summary Innovative design approaches are needed for mass housing implementations. Especially increasing interaction between user and designer is major important in the design decisions of these buildings. For this, it is seriously necessary to benefit from technological advances in computational designs, because digital tools like shape grammar, cellular automata, genetic algorithm, l-systems and agent-based models in this field provide not only to save time and to manage the relationships but also to generate many different alternatives. Accordingly, a digital support tool for designers has been developed by using cellular automata approach and scripts of 3Ds Max software. It produces samples of housing design plans which is generated by cellular automata approach according to the data of users' preferences. In this paper the interface and contributions of the developed model are introduced and discussed.

summary According to Hod Lipson at Cornell University’s Creative Machines Lab, cloud manufacturing ‘consists of a network of smallscale, decentralized nodes of production.’ It is a novel production approach relative to centralized mass production and standardisation methods common to today’s industrial processes. To date, cloud manufacturing techniques have focused largely on the production of smallscale consumer goods that integrate digital fabrication techniques, the most popular being 3D-printing technology. With advances in network-based design platforms for 3D-printing services in combination with the global installation of fabrication laboratories (fab lab), the production of architectural building components using cloud manufacturing techniques is now possible. This paper will define how cloud manufacturing techniques can be expanded into the realm of architectural practice and, in particular, how such techniques can be applied to larger-scale building and construction components. The paper will further discuss how such novel additive manufacturing (AM) processes applied to construction can potentially revolutionize architectural design by generating a new collaborative design model that facilitates local production of customized and readily assembled building components on demand.

title An Inquiry into Designing in Context using Generative Systems

summary The use of generative systems has been widely investigated in the architectural design process through different procedures and levels of autonomy to generate form.The digression from abstract pre- existing notions of vocabulary and rules – even when resulting in emergent forms – to address complex real- world contexts is yet a challenging undertaking.This paper explores incorporating context in the process of designing using generative systems from ideation to fabrication, and explores the relationship between the emergent nature of generative design and the situated act of designing while using generative design tools.A course offered for 3rd year architecture students at the Department of Architecture, Ain Shams University, Egypt, was designed for this purpose. 110 students employed systems including shape grammars, L- systems, fractals and cellular automata, to design and fabricate 8 group projects.A discussion around emergence and situatedness is presented, with special attention to the designing process from ideation to fabrication.

title Towards a BIM-Based Energy Rating System

summary Governments in Australia are faced with policy implementation that mandates higher energy efficient housing (Foran, Lenzen & Dey 2005). To this effect, the National Construction Code (NCC) 2013 stipulates the minimum energy performance for residential buildings as 114MJ/m2 per annum or 6 stars on an energy rating scale. Compliance with this minimum is mandatory but there are several methods through which residential buildings can be rated to comply with the deemed to satisfy provisions outlined in the NCC. FirstRate5 is by far the most commonly used simulation software used in Victoria, Australia. Meanwhile, Building Information Modelling (BIM), using software such as ArchiCAD has gained a foothold in the industry. The energy simulation software within ArchiCAD, EcoDesigner, enables the reporting on the energy performance based on BIM elements that contain thermal information. This research is founded on a comparative study between FirstRate5 and EcoDesigner. Three building types were analysed and compared. The comparison finds significant differences between simulations, being, measured areas, thermal loads and potentially serious shortcomings within FirstRate5, that are discussed along with the future potential of a fully BIM-integrated model for energy rating certification in Victoria.

summary The method proposed in this paper addresses the management of values and the cost estimate, based on target costing approach, and integrated with Building Information Model (BIM). This design method must incorporate mechanisms of automated assessment associated with desired value at cost during the design process. The paper will try to show, in brief, that there is a real possibility of inclusion of methodological tools of design, allowing assessment of values in real time during the design actions.

summary This research aims to build a method for making ubiquitous games using urban screens. It explores the boundaries between the fields of architecture, new media art and design, describing a theoretical framework that illustrates the potentials of designing game systems in the public space as well as the benefits that include the use of public screens to construct social interaction. Through the analysis and interpretation of several case studies we were able to determine the key aspects that designers should consider developing this kind of projects.

Whereas, in modern architecture an intense and varied competition happens between architects through various currents of thoughts , schools and movements, however, that creativity was the ultimate goal , and a the same time we find that every architect distinguishes himself individually or collectively through tools of architectural expression and design representation adopting a school of thought, using , for example, the leaves of various sizes and diverse technical drawing tools to accurately show that he can be read by professionals or craftsmen outside the geographical scope to which it belongs .With the rapid technological development which accompanied the digital craft in the contemporary world , The digital craft summed up time, distance and tools , so they gave the concept more appropriate accuracy , as virtualization has become the most effective tool for Architecture To reach the ideal and typical results at the practical level, or pure research. At the level of residential design and on the grounds that housing plays an important role in the government policies and given that housing is a basic unit common to all urban communities on earth , the use of different programs to show its typicality in two dimensions or in the third dimension - for example, using software "AutoCAD " " 3D Max " , " ArchiCAD " ... etc. - gave virtualisation smart, creative and beautiful forms which lead to better understand the used /or to be used residential spaces, and thus the conclusion that the life system of dwelling under design or under study , as can specifically recognize spatial structure in housing design - using digital software applying "Space Syntax" for example - in the shadow of slowly growing digital and creative development with the help of high-speed computers . the morphological structure of the dwelling is considered to be the most important contemporary residential designs Investigation through which the researcher in this area aims to understand the various behavioral relations and social structures within the projected residential area, using Space Syntax techniques. Through the structural morphology of dwellings can be inferred quality networks, levels of connectivity and depth and places of openness or closure within the dwelling under study, or under design. How, then, have intelligently contributed this digital craft to the perception of those spatial fixtures ? The aim of this research is to apply an appropriate program in the field of vernacular residential design and notably Space syntax which relate to the understanding and analysis of spatial structures, and also demonstrate its role at the morphological and spatial structure aspects, and prove how effective it helps to understand the social logic of domestic space through social individual/collective relationships and behaviors projected on the spatial configurations of dwellings. The answer to the issue raised above and at the methodological aspect, the study discussed the application of space syntax techniques on the subject. The findings tend to prove the efficiency by comparing samples of Berber vernacular domestic spaces from the Mzab, the Aures and Kabilya in Algeria, and has also led to ascertain the intelligibility of space syntax techniques in reading the differences between the behaviors in domestic spaces in different areas of the sample through long periods of time .

summary This paper describes the products of an exhibition organized by the authors that speculatively reconstructed the ‘long history’ of Architectural Biology to recover the cultural potential of biological metaphors in contemporary architecture. The extended historical timeline of the show spanned from the second half of the nineteenth century to the present. However, in contrast to previous shows that have isolated modern architects’ interests in the formalist principles of biology, this show examined the formal and cultural prerogatives of modern architects in tandem with one another. This historical framework encouraged the speculative analysis of the social and political relevance of contemporary claims, which inherently challenges the ahistorical bias of the postcritical debates that emerged in the new millennium. Widening our gaze to examine the ‘long history’ of biological metaphors in architecture enabled us to recuperate the cultural significance that biological references have accrued within the discipline of architecture. This disciplinary history promises to repair the historical amnesia that has beset contemporary architects who limit their analysis of biology to formalist principles of design. A key component of the exhibit was the conceptual pairing of the ‘primitive’ (cultural) concerns of nineteenth-century figures with the ‘parametric’ (formal) concerns of postwar and contemporary architects. Using Gottfried Semper as a representative figure for the former position, we reinterpreted the inherent cultural meaning of postwar and contemporary architectural works, including those completed by Frei Otto, Achim Menges, Lars Spuybroek, SHoP, and Evan Douglis. The material potential of this approach was expressed in the making of analytical maps, digital models, and conceptual drawings that explored the latent ‘primitive’ themes of contemporary ‘parametric’ designs.

The digital tools facilitate the information flow between designers using parametric model and Finite Element Analysis. To research the method of Performative Model is proposed the development of a conceptual framework of lattice wind tower with the aim of a quantitative and qualitative structure optimization. summary In this paper a theoretical and computational framework for a contemporary study of morphogenesis will be presented using a pulsation model. This study will revisit some of the valuable historical ideas on form developed by Goethe in the late eighteenth century. This investigation will be developed in three main parts. In the first part a brief outline of Goethe’s scientific methodology will be described positioning his achievements against the epistemology of Kant. In the second part Goethe’s main works on morphology will be presented with a focus on his botanical writings. Using a fragment titled "Formative Impulse" some of Goethe’s ideas on polar tendencies and metamorphosis will be used for a computational framework in the final part. By bridging among history, theory and technology the paper aims to present a novel approach to the study of computational form and growth in architecture.

summary This paper will present the main principles of Goethe’s Theory of Colours and formulate a theoretical approach for the study of polychromy in digital design pedagogy. In the first part of the paper a survey on colour theory will be presented comparing Goethe and Newton’s works on colour. The concepts of polarity [Polarität] and intensification [Steigerung] will be introduced as the two main principles of Goethe’s dynamic notion of colour. These terms will be used to explain how Goethe considered colours to induce sensual effects on the onlooker. In the second part a digital design studio that focuses on colour will be presented. The pedagogy will show how a dynamic notion of colour could be studied using digital tools. Some of the student works will be presented while addressing how a Goethean notion of sensual colours could be studied as spatial parameters. The goal of the paper is to distill a theoretical approach towards the study of colour in architecture and contemplate on how it could be applied within the digital design curriculum.

summary Heritage specialists (architect, historian, conservator, engineer, archaeologist, etc.) often face significant problems of representation and simulation assumptions restitution of monuments. The traditional graphic means cannot fulfill all the needs which are done day in the patrimonial restitution. That is why it is necessary to consider the services that digital technology can do, and think about their use in the representation of monuments in their environment. It can also be used to restore and to preserve heritage using digital statement which allows reconstituting numerically damaged parts or disappeared from historic buildings. The virtual model of restitution constitutes a solution which makes it possible to show the restitution of the site (or part of the site) without materializing it physically, using graphical means. The virtual restitution can be materialized in the form of digital restitution in 3D, but also by the use of drawings or others graphic techniques. In this paper, we present two techniques for digital statement: The Photomodelling and 3D laser scanning, which are used in the field of modeling heritage. Then we present case studies which were carried out within the framework of our teaching activities and research at the School of Architecture of Paris La Villette (ENSAPLV).

summary The general scope of this paper is to present the development of an approach for the generation of possible space layouts in the early stages of design. The approach sets out to bridge the gap between the free form brainstorming of the sketching designer and the deterministic parametric model of the computational designer. A new responsive design tool is developed; applying physical based modelling techniques to a computational environment. Springs and particles automates the initial placement and sizing of the spaces, and allows continuous user and software interaction. Keeping the design process alive, through springs that connects everything to everything and allows topology to change, opposed to the strict hierarchy and constraints of traditional parametric design. Thus instead of the topology being determined by initial constraints, the layout will be generated by probabilities of spaces to connect. Letting the storyline of potential users give answers to possible space layouts.

summary This paper explores the application of cellular automata as method for investigating the dynamic parameters and interrelationships that constitute the urban space. With increasing aspects needed for integration during the architectural and urban design process with the relations between these aspects growing in parallel, complexity of the design process and design solution increases. Additionally, aspects and relations are of a transformative character in that they change over time and therefore construct a time-based condition for which problems are presented and solutions are sought. An architectural methodological response to this situation is presented through the development of a conceptual computational design system that allows these dynamics to unfold and to be observed for architectural design decision taking. Reflecting on the development and implementation of a cellular automata based design approach on a master level urban design studio this paper will discuss the strategies for dealing with complexity at an urban scale as well as the pedagogical considerations behind applying computational tools and methods to a urban design education.

summary This paper investigates the potential and implications of using naturally occurring material phenomena as a connecting mechanism for solid timber components. Proposed and discussed are connections based on anisotropic shrinkage and geometrical variability of trees. Using the notion of material agency in design, following the bio-cybernetic and biomimetic frameworks, solutions are devised to reduce energy usage, environmental pollution and utilise low-processed material. Finally, consequences of the fusion of the natural (analogue) and the digital realms are discussed, with an example of a workflow integrating inherent material traits with digital manufacture.

summary Skin is the primary shield between our body and its surroundings. It protects the body from the harmful environmental effects like dehydration and radiation from intense sunlight. Likewise, the outer layer, or skin of a building has the same function of protecting its inhabitants against the external elements. This research is a part of a larger investigation into geometrical patterning and layering of facades as an effective intervention between the outdoor space and the indoor environment to regulate the conditions for occupant thermal comfort. This paper reports on exploration of an approach for measurement, evaluation and feedback in the design workflow through a mixed digital -physical simulation platform (MDPS) based on the objectives of the larger study. For this purpose, it introduces a new way of analyzing thermal performance of double skin facades by using temperature sensors, Arduino, post visualization with MATLAB and digital energy simulation. The main aspects of this proposed workflow is the design of a thermal performance feedback loop as an integral part of the process of geometrical patterning design for façade.

summary The paper presents a novel approach on the design of complex forms by re-formulating the relationships between form, structure, material, fabrication and construction. It is proposed that current design models are supplemented by feedback-enabled frameworks, integrating material properties, fabrication constraints and construction logistics. As such, a series of input parameters based on industry standards, filtered through physical testing and digital simulations, feed a central computational model. The outcome is weighed against a set of objectives towards an optimum design solution which embodies construction logic while ultimately opposing costly inflated ad-hoc solutions. Within the above framework and as part of a broader research conducted at [ARC], this paper illustrates a design methodology implemented at the case study of 'God's Eye', winning entry of Sukkahville 2013 International Design Competition. It is further supported that a high tech, interdisciplinary design process based on efficient material assemblies allows for a complex, yet efficient end result, through low tech affordable construction.

summary Recently more researches on tangible objects have been conducted that enhance the intuitive polygonal or surface modelling of designers in digital and physical worlds. However, a few researches have been done that augment the digital solid modelling with tangible objects. In this paper, we present the Augmented Solid Modeller (ASoM) which helps designers create more complex shapes by a combination of Boolean operations between a different type of 3D-printed tangible objects, which is different from the conventional single shape type bottom-up modelling approaches. When multiple objects intersect each other at a given position and angle, the interference or removed shape is often unexpected for designers. Also, as 3D-printed objects are used for designers only to configure and discuss the shape of final digital 3D model in existing CAAD, ASoM changes the role of 3D-printed objects from the replicas to reusable tools for other modelling opportunities. We offered ASoM to students majoring or interested in CAAD and interviewed them to get comments. Since the speed and precision of 3D-printing will achieve immediate improvement, ASoM is a pioneer in developing cutting-edge approach for designers to model both in digital and physical worlds.

summary This paper reports a teaching and learning experience of architectural digital three-dimensional geometric modeling from its tectonic character, with regard to the interactions between the formal architectural framework and its sturdy structure. Was held at the undergraduate course in Architecture and Urbanism of the Universidade Federal da Paraíba. It´s an interdisciplinary exercise aimed at the integration of knowledge where students utilize the contents learned in the discipline of Structural Systems I for the construction of a digital three-dimensional geometric model with the Trimble´s software Sketchup in the Perspective discipline, resulting in the development of models with greater formal consistency.

summary Designers keep a constant record of the design process through their sketches and notes. In parametric CAD, the record of design moves is implicit and can be found in the elements upon which the parametric model is built. Current systems provide designers with limited tools for recording, viewing or analyzing the design process. We propose a system's approach to capture the design narrative as an artefact for design. The Design ReExplorer was developed to test ideas on using these narratives in gaining insights towards how models are built, exploring alternatives and supporting backtracking and deferral strategies in design exploration. We evaluate its insertion and viability in real-world scenarios through an expert panel study. The results of the study are favourable with positive feedback and multiple suggestions for future work.
