summary The application of digital design methods and technologies related to BIM and Integrated Practice Delivery are altering the how and what of architectural design. The way contemporary architecture is conceived and made is being transformed through the digital methods, processes and applications used in BIM. How architectural education and the design studio model evolve to reflect, interpret, translate, or challenge the multiplicitous and simultaneously variable modes of contemporary practice present opportunity and risk to this generation of digital scholars, educators and practitioners. Might we re-conceive the design studio as a venue in which a critical dialogue about how the many facets of architectural design practice are engaged? The possibilities afforded by BIM and Integrated Practice Delivery and digital design technologies are increasingly affecting what we make and simultaneously how we make as architects. Digital modeling of both geometry and information is replacing (or displacing) digital drawing. We see diminishing returns of the value of transforming three-dimensional spatial/formal ideas into two-dimensional conventional abstractions of those complex ideas. This comprehensive thinking promoted by BIM processes is one of the key advantages of using BIM leading to true design innovation. The reiterative learning process of design promoted in BIM promotes a rethinking of design studio education.

title 3D Printed Textiles from Textile Code: Structural Form and Material Operations

summary Translation of 3 traditional textile structures to digital code to make 3D printed textiles is discussed in this paper. The relationship of the behavior of that printed textile to the geometry and material of the textile unit is also examined. If architects, designers and scientists developing textile technologies for buildings, clothing or other objects can begin to understand and digitally construct different categories of textile structures, as well as understand how the behavior of that textile relates to its structure, then they can better understand how to design form active systems, or structures that are able to move when required.

title Creative Design Between Representation and Simulation

summary Milestone figures of architecture all have their different views on what comes first, form or function. They also vary in their definitions of creativity. Apparently, creativity is very strongly related to ideas and how they can be generated. It is also correlated with the process of thinking and developing. Creative products, whether architectural or otherwise, and whether tangible or intangible, are originated from ‘good ideas’ (Elnokaly, Elseragy and Alsaadani, 2008). On one hand, not any idea, or any good idea, can be considered creative but, on the other hand, any creative result can be traced back to a good idea that initiated it in the beginning (Goldschmit and Tatsa, 2005). Creativity in literature, music and other forms of art is immeasurable and unbounded by constraints of physical reality. Musicians, painters and sculptors do not create within tight restrictions. They create what becomes their own mind’s intellectual property, and viewers or listeners are free to interpret these creations from whichever angle they choose. However, this is not the case with architects, whose creations and creative products are always bound with different physical constraints that may be related to the building location, social and cultural values related to the context, environmental performance and energy efficiency, and many more (Elnokaly, Elseragy and Alsaadani, 2008). Remarkably, over the last three decades computers have dominated in almost all areas of design, taking over the burden of repetitive tasks so that the designers and students can focus on the act of creation. Computer aided design has been used for a long time as a tool of drafting, however in this last decade this tool of representation is being replaced by simulation in different areas such as simulation of form, function and environment. Thus, the crafting of objects is moving towards the generation of forms and integrated systems through designer-authored computational processes. The emergence and adoption of computational technologies has significantly changed design and design education beyond the replacement of drawing boards with computers or pens and paper with computer-aided design (CAD) computer-aided engineering (CAE) applications. This paper highlights the influence of the evolving transformation from Computer Aided Design (CAD) to Computational Design (CD) and how this presents a profound shift in creative design thinking and education. Computational-based design and simulation represent new tools that encourage designers and artists to continue progression of novel modes of design thinking and creativity for the 21st century designers. Today computational design calls for new ideas that will transcend conventional boundaries and support creative insights through design and into design. However, it is still believed that in architecture education one should not replace the design process and creative thinking at early stages by software tools that shape both process and final product which may become a limitation for creative designs to adapt to the decisions and metaphors chosen by the simulation tool. This paper explores the development of Computer Aided Design (CAD) to Computational Design (CD) Tools and their impact on contemporary design education and creative design.

summary Why use the terms synthetic and ecology in the context of a conference dedicated to the field of digital architecture, computation and fabrication? How do we begin to unpack the synthetic union of diverse elements, processes, collaborators, and code underlying any single contemporary design or research project? What could our field gain by interrogating these diverse ecologies? What are the relationships and interactions between our design processes, including our various tools and techniques, and the multiple environments with which we routinely work, collaborate and make? It is these questions and more that we hope to address at this year’s “Synthetic Digital Ecologies” conference. A quick scan of the papers and projects that will be presented at ACADIA reveals an extraordinary ecology of experimental research that emerged by working between messy labs, studios, workshops, hacker spaces and the like. In many ways today’s so-called “digital architects” do not feel compelled to distinguish between what is digitally designed and what is not. They are leading the way through a promiscuous and synthetic mixing of skill sets, of pens and paper, hardware and software, electronics and g-code. In a single research project these designers might collaborate with a computer scientist, a robotics expert and a glass blower, and in many cases they might even attempt to do all of these things themselves. It was with this in mind that we put forth an international call inviting, “… architects, fabricators, engineers, media artists, technologists, software developers, hackers and others in related fields of inquiry …” to submit papers and projects for this year’s conference. This year the proceedings have been organized into twelve synthetic categories based around the potential for diverse research topics to inform new and unexpected conversations. Instead of organizing peer-reviewed papers and projects through their formal characteristics, we were interested in forming new synthetic categories by curating unexpected juxtapositions. This ecology of ideas and research was meant to provoke and inspire new ways of thinking, making, building and collaborating.

summary This paper discusses a methodology for generating architectural form parametrically from structural logics such that an architectural vocabulary can be generated for use in design. It intends to further the discussion of how parametrics can play a role in architectural design. Parametric applications are facilitating the use of engineering design feedback into the architectural process, allowing architects to ‘tune’ their designs. In this case, structural form is discussed. The nature of parametrics makes the use of structural principles relatively simple because they are already in the numeric form of equations. As well, parametrics make the generation of alternatives easy because of the iterative nature of the tool. As such, including the basis of structural principles in the logic of the parametrics allows the design to function performatively in both an architectural and a structural sense.

summary The intention of this paper is to discuss the effort to spread knowledge and technology to a group of people (teachers, students and professionals), who would probably take much longer to have the chance to use new technologies as a design tool. Connecting two events called Road Show and Workshop, the paper shows the methods, processes and solutions achieved throughout different activities and its effects on the use of Digital fabrication and rapid prototyping as a design and materialization tools. In such case, it is a good example on how to spread the news and provide a starting point to make people more aware and train them to become future users of these technologies. The materialization of the results are shown.

summary Isovists and isovist fi elds can be used to numerically capture the visual properties of spatial confi gurations (e.g. fl oor plans or urban layouts). To a certain degree these properties allow one to make statements about how spaces affect people. The question that serves as the starting point of this study is to examine whether spatial confi gurations ca n generated on the basis of these properties. This question is explored using an experimental approach for the computer-based generation of two-dimensional urban layouts. The spatial arrangements of two-dimensional elements (building-footprints) within a given boundary is optimised in terms of the desired isovist fi eld properties by means of an evolutionary strategy. The paper presents the results of this optimisation and discusses the advantages of this method compared with pattern books as commonly used in architecture.

summary This paper presents the Hybrid Territory Project, a cultural public policies research project carried ou by Nomads.usp, the Center for Studies of Interactive Living, of the University of São Paulo, Brazil. The central theme of the project is to understand how public cultural policies can make use of digital media in an effort to connect people and groups living in social realities apart from each other. The project seeks to bring physical and virtual instances together by means of cultural actions in urban areas. Moreover, it aims to design coexistence from joint work carried out by diverse actors, including architects, who have a voice in defi ning the project goals, actions, and methods. It is expected that the project will provide strategies for public policies to lay down conditions favoring the coexistence of differences in cities as enriching and desirable.

summary During building design processes, designers have to predict and evaluate future building performances oriented to its intended use and users. Current BIM and IFC technologies support designers allowing data exchange and information interoperability but, since their lack in semantics, they don’t provide any knowledge implementation about how the designed building will be actually used and how people will interact with it. The research described in this paper aims to overcome this shortcoming by developing a new modelling approach, oriented to representation and management of knowledge related to future building use and users. The proposed representation model is based on an already accepted ontology-based structure and will make this large amount of knowledge accessible and usable by designers during architectural design processes, in order to enhance the final quality of the design product.

title Local optioneering: Producing complex geometries through opportunistic networking

summary How can small architectural practices participate in contemporary architectural experimentation? One route is through engagement with complex, parametrically controlled geometries. However, the utilisation of such geometries by small practices is comparatively rare. We sought to explore the circumstances of such engagements with the hope of finding what can make them more feasible. To this end, we developed a purpose-specific methodology based on the simulation of an integrated design workflow. To develop and assess this simulation, we exposed a hypothetical project to multiple stakeholders including fabricators, engineers, architects, builders, clients, planning authorities and researchers. The outcomes suggest that the conceptual stance described as optioneering in application to large projects can also be productive at smaller scales.

The companion volume is called Physical Digitality. Together, both volumes contain 154 papers that were submitted to this conference.Physicality means that digital models increasingly incorporate information and knowledge of the world. This extends beyond material and component databases of building materials, but involves time, construction knowledge, material properties, space logic, people behaviour, and so on. Digital models therefore, are as much about our understanding of the world as they are about design support. Physical is no longer the opposite part of digital models. Models and reality are partly digital and partly physical. The implication of this condition is not clear however, and it is necessary to investigate its potential. New strategies are necessary that acknowledge the synergetic qualities of the physical and the digital. This is not limited to our designs but it also influences the process, methods, and what or how we teach.The subdivision of papers in these volumes follow the distinction made in the conference theme. The papers in Digital Physicality have their orientation mainly in the digital realm, and reach towards the physical part. It has to be granted that this distinction is rather crude, because working from two extremes (digital versus physical) tends to ignore the arguably most interesting middle ground.

title The Forbidden Symmetries

summary The emergence of quasi-periodic tiling theories in mathematics and material science is revealing a new class of symmetry, which had never been accessible before. Because of their astounding visual and structural properties, quasi-periodic symmetries can be ideally suited for many applications in art and architecture; providing a rich source of ideas for articulating form, pattern, surface and structure. However, since their discovery, the unique long-range order of quasi-periodic symmetries, is still posing a perplexing puzzle. As rule-based systems, the ability to algorithmically generate these complicated symmetries can be instrumental in understanding and manipulating their geometry. Recently, the discovery of quasi-periodic patterns in ancient Islamic architecture is providing a unique example of how ancient mathematics can inform our understanding of some basic theories in modern science. The recent investigation into these complex and chaotic formations is providing evidence to show that ancient designers, by using the most primitive tools (a compass and a straightedge) were able to resolve the complicated long-range principles of ten-fold quasi-periodic formations. Derived from these ancient principles, this paper presents a computational model for describing the long-range order of octagon-based quasi-periodic formations. The objective of the study is to design an algorithm for constructing large patches of octagon-based quasi-crystalline formations. The proposed algorithm is proven to be successful in producing an infinite and defect-free covering of the two-dimensional plane.

title Architects on architectural film and animation

summary As part of our inquiry about the practice of architectural film and animation and where it might go, this paper presents the results of interviews with architects on space, and on animation. We present their rich sense of space, and explain how they structure architectural film and animation. We found that architects wish to convey the subjective impact of design, but don’t know how to connect film editing techniques to architectural ends. Computational design could fill this gap with, for example, drag-and-drop editing patterns.

title Agent Provocateur - BIM In The Academic Design Studio

summary Building Information Modeling challenges academia to question the fundamental roles of abstraction and simulation in design education. Architectural education and practice assume a traditional set of visual conventions at varied scales and levels of detail, that when taken in concert signifies a whole, complete idea of a building, a correspondence between design intent and interpretation, between the representation of ideas and the design of buildings. BIM viewed as provocateur to these assumptions provides potential critical analysis of how architectural design is taught. Academia must seek out new design methodologies for exploring architecture that reflect the representational shift of BIM by developing teaching methods that reprioritize ways of seeing, thinking and making. This paper describes a studio model that seeks out new active methods for exploring architecture that embrace this shift by developing processes that provoke novel ways to reconcile the traditions of abstraction and the opportunities of synthetic simulation.

summary The problem considered in this paper is: “In what way do we design?” This paper concentrates on the early creative stages of the design process during which the designer gradually gathers the information about the problem, applying appropriate rules, tools and media. If the tools are chosen as a starting point of consideration, designing may be analysed as manual or digital. If we chose the medium - design may be considered as physical or virtual. The main thesis of this paper is that designing proceeds somewhere in between. “Somewhere in between” means the space where manual, digital, virtual are mixing, overlapping, and transforming one into the other. As a case study the process of designing of blurred function object is presented. In this experimental design studio we paid particular attention to the design process and we searched for the answer to the following questions: how to find an idea (what tools/media are helpful), how to express, fi x and transform that idea? In the paper the examples of students’ work will be presented and discussed.

summary The goal of this project is a deeper understanding of the mechanisms that shape a city with a focus on pedestrian flow. Pedestrian flow reveals the use of space, the capacity and use of transportation and has an impact on the health of people. Movement patterns of pedestrians are a topic in many related fields like transportation planning, computer graphics and sociology. This project augments the simulation of pedestrian decision processes by taking into account the preferences for surrounding factors like additional points of interests and how pedestrians interact along their path with other pedestrians in a social manner. The goal of this project is to analyse urban planning configurations and to give designers and decision makers a tool to measure the amount of people walking and therefore define the health of a society, finding places of social interaction and improving social coherence in neighbourhoods.

summary This paper explores the sonic characteristics of urban spaces, with the application of apprehending acoustic space and form theory. The theory defines auditory spaces as acoustical arenas, which are spaces defi ned and delineated by sonic events. Historically, cities were built around a soundmark, for example, the resonance of a church bell or propagation of a calling for prayer, or a factory horn. Anyone living beyond the horizon of this soundmark was not considered citizens of that town. Furthermore, the volume of urban sonic arenas depends on natural. Digital simulation is necessary to visualize the ephemeral and temporal nature of sound, within a dynamic immersive environment like urban spaces. This paper digitally analyses the different morphologies of old cities and forms of growth in relation to the sound propagation and ecological effects. An experiment is conducted with the aid of an ancient North-African city model, exposed to a point cloud agent system. By analysing how the sound propagates from the known soundmark through the urban fabric, with the wind pressure interference; the paper compares the theoretical concept of soundmarks and the known perimeter of the ancient city

summary The present paper describes an integrative design experiment in which different types of models were used in order to achieve a design that compromises aesthetics, lightness, fabrication, assembly and structural performance. It shows how an integrative approach, through the use of both virtual and physical models, can provide valuable feedback in different phases of the design and fabrication process. It was possible to conclude that the design method used allowed solving many problems and had a significant impact in the resulting object.
