title Mobile Learning in a History of Art and Architecture Classroom

summary This paper presents a pilot project, using mobile devices in a History of Art and Architecture classroom to enhance instructor-student classroom interactions and student learning. At our Faculty of Architecture this particular class has a usual high failure rate (26% F in 2012). It is a compulsory course for architecture students, some of them are required to take this course twice or more before they can graduate. Traditional learning is lecture-based, and students studying toward their tests are often overloaded with information. In June 2013, Rangsit University initiated a new policy to provide tablets to every freshmen; around 7,200 tablets were distributed campus-wide (Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 with S-pen). Toward the end of the class, the students were asked to complete a questionnaire in order to find out what they think about mobile learning. Typically, students are quite satisfied, and give positive feedback in their comments. The experience gained from this pilot project will be extended to other classes.

title Computational Design Research in Architecture: The Legacy of the Hochschule für Gestaltung, Ulm

summary The use of computational processes in architecture is a widespread practice which draws on a set of theories of computer science developed in the 60s and 70s. With the advent of computers, many of these methodologies were developed in research centres in the USA and the UK. Focussing on this period, this paper investigates the importance of the German Hochschule fur Gestaltung, Ulm (HfG) design school in the early stages of computation in design and architecture. Even though there were no computers in the school, it may be argued that its innovative pedagogy and distinguished faculty members launched analogical computational design methods that can be seen as the basis for further computational approaches in architecture. The paper draws on archive material, as well as at an original interview with Tomas Maldonado, to propose that the remarkable work pursued by Tomas Maldonado (the educational project), Max Bense (information aesthetics) and Horst Rittel (scientific methods) was fundamental in establishing HfG Ulm as the forerunner of computation in architecture.

summary This ongoing research describes a feedback loop procedure where physical inputs are used as the medium for offline robotic simulation. The purpose is to investigate the ability of industrial robots that are currently used in manufacturing processes to work in a flexible and productive manner whilst providing a continuous feedback loop between physical inputs and fabrication artifacts. In order to achieve this, a methodology is developed that involves the use of data acquisition devices to enable the transference of information from the physical to the digital environment and then to use this data as real-time parameters to control the robot's behaviour during fabrication. The aim is to achieve active involvement of robots in the manufacturing process to address complex construction issues and to ensure accuracy, a reduction in manufacturing defects and flexibility in the materials used. This investigation is accompanied by relevant experiments to exemplify the potential of control mechanisms to be used in prototyping case studies.

title Project Arrivée: Counter-mapping Super-diversity in Brussels and Ghent with Architecture Students

summary This paper introduces a counter-mapping attempt augmented by a Geoweb 2.0 platform in the context of two Belgian inner-city neighborhoods. The two aims of this project were to build a platform for the collective construction of a better understanding this dynamic super-diverse arrival environment and bring the various qualities and aspects of these super-diverse urban neighborhoods to foreground. In this study we report on the first results of this project which took place in Ghent and Brussels in 2014. Around 300 architecture students registered, interpreted and geocoded visible signs along preconceived tracks by means of a Geoweb 2.0 platform. Through field observations and interviews, the students created dynamic and interactive maps. We found that the large-scale mapping through Geoweb 2.0 makes it possible to discern different layers of use in arrival neighborhoods. These layers referred to different population groups which continuously have to negotiate each other's presence. Furthermore, the platform created the possibility to effectively and efficiently combine student fieldwork with online and offline lectures and offered students the opportunity to comment on, peer-review and learn from each other's insights. The findings will serve as an alternative information resource in the forthcoming Master's thesis graduation design studio which will be led by the first author.

summary Behavior, adaptation and responsiveness are characteristics of live organisms; architecture on the other hand is structurally, materially and functionally constructed. With the shift from ‘mechanical’ towards ‘organic’ paradigm (Mae-Wan Ho, 1997) attitude towards architectural adaptation, behavior and performance is shifting as well. This change is altering a system of reference and conceptual basis for architecture by suggesting the integration of dynamics – dynamics that don’t address kinetic movement only but include flows of energies, material and information. This paper presents an ongoing research into kinetic material system with the focus on non-mechanical actuation (shape memory alloy) and the structural and material behavior. It proposes an adaptive surface capable of altering its shape and forming small occupiable spaces that respond to external and internal influences and flows of information. The adaptive structure is developed as a physical and digital prototype. Its behavior is examined at a physical level and the findings are used to digitally simulate the behavior of the larger system. The design approach is driven by an interest in adaptive systems in nature and material variability (structural and functional) of naturally constructed materials. The broader goal of the research is to test the scale at which shape memory alloy can be employed as an actuator of dynamic architectural surfaces and to speculate on and explore the capacity of active and responsive systems to produce adaptable surfaces that can form occupiable spaces and with that, added functionalities in architectural and urban environments.

summary Documentation errors have been identified as a significant problem within the construction and engineering industry. Errors contained with contract documents can contribute to loss of profit, reduced productivity, and cost and time overruns as well as contractual disputes. Research has identified that as much as 60% of variations in construction and engineering projects are a result of errors and omissions contained within poor quality documentation. Using a case study, errors, omissions and information redundancy contained in the Electrical and Instrumentation (E&I) 'As built' drawings for a Stacker Conveyor is examined. A total of 449 errors and omissions were identified within 42 documents. In addition, 231 cables and components appeared once among the 42 documents; 86 cables and components appeared twice and 12 cables and components appeared three times. As a result of the errors, omissions and redundancy, requests for information (RFIs) are required. Retrospective analysis indicates that the indirect cost of raising the RFIs to the contractor was estimated to be 8.93% of the cost of the E&I contract. To address the problems of errors, omissions and redundancy, it is suggested that there is a need to adopt an object orientated system information model (SIM) for E&I engineering design and documentation. It is demonstrated in the case study that the use of a SIM could bring significant improvements in productivity and reduce the cost of engineering design.

title A Semiotic Analysis of Representational Imagery Used in a Collective Design Task

summary Collective Design seeks to explore how new forms of Collective Intelligence, arising from the web, allows mass participation in design. Regarding design we have a wellestablished grounding for understanding how design works through the use of representations. Likewise, collective intelligence via certain crowdsourcing examples has demonstrated that a diverse crowd can trump ability groups, when the conditions are right. In the literature, crowdsourcing is the leading lens bridging design with collective intelligence. However in crowdsourcing design there is less focus on the role of shared representations, subsequently any collective diversity is mitigated by the models that govern the extraction of this intelligence. We propose that more effective design in collective intelligence lies in the crowd’s ability to generate meaningful contributions via the content of shared representations. In order to investigate this, the current paper examines data collected from a pilot study in which a representationally rich online collaborative presentation tool is used to provide a shared design space. The analysis presented applies our previously established semiotic framework to identify potential patterns in the meaningful communication of image based design information.

summary As the design processes in Architectural practices switch toward entirely digital workflows, architects are gradually required, because of their legal and commercial liability, to provide for both a relatively long term curation of their own digital products and the deposit of authoritative data. But, despite being the sole curation actors for their data, architects receive little education or training in either pertinent competences nor agreed and established procedures to comply with these duties. In this paper, the design of Digital Curation courses within CAAD Curricula will be discussed against the investigation results of the DEDICATE project, an AHRC funded project hosted at the Humanities Advanced Technology and Information Institute of the University of Glasgow.

summary Angled and forked wood – a desired material until 19th century, was swept away by industrialization and its standardization of processes and materials. Contemporary information technology has the potential for the capturing and recognition of individual geometries through laser scanning and computation and subsequently design and bespoke CNC fabrication. The question whether this allows for a new approach to the uniqueness that is offered to us by nature is discussed in a series of workshops and projects, which explore the performative potential of naturally grown materials.

summary Although some studies investigate physics-based dynamic systems to generate structurally efficient forms by incorporating geometry with performance requirements, there is a gap in the field questioning on how to link structurally efficient architectural geometry with mechanical properties of materials. The aim of this paper is to question the possibility of generating an information loop in which Young's Modulus, stiffness of the material may both inform the form-finding process and the structural performance simulation. The proposed method offers steps including form-finding, series of analyses applied for architectural geometry and structural performance, as well as optimization. Based on the simulation results, efficiency values are calculated driven by the use of different materials. The significance of incorporating material properties in the early design stage is underlined, by comparing differences, whether the stiffness of material informs the form-finding process or not.

summary Prior to the Industrial Age, most architecture was created by the master craftsman or within the vernacular trades where “design” and “making” were aligned. The Industrial Age, and most recently the Information Age, shifted the role of the architect away from that of the “master craftsman” to the professional “knowledge worker.” As a result, a divide between design and making in the practice of architecture occurred.  This shift impacted an essential part of the architect’s process by degrading the symbiotic relationship between mind and hand and limiting the immediate design consequences that only making can provide. But recent technological developments have changed the economic model of design and making in architectural practice and re-established this lost connection. Most importantly, it has provided new opportunities for craft, design, and architectural practice to align. The purpose of this paper is to examine these new opportunities and define what constitutes the digital vernacular. The paper will seek to define the digital vernacular by evaluating each of the following variables: materials, knowledge, and tools. Using normative practice as a control, the paper will conduct a comparative analysis of these variables by examining economic viability (cost-to-wage ratios), logistical feasibility (training & facilities), and skillset availability within the domain of architecture (insourced versus outsourced). Using this data, and resulting guidelines, the paper will demonstrate the successes and failures of a practice using the digital vernacular as its primary project delivery methodology. The focus of this research is not to build an inventory of equipment and methods; rather it is to develop a higher understanding of what constitutes vernacular practice within the digital age. Exploring the digital vernacular is not intended to seek new form-making, but to improve and inform understanding of traditional vernacular methods and to enable a new generation of master craftsmen. This clarity is imperative as to ensure the quality of design and making with emerging technologies and help to prevent high-volume, low-quality results.

summary This paper introduces a new spatial analysis methodology based on visibility graphs. Through various design elements architects can create configurations where our visual field and the relations of spaces can be challenged in a combinatorial game beyond the easily accessible and understandable boundaries of the environment. This research explores the trans-spatial architectural elements, transparencies and projected realities that playfully challenge visibility, permeability and accessibility in built environment. The paper presents the computational problem of analysing spaces that include 'augmented visibilities' and areas with 'inaccessible but visible' locations, where dislocated multi-dimensional overlaps frequently occur. Furthermore, proposes a new 'mixed-directionality graph structure' and the definition of 'Augmented Visibility Graph Analysis' (AVGA) as a new spatial analysis methodology. AVGA overcomes limitations of current visibility graph analysis theories and allows the analysis of architectural and urban space that includes visuo-spatial overlaps, hybrid configurations and multi-dimensional information. Finally, a series of mathematical graph analysis measures and test cases associated with observations and experimental data from real spaces is presented in order to demonstrate AVGA.

title Cybernetic diagrams: design strategies for an open game

summary This paper investigates the use of diagrams related to cybernetics and information theory in experimental design practices in the 1960s and 1970s.Those diagrams are investigated in light of Vile_m Flusser’s concept of game, which mediates the modus operandi of computers and possible strategies for design based on distributed cognition.The research adopts the interpretative method to analyze the diagram proposed by cyberneticist Gordon Pask for Fun Palace, the diagrams produced by utopian architect Yona Friedman in the conceptual description of the Flatwriter program and Christopher Alexander’s diagrams for his theories of Synthesis of Form and Pattern Language. In the end, it establishes a brief parallel between current debates of computational design with the cybernetic diagrams, highlighting differences in their approach to complexity and design knowledge.

summary Project development within Industrial Design generates a wide range of information unique to each stage of the process. Managing and monitoring design projects is a particularly complex and challenging task, especially in a classroom setting. The use of a digital platform provides an opportunity to save, organize and guide design projects and facilitates collaborative feedback between students and professors. A preliminary version of the present study was carried out using open-source information technologies: PHP 5.2.8, MySQL 5.1.30, Jquery 1.7.1.mins, Smarty-2.6.9. This proposal seeks to complement the on-site class component in order to provide follow-up, mapping and feedback on design projects.

summary The advancement of sensor technologies makes it possible to collect large amounts of dynamic urban data. On the other hand, how to store, process, and analyze collected urban data to make them useful becomes a new challenge. To address this issue, this paper proposes a visual analytics framework, which is applied to transportation data to manage and extract information for urban studies. More specifically, the proposed framework has three components: (1) a geographic information system (GIS) based pipeline providing basic data processing functions; (2) a spatial network analysis that is integrated into the pipeline for extracting spatial structure of urban movement; (3) interactive operations allowing the user to explore and view the output data sets at different levels of details. Taking Singapore as a case study area, we use a sample data set from the automatic smart card fare collection system as an input to our prototype tool. The result shows the feasibility of proposed framework and analysis method. To summarize, our work shows the potential of geospatial based visual analytics tools in using ‘big’ data for urban analysis.

The idea behind this research paper lies in design of such structures, which could be put inside an urban context and engage in creating a built environment that can add more to the quality of life. For us Interactive architecture is architecture that is responsive, flexible, changing, always moving and adapting to the needs of today. The world is becoming more dynamic, society is constantly changing and the new needs it develops need to be accommodated. As a result architecture has to follow. Spaces have to become more adaptive, responsive and nature concerned, while having the ability for metamorphosis, flexibility and interactivity. Taken as a starting point of this idea is a specific module from graduation project in 2014 "The Unexpected city", where it was possible to test out first ideas about interactive and flexible objects in an urban environment.
