summary This paper analyses a hybrid design approach; how physical and digital processes can inform each other in a multivalent design cycle. It describes the design of origami-inspired window shades, part of the Shaping Light project that explores how adjustable surface structures can modulate light levels and heat gain in response to the changing seasons. The screen uses sloped surfaces to diffuse light and create apertures that close when the screen is stretched and open when the screen is folded. The project complements digital methods for pattern proportioning and kinetic simulation with manual manipulation to generate 3D folding motifs and refi ne assemblies. Physical prototypes can shape digital refi nement by revealing visual and structural characteristics of materials, along with joint and production considerations. Physical models for simulating sunny and cloudy daylighting conditions provide a direct connection between spatial confi guration and visual effects. The paper concludes with guidelines for material-based digital-analog creation.

title Automation at scale: Geometry, analysis and post processing

summary Our team is currently engaged in the peer review of a large steel stadium dome roof. The roof has a diameter of approximately 300m and rises to over 70m in elevation. In addition to its size, the roof also contains a moveable component which can be deployed during inclement weather. The roof structure comprises of approximately 32,000 beams with 10,000 nodes. This paper overviews our efforts in scaling digital design techniques with regards to automation and parametric geometry to expedite the verification of structural members and geometrically complicated connection nodes. The paper will discuss two realms where automation was deployed. The first realm is the verification of Type 1 node connections where less than eight members intersect at a single work point and is relatively geometrically simple. Type 1 nodes were checked against published code requirements. Type 2 connections consisted of nodes where more than eight members intersected or bracing angles did not meet code guidelines. Type 2 nodes were verified using the finite element method and large scale automation of node geometry creation to structural analysis post processing was employed.

summary This paper presents a general 3D shape grammar interpreter named GRAMATICA and illustrates its use for the implementation of several shape grammars, including the one used in the design module of a specifi c shape grammar for mass-customized housing, called DESIGNA. The underlying shape representation, generation and control are discussed. The resulting shape grammar interpreter tries to support designers’ ways of thinking and working by acting as a bridge between shape grammars, the formalism that captures a design process, and a CAD application, for post-processing the computed design. This bridge is implemented by Rosetta, which ensures portability among different CAD applications.

If architects and designers can develop methods to translate existing textile structures and behaviors, then architects and designers can harness the vast extant knowledge base that goes into the design and fabrication of geometric textile structures and resultant behaviors to develop new materials and tools to construct active building systems that use the pliability of textiles to advantage.

If architects, designers and scientists developing textile technologies for buildings, clothing or other objects can begin to understand and digitally construct different categories of textile structures, as well as understand how the behavior of that textile relates to its structure, then they can better understand how to design form active systems, or structures that are able to move when required.

summary With the invention of computers, Architecture and other Engineering disciplines have undergone revolutionary developments offering new opportunities for improving efficiency and opening new frontiers for creativity. For example in architecture and urban planning, the discussions have been extended from conventional writings to cover cyberspace, virtual architecture and digital city. Moreover, computers have helped in the realization of many complex projects that would be inconceivable with traditional drawing techniques. This is clearly demonstrated in the works of Frank Gehry's, Zaha Hadid, Daniel Libeskind and many others. In deed, digital techniques have changed the design creative process and how the architects think. Traditionally the structured development architectural ideas from 2D drawings (plans, sections, elevations) towards 3D resolution has been replaced by more interactive approach of 2D & 3D. The changes that digital techniques have brought to the field of Architecture; including practice and education, can obviously be viewed from different angles and incite many discussions and questions. However, the purpose of this presentation is to discuss the role of digital techniques within the overall framework of project management in Gulf Housing Engineering. It starts the discussion with a brief on architecture and digital techniques in the Gulf Region, especially during the “boom period”; a period characterized by rapid production of buildings relying heavily on virtual images. It is against this background, the role of digital techniques is evaluated from a practice point of view. In fact in GHE, digital means are integral parts of the holistic project delivery process starting form initiation, to various design stages to construction ending with project completion. In this process emphasis is paid to the inter-relationships between IT Systems and Quality Control which in turn facilitate measuring, monitoring and reporting on various managerial, technical and design and budgetary aspects of the project. The presentation is supported by real case studies of GHE portfolio. It emphasizes that digital techniques should be an integral part of an overall process and should be seen as means to enhance efficiency and creativity; and should contribute to the betterment of the built environment

summary The Emergent Reefs project thrives on the potential that emerge from a coherent utilization of the environment’s inherent ecological structure for its own transformation and evolution, using an approach based on digitally simulated ecosystems and sparkled by the possibilities and potential of large-scale 3D printing technology. Considering tourism as an inevitable vector of environmental change, the project aims to direct its potential and economic resources towards a positive transformation, providing a material substrate for the human-marine ecosystem integration with the realization of spaces for an underwater sculpture exhibition. Such structures will also provide a pattern of cavities which, expanding the gradient of microenvironmental conditions, break the existing homogeneity in favor of systemic heterogeneity, providing the spatial and material preconditions for the repopulation of marine biodiversity. Starting from a digital simulation of a synthetic local ecosystem, a generative technique based on multi-agent systems and continuous cellular automata (put into practice from the theoretical premises in Alan Turing’s paper “The Chemical basis of Morphogenesis” through reaction-diffusion simulation) is implemented in a voxel field at several scales giving the project a twofold quality: the implementation of reaction diffusion generative strategy within a non-isotropic 3-dimensional field and integration with the large-scale 3D printing fabrication system patented by D-Shape®. Out of these assumptions and in the intent of exploiting the expressive and tectonic potential of such technology, the project has been tackled exploring voxel-based generative strategies. Working with a discrete lattice eases the simulation of complex systems and processes across multiple scales (including non-linear simulations such as Computational Fluid-Dynamics) starting from local interactions using, for instance, algorithms based on cellular automata, which then can be translated directly to the physical production system. The purpose of Emergent-Reefs is to establish, through strategies based on computational design tools and machine-based fabrication, seamless relationships between three different aspects of the architectural process: generation, simulation and construction, which in the case of the used technology can be specified as guided growth.

summary The paper reports on the observation of how students can be supported in urban design learning through the use of an experimental collective memory enhanced virtual city - Virtual Jalan Malioboro. This study focuses on how instances of people’s collective memory of the Malioboro Street could be digitally represented and connected with the 3D models of buildings and places of the street. An evaluative study was conducted in a real university educational setting to test how it can support urban design learning. The results show that by enhancing 3D models with collective memory, students are facilitated to become more engaged with the urban site and knowledgeable of historical contextual issues.

summary In the fabrication of organic free-form shapes in architecture one is constantly faced with specifi c planning and design challenges. This paper examines these problems as well as possible solutions for the design of a completed and built prototype using the example of an organically shaped pavilion made of glass fi bre reinforced plastic modules. The paper describes which adjustments to the original design were required to take the step from “digital physicality” to “physical digitality” to realize a constructive and economically successful implementation. The solutions discussed combine modern digital software methods such as parametric design with innovative 3D modelling principles.

summary The aim of this paper is to report the teaching experience held in 2012 at Unicamp between three disciplines of representation. Students analyzed emblematic residences from digital and physical models. Digital models were produced in Revit and its building components were diagrammed in AutoCad. After that, these elements were sent to laser cutter, and hand assembled. In 3DS Max, 3D model allowed simulations such as rendered images and animations. We report the contributions of these analog and digital artifacts in the design process. This article contributes to reflection and debate on the application of digital technologies in the analysis of iconic buildings of architecture.

summary This paper treats the technology to generate point clouds from photographs, more known as Dense Stereo Matching (DSM) or Structure from Motion (SfM), among other terminologies. The article presents the concepts, basic principles and architectural survey phases with DSM: planning, data acquisition, processing and post-processing to obtain other products from point cloud data. Then, we present several existing software for DSM, classified in three categories: web-based tools, free software/opensource and commercial software. Finally, we discuss the potentialities of this new technologies for architectural documentation and compare DSM with 3D laser scanning.

summary Our work is to enable partners of a construction project (building owner, architect, engineer, etc.) to share all the technical data produced and manipulated during the building process, by setting up interfaces for an accessible information system via the internet. Our system would be able to deliver an answer to a user to a particular question asked. The system links databases and allows building partners to access and to manipulate specific information. This paper covers the information structure model based on building construction knowledge and the access to user-relevant information. First, the paper aims to establish the state of the art of the information systems available today in the building construction field. Second, we present the contribution of our research to the description of the building elements (foundations, ramps, stairs, etc.), where information is share by partners who are distant from one another and focused on fields of expertise that are distinct but concurrent. Our system links distributed databases and provides an updated building representation that is being enriched and refined all along the building life cycle. It consists of 3D representations of the building as well as data that are associated with each graphical entity (walls, slabs, beams, etc.).

title Augmenting Architecture Through Desktop Manufacturing

summary Personal desktop manufacturing, with its roots in hacker culture, is on the cusp of exploding into the main stream due to the advent of affordable personal 3D printers.This paper is an exploration of these advances in desktop manufacturing technology and their impact on our relationship with products and the built environment.The paper draws parallels to the personal computing and desktop publishing revolutions that offer clues to the future of personal desktop manufacturing. Four major themes have emerged from this exploration: Personal empowerment, remote printing and collaboration, full-scale digital construction, and, most intriguingly, architectural prosthetics. Based on an open-source philosophy and creative commons licensing, desktop manufacturing is redefining our relationship with large manufacturers and is beginning to convert us back from a consumerist culture into a creator one.

title 3D urban space information system: A preliminary prototype based on Google Earth plugin

summary 2D GIS has shown its limitations in many situations, especially when it’s applied in urban design. Many studies have been carried out to deal with the problem. Some attempted to link 3D visualisation to data stored within 2D GIS, and others tried to combine GIS, CAD and visualisation together. They all aim to meliorate current GIS for 3D applications. The authors of this paper developed a preliminary prototype of a 3D urban space information system based on Google Earth Plugin. It sets up a server to store and offer specific urban space information. With the desktop application that embeds Google Earth Plugin, user can upload and download models on the server, view them in the virtual 3D environment of Google earth, and make models directly in the 3D environment. A server-side database plays the role of managing information. This paper introduces the key ideas and methods of the system development, including system structure, set-up of the serve, server side information management, and interactive modelling functions.

title Real-time rendering of large building information models: Current state vs. state-of-the-art

summary With the use of Building Information Models (BIM), real-time 3D visualisations have become a natural tool in order to communicate ideas and share information between all involved parties in a project. Currently, several different BIM viewers are available for the purpose of interactive presentations and design reviews. However, as BIMs become larger and more detailed, it provides a challenge for available software solutions to manage them interactively. In this paper we present our findings from analysing three commonly used BIM viewers - Tekla BIMSight, Autodesk Navisworks and Solibri Model Viewer - in terms of real-time rendering performance. In addition we have developed a prototype BIM viewer to test modern approaches for efficient real-time rendering. Specifically, we have implemented the latest version of the Coherent Hierarchical Culling algorithm. Our results show that existing BIM viewers all share limitations in their ability to handle large and complex BIMs interactively. However, for the same test models, our prototype BIM viewer enables smooth real-time performance with no visual artefacts. The results from our tests thus shows that the technology to enable correct real-time rendering of large and complex BIMs is already accessible, but are currently not utilised by any of the tested BIM viewers.

summary This article is a starting point for the development of experiential urban co-design interfaces to enhance public participation in local urban projects and to be also used as a communication and collaboration tool in urban design. It is based on the previous research involving 3D city models utilized as understandable design interfaces for the non-technical public (Jutraz, Zupancic, 2011), where we have already explored different views (pedestrian, intermediate and bird’s-eye view), as well as the means by which the information obtained from these different views may be combined by shifting between viewpoints. Previous work was conducted in the “street lab” as well as the Urban Experimental Lab, which was developed specifi cally for the public’s participation in urban planning (Voigt, Kieferle, Wössner, 2009). Presented in this article is the next step that explores the immersive collaboration environment 3D ICC [1], formerly known as Teleplace. The environment was developed for effi cient collaboration and remote communication and shifts the research focus towards questions regarding how to employ both labs as interfaces between the non-technical public and design professionals. As we are facing the lack of digital systems for public participation and education in urban design, different digital tools for communication and collaboration should be combined into a new holistic platform for design. A digital system of tools needs to be developed that supports the urban design decision-making process and focuses on improved final solutions and increased satisfaction amongst all participants. In this article the system of digital tools for public participation, which include communication, collaboration and education, will be also defi ned, with its basic characteristics and its elements.

title Building Thailand's tallest Ganesh: CAD/CAM integration in conventional metal fabrication

summary Ganesh (Ganesa or Ganesha) is a Hindi god well known for his distinguishable elephant head and widely revered as the god of success or remover of obstacles. Patrons in Thailand have worshipped Ganesh and respected him by means of erecting statues of Ganesh in various poses and sizes throughout the country. In late 2008, the people of Chacheongsao, a province located East of Bangkok, decided to create Thailand’s tallest standing Ganesh statue made with bronze reaching heights up to 39 meters and situated on the Bangpakong river bank overseeing the city and its people. The author and design team was approached by representatives from Chacheongsao and commissioned to advise the process from conception to construction. The challenge started with seeking appropriate computer-aided design and manufacturing technologies and innovative processes to guide the design team throughout the production. The 0.60-meter bronze cast sculpture of the Ganesh was scanned using a 3D optical scanner to generate a solid model of the statue. A surface model was then extracted from the 3D model to firstly determine the most efficient structural support within the statue and secondly to generate surface strips for the foundry to create actual bronze casts. The construction of the project began early 2009 and the statue has since been erected from its base to currently its head. During construction, the author and design team has encountered several problems translating pixels to parts. Several errors have occurred during the mould and cast production process as well as construction errors on site causing mismatches of the structure and surface, misalignments, and protruding structural supports and joints. The lessons learned from this project is documented and analysed with hopes to create a more effective process for future projects with similar requirements.

summary This paper presents the results of an exploratory study developed with the Autodesk Project Vasari and AutoCAD Civil 3D. Project Vasari was used to evaluate the environmental performance of a low-income housing project. It shows us that the actual site orientation of the project presents poor environmental performance, which could be improved by rotating building in 90 degrees. The AutoCAD Civil 3D was used to evaluate how that rotation should impact on earthmoving. The results showed that the simulations developed, even though having low level of accuracy, provide sufficiently clear information to support decision making on conceptual mass project stage.

summary This article reflects on the ethical implications of digital technology (DT) in architectonic design. Such a reflection is based on the definition of complex epistemology and the educational ethical reform (Morin 2000). The article ends with a conceptual proposal of an interactive, multidimensional and collaborative environment of design. The goal is to re-set patterns and strategies of design with DT from plural perspectives and poly-temporal creations, all of it inserted in a complex ethical point of view of a contemporary design. The wanted result is a social 3d network of design that unifies visualization, modeling tools, videoconferencing, chatting, and social-academic network managing.

summary With the growing demand for mock-up integration into late design and pre-construction phases, there is an increasing gap between the virtual design model of the building and the construction model. The gap is reinforced by lack of strong iterative exchanges between design and fabrication and consequently the construction of the building skin systems. This paper will discuss the research being conducted using virtual mock-ups as an earlier insertion of fabrication parameters into design process and presents a solution to bridge this gap. Studies of model integration will be introduced using component-based 3D-CAD modeling to link front and end user scenarios.
