title Improving Generative Design by Combining Abstract Geometry and Higher-Order Programming

summary Generative Design (GD) involves the use of algorithms that compute designs. To take advantage of the computational power of computers, these algorithms must be implemented in a programming language. Although most programming languages have the same computational power, they have very different expressive powers. In this paper we focus on exploring the expressive power of languages and we argue that (1) the ability to use abstract geometry as input and (2) the use of higher-order programming dramatically simplifies the implementation of GD algorithms. We illustrate these concepts using a large and complex example that was developed as a case-study.

summary The expressive power of a language measures the breadth of ideas that can be described in that language and is strongly dependent on the constructs provided by the language. In the programming language area, one of the constructs that increases the expressive power is the concept of higher-order function (HOF). A HOF is a function that accepts functions as arguments and/or returns functions as results. HOF can drastically simplify the programming activity, reducing the development effort, and allowing for more adaptable programs. In this paper we explain the concept of HOFs and its use for Generative Design. We then compare the support for HOF in the most used programming languages in the GD field and we discuss the pedagogy of HOFs.

summary The "Roomba House" (RH) is a novel generative design approach based on robotic interaction with the physical environment in order to inductively identify design opportunities for improving the design of future robot-inclusive spaces and furniture. The paper presents the theoretical and technological details of this approach, an empirical study of a cleaning robot and sample results from an evolutionary system inspired by heuristics inductively derived from the study. RH is an informed provocation based on the recognition that increasingly widespread domestic robots that roam our living spaces will infer key features and help produce creative design solutions that maintain or improve user requirements while improving their inclusiveness in everyday life.

summary This paper presents an interactive apparatus to didactically explore Alberti's treatise on architecture, De re aedificatoria, as generative design systems, namely shape grammars. This apparatus allows users to interactively explore such architectonical knowledge in both appealing and informal ways, by enabling them to visualize and manipulate in real-time different design solutions. The authors identify the difficulties on encoding the architectural knowledge of a parametric design model into an interactive apparatus to be used by laypeople. At last, the authors discuss the results of a survey conducted to users that interacted with the prototype in order to assess its ability to communicate the knowledge of an architectural language.

summary Bricks have been used in the construction industry as a building medium for millennia. Distinct patterns of bricks depict the unique aesthetic intentions found in Roman, Gothic and Islamic architecture. In contemporary practice, the use of digital tools in design has enabled methodologies for creating new forms in architecture. CAD and BIM systems provide new opportunities for designers to create parametric objects for building form generation. In masonry design, there exists an inherent contradiction between traditional patterns in brick design, which are formal and prescribed, and the potential for new patterns generated using design scripting. In addition, current tools do not provide interactive techniques for the design of brickwork patterns that can manage constant changes parametrically, to inform and influence design process, by providing design feedback on the constructive and structural aspects of the proposed brick pattern and geometry. This research looks into the parametric techniques that can be applied to create different kinds of patterns on brick walls. It discusses a methodology for an interactive brickwork design within generative techniques. By integrating data between two computational platforms – the first based on image analysis and the second on parametric modeling, we demonstrate a methodology and application that can generate interactive arbitrary patterns and map it to the brick wall in real-time.

summary This paper reflects a collaborative, research led design project, aiming to explore the potentials offered by incorporating parametric / generative tools and performative lighting simulation software in order to design and fabricate a small pavilion for the School of Architecture. The Deceptive Landscape pavilion was designed in the framework of a masters level, research led, and collaborative design studio. During its intense 12 weeks schedule, student teams were asked to explore and apply generative / parametric tools such as Rhino and Grasshopper, in order to design and later construct a small pavilion, with a theme of their choice. In addition, each team was asked to optimise their design proposal by embedding environmental software plug-ins (e.g. DIVA for Rhino) in their design process, thereby aiming to re-inform their parametric models and set performance targets. Finally each team was expected to propose a file to factory fabrication technique, following all constrains of a limited, predetermined budget. The most convincing and consistent proposal, was then chosen for fabrication. The finalised project serves as verification of the effectiveness of the design system and teaching methods used.

summary While the digital era has brought with it a vast assortment of tools from which we can generate form and geometry, often the result is a tendency to focus primarily on either surfaces or solids as a means of modeling for representation or fabrication which consequently impact the various fabrication and construction techniques deployed in order to realize such digital models. This paper presents an approach to coalesce techniques of surface generation via computational tools, and strategies for constructing volumetric elements through a process of backfilling with composite materials.

summary This article aims to describe the ephemeral qualities that typography acquires in the digital context, caused by the polyvalence of the algorithmic code, which, from generative programming, allows the user to interact with the typographic object. These reflection are realized through the study of four projects: “Lettree” (2004), “Pyrographie” (2005), “Falling in Love” (2016) and “He liked Thick Word Soup” (2014). The observations were made by drawing a comparison between the concept of “matter” in the computational scenario proposed by the design philosopher Vilém Flusser (2015) and the quality of “fluidity” observed in the images created by digital generative programs.

summary In this paper we aimed at the development of a novel tool to facilitate the structured analysis of architectural construction principles, materials and production methods in digital design and fabrication practices. In order to assist the understanding and teaching of these subjects, we employed a taxonomy of spatial design construction (Vrouwe 2013). By using the taxonomy, we analysed and categorised 34 parametric structures published in the IJAC Journal (2002-2014). Informed by this study, we aligned the initial taxonomy using various framing strategies. As a result we developed a new framework for spatial design construction specifically customised for the design and fabrication of parametric structures which can potentially serve as a constructive tool to create a novel design learning environment and integrated teaching strategies.

title Visual Dataflow Modelling - Some thoughts on complexity

summary When visual programming is applied to design, it results in a parametric modelling approach that we refer to as Visual Dataflow Modelling (VDM). This paper reviews existing VDM environments and identifies key issues that result in dataflow graphs with high complexity. In order to explore how these issues could be overcome, a new VDM environment is being developed, called Vidamo. For any given parametric modelling task, Vidamo aims to support a style of VDM where the complexity of the dataflow graph remains commensurate with the complexity of the task. An initial experiment is conducted in which the existing environments and the proposed Vidamo environment are used to complete the same parametric modelling task. The results indicate that the dataflow graphs created using Vidamo are much smaller and less complex.

summary This paper reports on the computational modelling research investigating spatial organisations often associated with unplanned settlements. Such spatial agglomerates are composed of several co-located but autonomous units (agents) that share common facilities and infrastructure (e.g. circulation). Depending on the context, units in the agglomerate represent individual dwellings, apartments or abstract spatial geometry. The paper presents early prototype models that can be interpreted at various scale, and a computational model for generating organic settlement layouts. The originality of the research resides within a new multi-agent algorithm for creating spatial organisations. The agglomeration process benefits from two distinct generative design strategies – self-organisation and adaptive development strategy. While the self-organisation accounts for the emergence of the global structure in the agglomeration, the adaptive development strategy ensures that the basic environmental and spatial requirements of each individual unit are satisfied.

summary This study, which scans an architectural space with two-wheel vehicle robot technology that allows the flexible collection of three-dimensional (3D) data, may initiate the interaction between human beings and architecture in the future. It focuses on extracting building geometry and capturing human behavior in order to allow a space to communicate with human behavior. The current project extracts building geometry and human behavior data to create designs through a two-wheel robot; it was a collaborative project among the students of different majors, including mechanical engineering, human interaction, computer sciences, and architectural design. In this paper, the adaptive possibility of the RGB-Depth camera is examined in extracting building geometry.

summary Building designers make decisions in early design stages that have large impact on building performance, including those of energy-, daylight- and indoor environment performance. Building performance simulation (BPS) tools can support the designer, in making better decisions, by providing the performance consequences of design choices. However BPS tools often require deep technical knowledge and is too time consuming to use to effectively support the design exploration in the early design stages. To solve this challenge, the current paper proposes: Sentient building performance simulation systems, which combine one or more high precision BPS tools to provide near instantaneous performance feedback directly in the design tool. Sentient BPS systems are essentially combining: 1) design tools, 2) parametric tools, 3) BPS tools, 4) dynamic databases 5) interpolation techniques and 6) prediction techniques as a fast and valid simulation system for the early design stage.

title DiNa Framework and Prototype to Support Collaboration in the Wild

summary Much of the available collaboration support tools focus on sharing of documents and managing projects that require planned activities. These tools fall short in meeting principle of least effort or taking into account of the reality of complex work patterns. We propose DiNa framework and system architecture for a topic centric as opposed to document-centric collaboration system using readily available devices. DiNa aims to complement existing approaches. Our primary goal is to seek answers for how these devices can better support collaboration without overloading the workflow. After a literature review and roleplaying exercises, the prototypes we developed demonstrate new interaction techniques for defining topics and address them in collaborators’ own terms. It uses different visualizations of the artefacts and their association with the topics, among which is a scalable timeline interface accessible from different platforms, to make the artefacts collected more meaningful in a given context. In this paper we present our recent prototype as a proof-of-concept and its initial evaluations followed by the lessons learnt from our studies on supporting collaboration in the wild. The evaluation outcome is suggestions for improving DiNa-based systems for effective collaboration.

summary This paper presents the progress of a pilot classroom, which uses mobile devices to enhance instructor-student classroom interac- tions and students’ learning of the History of Art and Architecture. The main objective of this research was to find a way of improving classroom activities, for the coming year, by making the best possible use of technology to enable students to learn more successfully and improve their understanding of the lesson content. In this paper, class- room activities during 2014 and 2015 are analysed using the SAMR Model coupled with Bloom’s revised taxonomy and the EdTech Quin- tet Model. In addition, a plan for the redesign and improvement of ac- tivities in 2016 is proposed, the effectiveness of the SAMR model at improving in class activities is discussed and a perspective on how to develop the classroom using the “SAMR ladder” is included. The re- sults show that in 2015, 25% of the students in the class achieved an A grade, and less than 5% were graded F compared to 26% in 2012.
