summary This paper presents a practical experience developed within the framework of a network of researchers dedicated to develop projects of technology transfer, training and research in the field of innovation, involving virtual reality, augmented reality and advanced interaction. The group develops visualization oriented technologies and aim to socialize the experiences developed. In this sense was created an Electronic Guide to cultural routes in southern Brazil, exploiting the contemporary concept of ubiquitous tourism, in which users access tourism content with mobile devices, using sensitivity to context, semantic web and advanced visualization, thus rescuing the memory and regional architectural heritage.

title Understanding and Managing the Constructive Characteristics of Vernacular Architecture

summary In this paper a methodology will be presented to investigate and document the constructive characteristics of two raw earth houses: artifacts that belong to the vernacular architecture. The comprehension, analysis and documentation of these architectures presents several problems mainly linked to the impossibility of using a predefined method, because the difficulties relating to each artifact and its characteristics, to particular geographic, cultural and social situations, are unique. To understand and document the constructive features it was decided to realize a three-dimensional digital reconstruction of the two artifacts, using 3D modeling software. Subsequently several graphic works have been elaborated (technological breakdown, sheets with detailed information about the materials, used constructive techniques, etc), useful in managing a recovery or maintenance project.

summary This article presents the formal results obtained from the same project, defined at the initial stage, modeled in three different CAD systems, exported and prototyped in two different types of three-dimensional printer. These digital systems have varying degrees of precision, can result in rapid prototyping different from the original virtual model, and this could frustrate the user's initial expectations, due to the need of modeling rework. The proper use of these tools can be helpful, since the beginning of the design process, with quick and reliable information, regarding the formal intent of the architect.

summary During the creative process, designers constantly evaluate the relations between objects in space. BIM aids this process by providing a modeling platform where objects are embedded with information, which can be extracted on demand. The object Interaction Query (oIQ) proposes a novel way to query BIM models, not only for geometric properties and dimensions, but also about the relations among the components. By including the queried objects’ context and interrelations as part of the computation, the prototype tool is able to provide feedback on complex interactions and conflicts in the design environment. The oIQ approach and its implementation are developed as integral parts of the design process, allowing users to perform customized queries through a GUI in which users can apply their knowledge and design preferences to the model’s evaluation.

title The Role of the Record and the Paradox of the Original

summary Earthquakes have progressively destroyed the Chilean built heritage over the years, not only due to the initial devastation they produce, but also as a result of the applied reconstruction approaches that follow. The design of reconstruction projects has usually aimed to re-establish the previous built form of historic buildings; generating new ‘heritage’ constructions that try to imitate only the appearance of previous ones rather than understanding that heritage, in the case studied, includes a sustainable mode of construction. This issue occurs in places where previous records are sometimes non-existent, which poses the question of authenticity. Considering the regularity of earthquakes in Chile, the role of accurate recording technologies, such as 3D laser scanning, becomes relevant. Their implications for new and existing architectures in the re-construction process include being a virtual database for demolition, retrofitting, intervention or replica. This paper examines the survey of the church of San Lorenzo de Tarapacá obtained in January 2013, and discusses how this, in conjunction with previous records, might impact on what is considered heritage and the design of future reconstructions.

summary The aim of this paper is to discuss the role three-dimensional models play in addressing performance issues in virtual reconstructions of the heritage buildings. The author aims to analyse the process of digital reconstruction of heritage buildings and the impact of the decisions taken during its development on the final performance. Based on the examples drawn from practice, various stages of development are discussed, confronted with the principles of London Charter.

summary This paper outlines a custom-built suite of scripts that automate the processes of reinforced concrete design and is directly linked to the parametric design model of the architect. The workflow creates a design and engineering feedback loop for early phase schematic design. Using this system, the design geometry is generated and then deconstructed into a Finite Element model. The workflow executes a static analysis then calculates rebar size and placement, and finally generates fabrication drawings. This methodology allows architectural intent and engineering analysis to be collapsed into a single non-linear design process.

summary This paper presents a system for design and construction of a parametrically designed, structural shell for remote communities. It explains how, through the use of various digital software platforms, a single-layer, structural shell is designed and optimized and subsequently how a series of customized joints can be output for direct digital fabrication. As the customization is focused primary in the joints of the structure, standard dimension, locally sourced structural members can be used. By embedding assembly information onto the physical joints, the system has the capacity to simplify the construction of complex shell structures by workers with basic construction skills. Flat-packed joints can be shipped to remote sites without heavy structural members thereby reducing transportation costs and the overall embodied energy. By lowering cost and simplifying construction of large span structures, the project is intended to extend the benefits of digitally driven design to rural, remote or under-privileged communities.

summary This paper proposes a design method for the exploration of holistic low exergy design strategies which factor in limitations and constraints of both passive and active systems. A design method that consists of a two loop structure is proposed. The inner loop consists of an automated workflow that includes three main components: a developmental procedure for generating design variants; evaluation procedures for evaluating design variants; and an optimisation procedure for optimising populations of design variants. The outer loop consists of a manual workflow that has two main components: a schema formulation process for defining the inputs to the automated workflow and a data analysis process for analysing the data produced by the automated workflow. A case study is presented that demonstrates the proposed method.

summary The paper describes the development of a set of smart BIM components to facilitate and accelerate the creation of large-scale urban models in the early design phase in a BIM software environment. The components leverage the analytical, parametric and modelling capabilities of the BIM environment to support adaptive parameter-driven building geometry, patterning of different building types, early numerical and graphical design evaluation, various simulation methods and the exploration of design alternatives. The toolset consists of the most common building shapes, but can be extended with additional shapes and their respective area and volumetric calculations when necessary. The rapid large-scale deployment of the components has been achieved by diverting existing tools from their intended use.

summary Daylight is a crucial element for indoor environment quality. Office buildings commonly use fully glazed façades to reflect a luxurious appearance and to maximize natural light at the expenses of high energy consumption due to cooling/heating. Double-skin façades are one of the solutions that improve the building efficiency while maintaining good natural lighting. This paper studies the impact of various perforated outer skins for non-sealed double-skin facades on light quality in prototypical office space in Egypt using parametric design. A traditional solution for light such as the Mashrabiya is taken as an inspiration for this study to generate different forms of perforated screens. The cases were analysed using light simulation tool and sorted by a genetic algorithm to show best 30 solutions offered by the design criteria. A methodology to achieve these objectives was suggested in this paper to reach better light quality in indoor spaces.

The second part of this paper focuses on the investigation of the potential of the proposed method in design process. It was evaluated in educational design case study. title FluidScape: Research in Parametric Concrete Formwork

summary Given the piecemeal nature of concrete formwork, the phenomenon of the monolithic result relies on elegant detailing, material choice, and formal continuity. Creating complex form out of concrete poses an intriguing problem, where these disparate constructive elements must be dynamic and flexible. This paper describes the design process from conception to prototyping for a public spray park competition project. The challenges inherent in the proposed forms included subtle reveals and ledges for water to flow down. Achieving the desired finish for the concrete requires a precise, digitally-generated form, particular materials and fabrication sequence. The project design and fabrication gives parametric control to Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) fabrication tools for an output of fluid form.

summary Designers interested in applying evo-devo-design methods for performance based multi-objective design exploration have typically faced two main hurdles: it’s too hard and too slow. An evo-devo-design method is proposed that effectively overcomes the hurdles of skill and speed by leveraging two key technologies: computational workflows and cloud computing. In order to tackle the skills hurdle, Workflow Systems are used that allow users to define computational workflows using visual programming techniques. In order to tackle the speed hurdle, cloud computing infrastructures are used in order to allow the evolutionary process to be parallelized. We refer to the proposed method as Evo-Devo In The Sky (EDITS). This paper gives an overview of both the EDITS method and the implementation of a software environment supporting the EDITS method. Finally, a case-study is presented of the application of the EDITS method.

summary The paper describes the development, testing, and initial findings of a design tool that generates parametrically defined, semi-automatically analyzed, and visualized structural performance of specific truss designs. The prototypical design tool provides structural truss solutions for spans of uniform to non-uniform surface curvatures. Real-time visual structural performance feedback enables the designer to more rapidly develop viable and potentially more efficient designs under user defined load conditions. The research methodology is an example of reinforcing structural learning and intuition within the design process. The research presents findings of the impact of iterative and interactive structural feedback through the development of a parametrically integrated structural truss analysis tool for aiding in design decision support.
