summary This paper will propose a new design method “Plug-in”. 3DCG is a powerful medium for presentation and design in environmental design. However, in the initial stage of a design, we are not able to use it easily since there is no reference data required for 3D modeling such as drawings in that stage. This method will solve the problem and help a designer to get inspiration by use of 3DCG from the very early stage.

summary In this thesis I would like to explore the bubble structure, seek a possibility to use computer programming to reinterpret soap bubble structure. Architecture today is not only built by concrete, steel and glasses anymore. Our power of the new tools will help us to discover the variety of prototypes. Beside a data-driven structure can change shape and define itself by the users. Wherefore structures will be able to adapt themselves physically to changing circumstances, instead of collecting sudden circumstances to enhance the architecture itself.

summary Cyberspace, an information space created through ubiquitously networked computers, has been transformed from fiction to fact in the past decade thanks to the advent of the World Wide Web. Although it can only be experienced through the mediation of computers, it is quickly becoming an alternative stage for everyday economic, cultural, and other human activities. As such, there is a potential and a need to design it according to architectural principles, rather than the prevailing document (page) metaphor. This need is most evident in learning environments, which rely on social and contextual attributes as much as they rely on content. This paper describes the underlying theory and our efforts to develop such virtual learning environments, and the software that allows users to access and inhabit them.

summary Landslides are a major natural hazard in many areas of the world, and globally they cause hundreds of billions of dollars of damage, and hundreds of thousands of deaths and injuries each year. Landslides are the second most common natural hazard in Turkey, and the Black Sea region of that country is particularly affected. Therefore, landslide susceptibility mapping is one of the important issues for urban and rural planning in Turkey. The reliability of these maps depends mostly on the amount and quality of available data used, as well as the selection of a robust methodology. Although statistical methods generally have been implemented and used for evaluating landslide susceptibility and risk in medium scale studies, they are distribution-based and cannot handle multi-source data that are commonly collected from nature. These drawbacks are responsible for the on-going investigations into slope instability. To overcome these weaknesses, the desired technique must be able to handle multi-type data and its superiority should increase as the dimensionality and/or non-linearity of the problem increases – which is when traditional regression often fails to produce accurate approximations. Although neural networks have some problems with the creation of architectures, processing time, and the negative “black box” syndrome, they still have an advantage over traditional methods in that they can deal with the problem comprehensively and are insensitive to uncertain data and measurement errors. Therefore, it is expected that the application of neural networks will bring new perspectives to the assessment of landslide susceptibility in Turkey. In this paper, the application of neural networks for landslide susceptibility mapping will be examined and their performance as a component of spatial decision support systems will be discussed.

summary Digitally supported space-planning techniques have been researched and developed for decades. By processing space adjacency data with existing space-planning techniques, an objective space relationship diagram or schematic layout can be produced. These results represent the functional aspect of each project, which can be used as a reference for further design development. With these results, designers can enhance plan layouts with the preferences established by their client or themselves, as well as design styles. In this research, the author proposes a new method of applying personal preference to modify the objective layout, which imitates human interacting behavior as space organizing categories, Space Character.

summary With the introduction of the computer into different forms of digital applications in the design process, Mitchell strongly recommended a wider application of the new technology in the design process -- implying the mutual influence between physical architecture and the sketches, and between physical and digital models. Most important is the possibility of using computer aided design (CAD) to develop ideas in early design stage. During the developing idea stage, the traditional design process from sketching drawings to forming ideas has been transformed to a process where the idea directly proceeds to computer modeling. The aim of this approach is to tackle the above issues created by the introduction of computer technology, trying to produce the same possibilities during the computer modeling process as that in the cognitive behavior of sketching. Also, the designer usually realizes the abstract concepts with the aid of the 2D sketches and the 3D physical models; but between the traditional sketches and the models, a large degree of disagreement always exists. Therefore, this work aims to develop a new formula for employing digital media, which will enable the designer to envisage 2D sketches and computer models simultaneously. In this scenario, the designer can remain aware of cognitive behavior in sketching while constructing computer models.

summary Following a period of little change, new didactic approaches coupled to social and technological developments have recently triggered several fundamental modifications in Dutch secondary education. These modifications have extensive consequences for the accommodation of secondary education. The majority of existing buildings is quite conventional in spatial terms and is characterized by limited flexibility and transformability. The paper is a description of a modular yet coherent information system that supports decision taking concerning the transformation of existing buildings. The system consists of spatial and topological representation of a building and its brief, as well as a matching system that connects the two.The purpose of the system is to support the management of the building transformation by providing appropriate input to design and decision activities, as well as by accommodating their output. This is achieved by providing a responsive context for the analysis and evaluation of design decisions from the major viewpoints and with respect to primary aspects. Continuity is a major consideration in this context: appropriate information and feedback should be available throughout the design and construction process but also after completion (in anticipation of further transformations, as well as for monitoring building performance).

summary Location modeling, which generally has influence on location-aware applications, is a critical and interesting aspect. In the ubiquitous computing, location modeling has been discussed as one of fundamental research subject, because a location is a very essential element of contexts and useful information for other applications related with ubiquitous computing. Especially, location modeling in architectural space should be defined through the comprehension of the physical environment, because the users' (or objects) location does not only mean numerical coordinates, but also refers to the situation related to users' (or objects) physical contexts. In other hands, location model for architectural space should be based on the simplification of complicated physical environment, the consideration of corresponding various changes, and also the definition for the relationship of spatial information. Traditionally, those issues have been actively studied in the fields of CAAD (Computer Aided Architectural Design) research and could used effectively for ubiquitous computing system. This paper proposes the location model and its utilization method which can be applied on making the ubiquitous computing system in the architectural space based on CAAD theories. At the end of the paper, we present a CAAD system, called “Vitruius”, in order to define architectural spaces appropriately and manage them easily for the ubiquitous computing environment.

summary In this paper we report on a recently started PhD project in which we investigate the extension of the concept of “Building Information Model” (BIM) to the domain of landscape design. The potential benefits of BIM in the field of architecture have been reported many times (e.g., Ibrahim et al., 2004; Eastman et al., 2008; Abdelmohsen et al., 2011). However, in landscape design an information model in the way of BIM seems to be missing. Benefits of a Landscape Information Model would be (a) formalisation of knowledge in landscape design; (b) information model to support multiple participants in landscape design; (c) improved information exchange between landscape design, architecture, and urban design. In this paper we set out the basic outline of the research.
