summary This paper examines the objectives and describes the methodology of an ongoing research project concerned with the built heritage of Montreal, Canada; more precisely, with the openings (doors, windows, bow-windows, dormers, etc.) in residential buildings. Within the framework of this project, we aim to implement digital environments to document and enhance the architectural vocabulary of openings. We adopt 3D programming to describe the way in which the artefacts are assembled from different components. The aim of this process is to enable the introduction of variations into the principles governing the composition of the artefacts, so as to generate new configurations.

title Retrieving Lost Space With Tangible Augmented Reality

summary Tangible Augmented Reality can be an innovative way for designers to understand the spatial conception. Due to the high integration of tactile and vision, this realm allows users to gain a better understanding how to retrieve ‘lost space’ in an urban context. By using a variety of visualisation methods, such as wireframe and transparencies, hidden or other ways unperceivable (lost) space is made available. With the aid of Tangible Augmented Reality designers are subsequently able to evaluate the design context and its solution more holistically. This paper argues that the retrieval of lost space enhances the design communication.

title Preliminary tectonic phenomena of diversified architectural spatial forms in digital age

summary The research on tectonics in the architectural field began from the middle of nineteenth century and in recent twenty years digital technology gradually developed and permeated through the field of architecture. Liu and Lim (2006, 2009) integrated classic and digital tectonic factors a present framework of new tectonics. However, the previous studies related to the tectonics in this digital age were only on architectural cases that use a great deal of digital media. The research wants to know what and how the tectonic factors affect the different spatial forms of modern architecture and focused on a case study of the diversified spatial forms, orthogonal, folding and curving. The results show the classic tectonic thinking is imperative until now. It is critical to prove the significance of adding the new digital tectonic factors in digital age.

summary Our digital carving experiments reveal ways to invite discovery into the design process. Working with sketched lines, handcrafted finishing, geometric overlay, and tool path coding can lead a designer to unexpected results. Concentrating on forming processes moving through material over time encourages open-ended play. Iteratively examining how computer operations generate carved results provides a craftsman’s understanding of tools and materials.

title Generation of architectural parametric components: Cultural heritage 3D modelling

summary This paper deals with 3D modeling of complex architectural elements for virtual 3D scene reconstruction based on images or point clouds. It presents a new method at the opposite of classical photogrammetry and lasergrammetry techniques: parametric components are created and then adapted to the measured data. We have conceived and developed a parametric shape generator tool for virtual 3D reconstruction of cultural heritage monuments. We present the geometrical study on the cupola shapes with all their diversity. It is illustrated with the Suleymaniyé Mosque in Turkey. The results are promising. The modeling time is greatly reduced.

The geometry contributes its capacity to interpret the structuring of the world and of the reason; while the architecture contributes with its capacity to transform the semantic and physical aspects of our habitat. The different advances in the geometric representation have defined the characteristics of the architectural spaces that go: since the rigorousness modulating of the Classicism and the birth of the Euclidean geometry, to the contemporary informalism; the incorporation of the digital mathematical calculation, and its strong review of the traditional cartesian space.

title Research on Hybrid Tectonic Methodologies for Responsive Architecture

summary This research intends to provide a comprehensive understanding and tectonic patterns of responsive architecture. By qualitatively analyzing a series of critical responsive buildings from Ito’s early Wind Tower through Diller and Scofidio’s Blur Building to Cloud 9’s recent Habitat Hotel, tectonic themes of “lightness”, “morphing”, ”improvisation”, and “networking” are set to the elucidate methodological relationships between their tectonic expressions and design concepts. Based on these designated themes, manipulation of materiality, techniques of construction, and mechanism of responsiveness in the studied cases are comparatively discussed and demonstrated with visualization of their tectonic design patterns. The objective of this research is to stress on the importance of tectonic consistency and offer evidences in combining physical components with digital configurations in order to achieve poetic expressions of structure, function, as well as aesthetics so that genuine spatial quality for digital era can be truly revealed.

summary Despite the global and universal characteristics of nowadays’ society, the new information and communication technologies, seem, in paradox, to direct Architecture to growing individualism, shown in the nervous search for each one’s form. This path seems to end up in cities filled up with iconic buildings with no respect neither for the consolidated built environment, nor for the human being. Known as an innovation tools, with huge power and able to make all the visionary and utopian projects become real seem to further Architecture away from its humanist basis. The architect, selfish and egocentric, dives deep into his own craziness, in an era where the new technologies allow everything. If boundaries are not established, a new architectural paradigm is anticipated, where all the individualisms live but that the individual cannot inhabit, and where the innovation seems to enter in conflict with built heritage.

summary In Norway there has been an increased focus on participatory planning the latter years. The public is now supposed to be included in the planning process. The documents which the public have access to usually consists of the project`s technical drawings. In some cases, the documents include perspective drawing or computer rendering supplied by the stakeholder. Most affected parties are non professional in terms of planning, and have little or no experience dealing with the plans. Therefore, the information they rely on most cases is the perspective images, which easily can be manipulated. A system that enables all parties engaged in the planning process to visualize planning scenarios in a much realistic way is therefore needed. Virtual Reality is a tool that enables the viewer to move freely in a three dimensional digital environment. In this virtual world, different levels of interactivity can be added. The Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB) has recently installed a new immersive Virtual Reality system based on the idea of ConCave theatre. This research study is making use of the new ConCave theatre in order to test whether VR can be used as an enhancement of the communication process between professionals and amateurs and between professionals. By presenting digital models of different level of detail to two subject groups consisting of students with planning background and two groups without such experience we first investigated perception in an immersive VR-environment.

title Experiments with stochastic processes: Facade subdivision based on wind motion

summary Constraint based tools for architectural design exploration need to satisfy aesthetic and functional criteria as well as combine discrete and continuous modes of exploration. In this paper, we examine the possibilities for stochastic processes in design space exploration. Specifically, we address the application of a stochastic wind motion model to the subdivision of an external building envelope into smaller discrete components. Instead of deterministic subdivision constraints, we introduce explicit uncertainty into the system of subdivision. To address these aims, we develop a model of stochastic wind motion; create a subdivision scheme that is governed by the wind model and explore a design space of a façade subdivision problem. A discrete version of the façade, composed of light strips and panels, based on the bamboo elements deformed by continuous wind motion, is developed. The results of the experiments are presented in the paper.

It highlights how the method, in the development of the project, helps to bring up new issues about the way how the products and services relate to their ‘activity inducer’ and their ‘environment of use’.

summary This article proposes a classification, under the Visualization Information point of view, of infographics broadcasted in the brazilian news television. To achieve this purpose these so called motion graphics were analised under the basis formed by three main authors: Tufte (1997), Bertin (1977) and Spence (2007), whose theories are in this article compared to the digital means of the motion graphics. With these theoretical foundation and the analisys of two hundred motion graphics broadcasted in the brazilian news television, we achieved a classification which covers every type of these motion graphics, hoping it becomes a basis for the study of these projects.

summary Application of 3D models in urban planning practice is still limited to visualization of existing or newly designed situations. Municipalities are looking for possibilities to communicate the transition process of the urban development area with the citizens. A prototype system was developed to investigate what the technical requirements are of such a tool and what the organizational consequences will be. As an example, screenshots are shown of a district in Eindhoven at different moments in time. Finally, recommendations are given on what is needed to turn the prototype into a professional tool.

summary This paper aims at specifying how ‘digital’ acts in contemporary architectural design. On that purpose, and in an a priori manner, we will formulate hypotheses of concepts able to translate the specificities of digital design. In this research paper, we beg the question that the ‘digital culture’ may influence the architects in two manners: in design operation and in references. The conceptual tools will be given by architecturology, and our hypotheses will be illustrated with examples of two French firms (Ateliers Jean Nouvel, Jakob+MacFarlane).

summary This work proposes the use of partial order lattices along with represent-ational schemes to account for patterns of ambiguity and emergence in the description of designs. The complexity of such designs is viewed as an aggregation of spatial layers that can all be decomposed by the subgroup relations of the symmetry of the configuration. At the end, this methodology points to a combinatorial approach that generates visual prototypes for future use in design synthesis. Here, Meier’s work is just a case study that validates the group theoretical approach.

summary The paper presents a framework for parametric and generative design based on shape grammars, implemented inside a 3d animation tool. A simple description is given on how animation works, along with parity features between shape grammars and animation tools. Work covered in previous papers by the writer, namely how the designer constructs individual tools from simple animation mechanisms is here expanded in a framework of algebras that not only function in geometric dimensions but also in time.

summary We examine an open source 3d suite of tools called blender, as a tool for architectural design. The unique features of blender are examined in terms of ease of use and integrated nature since blender incorporates a simulation engine and a game engine that can be used creatively in the design process. The unique data structure of Blender is examined with the features and work flow that this structure brings in the design process. Also a simple comparison is made between Blender and 3ds max in terms of features and workflow as visualization tools together with an assessment of a two year seminar that took place in the Department of Architecture, in Volos Greece.
