summary Digital tools present the opportunity for incorporating performance analysis into the architectural design process. Acoustic performance is an important criterion for architectural design. There is much known about sound absorption but little about sound scattering, even though scattering is recognized to be one of the most important factors in predicting the acoustic performance of architectural spaces. This paper proposes a workflow for the design of complex architectural surfaces and the prediction of their sound scattering properties. This workflow includes the development of computational design tools, geometry generation, fabrication of test surfaces, measurement of acoustic performance, the incorporation of this data into the generative tool. The Hexagon Wall is included and discussed as an illustrative design study.

title Simulation by Design: A Parametric Design Tool for Zero Energy Buildings

summary To address the shortcomings of integrating building simulation in architectural design and to make it more appealing to students, a simple interface to Energyplus was created. This interface models a simple rectangular building that is passively heated by direct gain and cooled by ventilation. A simple photovoltaic interface has also been added to supply fan energy. This tool has an OpenGL modeler for visualization and uses Energyplus for calculations. The interface will run a full year simulation and graph the results. The results are reported in a yearly graph that shows the outdoor and indoor temperature. The indoor temperature range is based on adaptive comfort level. The interface was tested and used in an introductory design studio in order to comply with the 2010 imperative. The students simulated a simple box and changed the buildings parameters until the building fell within the adaptive comfort zone for most of the year. The climate simulated was Chicago, IL. Using these parameters the students then designed the building. The resulting designs show that even though the students were restricted in parameters, such as window percentage, they were still able to creatively design unique buildings that use zero to negative net energy for heating and cooling in a climate such as Chicago.

title Augmented Reality-Based Education and Fire Protection for Traditional Korean Buildings

summary This study examines an application of Augmented Reality technology (AR) for Korean Cultural Traditional Buildings, specifically, the Namdaemun Gate, "National Treasure No 1" of the Republic of Korea. Unfortunately, in February 2008, the Namdaemun Gate burned down, despite the efforts of many firemen, as the main difficulty was getting the fire under control without any structural knowledge of the wooden building. Hence, with the great advances in digital technology, an application of virtual technical information to traditional buildings is needed, and the new technology of AR offers many such advantages for digital architectural design and construction fields. While AR is already being considered as new design approach for architecture, outdoor AR is another practical application that can take advantage of new wearable computer equipment (Head-mounted display also know as HMD, position and orientation sensors, and mobile computing) to superimpose virtual graphics of traditional buildings (in this case, Namdaemun Gate) in a real outdoor scene. Plus, outdoor AR also allows the user to move freely around and inside a 3D virtual construction, thereby offering important training opportunities, for example, specific structural information in the case of firemen and mission planning in the case of a real-life emergency. In this example, the proposed outdoor AR system is expected to provide important educational information on traditional wooden building for architects, archaeologists, and engineers, while also assisting firemen to protect such special buildings.

title e-Warisan SENIBINA: Towards a collaborative architectural virtual heritage experience

summary This research introduces the concepts of virtual heritage in the field of architecture. It then continues with the fundamentals of virtual heritage (VH) metadata structure adopted from the UNESCO guidelines. The key highlights to the content of e-Warisan SENIBINA will be demonstrated via techniques to reconstruct heritage buildings towards a collaborative architectural virtual heritage experience as closely to originally design features. The virtual reconstruction will be based on the techniques suggested by the research team tested earlier in a smaller scale of advanced lighting technique for virtual heritage representations. This research will suggest (1) content preparation for creating collaborative architectural heritage, (2) effective low-polygon modelling solutions that incorporate global illumination (GI) lighting for real-time simulation and (3) texturing techniques to accommodate reasonable detailing and give the essence of the VH.

title Collaboration in Parametric Design: Analyzing User Interaction during Information Sharing

summary Designers work in groups. They need to share information either synchronously or asynchronously as they work with parametric modeling software, as with all computer-aided design tools. Receiving information from collaborators while working may intrude on their work and thought processes. Little research exists on how the reception of design updates influences designers in their work. Nor do we know much about designer preferences for collaboration. In this paper, we examine how sharing and receiving design updates affects designers’ performances and preferences. We present a system prototype to share changes on demand or in continuous mode while performing design tasks. A pilot study measuring the preferences of nine pairs of designers for different combinations of control modes and design tasks shows statistically significant differences between the task types and control modes. The types of tasks affect the preferences of users to the types of control modes. In an apparent contradiction, user preference of control modes contradicts task performance time.

summary This paper is about the fabrication process of the DesCours pavilion, a project that was realized in the context of a graduate design studio in the Fall Semester of 2010. The assembly and construction process of the pavilion will be used to show how parametric software, such as Grasshopper can inform fabrication and material systems. The paper will explain the fabrication process of a pavilion in detail and make an argument for plastic as a material that not only responds to the malleable characteristic of digital tools but also to environmental issues.

summary The first component of a building implemented in a virtual prototype concerning the management of a building is a lighting system. It was applied in a study case. The interactive application allows the examination of the physical model, visualizing, for each element modeled in 3D and linked to a database, the corresponding technical information concerned with the use of the material, calculated for different points in time during their life. The control of a lamp stock, the constant updating of lifetime information and the planning of periodical local inspections are attended on the prototype. This is an important mean of cooperation between collaborators involved in the building management.

summary Future Cities – the title of the 2010 eCAADe Conference describes one of the major challenges of the 21st century. The conference theme is a logical evolution from previous years in that it expands the focus of interest from the building to larger scales and higher complexity. The conference contributions describe methods and instruments that were developed in the last three decades and apply them to city and territorial planning. The eCAADe proceedings demonstrate that CAAD research and education of the past prepared the ground for the future and for the increased responsibility of the CAAD community. The population of cities has developed worldwide from a minority to the majority. Cities are the largest, most complex and most dynamic man-made systems. As vibrant centres of cultural life and of mega events, they are engines that drive local and global economies. However, their growth was in the fewest cases determined by sustainability goals. As a result, contemporary metropolitan territories are often environmentally, socially and economically unsustainable entities placing increasing pressure on the surrounding rural areas. No longer do traditional methods support the planning and managing of large cities – these methods have reached their limits. Parallel to the revolution in the design of buildings, we need a radical re-thinking of the planning, design, development and management process of cities and urban-rural systems. Compared to buildings, urban and rural systems involve a much higher number of stakeholders and decision makers. We need to study and simulate the effects and side effects of urban-rural planning or re-development much earlier in the process than normally done today. The goal seems clear: the transformation of existing and the planning of new sustainable urban-rural systems. As ordering principles we can build on experiences with building architecture. Complexity, dynamics, scale, and the urban metabolism evolve as promising research and education areas.

summary The research that is presented describes the geometrical analysis and the digital reconstruction of one of the most important designs by Le Corbusier: the City of Three Millions Inhabitants; it represents one of the most impressive solutions of the idea of Future City done during the XX Century, and a lot of its architectural elements are now part of contemporary buildings. The aim of the research was to understand the main morphological aspects of it and compare the different solutions made by the author during his life, starting from the first public presentation in occasion of the Salon d’Automne in Paris (1922) and to reconstruct the 3D digital realistic-textured model of it, in order to realize the video that describes the whole project of the city; the research was done at the Faculty of Architecture of the IUAV University of Venice.

summary Virtual Reality (VR) is usually recognized as a tool that enables the viewer to move freely in a three dimensional digital environment. In this virtual world, different levels of immersion could be reached. Using VR to visualize sites and places from the past, presents and future is widely acknowledged. This study is making use of a recently installed U-Cave theatre at Birzeit University (BZU) in Palestine and a Con-Cave VR theatre at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB).In the study, we test hypotheses connected to presence in virtual reality environments, using the case of historical sites. Historical sites in general are important for reasons of cultural identification and environmental integrity. In many historical sites, it is difficult for a layperson to read and understand the meaning of the site, for that the remaining ruins don’t provide enough information. This study will contribute to improving the public understanding for historical sites by unfolding the role of Virtual Reality to overcome the harsh reality of many damaged historical sites. The story-line of the site can be easily portrayed by re-constructing the original site in a virtual environment. The study also elaborates on the enriched sense of presence made possible by implementing different levels of details in the VR environment. Presence in VR environments is usually defined as “being there”, with high consideration of the physical ether of the virtual environment, the definition confines attention to the sensation of place. This study calls for expanding the attention to the dimension of time that is made possible by innovative design of VR environment. The study argues that virtual reality technology does not only provide a 3-D experience to subjects, it can also add a fourth dimension by conveying the unconsciousness of man from the meanwhile moment to a different timeframe. Based on the current knowledge on presence in virtual environments, we will use a questionnaire to measure subjective presence for the two VR theatre systems. The study will make use of the following factors in order to determine the degree of presence in the virtual environment: (1) naturalness of interface design and involvement, (2) control and interaction, (3) quality of technical capabilities, and (4) negative effects. The outcome of the study will verify or falsify some of the following hypotheses: • There is a correlation between modeling techniques and presence. The perception of the visual experience differs between traditional media and an immersive VR environment. • A presentation of a historical site in a VR-Cave environment will increase our subject’s awareness of the identity of the historical site. • The presence level is correlated to previous real exposure. Subjects who had been to a ruined historical site in real life, would experience higher level of presence toward the VR presentation than those who had not been to the historical site in reality. • Because of the display enclosure surround effect, it is believed that presence in a Con-Cave would be higher than of U-Cave VR environment.

title The Sustainable Management of Remote Construction Projects

summary This paper discusses investigates the use of present project management practices and systems by the construction department of the Saudi Electric Company (SEC), Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). It highlights shortages of the current management practices and systems and how it affects badly the sustainability dimensions of projects such as quality, scope, time and cost. The literature review suggests that Advanced Electronic Management and Communications systems (AEMCS) may help companies in managing remote projects efficiently thus minimizing the travel time, reducing unnecessary project costs and raising the quality of projects. Little research though was done regarding this issue and it found few unique management problems. A field survey was conducted on contractors and SEC’s supervision teams. It revealed that some of the remote project’s management problems however were caused by unprofessional and non standard project management conduct. It also found that traditional systems are very popular whereas advanced electronic systems are of little use. Participants expressed their concerns about the SEC’s present project management practices and their views regarding the implementation of advanced electronic project management systems and its possible impact on projects’ performance and process. The survey’s outcomes indicated that advanced electronic management systems should be tailored to SEC’s present and prospected needs, meanwhile SEC’s present project management methodologies should be adjusted into sustainable management practices. This would guarantee that project management practices will be substantially improved and sustainable objectives of projects are met. The study should motivate the SEC and other companies in KSA to review their present project management practices and systems, investigate the potentiality of advanced electronic systems use in managing remote projects and explore how to embrace sustainability’s dimensions in project management practices.

summary Modern materialization of architecture depends on the use of regularized, highly processed remotely - sourced materials produced through a centralized, industrialized process. This involves energy use, increasing the environmental impact and cost of the final structure. This study investigates leveraging digital technology to capture near - site material geometry, providing design tools and processing the material on - site. Optimization techniques are applied to minimize the use and processing of materials while meeting design goals and engineering constraints. A simulation and prototype using digitally selected and cut trees as main bearing members in a structure is used to confirm the proposed process.

summary Currently, most approaches to graphic evaluative frameworks (GEFs) for the early-stage evaluation of bioclimatic design strategies adopt a design-tool metaphor, wherein a battery of analytical routines is performed by a software tool based upon a standardized weather file from which a stock set of graphic material is produced. In seeking to evaluate a broad range of climates and to address a wide variety of passive design strategies, existing climate visualization and evaluation tools position themselves far outside of the context of a situated design problem. Remaining agnostic to the particularities of site, program, tectonic system, and material behavior these tools become, by definition, generic. As a consequence, while such design-tools can be effective in evaluating particular relationships between environmental resource, demand profile, and built-system, they maintain a potential to be rendered ineffective in any outlying cases not specifically anticipated by their authors . Situated Bioclimatic Information Design (SBID) presents an alternative approach that targets a class of design strategies prominent among these outlying cases: those highly responsive to negotiation between the continually fluctuating resources within microclimates and the fluctuating demand profile of the building program. Using a custom-built weather data parser a number of diagrams and data visualizations have been produced under this approach. These visualizations are not only useful in and of themselves for aligning design strategies to specific contexts, but they also illustrate the foundations of a larger theoretical framework for the processing and visualization of climatic data for effective utilization of bioclimatic flows.

summary The paper states that most applications of parametric modeling to architecture and urban design fall into one of two strands of either form for form’s sake, or the negotiation of environmental concerns, while approaches which allow scenarios to be easily tested and modified without the application of complex and expensive technologies are mostly absent, although they seem appropriate in urban design. A survey of existing approaches confirms the statement, and an example of the application of basic knowledge of geometry and parametric thinking to urban design forms the argument of the paper. The pros and cons of this simple approach is discussed, and the paper concludes, that while it does not represent a suitable solution in all cases, it fills a gap among the existing approaches to parametric urban design.

summary This article presents the results of a study that is being carried out at the University of Caxias do Sul, Brazil. The goal of the study is to publicize a collection of the modern architecture in southern Brazil through interactive media on a web portal. This study presents the development of a digital media to publicize a collection composed of single - family houses, for a total of two - hundred - and - fifteen residences that are organized by city and decade, from 1930 to 1970. The buildings of each decade are analyzed in terms of their language and compositional features. It also presents brief biographies of the architects, engineers and builders involved in the construction.

summary This article discusses the development of GIS technologies applied to the management of sets of historical sites and single buildings, what is called in international literature HIS, or heritage information systems. With HIS it is possible to represent a historical site through a map or a DTM, which associate attributes from the historical buildings. For the conceptual modeling ontological studies were adopted to define the concepts and relationships with the application’s domain. The software ArcGIS was adopted as the development tool for the HIS, as well as the geographic database that stores the base map.

summary Due to the increased request for representative structures and for spaces to be used independent of the weather conditions, contemporary cities increasingly integrate public covered spaces (shadowed squares and streets, courtyards, historic commercial galleries, etc.) in the urban fibre. Facing the design of large roof structures for semi outdoor spaces is increasingly common for architects and engineers. When focusing on large roofs, aesthetics, structural performance and economics often dominate the design process. However, the current increased emphasis on energy-related aspects generates new challenges. Particularly, the use of renewable energy resources needs to be confronted. In this paper we will address the subject through a case study whose design aimed at integrating performance evaluations in the very early stages of the process. The case study focuses on the so-called “Vela roof”. This roof is part of a larger project currently under construction in Bologna (Italy). The focus of the study concerns the use of on-site renewable climate (energy) resources with special attention given passive reduction of summer overheating and daylight. For these tasks a parametric model was developed to support the decision making process and the paper will present its potential with respect to performance-oriented design during the conceptual design phase of roof structure. The very first conceptual design developed by the architectural office was assumed as a starting point for the inclusion of performance criteria. In the preliminary design of the roof uncomfortable conditions were expected under the whole roof in the summer. Various strategies for improving the thermal comfort were investigated, involving a large set of combined systems. Not all of these will be detailed in this paper. Instead we will focus on the ones directly affected by the geometry of the roof. Those are mainly air flow for cooling and the reduction of solar gain, in combination with their effects on daylight. Their investigation was based on a chain of dependencies to be integrated in the design process. With respect to that, parametric modelling was used. Parametric modelling allows both geometrical entities and their relationships to be represented. These relationships are structured in a hierarchical chain of dependencies, established during the preliminary parameterization process. The independent properties of the model are usually expressed through independent parameters, and their variations generate different configurations of the model. By making use of this potential, three project scales were parametrically explored. At the large scale, parametric variations of the overall shape of the roof were investigated in relation to cooling through ventilation and here the parametric model allowed for the generation of both different configurations of the roof, including its structural morphology and variations of its structural tessellation. At the medium scale, the integration of openable modules was investigated in relation to air extraction for cooling; with respect to this, the parametric model allows exploring openings based on variations of size and distribution. At the small scale, various options were explored for the cladding system, in order to reduce the direct solar gain while still allowing the income of indirect natural light. The parametric model was used to investigate the configuration of self-shading modules and their integration in the structure. Specific emphasis will be given to the small scale. The advantages in design process and the current limits of the parametric modelling approach used here will be discussed in the paper.

summary The paper addresses the design of large roof structures for semi outdoor spaces through an investigation of a type of performance-oriented design, which aims at integrating performance evaluations in the early stages of the design process. Particularly, aiming at improving daylight and thermal comfort under large structures, the paper focuses on the exploration of passive solar strategies to reduce the need for imported energies. Referring to this context, the potential of parametric modeling is investigated with respect to performance-oriented design and a method, denoted ParaGen, is presented, based on the integration of parametric modeling and genetic algorithms. The potentials of the method are shown by discussing a case study, the roof SolSt. The design process of SolSt is based on parametric variations of its curvature, the density of its modules and the geometry of its cladding and explored based on the daylight and solar exposure of the covered spaces.

summary The goal of this research is to see what the influence is of reducing the energy consumption on the building layout. It is our expectation that increasing the energy reduction of buildings cannot continues without changing the layout of the building and/ or the layout f the neighborhood. During our experiments we noticed a strange phenomenon which contradicts our assumption. This paper is about the strange phenomenon we encounter and why it happened.
