunidades Online . that considers the construction of a virtual community as intervention in a concrete community, the article considers some initial parameters capable to guide the design of a virtual environment of dialogue and interaction for this on-line community. The objective of this article is to trace the main lines that will direct the design process this environment in a boarding with approaches to the architecture, placing on questions to the space where this dialogue happens. The work develops from the discussions circa the concept of community; of interfaces examples that illustrate different ways to give quality support to the dialogue between users, and one more consistent representation of .I., as well as expression of the identity in the virtual environment; and of an alternative presentation for technological basement, the semantic web.

summary This paper presents an account of our research and development of processes providing seamless transition from design to fabrication. The narrative of our design, development, and prototyping experi¬ments spans seven years, including our current project, the Trusset software/structural system. Trusset is a combined building system and agent-based software design tool. The building system is based on a differential space-truss designed for fabrication entirely with computer numerically controlled (CNC) linear cutting devices, such as laser cut¬ters or three-axis mills. The software component is a set of agent-based design tools for developing surfaces and envelopes formally suitable to be built using the space-truss structure. Developed in parallel, the soft¬ware and building components combine within the Trusset system to provide a seamless pipeline from design to fabrication and assembly. The story of the development of software components and structural system, leading to the Trusset, act as a means of discussing the larger issues framing the research: the potential pitfalls and benefits of design and fabrication integration via the computer.

summary In this paper we examine the quest for seamless computer interaction from the point of view of cultural theory, in so far as this study draws on Freud and his critics. title Virtual Architecture as Representation for Creative Design Process - Through a Collaborative eDesign Studio

summary Using Virtual Architecture (VA) as a general scheme for representations to sustain the reflection activities involved in the design process can help students to initiate creative design ideas. Because of its implicit abstract nature, VA can be used, to represent original ideas or processes, or well-known architectural theories to articulate design ideas. Furthermore, VA as a mean of expression, turn out to be a source of inspiration for students who perceive it as medium with very few limits with which to develop, explore and express their design intuitions. A recent collaborative edesign studio experience is reported to illustrate the benefit observed. Using three examples out of ten student projects, we show how designs and design process have been characterized by those virtual representations. In fall semester 2004, the edesign studio took place between the Schools of Architecture of Toulouse and Université Laval in Québec. VA was both an academic and a studio topic at Laval while the other school students had a traditional design task to tackle, namely the rehabilitation of Chapou University Residences for students in Toulouse. Students from both schools composed each edesign team. In addition, three common architectural themes were web-documented and introduced to both classes: room, as defined by Louis Kahn: “a space which knows what it wants to be is a room”; color, as an architectural medium in dialectic with structure; and body-space relationships, as articulated by Gilles Deleuze and its projection to cyberspace. From the edesign studio results, we are arguing that virtual architecture should be looked at not only as new domain to be investigated by architects and taught in academic studios but also as a new medium of design to develop and explore design intuitions through virtual representations.

summary This paper explains the development of a digital fabrication graduate seminar that has evolved over four semesters. The class attempts to teach at various levels between ‘how to’ considerations of learning hardware and software, while exploring a deeper understanding of the technological implications on design and digital fabrication. At the heart of the course is the belief that the limitations of hardware, software, and materials can be viewed as opportunities during the making of any artifact. A number of teaching models have been employed over the four semesters that include short, abstract, directed mini-projects, which teach one skill to the opposite extreme that develops longer, open-ended research / design projects focused on a technology or technique. The products of the class are used to compare the benefits and deficiencies of various pedagogies. The work is also used to further define the desires of the course related to strategies for materials and making.

title A Nobel Prize for CAAD

summary Fundamental questions about the status of CAAD research arise regularly on different levels and under different circumstances. Apparently there is no common understanding about this, causing confusion, which in itself is already bad for the status of CAAD research. In this article I will discuss the CAAD research approach as I find it at most architecture and engineering groups, by comparing it to research in the traditional science domain. Some differences can be explained from the nature of design, but others' have more historical reasons. To conclude I propose a long-term strategy for scientific CAAD research, namely: (i) Build your own community, (ii) Establish prestigious journals and prizes and (iii) Improve quality by natural selection. Eventually this will bring us the recognition for CAAD research that it deserves.

title Building a Synthetic Cognizer

summary Understanding ‘space’ as a structured and dynamic system can provide us with insight into the central concept in the architectural discourse that so far has proven to withstand theoretical framing (McLuhan 1964). The basis for this theoretical assumption is that space is not a void left by solid matter but instead an emergent quality of action and interaction between individuals and groups with a physical environment (Hillier 1996). In this way it can be described as a parallel distributed system, a self-organising entity. Extrapolating from Luhmann’s theory of social systems (Luhmann 1984), a spatial system is autonomous from its progenitors, people, but remains intangible to a human observer due to its abstract nature and therefore has to be analysed by computed entities, synthetic cognisers, with the capacity to perceive. This poster shows an attempt to use another complex system, a distributed connected algorithm based on Kohonen’s self-organising feature maps – SOM (Kohonen 1997), as a “perceptual aid” for creating geometric mappings of these spatial systems that will shed light on our understanding of space by not representing space through our usual mechanics but by constructing artificial spatial cognisers with abilities to make spatial representations of their own. This allows us to be shown novel representations that can help us to see new differences and similarities in spatial configurations.

summary In-Between Architecture Computation describes the evolution of the Computational Design approach at the AedasR&D Computational Design and Research group founded in 2004 at Aedas architects in London. The approach has transformed itself from an academic inspired thinking about computing media to a more flexible model of design heuristics and search algorithms that finally start to produce new hybrid design workflows in the industry while also swimming against the industry trend of super-integration software. Only if computing is not exclusively defined through architectural design intent or purely computing logic, does computational design explore new design thinking.

summary The urban virtual models are complex environments where interactive modelization and visualization systems have developed high advances, making possible they applications in many different purposes, by expert and non-expert users. Is interesting, in hypermedial reading, to recognise and to evaluate the advantages and obstacles to examine a 2D-3D-4D-5D model. In that direction is presented an exploratory study of preexperimental design, in which is investigated the impacts and influences in non-expert users, that the presence and use of interactive strategies of navigation, selection and manipulation, produces in the results and affects the attitudes with regard to the possibilities of understanding and integration of information and in the confusion and cognitive overflow. The objective is to contribute in the definition and systematization of methodologys and design patterns about interfaces and interactions in three-dimensional hypermedia, from theoretical, operating and pedagogical approach.

summary It is widely accepted that the spatial pattern of settlements is a crucial factor affecting quality of life and environmental sustainability, but few recent studies have attempted to examine the phenomenon of sprawl by modelling the process rather than adopting a descriptive approach. The issue was partly addressed by models of land use and transportation which were mainly developed in the UK and US in the 1970s and 1980s, but the major advances were made in the area of modelling transportation, while very little was achieved in the area of spatial and temporal land use. Models of land use and transportation are well-established tools, based on explicit, exogenouslyformulated rules within a theoretical framework. The new approaches of artificial intelligence, and in particular, systems involving parallel processing, (Neural Networks, Cellular Automata and Multi-Agent Systems) defined by the expression “Neurocomputing”, allow problems to be approached in the reverse, bottom-up, direction by discovering rules, relationships and scenarios from a database. In this article we examine the hypothesis that territorial micro-transformations occur according to a local logic, i.e. according to use, accessibility, the presence of services and conditions of centrality, periphericity or isolation of each territorial “cell” relative to its surroundings. The prediction capabilities of different architectures of supervised Neural networks are implemented to the south Metropolitan area of Milan at two different temporal thresholds and discussed. Starting from data on land use in 1980 and 1994 and by subdividing the area into square cells on an orthogonal grid, the model produces a spatial and functional map of urbanisation in 2008. An implementation of the SOM (Self Organizing Map) processing to the Data Base allows the typologies of transformation to be identified, i.e. the classes of area which are transformed in the same way and which give rise to territorial morphologies; this is an interesting by-product of the approach.

summary The Communication Playground01-Project represents an experimental game structure, where new communication strategies in the Internet can be tested in a game situation. The realisation basis is provided by the first-person shooter game `Quake III`. The idea is to create personal, demanding virtual realities in which individuals can meet and communicate via the Internet. The implementation of Avatars enables the individual to receive visual feedback from the chat partner in real time. In order to create an appropriate environment to experiment, a game was developed to promote and also provoke these requirements purposefully.
