title Searching for Innovation Through Teaching Digital Fabrication

summary The use of digital fabrication in the discourse and education of architectural students has become a common skill in many schools of architecture. There is a growing demand for computer-aided design (CAD) skills, computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) logic, programming and fabrication knowledge in student education. The relevance of fabrication tools for architecture and design education goes beyond mere competence and can pursue innovation in what Branko Koleravic (2003) observed, “The digital age has radically reconfigured the relationship between conception and production, creating a direct digital link between what can be conceived and what can be built through “file-to-factory” processes of computer numerically controlled (CNC) fabrication”. However, there has been very little written about what students are actually learning through digital fabrication courses and the relevance of the skills required for innovation in the field of digital fabrication.

title Tecnologías disruptivas: programación y fabricación en Latinoamérica [Disruptive technologies: programming and digital fabrication in Latin America]

summary Since 2008 the preference for using different programming methods (Rhinoscript) had been analyzed using blogs. Searching for answers to explain the negative tendency of this year (from 48,063 to 16,332), a second repository was created (Grasshopper) featuring interactive methods and techniques. It has been discovered that of the five geographic regions analyzed Latin America is the only one that preferred the interactive interface (18% over programming). This shows that we are still keeping a strong dependency on the use of stable and safe technologies over disruptive ones that proved to be more efficient in design and fabrication.

title Collaborative Parametric BIM

summary The paper will be focussing on a number of digital design tools used in [our groups credentials]. A new laboratory called […] is developed with Virtual Reality for collaborative architectural design. A brief description of the systems and how they are used to support a design team is given. Synchronic and a-synchronic, local and inter-local communication is made possible. Methods for introducing sustainability in the digital design process and user participation over the Internet will be discussed. The results of the author’s PhD research “Collaborative architectural design in virtual reality” are used to develop a new approach in which team members use their own specific software. Swarm design applications developed in Virtools are used at the start of a project. The objects in the swarm can be urban and architectural functional volumes. Examples of the first are houses, offices, factories, roads and water ways. Examples of the second are working, dining, shopping and waiting spaces. Relations between the functional volumes with or without constraints make the functional volumes swarm to find equilibrium. Everything is dynamic, meaning that relations and functional volumes can change any time. Alternatives can be developed using different values for these parameters and by top-down intervention. When the final global layout has been chosen, using a criteria matrix with sustainability criteria to be judged by all participants, including the future users, a next phase is started amongst professionals using parametric design software. A study into different types of parametric design software makes clear why object parametric software can be used for IFC based BIM, while the more interesting process parametric software can not. To make this clear a pragmatic description of the IFC format is given with a simple example of such a file. Future research will be proposed in which applications of different disciplines are connected through the application programming interfaces, while integrating as much as possible the building information and knowledge in the IFC format.

summary The authors base their efforts on the assumption that future cities will only be called ‘advanced’ and ‘sustainable’ if they evolve as a shared vision between the city users / dwellers (general public) and urban designers, planners, architects, engineers (experts). For visions to be shared and planning processes to be inclusive the involvement of all (urban) actors is paramount. With the increasing urban complexity and the interrelation of phenomena there is also an increasing demand for updated, advanced and re-thought digital tools that could help in forming and enabling such common urban visions. The paper outlines the agenda and connects our on-going research efforts with the fields deemed most crucial for inclusive-for-all, successful participation that can lead to shared visions of future cities. Standing out in interchangeable order and never-ending cyclic process are: (1) education, (2) communication and (3) collaboration.

summary Over the last five years, the use of computer - controlled machinery in the building process has expanded immensely. With the help of parametric software, it has become possible not only to manage ever more complex structures but also to realize them using digital fabrication processes. These increased possibilities in turn place new demands on architectural teaching and its underlying didactic concepts. Taking the “WAVE 0.18” project as an example, this paper demonstrates the possibilities as well as the challenges of new didactic concepts and their practical application at the Chair for Architectural Informatics at the TU Munich.

title Generative Design and the Reduction of Presence

summary Digital design/fabrication is slowly emancipating architectural design from its traditional static/representational role and endowing it instead with a new, generative function. In opposition to the classical isomorphism between drawings and buildings, wherein the second stand as translations of the first, the digital design/fabrication scenario does not strictly fall within a semiotic frame as much as within a quasi biological context, reminiscent of the Aristotelian notion of entelechy. For the digital data does not represent the building as much it actively works to become the building itself. Only upon sending a given file to a machine does the building begin to materialize as an empirical reality, And eventually a habitable space as we empirically know it. And until the digital data actualizes itself, the building qua building is no more than one single, potential possibility among many others. This new universe of digital design/fabrication does not only cause buildings to be produced as quick, precise, multiply-generated objects but also reduces their presence as original entities. Like cars and fashion items, built structures will soon be manufactured as routinely-consumed items that would look original only through the subtle mechanisms of flexibility: frequent alteration of prototype design (Style 2010, Style 2015..) and “perpetual profiling” (mine, yours, hers,..). The generic will necessarily take over the circumstantial. But this truth will be veiled since “customized prototypes” will be produced or altered to individual or personal specifications. This implies that certain “myths” have to be generated to speed up consumption, to stimulate excessive use and to lock people into a continuous system which can generate consumption through a vocabulary of interchangeable, layered and repeatable functions. Samples of “next season’s buildings” will be displayed and disseminated to enforce this strategy of stimulating and channeling desire. A degree of manipulation is involved, and the consumer is flattered into believing that his or her own free assessment of and choice between the options on offer will lead him or her to select the product the advertiser is seeking to sell. From the standpoint of the architect as a maker, the rising upsurge of digital design and fabrication could leave us mourning the loss of what has been a personal stomping ground, namely the intensity of the directly lived experiences of design and building. The direct, sensuous contact with drawings, models and materials is now being lost to a (digital) realm whose attributes refer to physical reality only remotely. Unlike (analogue) drawings and buildings, digital manipulations and prototypes do not exercise themselves in a real space, and are not subjected in the most rigorous way to spatial information. They denote in this sense a loss of immediacy and a withering of corporal thought. This flexible production of space and the consequent loss of immediate experience from the part of the designer will be analyzed within a theoretical framework underpinned mainly by the works of Walter Benjamin. Samples of digitally-produced objects will be used to illustrate this argument.

summary This paper describes a framework for a collaborative, dynamically modifiable product model called FREAC built for the purposes of experimental software development. When developing FREAC, we attempted to realise the following properties that are typically lacking in currently available commercial systems: first, a high degree of flexibility so that it is highly adaptable to the needs of different disciplines; second, the ability to seamlessly connect different tools; third, real-time concurrent modelling by different remote partners; fourth, the ability to save a record of the entire modelling process; fifth, dynamic extensibility both for software developers as well as for the end users of the respective tools.

title A future through an architectural past? Designing an online information package for Al Jahili Fort

summary This paper details the process that students of UAE University’s Department of Architectural Engineering have undergone in packaging architectural heritage data online. Facilitated by the Abu Dhabi Authority for Cultural Heritage, students were introduced to historical data. They digitally reconstructed a historical fort in Al Ain, UAE – Al Jahili Fort – and investigated methods of packaging the gathered information online. Some observations and assessments (strengths and weaknesses) pertaining to the unique historical information packaging are highlighted in this paper. In addition to acquiring skills in producing architectural abstractions and graphic composition, students assessed several online interactive techniques. A set of rules or patterns were prescribed to enhance the clarity of chosen data. While providing insights to the processes of and considerations in designing an online information package for an architectural heritage project, the underlying objective is to question the possibilities and role necessary in sculpting the future of CAAD education to propel the discipline forward through the medium. What would be the implications? It also asserts the notion that digital space may be architectural education’s imminent next ‘final’ frontier.

summary Music and architecture share not only phenomenological similarities in relation to their characteristics - like volume, timbre, tone pitch, instrumentation vs. geometry, materiality, light ambiance or perspective - but imply as well comparability in the process of creation. The investigation of digital tools that cross borders between music and architecture was the starting point for the research project „Mixer Modeling“. Against this background the paper discusses the transformation of a musical composition controller into an intuitive design tool for the generation of architectural geometries. In the same amount that the use of a MIDI-controller increases the degrees of freedom for the simultaneous activation of various parameters the definition of geometric dependencies on the level of visual programming become more important for the resulting geometry.

summary The concept maps built and shared on the internet through the CmapTools software resources were used in this exploratory study to follow and analyze the process of collaborative design in public school learning situations. The samples, taken from a Brazilian architectural graduate public school, were maps built in housing design projects developed in a digital environment. A constructivist approach supports the learning method in the use of the net environment for collaborative design of sustainable social housing. This is the base for further development of alternative methodological - theoretical approaches in the context of teaching sustainable design.

summary This article analyzes the design process of Yona Friedman. Friedman was a conceptual creator of mega - structures that were multiplied in several layers of cities in which users were responsible for choosing designs while being informed of the consequences. They used a computer containing the design options and described their way of life, which was translated into the use of environments. According to the spaces chosen from this list, the user could reconfigure the space. Although, considering that the city was an environment, the space could be selected while watching a computer simulation. Users’ choices depended on absolutely parameterized rules.

summary This paper presents an experience about BIM curriculum from Faculty of Architecture, Rangsit University, which has been implemented since 2010. Our approach is to introduce BIM into the first year architectural design curriculum both as a tool and as a new way to practice design. The objective of this paper is to identify problems encountered from the class and typical misconceptions about BIM curriculum based on our experience. Problems encountered are 1) The need to boost students’ attention, 2) The lack of acceptability criteria of the students’ design flaws, 3) The lack of BIM Guideline to be used in the curriculum, and 4) The need to grow the BIM thinking in other advanced studios. Typical misconceptions identified are 1) BIM is just another design tool 2) Traditional design process can be used in a BIM design studio, and 3) BIM limits creativity. Finally, we propose how to improve the curriculum and compare the BIM design process to traditional design process.

summary The paper presents a teaching experiment using the LOGO language to introduce geometric programming to architectural students with no a priory coding knowledge. Based on extreme simplicity as well as instant visual feedback, the language allows to introduce core programming concepts with little technicality. The extension of the language to a 3D space triggers designers interest and creativity while the introduction of a simple robotic drawing machine confront them with a simple fabrication context. These elements concur to develop a critical approach of the use of digital tools in the architectural design process, with the underlying aim to raise the students awareness on the implication of tooling on their design practice.

summary This paper demonstrates how digitally fabricated vacuum-formed components can provide a new type of efficient construction applicable to architecture. Vacuum forming has the advantage of rapid mass-production capability of 3D curved forms. Recent digital fabrication technologies, such as 3D CAD and CNC machining, have dramatically reduced the cost and time for making the mould. In combination with biodegradable plastic, such as PLA (poly lactic acid) made of biopolymer, it could open up new type of sustainable construction system, which is applicable for temporal disaster housings or exhibition booths.

summary Differently from other regions in the Planet, since 2010, in Latin America textual programming language (Rhinoscripting) is being replaced by its visual equivalent (Grasshopper). This is a consequence of our preference for an interactive platform, and because our design problems are not as complex, so we aim to control geometrical problems or aspects belonging to an product scale instead of an architectural one. Problems emerging when creating code could be improved by modifying and reusing existing solutions as a starting point, since learning would not be centered in the object but in the process of creating it, using a suitable instrument.

summary In 2001, discussions began on the elaboration of a new Pedagogical Project (PPC) for the School of Architecture and Urbanism (CAU) of the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), but only in 2010 a proposal was presented utilizing new didactic-pedagogical concepts and dynamics. After eight years of its implementation, and without a formal evaluation, it was verified the lack of a methodology that manages the teaching process according to the principles formulated in the PPC2010. This article consists of the analysis of the teaching of the CAU /UFPE design process. It also contains a proposal`s presentation to update the curricular structure through the meta-methodology of Geodesign. The proposal strives for a better flow of information, integration and contextualization of contents.

summary We present a teaching experience carried out during the second quarter of 2010 in the Industrial Informatics 2 course of FAUD UNMdP Industrial Design Product oriented career, about three-dimensional and communication module. We tackle this practice, developed in the digital workshop environment, from the perspective of Design Thinking through an approach to the multidimensional implicit in the design process. The experience walked through the initial product selection and recognition of coding guidelines for design; redesign, 3D modeling and product prototyping; and result communicating. The shift from a geometric to an information based paradigm is allowing a wide range of industries to more easily converge. Consequently, a much broader range of interdisciplinary fabrication processes are now available to architects and designers. summary Novice designers are gaining increased access to CAD tools for design computing and digital fabrication that were once exclusively used by expert designers. As evidenced by the rise in manufacturing incubation facilities, novices can prototype their ideas in ways similar to expert designers. Also available for novice designers are online rendering consultants, online manufacturing and online ecommerce as a way to distribute and sell products. Discussed here are the reasons for this emergence, complications when using design and digital fabrication as a standard mode of production and new focus for experts.
