summary The premise of this paper addresses the limited shared vocabulary of landscape architecture and architectural design - evident in the application of terms such as ‘spatial design’ and ‘spatial planning’. In their current usage, such terms emphasize the visible, terrestrial, pedestrian perspective level, often to the absolute exclusion of a spatial, ie. volumetric, comprehension of the environment. This deficit is acutely evident in the education of Landscape Architecture and Architecture, and discussion of their shared ground. The dominant document to map such analysis and design is the plan, or 3d-dimensional representations of the same, restricted to an extrusion or height map. GIS techniques in spatial design tend to be weighted towards visual, surface based data (slope analysis, exposure, viewshed etc.). Our goal within this domain lies in transforming aspects of the intangible - the characteristics of open space itself - into a form that is legible, quantifiable, and malleable.

title Directed Deposition: Exploring the Roles of Simulation and Design in Erosion and Landslide Processes

summary Working with and against environmental processes, such as the movement of water, earth, and rock, and terrain, has been a perpetual challenge since the dawn of civilisation. While it has been possible to gradually tame many landscapes to perform in a predictable manner, there are many circumstances where we are forced to live with and around such processes in everyday life. This research is primarily interested in the potential of design to interact with such processes. Specifically, we are interested in the designed redirection of erosion and landslide processes already observable in nature, taking the urbanised hillsides of the Alps as test case scenario. The research specialisation continues a research and design focus specialised on processes material deposition of river and flood systems, further down the water catchment chain (REF: ANON 2012). This specific alpine research is compelling in the context of Anthropocene processes, we are specifically focussed in the appraisal, harnessing and redirection of existing environmental phenomena, given what can be understood as our inevitable interaction with these processes (Sijmons 2015). Within this broader research, which has ecological, cultural, and formal potential, this paper shall explore the practical aspects of connecting design, and the designer, with the potential for understanding and designing these evolving mountain landscapes. There is a long history behind the development of landscape elements which control avalanches, mud, rock, and landslides. The cultural, functional and aesthetic role of such elements in the landscape is relatively undiscussed, epitomising an approach that is primarily pragmatic in both engineering and expense. It is perhaps no surprise that these elements have a dominant physical and visual presence in the contemporary landscape. Through the investigation of synergies with other systems, interests, and design potential for such landscape elements, it is proposed that new potential can be found in their implementation. This research proposes that the intuitive linking of common design software to direct landslide simulation, design of and cultural use can interact with these natural processes. This paper shall demonstrate methods to within which design can enter the process of landscape management, linking the modelling processes of the landscape designer with the simulation capabilities of the specialised engineer.

title Generation and Integration of an Aerodynamic Performance Data Base Within the Concept Design Phase of Tall Buildings

summary Despite the fact that tall buildings are the most wind affected architectural typology, testing for aerodynamic performance is conducted during the later design phases well after the overall geometry has been developed. In this context, aerodynamic performance studies are limited to evaluating an existing design rather than a systematic performance study of design options driving form generation. Beyond constrains of time and cost of wind tunnel testing, which is still more reliable than Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations for wind conditions around buildings, aerodynamic performance criteria lack an immediate interface with parametric design tools. This study details a framework for empirical data collection through wind tunnel testing of building mechatronic models and the expansion of the collected dataset by determining a mathematical interpolating model using an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) algorithm developing an Aerodynamic Performance Data Base (APDB). Frederick Keisler called the interacting of forces CO-REALITY, which he defined as The Science of Relationships. In the same article Keisler proclaims that the Form Follows Function is an outmoded understanding that design must demonstrate continuous variability in response to interactions of competing forces. This topographic space is both constant and fleeting where form is developed through the broadcasting of conflict and divergence as a system seeks balance and where one state of matter is passing by another; a decidedly fluid system. However, in spite of the fact that most of our environment consists of fluids or fluid reactions, instantaneous and geologic, natural and engineered, we have restricted ourselves to approaching the design of buildings and their interactions with the environment through solids, their properties and geometry; flow is considered well after the concept design stage and as validation of form. The research described herein explores alternative relations between the object and the flows around it as an iterative process, moving away from the traditional approach of Form Follows Function to Form Follows Flow.

summary This paper discusses a methodology for generating architectural form parametrically from structural logics such that an architectural vocabulary can be generated for use in design. It intends to further the discussion of how parametrics can play a role in architectural design. Parametric applications are facilitating the use of engineering design feedback into the architectural process, allowing architects to ‘tune’ their designs. In this case, structural form is discussed. The nature of parametrics makes the use of structural principles relatively simple because they are already in the numeric form of equations. As well, parametrics make the generation of alternatives easy because of the iterative nature of the tool. As such, including the basis of structural principles in the logic of the parametrics allows the design to function performatively in both an architectural and a structural sense.

summary Stereotomy originated as a technique that accumulated theoretical and practical knowledge on stone material properties and construction. At its peak in the nineteenth century, by pushing the structure and construction limits, it gained the ability of using "the weight of the stone against itself by making it hover in space through the very weight that should make it fall down" (Perrault 1964, cited Etelin, 2012). The modern architectural tectonics, based on structural comprehension in architecture, found no value in stereotomy beyond its early, Gothic period. Similarly, digital architectural theory recognized in Gothic the early examples of a material systems. This paper reassesses stereotomy at its fundamental levels, as a material system based on generative processes that assimilate structure and construction through parameterization. In this way, a theoretical framework is established that exposes stereotomy's intrinsic potentials: the continuity of historic and contemporary examples, overlaps between current research endeavours, and its genuine relevance for contemporary digital architecture.

summary Integration of analyses into early design phases poses several challenges. An experimental implementation of an analysis framework in conjunction with an optimization framework ties authoring and analysis tools together under one umbrella. As a prototype it served intensive use-testing in the context of the SmartGeometry 2012 workshop in Troy, NY. In this prototype the data flow uses a mix of proprietary and publicised file formats, exchanged through publicly accessible interfaces. The analysis framework brokers between the parametric authoring tool and the analysis tools. The optimization framework controls the processes between the authoring tool and parametric engine on one side and the optimization algorithm on the other. In addition to some user-implemented analyses inside the parametric design model the prototype makes energy analysis and structural analysis available. The prototype allows testing assumptions about work flow, implementation, usability and general feasibility of the pursued approach.

summary This paper describes two case studies in which digital media and morphology are closely related. The first one refers to the evolution of the different instruments applied in a research area comprising spatial surfaces generated by double rotation. The second one deals from the start with laser cutting, and its possibilities of providing flexibility to rigid sheets through density and shape of the incisions. It presents the latest results in the development of joint design for this kind of products. Finally, the current trends in our research are briefly mentioned.

summary This paper presents a pilot project, using mobile devices in a History of Art and Architecture classroom to enhance instructor-student classroom interactions and student learning. At our Faculty of Architecture this particular class has a usual high failure rate (26% F in 2012). It is a compulsory course for architecture students, some of them are required to take this course twice or more before they can graduate. Traditional learning is lecture-based, and students studying toward their tests are often overloaded with information. In June 2013, Rangsit University initiated a new policy to provide tablets to every freshmen; around 7,200 tablets were distributed campus-wide (Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 with S-pen). Toward the end of the class, the students were asked to complete a questionnaire in order to find out what they think about mobile learning. Typically, students are quite satisfied, and give positive feedback in their comments. The experience gained from this pilot project will be extended to other classes.

summary An enduring consideration within architectural discourse, the notion of performance is intrinsically embedded within design. Over the past several years, architecture has been increasingly attentive to the framework of performance and its potential contributions to contemporary issues within the field. Numerous derivatives of the word perform—for example performance, performative, performalism, performalist—have been applied to architectural contexts within several significant publications providing evidence of the mounting interest of researchers, academics, and theorists to this premise. Within his essay “Architecture as Performative Art,” architect and historian Antoine Picon remarks, “From its Renaissance origins, architecture inherited a concern with effectiveness that other arts did not possess,” (Grobman and Neuman 2012) while also emphasizing that current inquiry into performative criteria within the profession instigates even broader aspirations. Contemporary research surrounding performance in architecture articulates mediated aspirations that negotiate between quantitative and qualitative measures.

While current attempts to integrate social communication, technology with built environments are nominally effective; Architectural Sociability is proposed as an effective design solution. Strategy details include a purpose based social approach in which social networks, localized data streams, ubiquitous computing, pervasive networks, and smart environments are considered a traditional part of an architectural structure.

summary This paper aims to describe part of a study about the visualization of architectural designs through digital interactive environments generated with gaming technology. Thus, this text reports the analyses concerning the geometrical modeling procedures of an architectural environment specifically for this usage. The experiment consisted in using a modeling software to create one object using several different techniques, to analyze the number of polygons, the behavior of the surface normals, the stability of the geometries and collision behavior for each one of the objects, in the digital environment.

summary In this paper, we will discuss the potentials of affordable Geoweb 2.0 technologies. We will reveal two affordable open-source collaborative mapping frameworks and explore their potentials, strengths and weaknesses through two different field implementations in the form of case studies. Refl ecting on our experiences with these cases we will compare the two technological frameworks in terms of participation and mapping support as well as data security, cross-browser compatibility, interface customizability, import-export capability and required level of expertise for setup and management. Moreover, with a designerly lens, we will discuss the levels of design empowerment in two cases in relation with user profi les and pre-designated contribution styles. Finally, we will identify open challenges and suggest future directions.

title Cellular Robotic Architecture

summary An emerging need for interactive architecture is currently making buildings mutable, flexible in use, and adaptable to changes in climate by introducing robotic systems. However, the feasibility of the seamless integration of building construction details and kinetic robotics has become a critical issue for developing robotic architecture. The objective of this work is to develop a robotic architecture with an emphasis on the integration of cellular robotics with a distributed kinetic building surface. The kinetic building surface integrates an actuating system, a localization and remote control system, which become part of the kinetic building system. This paper presents a systematic framework by reviewing theories and related work of robotic architecture and automated control. An architectural design scheme is proposed to simulate a scenario of application in a physical space. The functionality of the electrical and control system and the integration of the effects of actual construction were examined by a prototype of a kinetic surface. Our prototype presents a feasible construction method, and a prominent energy-saving effect. The potential strength and restrictions of the cellular robotic approach to architectural applications are discussed. The applicability of the prototype system and issues about controlling the behavior of spatial robots are demonstrated in this paper.

summary This paper introduces EnViz, a software prototype for the visualization of environmental data collected from post-occupancy evaluation surveys. The piece begins by introducing the rationale for the software, and why the authors believe it can be a valuable aid for environmental building design. The development methodology is described and the basic operability and interface are presented. A case study is introduced, and the results from the application of the software on the data from it are presented with accompanying images. Further results are presented, from the use of the software in workshops with undergraduate and post-graduate students, as well as researchers and professionals. Finally, future directions of the software development and the potential of the software are given.

summary This paper presents a distributed and blended model for a virtual design studio and demonstrates the application of the model in a real-life case study. An empirical survey revealed that the proposed model was well-accepted by the current generation of architectural students. The complementary use of the tools with different representational capabilities and synchronization modes enabled effective learning processes. The study also suggested that characteristics of architectural education might entail customization in online and blended learning in several ways.

summary This paper will demonstrate two effective facade rationalisation patterns developed at Gehry Technologies for mitigating the tradeoffs between project constructability constraints vs. project aesthetic constraints. The two Case-Studies will present, fi rstly a method for dealing with large amounts of component instantiations and second with the economical delivery of complex project geometry through panelling. Both projects use design technology as a strategy for the integration of specialized knowledge and trades, through an effective use of information technology. The Case Studies will present the development of the Gridshell Digital Mock-Up of the Yas Island Marina Hotel in Abu Dhabi designed by Asymptote Architects and secondly the Museo Soumaya facade system in Mexico City designed by Fernando Romero LAR. This document will report the development process for obtaining relevant construction information, essential for the assembly of the facade systems by a third-party sub-contractor in support of the facade system coordination. The report concludes on the implementations of bespoke tools in support of the coordination and geometry description tasks. The tailored tool making process extends the parametric modelling system Digital Project™ in the design support role of obtaining aesthetically pleasing decompositions of the buildings Master Design Surface MDS into feasible constructible components.

The strategy outlined was developed as the result of the digital building delivery of the Museo Soumaya façade in Mexico City designed by Fernando Romero LAR. This report documents the development process of a method for obtaining relevant construction information flows enabling the assembly of the façade system by a third-party sub-contractor in support of the façade system coordination. This report concludes on a method using bespoke software for extending the parametric modelling system Digital Project™ in the design support role of obtaining an aesthetically pleasing arrangement of flat hexagonal panels over a freeform surface.

summary This proposed paper presents the results of a real world demo of adaptive urban lighting in a pedestrian oriented street in the core centre of a northern city of 65°01’ latitude, Oulu, Finland. The case project – LightStories (Valotarina) – explores the methods to enable city dwellers to participate in the design of public urban lighting, as well as interaction and communication through urban lighting. It applies a web-based design tool which offers city dwellers the possibility to design one hour long light animations to be displayed along a pedestrian oriented street. In addition to describing the design and development process of the lighting system and the participatory design tools used in this case, the paper presents general discussion about the process and tools, and also about the role of algorithm aided methods in enabling the user participation in lighting design with the tool.

summary We present an evaluation model to analyze ambient information systems, based on attentional mechanisms. Taking Weiser and Brown (1996) concepts of Ubiquitous Computing and Calm Technology as a starting point, we delimit ambient information systems as those that can be monitored without requiring the focus of our attention. Using the theoretical framework from Cognitive Psychology, we propose an evaluation model to analyze ambient information systems, considering the attentional mechanisms involved in their use. As a conclusion, we outline a set of parameters to be considered during the design of ambient information systems.
