summary This paper presents part of a wider research on interfaces and processes in the production of spatialities in architecture, which focuses on the diagrams as ways of knowledge spatialization. The article is structured in two parts. The first systematizes theoretical aspects and proposes the concept of diagram as topological machine, from which are identified different modes of operation. The second part presents a case study about the diagrams produced by the Danish office BIG (Bjark Ingels Group) to mark one of the inflections of the diagrams in contemporary architecture, directed at communicative pragmatism.

title Confronting the Challenges of Computational Design Instruction

summary Many architects understand that learning to program can be a challenge, but assume that time and practice are the only barriers to performing well enough at it. However, research from computer science education does not support this assumption. Multinational studies of undergraduate computer science programs reveal that a significant number of students in their first and second year of fulltime instruction still have serious misconceptions about how computer programs work and an inability to design programs of their own. If computer science students have trouble learning to think and express themselves computationally, what does this say about architects' chances of learning to program well? Moreover, if common problems have been identified, can architectural educators learn anything from findings in computer science education research? In order to determine if this research is relevant to architecture, the author conducted a pilot study of architecture students consisting of program analysis and conceptual knowledge tests. The study found that student performance was poor in ways similar to those revealed in the computer science education research. Because architects face similar challenges as computer science majors, this suggests that the discipline could benefit from more investment in educational collaborations. In addition, empirical research – from architecture as well as other fields – must play a more substantial role in helping architects learn computational thinking and expression.

title Binocular Disparity and Depth Cue of Luminance Contrast

summary Luminance contrast has been identified as an effective depth cue through perceptual studies using digital images generated by the integrated technologies of physically based lighting simulation and perceptually based tone mapping. However, the prior established framework utilizes a single camera viewpoint, failing to address the binocular vision of the human visual system. In this study, the computational framework is extended to incorporate 3-dimensional (3D) stereo display technology. Psychophysical experiments were conducted to investigate the depth effect of luminance contrast on the experimental scenes presented on conventional and stereo displays. The objective of this study was twofold: first, to investigate the effect of luminance contrast on depth perception, considering binocular vision; second, to further advance the visual realism of the computer-generated environment to reflect the perceptual reality of static pictorial and binocular disparity cues.

Both volumes together contain 130 papers that were submitted and accepted to this conference. The theme of the 32nd eCAADe conference is Fusion- data integration at its best. All quests for data integration in architecture and the construction industry lead ultimately to FUSION, a synthesis of knowledge that transcends mere combination. FUSION is the dream of a knowledge system that will enable multiple sets of data, in manifold formats, to be presented in a unified view. This conference is exploring the possibilities for advanced levels of data integration in the service of the representation and management of the natural environment, and the design, visualisation and making of the built environment. summary When thinking about the future vision of a city, having in mind recent development in digital technologies and digital design tools we are inclined to expect new building structures which incorporate this technology to better help us manage the complexity of life, and to simplify our daily lives and tasks. The idea behind this research paper lies in design of such structures, which could be put inside an urban context and engage in creating a built environment that can add more to the quality of life. For us Interactive architecture is architecture that is responsive, flexible, changing, always moving and adapting to the needs of today. The world is becoming more dynamic, society is constantly changing and the new needs it develops need to be accommodated. As a result architecture has to follow. Spaces have to become more adaptive, responsive and nature concerned, while having the ability for metamorphosis, flexibility and interactivity. Taken as a starting point of this idea is a specific module from graduation project in 2014 "The Unexpected city", where it was possible to test out first ideas about interactive and flexible objects in an urban environment.

summary The cosmological nature of Islamic architecture makes it a useful case study for the capability of the adaptation, assimilation and accommodation with the development of evolutionary algorithms and their applications in architectural design. Genetic algorithm derives its structure from the observation of nature. We shall review the concept of intelligent agents and their organization into complex adaptive systems as well as genetic-type algorithms for learning and evolution. Since algorithmic art consists of generation of images on the basis of algorithms, algorithms can be viewed as a notation, and notation is something that music has but visual artefacts in general miss. This paper aims to discover the role of evolutionary algorithms in historical Islamic architecture. Also, we shall try to investigate the way in which the future development could occur not only through the discovery of new facts or theories, but also through the rise and dissemination of new visions having different explanation of Islamic architecture that considers it as a result of serious application of formation through evolutionary genetic algorithms.

summary The paper will present one specific aspect of the PhD research called Cibersemiótica e Processos de Projeto: Metodologia em Revisão, funded by FAPESP, which in turn is linked to the Nomads.usp research group of the University of São Paulo. The paper discusses the relevance of communication and information management in the digital design processes from the synchronic study of concepts such as feedback loop, control and self-regulation. These concepts are present in both biosemiotic and interactive design of functional cycle proposed in 1934 by biologist Jakob von Uexküll, as in cybernetic development proposed by Gordon Pask in his sophisticated Conversation Theory in the early 1970’s.

summary This paper discusses ways emerging interactive technologies are adopted by designers and extended into areas of design, education, entertainment, and commerce. It looks, in detail, at various project development stages and methodologies used to engage design focused students into, often complex, technological issues. The discussion is contextualized through a number of case studies of mobile and marker-based augmented reality (AR) applications developed by students. These applications include an app for a fashion based social event that allows participants to preview recent collection additions, an info-navigational app for the High Line elevated urban park in New York City, a marker-based maze game, and an interior decorating interface to visualize various furnishing scenarios. While a number of case studies will be discussed from a developer perspective, the primary focus is on the concept and content development, interface design, and user participation.

summary This article discusses the introduction of sensible dimensions of space, through the memory of significant places, and the audiovisual as a tool in architectural education. Departing from the tradition of graphic representation and the development of an architectural program, the article decribes the experiece of a studio focused on the remembrance of domestic places and the development of videos. An expected result, the video showed its potential as articulator of sensible dimensions. However, several student projects evidenced a disconnection between its graphic representation and the video, and therefore exposing the difficulties of the experience’s systematization into a design method.

summary This paper presents the development of a telepresence interface intended to investigate the possibility of a “place” for remote meeting. The main goal is to create a shared realm making users act remotely to expand their senses of presence and belonging. By using spatialized sensors and actuators it is possible to transform a room in a telecommunication device. The interface does not seek to replace other telecommunication technologies but to create a new way for autonomous communication which might also complement the existent ones.

summary The añú community lives in Laguna Sinamaica territory of complexity building their habitat in wooden stilts houses, based on culture and añú cosmogony. A rural-urban intervention is done without understanding the conceptualization and development. This paper presents a methodology for analyzing the lagoon habitat, premises in the creative process, design and construction for future interventions, and a reflection on the use of criteria for urban and architectural design in modern water villages. summary This article proposes to study the process of parametric design integrated analysis and structural design. This application model is called Performative Model; the form is generated based on performance criteria. The digital tools facilitate the information flow between designers using parametric model and Finite Element Analysis. To research the method of Performative Model is proposed the development of a conceptual framework of lattice wind tower with the aim of a quantitative and qualitative structure optimization. Therefore, the parametric modeling will be done using Rhinoceros software, the plugin for creating algorithms Grasshoper and structural analysis plugin Scan & Solve.

title Supporting Tools for Early Stages of Architectural Design

summary In architectural design, pencil and paper remain the most frequently used media to create freehand drawings to support early design stages. Digital tools conventionally used by architects lack appropriate functionalities and do not offer friendly interfaces for the early stages of architectural design.These are the bad news.The good news are twofold: a) hardware already available can help freehand designers todigitally express their first ideas; and b) functionality principles present in experimental software combined with appropriate hardware could successfully provide a friendly and intuitive human-computer interaction in the early stages of architectural design.This paper takes special attention to the way architects interact with computers, how input devices constrain possible interactions and how functionalities can be explored through these interactions.The article summarizes basic principles to be considered in the development of an all-in-one software and create a scenario whereby these principles are simulated on a hypothetical software to be used during the early stages of architectural design.

summary This paper presents the evolutionary algorithms associated with a generative system as a design method for creating a roof. The flexibility of the system allowed the generation of five experiments with different formal arrangements, contributing to the development of the creative process by obtaining unexpected results and more efficient. The paper presents a brief conceptual description of the evolutionary generative system, the description of the method used and the analysis of results.

summary Design is one of the basic skills of every engineer. However until now design is only seen as a core course in Architecture studies and lately in Industrial Engineering studies. This paper reports about the development of a design course for all departments of a typical technical university. After a short overview of design teaching tradition, an inventory is presented of the different interpretation of design by the various departments. The course development is presented over two periods: 2012-2014, and 2014-2015. In between a major change was conducted. The course learning goals and student evaluations are presented. In the discussion we reflect on fundamental and practical problems that occur in design teaching for such a wide audience. Finally we draw conclusions on the changing role of design what is needed to give design the same status as mathematics in a technical curriculum.
