summary In this paper we report on a recently started PhD project in which we investigate the extension of the concept of “Building Information Model” (BIM) to the domain of landscape design. The potential benefits of BIM in the field of architecture have been reported many times (e.g., Ibrahim et al., 2004; Eastman et al., 2008; Abdelmohsen et al., 2011). However, in landscape design an information model in the way of BIM seems to be missing. Benefits of a Landscape Information Model would be (a) formalisation of knowledge in landscape design; (b) information model to support multiple participants in landscape design; (c) improved information exchange between landscape design, architecture, and urban design. In this paper we set out the basic outline of the research.

summary Paper presents creative use of cellular automata (CA) in architecture, namely for dynamic shading of building facade. The abbreviation “CA” refers both to singular form “cellular automaton” and plural- “automata”. One of the most interesting “visual” quality of CA is abilty to create organic patterns which sometimes are very pleasing to human eye. These patterns seem to “live their own life” and “taming” them to perform purposeful actions is quiet challenging due to their computational irreducibility as shown in an example of possible practical application, but as a result, provides visual effects of unmatched intriguing complexity hard to achieve by means of artistic will, whim or chance. Although amazing qualities of CA astonish for many years, their practical (physical) applications are still very sparse if existing at all, besides “pretty pictures”. Four classes of CA “behavior” with conjunction to the problem of “pattern average grayness” was presented. Two classes of CA were analyzed: 2- color, 1- dimension, range- 1 (2C-1D-R1) and 2-color, 1- dimension, range- 2 (2C-1D-R2) for potential practical use. Problem of monotonic gradual change of average grayness as a function of sequence of initial conditions was discussed. Scheme of mechanical system realizing the idea of shading controlled by CA was proposed.

summary To ensure a good information exchange between different disciplines during the conceptual phase of design a functional design process structuring technique can be used; Integral Design. The design phases and abstraction levels form the dimensions of Integral Design method/contents matrix. Integral Design method is developed based on the combination of a prescriptive approach, Methodical Design, and a descriptive approach, Reflective practice. This design methodology uses morphology to provide an overview of the consider functions/aspects and their solution alternatives. This morphological approach is combined with the Kesselring method a visualization technique, where the different design variants can be compared with each other. It forms an excellent method for Multi Criteria Decision Making in the conceptual phase of design. This paper investigates the application of Integral Design and Multi Criteria Decision Making for design of Flex(ible En)ergy infrastructure for the built environment.

summary Design involves multi-disciplinary design teams to support this highly complex process. A reflective design approach is developed: Integral Desig. This design process approach results in transparency of the design steps and the design decisions. We regard the activities which make these changes obvious to an external observer as the core elements of designing (design as process). The results of these activities are combined with the C-K theory by Hatchuel and Weil, which defines design as a process generating co-expansion of two spaces, space of concepts C and space of knowledge K. Within the design process, the prescriptive methodology of Integral Design is used as a framework for reflection on the design process itself by the use Morphological Overviews (MO). Morphology provides a structure to give an overview and to structure the communication and reflection between design team members.

summary This work is developed in the framework of urban design where we try to understand, to characterize then to qualify the environmental quality of urban open spaces along pedestrian walkways. So, we propose an analysis and a classification method applied to pedestrian walkways, taking into account their environmental characteristics. Analysis method is based on Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) in which we exploit the detailed version of the signal representing the evolution of a physical factor of environment along the walkway. This method leads to a segmentation of the signal. Then, a classification technique called Agglomerative Hierarchical Clustering (AHC) is performed to identify classes of walkways in terms of environmental features.

summary The modeling and simulation of pedestrian behavior has been dominantly relied on rational choice models in which pedestrians are assumed to be capable of processing a large number of choice alternatives and trade off attribute utilities. In reality, however, pedestrian behaivor shows the evidence of bounded rationality. They simplify the decision problem by considering a limited number of factors as well alternatives, using heuristics to arrive at satisfactory as opposed to optimal choices. Incorporating principles of bounded rationality in pedestrian modeling will benefit the understanding of individual decision processes and planning practice. This paper proposes an approach that models the cognitive processes such as filtering factors, constructing preference structures, deriving heterogeneous decision heuristics, and selecting decision strategies. The approach is also exemplified through estimating the model on pedestrian store patronage behavior data, collected in a shopping center in Shanghai, China. The results show the estimated probabilities of usage of decision strategies and the sequences of factor search. Compared with the conventional multinomial logit models, the results indicate the statistical advantages of the new approach.

summary Designers; architects and artists in general always proceed with one crucial goal in their mind when they design: to be able to materialize the scheme in their mind. There are some tools that can help designers to test their design to see if it will be successfully constructed or functioned as close as possible as the way they imagined or expected; visual simulation models in digital environments of the designs are such important tools for architectural design process, but these models does not provide enough data to determine the design’s applicability. Therefore, the need of a tool that would work with the designer in order to determine the possibility of whether the design could be built or not as the way designer imagined, is vital.

summary This paper describes an introductory computational design course for graduate students of design in which Islamic star patterns are utilized in teaching computational logic and design rules. Formal descriptions of eight pointed Islamic star pattern that depict a variety of geometrical structures and constraints of the Euclidean shapes are extracted with the shape grammar method. Then star pattern generator that runs on a specific CAD system is developed by encoding these formal descriptions in systems scripting language. The examples of new designs are generated, and then fabricated using various CAM technologies.

title Idea development can occur using imagery only during early conceptual designing

summary This paper shows that expert architects can effectively develop ideas without sketching during early conceptual designing. We analysed design protocols of six expert architects working on two different design problems under two different conditions, one in which they were blindfolded and one in which they were sketching. Architects developed design ideas efficiently when they were blindfolded, as opposed to the common view that they would better develop ideas with sketching.

title Endoscopy Without Endoscopes: Alternatives for Gaining Shared-In-Sights at an Eye-Level

summary This contribution is an attempt to explain the evolution of endoscopy in design and planning. While in early uses of endoscopy aspects of handling the instrument used to be at the centre of attention, they have come to be replaced by the notion of gaining deliberate insights into architectural or urban planning models. Does that mean endoscopy without an endoscope? In the following it will be shown that insights can be gained even without the use of an endoscopic device, provided the process of observation is consciously analysed. The focus lies on the perspective of the end-user. This observation is illustrated by the case study on Dehnepark in Vienna and sustained by the research activities accompanying the design process.
