title Physics-based generative design

summary We present a physics-based generative design approach to interactive form-finding. While form as a product of dynamic simulation has been explored previously, individual projects have been developed as singleton solutions. By identifying categories of computational characteristics, we present a novel unified model that generalizes existing simulations through a constraint-based approach. The potential of interactive form finding simulation is explored through exemplary studies: a conceptual approach to a fixed form that acts as a visualization of interacting forces, and a constraint-based model of the fabrication logic for a panelization system are examined. Implications of constraint-based simulation on future directions are discussed.

title Social Experiments in Design Technology

summary The delivery of a successful project demands high levels of collaboration across an expanded design team, which now includes consultants, fabricators and contractors as well as architects and engineers. The pace of development in design technology has been very rapid during the last few years and there are now many software products which offer high levels of sophistication. Most provide associative and parametric modelling strategies, which can be further enhanced and extended by the use of scripting languages. Designers are becoming tool-builders while fabricators are becoming digital craftsmen. With the advent of fast efficient drawing extraction the industry is at last making determined steps towards a model-driven process. However there is no integrated platform which supports the free exchange of ideas, combined with the evaluation of performance, experimentation with production techniques and the evolution of project-specific workflows. In education the design schools have been quick to recognise the potential of the new design technology. This has led to a rapid expansion in course curricula that now offer many new specialisations, most of which also need to be under-pinned by a good grounding in descriptive geometry, mathematics and physics. The architect as a generalist, who coordinates the work of specialists, is being challenged by an increasing breadth of technical studies that require more than just a superficial depth of understanding. In practice the gulf is widening even more rapidly. New graduates, who often have spectacular expertise in modelling and fluency in scripting languages, do not yet have the design and construction experience necessary to direct their efforts to best effect. On the other hand people running project teams do not have the technical background to understand the potential of the skills and resources that are available. Today there is no longer the continuity that used to derive from apprenticeship. As we experiment we find that tools based on new ideas and techniques can radically change workflow – but fear of the unknown can provoke resistance. So the problems we face in harnessing the new technology are as much social and cultural as they are technical. The presentation will focus on developing attitudes towards tool-building with the aim of integrating design, analysis and production. This is part of a continual and quite gradual process, which requires the ability to play interpretive roles that help to bring about cultural change. Examples will be shown from the work of the Specialist Modelling Group at Foster+Partners who now have tenyears experience in deploying design technology in an environment where research is intensely project driven.

summary Analytical work has demonstrated the potential of shape grammars for capturing rules embedded in existing design styles, and generating designs within such styles that match given design contexts. However, the creation of grammars for new design styles, from exploratory rules to design synthesis, remains elusive. The combined use of patterns and discursive grammars is here proposed as a way of encoding the semantics behind recurrent urban design operations and enable the development of a tool to support the creation of new grammars. The idea is that by exploring the combination of generative patterns designers may arrive at new grammars.

title Algorithmic Form Generation of a Radiolarian Pavilion

summary This paper describes the design stage of an on-going research project for the construction of a pavilion that mimics the bone structures of Radiolarians. In the process, several constructive and generative algorithms are developed, together with geometric and trigonometric functions, all implemented in RhinoScript and a math plug-in for the NURBS modeler Rhinoceros. There has been considerable emphasis on the generation of the Radiolarian cell that is tessellated along a stereographic surface with a honeycomb-based algorithm. It combines design strategies from biomimetics, mathematical functions, generative scripting, process automation and versioning, all integrated into an algorithmic methodology for creating a non-standard structure, capable of being manufactured with CNC technology, and doing so, setting a precedent in the academic and professional environment in which it will be located.

summary Shape grammars have been used in architecture for analysis and synthesis - in the first case, mainly for the characterization of styles and in the later for the generation of novel compositions. The present research proposes the use of shape grammars for establishing guidelines for the requalification of historical areas that have lost their original characteristics due to improper renovations. In order to develop and test the proposed method, a study was carried out in a small Brazilian town called Monte Alegre do Sul. The town was chosen because its original urban morphology, developed in the XIXth century, is still relatively well preserved, although part of the original façades have been transformed. The objective of the research is to develop a shape grammar to set guidelines for the requalification of the already renovated façades in Monte Alegre do Sul.

A simple description is given on how animation works, along with parity features between shape grammars and animation tools. Work covered in previous papers by the writer, namely how the designer constructs individual tools from simple animation mechanisms is here expanded in a framework of algebras that not only function in geometric dimensions but also in time.

This is informative because improvisation in the design process can aid in developing numerous design alternatives. An understanding of improvisation in jazz music is particularly relevant for the architectural design process.

summary This paper explores the applicability of algorithmic design in a real-world architectural context; through the creation of a generative system for modular housing arrangements (MHAS). It is a user interface in Autodesk Maya based on stochastic search to produce various alternatives for the modular housing arrangements. Through the UI, the designer can enter parameters and rules, and then the MHAS will produce 3D alternatives according to the specified frame conditions and renders a selected view. This generative system is expected to facilitate the design process, generate unexpected solutions for well specified rules, and save time consumption in the early design process.

summary The purpose of this research is to develop a process capable of optimizing the capture of light in a circumscribed space, using a responsive system of skylights. Research is focused on the design of irregular dome-like pavilion spaces but the envisioned process might be applied to other functional, formal, and spatial typologies. A process based on scripting generates a matrix of components based on geographic situation, and sun orientation. The integration of conception and fabrication with digital tools (CAD-CAM) enabled the construction of this non standard, parametric geometry, diminishing the costs of production, allowing personalization and assuring global sustainability.

summary This study is about building a conceptual architecture called Meta-form that can perform the acts of parametric design to generate various house forms. The study limits its scope to four genotypes of residential houses in the world. Typological Analysis is employed as a technique of distinguishing the key variables shared by the built forms. The result, with respect to each genotype, there are specific meta-form systems account for the generation of cases of phenotype by assigning different values to each corresponding parameter. With its generative power the meta-form system is evidently a useful tool to assist type-based form productions. As such, the parametric values also acquired the descriptive power of specifying built form characters.

title Virtual Organism: Generative Tool Based on Multi-Agent System

summary A multi-agent system (MAS) is efficient as it can emulate a variety of organisms in natural science due to the interactions between agents, which make artificial systems responsive and adaptive. In “Bamboo Workshop” involved flexible structures, MAS was employed to create virtual organism in computational environment towards an innovative process in installation design. A generative tool with friendly user interface was developed for both observation and intervention besides debugging. At the same time investigations were carried on the complex behaviours of the system through graphic statistics. Integrated with the generative tool, a construction system made up of bamboo materials was set up to build a series of mobile and flexible installations. This experiment suggests that the virtual organism has the potential for being a part of the design intelligence, beyond a mere digital tool.

summary We propose a three-step participatory design cycle for the early urban design phase that can be integrated into the digital design chain. Step one involves a visualization method that is implemented as an interactive card-based interview technique for the collaborative requirement specification of urban designs. In step two these specifications are a) translated into simplified GIS data and then b) implemented into a grammar-based system together with the corresponding design regulations. The final outcome is a generative and iterative urban model, which includes buildings, building blocks, transportation networks and open spaces that visually communicates spatial impacts of urban design proposals.

summary This paper reports on the development of a multi-objective evolutionary developmental design environment, called EDDE. The goal of the system is to make it easier for designers to use evolutionary techniques to explore design possibilities. The system consists of a generic evolutionary core into which a set of design specific scripts need to be plugged in. The system uses a web based client-server architecture that can either be run on a single computer or on multiple computers in parallel. Initial experiments have shown the system to be effective in evolving designs.

summary Genetic algorithms categorized as global search heuristics are search technique of seeking approximate or exact solutions for optimizing problems. Our generative tool named notchSpace starts from a population of randomly generated individuals which rationally subdivide architectural spaces with a low “fitness”. During generations’ evolution, the population is recombined, modified and mutated at a low rate to form new modes of building spatial subdivision; a new population is used in the next iteration. NotchSpace works up a research platform to evolve architectural spaces, and it explores the thinking of translation from computer algorithms to the field of architecture.

title An urban grammar for Portuguese colonial new towns in the 18th century

summary This study describes the morphological urban order underlying Portuguese treatises and Portuguese urban cartographic representation produced from 16th century to 18th century. The historical documentation suggests that Pythagorean-Euclidian geometry appears to be a crucial ingredient for the understanding of Portuguese urban design-thinking and urban design-making. To unveil the genesis of the morphological urban order present in the Portuguese colonial plans of the eighteenth century, a descriptive method, Shape Grammar has been adopted. Shape Grammar, as method, supports the analysis of the form-making logic and has proved to be powerful in shape analysis, description, interpretation, classification, evaluation and generation of a design language.

title Architectural shape generating through environmental forces

summary In this paper we present a new parametric approach based on environmental constraints, in order to generate digital models of architectural shape, directly within a three dimensional geo-referenced environment. Those constraints may be regarded as force fields with a specific spatial dimension. The system allows user, through implementation of specific generative procedures, to manage interactive architectural design processes. The designer is able to explore all possible infinite scenarios and the various possible design alternatives, by changing the parameters values and verifying in real time the results of the changes. Two experiments are presented.

summary The colour is a protagonist in the perception phenomenon. This article shows a method to paint popular houses, based on an analogy between colours and musical notes. The colour palette is obtained by mixing chalk to a popular pigment (pó xadrez) and then establishing equivalence between these colours and a musical scale. The chromaticism is performed according to various generative criteria, one of which adopts the plant as a piano roll, proposing each unit to be painted in the colour of its corresponding note, showing that creative solutions can be achieved including colour modular coordination principles in the design process.

summary Recent technological leaps in data production and computation have afforded both architects and scientists an extraordinary ability to generate information and complex form. Rather than deal in the composition of wholes, architects specializing in generative and parametric design strategies—more formally known as design computation—have adopted a bottom-up approach to the negotiation of constraints within the design process. This renewed interest in complexity has offered alternative methods for investigating the interrelationships of parts to their wholes, and emergent self-organized pattern systems at multiple scales and applications. The contemporary architecture avant-garde has provided many examples that showcase the proven power such digital tools afford the designer, inspiring and leading to the generation of beautiful form. But what are our next steps in addressing complexity? How should architects with expertise in design computation situate themselves in larger design dialogues concerning pressing topics such as those concerning our environment? Biology provides useful systems-based models for architects to study to understand how context specifies form, function, and structure.

summary The design of laboratory buildings entails the implementation of a variety of design constraints such as building codes; design guidelines and technical requirements. The application of these requires from designers the derivation of data not explicitly available at early stages of design, at the same time there is no precise methodology to control the consistency, and accuracy of their application. Many of these constraints deal with providing secure environmental conditions for the activities inside laboratories and their repercussions both for the building occupants and population in general, these constraints mandate a strict control over the building’s Mechanical Equipment (MEP), in particular the Heating Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system. Due to the importance of these laboratory designers are expected to assess their designs not only according spatial relationships, but also design variables such as HVAC efficiency, air pressure hierarchies, operational costs, and the possible implications of their design decisions in the biological safety of the facility. At this point in time, there are no practical methods for making these assessments, without having constant interaction with HVAC specialists. The assessment of laboratory design variables, particularly those technical in nature, such as dimensioning of ducts or energy consumption are usually performed at late stages of design. They are performed by domain experts using data manually extracted from design information, with the addition of domain specific knowledge, the evaluation is done mostly through manual calculations or building simulations. In traditional practices most expert evaluations are performed once the architectural design have been completed, the turn around of the evaluation might take hours or days depending on the methods used by the engineer, therefore reducing the possibility for design alternatives evaluation. The results of these evaluations will give clues about sizing of the HVAC equipment, and might generate the need for design reformulations, causing higher development costs and time delays. Several efforts in the development of computational tools for automated design evaluation such as wheel chair accessibility (Han, Law, Latombe, Kunz, 2002) security and circulation (Eastman, 2009), and construction codes (ww.Corenet.gov.sg) have demonstrated the capabilities of rule or parameter based building assessment; several computer applications capable of supporting HVAC engineers in system designing for late concept or design development exist, but little has been done to assess the capabilities of computer applications to support laboratory design during architectural Preliminary Concept Design(PCD) (Trcka, Hensen, 2010). Developments in CAD technologies such as Building Information Modeling (BIM) have opened doors to formal explorations in generative design using rule based or parametric modeling [7]. BIM represents buildings as a collection of objects with their own geometry, attributes, and relations. BIM also allows for the definition of objects parametrically including their relation to other model objects. BIM has enabled the development of automated rule based building evaluation (Eastman, 2009). Most of contemporary BIM applications contemplate in their default user interfaces access to design constraints and object attribute manipulations. Some even allow for the application of rules over these. Such capabilities make BIM viable platforms for automation of design data derivation and for the implementation of generative based design assessment. In this paper we analyze the possibilities provided by contemporary BIM for implementing generative based design assessment in laboratory buildings. In this schema, domain specific knowledge is embedded in to the BIM system as to make explicit design metrics that can help designers and engineers to assess the performance of design alternatives. The implementation of generative design assessments during PCD can help designers and engineers to identify design issues early in the process, reducing the number of revisions and reconfigurations in later stages of design. And generally improving design performance.
