This paper presents the PedNaTAS system, an agent-based integrated decision support system that assesses pedestrian thermal comfort from bottom-up.

summary The international architecture of the last decades has examples of works and architectural projects presented graphic from the two-dimensional unfolding of three-dimensional folded surfaces. These valuable individual experiences have not represented generalized strategies that can be transferred to the professional practice and to architectural education. This article uses results of more than 10 workshops (with Unfolding and Folding methodologies) developed in Chile, Argentina and Brazil to build up a pedagogy for the project that makes it possible to investigate the spatial and material properties of folded compositions in Architecture. It proposes to review and update project instruments through the incorporation of Parametric Design; 3D origami software and Digital Manufacturing.

summary Over the last few years, a large majority of construction work has moved overseas. In response to this, our engineering practice has been involved in a large number of Asian and Middle East design competitions, usually executed in a compressed timeframe. Building codes usually include very specific requirements regarding the lateral performance of a building under seismic and wind loads. This is especially true in China. Our structural engineering practice has thus developed a variety of digital tools customized to building code requirements, in order to provide relevant structural feedback in an appropriate design time frame. The paper will discuss our recent digital design work in the context of building code requirements and information sharing. Our innovations have centered on three progressive spheres of innovation: internal efficiency, communication and collaboration. We propose that only with closer and more transparent collaboration will the building industry be effective and efficient in meeting clients’ needs. However, without first addressing a firm’s internal capabilities of efficiency and communication, the firm will be unable to effectively participate in the collaborative process. This paper begins by discussing various custom Rhino-Grasshopper components to facilitate our internal design process. We then touch on the communication realm discussing work in lowering the barriers for information sharing. Lastly, we explore the necessary shifts in thinking required to move beyond linear design exploration and the exciting opportunity to deliver truly innovative design solutions.

title Parametric Variation Revealing Architectural Untranslatability

summary This paper describes a recently concluded graduate seminar which tested how form-generative design tactics of algorithmic work could be productively brought to bear on the conceptual analysis of existing buildings. The seminar did not seek to optimize performance or aesthetic value but simply to query the mechanics and consequences of translation as an act. Seminar participants mined existing buildings as sources for parametric rule-sets which were subsequently applied to varying media fields (e. g., physical materials, text, and graphics). This application revealed that specific media resist certain kinds of translation. This peculiar resistance suggested that characteristics of architecture exist which might broadly be called untranslatable.

summary In strategic planning and design, planners can benefit a great deal from planning models and simulations (2D, 3D and 4D). Carrying out strategic planning and design with the support of (spatial) models can open up a bright spectrum of opportunities and insights that were not evident before. Planning models and simulations support an awareness-raising process. In this context, space syntax also fits in. In the following we will discuss the constraints and opportunities of space syntax and show how space syntax can add value to strategic planning and design (based on the Ljubljana masterplan) for a sustainable and sustaining built environment.

summary This paper proposes Buckminster Fuller’s concept of pattern integrity as a context for understanding computational techniques in environmentally responsive design. We argue that successful integration in this context requires a continuous design medium that allows for heterogeneous, mutable techniques and models. This model of integration is demonstrated by reference to a current project for a large canopy structure in Singapore with specific focus on issues of environmental mediation, object-oriented programming for CAD environments, and functional programming techniques within parametric modeling systems. We discuss the applicability of these novel integrative approaches to wider problems in computational design.

summary Presently, collaboration is difficult on large and complex parametric models due to the illegibility of unstructured schemata. This lack of legibility makes it hard for an outside author to understand the model, reducing their ability to edit and share the model. This paper investigates whether the legibility of parametric models is enhanced through restructuring the schema with modular programming principles. During a series of thinking-aloud interviews, designers asked to describe the function of unfamiliar schemata could consistently better comprehend the schemata structured with modular principles. Modular programming is found to be a small change to parametric modelling that derives clear benefits in terms of legibility, particularly when the model is large and used in a collaborative environment.

title Understanding visual scripts: Improving collaboration through modular programming

summary Modularisation is a well-known method of reducing code complexity, yet architects are unlikely to modularise their visual scripts. In this paper the impact that modules used in visual scripts have on the architectural design process is investigated with regard to legibility, collaboration, reuse and design modification.Through a series of thinking-aloud interviews, and through the collaborative design and construction of the parametric Dermoid pavilion, modules are found to impact the culture of collaborative design in architecture through relatively minor alterations to how architects organise visual scripts.

summary This research paper presents a specific understanding of the relations between parametric modelling activities and architectural conception activities. Our main question is: Can we make a distinction between cognitive operations of parametric modelling and cognitive operations of architectural conception? To shed light on this question, this paper is leaning on analyses of some uses of the parametric modeler Digital Project. The cases studies are students’ projects from two Architecture Studios: the Cross Over Studio of the Universität die Angewandte in Vienna; and the Studio P9 Digital Knowledge of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Paris Malaquais in Paris. Our main result is the observation of a distinction between cognitive operations of parametric modelling and cognitive operations of architectural conception. The distinction of these two kinds of operations leads at questioning the relation between them. We have questioned these relations in terms of induction from one to another. But some interesting merging of these two kinds of operations appeared also.

summary Sustainable design and ecological building are the most significant global challenges for the design profession. To meet new building regulations and national targets for carbon emissions, all future buildings will be judged on their ‘green’ merits. For architects to maintain a competitive edge in a global market, innovation is now key; the design of new processes, technologies and materials that combat carbon emissions and improve the sustainable performance of buildings are paramount. Contemporary practices have responded by setting up multi- disciplinary internal research and development teams, with offices such as Foster + Partners, HOK and Aedas setting the bar for ground-breaking research and development. The aim of internal groups is often to adapt and create new technologies and materials and to borrow ways of working from other disciplines, to focus on innovation rather than incrementally increasing performance or efficiency. This title offers insights into how a wide range of established and emerging practices are rising to meet these challenges. In pursuit of integrated sustainability and low-energy building, material and formal innovation and new tools and technologies, it illustrates that the future of architecture is evolving in an exchange of ideas across disciplines. Incorporating the creation of new knowledge about ecological building within the profession, it also identifies the emergence of a collective will to seek out new routes that build in harmony with the environment.

summary During the design phase, the architect is required to create images in order to give a shape to his project and communicate it. These visual representations satisfy architectural codes established over the years. Thus, the architect who wants to make public his creation gives representations of impressions and emotions. This way, the represented atmosphere reveals the designed architecture because it refers to personal experiences by involving our different senses. So, we question ourselves on the ability of images to reflect atmospheres projected by architects. The difficult part is to make visual representations which translate perceptions communicated by all our senses.

summary This paper proposes guidelines for designing kinetic architectural structures, in which rules based on Shape Grammars are used for motion capturing and design. There is an increasing demand for adaptive architecture that reconfigures itself physically to meet functional or climatic changes. These guidelines provide a way for the designer to describe and design novel kinetic structures. Based on Shape Grammars, the rule A ->t(A) is introduced. (A) means an Active Shape, that is a physical shape with motion observed or created by the designer.t(A) means a new Active Shape produced by applying one or more transformations t on the original Active Shape to produce a novel motion.

summary This paper focuses on the development of a knowledge model in the context of energy efficiency and indoor climate interventions, their impacts on each other and on architectural design preferences (for instance architectural expression or any spatial functionality aspect) via an existing house case study. In addition, it attempts to discuss how this type of model can be a reference for a decision support tool and be applied to the (re)design of dwellings. The model is considered to provide an integral knowledge base for the design professional both to evaluate existing designs and to use it as a support during design and decision making in order to reach the best possible solution, with optimal performance in terms of indoor comfort, energy-efficiency and overall design performance. In other words, its aim is to enable the assessment of the performance of the end result with respect to design choices, beforehand. In this paper, design performance is modeled by means of fuzzy logic operations. It is a method to deal with subjective and vague requirements such as low energy consumption, low overheating risk, high comfort, etc. The method of intelligent information processing is explained and a partial application is presented.

summary Integral structural optimization and fabrication seeks the synthesis of two original approaches; that of topological optimization (TO) and robotic hotwire cutting (HWC) (Mcgee 2011). TO allows for the reduction of up to 70% of the volume of concrete to support a given structure (Sondergaard & Dombernowsky 2011). A strength of the method is that it allows to come up with structural designs that lie beyond the grasp of traditional means of design. A design space is a discretized volume, delimiting where the optimization will take place. The number of cells used to discretize the design space thus sets the resolution of the TO. While the approach of the application of TO as a constitutive design tool centers on structural aspects in the design phase (Xie 2010), the outcome of this process are structures that cannot be realized within a conventional budget. As such the ensuing design is optimal in a narrow sense; whilst optimal structurally though, construction can be prove to be prohibitively expensive.
