summary While learning computer-aided modeling techniques, students of architecture should not only gain knowledge on how to model three-dimensional forms, but also how to define and understand the information beneath the shapes. Architectural presentation as an intellectual communication-focused process requires new media to channel information in a contemporary way. These can be text, image, sound, video or a digital model. The integration of augmented reality in teaching computer-aided modeling in architecture school provides more thorough learning experience as it opens new opportunities. The authors present the process of implementing AR technology in architectural education - its theoretical background, the outcome of students' work and technical solutions. They argue that the use of AR interface increases the effectiveness of user-model interaction in comparison to standard mouse-based techniques of three-dimensional manipulation due to the intuitive touch-screen interaction and direct control on the camera.

summary Augmented reality has come a long way and experienced a paradigm shift in 1999 when the ARToolKit was released as open source. The nature of interaction between the physical world and the virtual-world has changed forever. Fortunately for the AECO industry, the transition from traditional Computer Aided Design to virtual building design phrased as Building Information Modeling has created a tremendous potential to adopt Augmented Reality. The presented research is situated in the early design stage of project inception and focuses on supporting informed collective decision-making, characterized by a dynamic back and forth analytical process generating large amounts of data. Facilitation aspects, such as data-collection, storage and access to enable comparability and evaluation are crucial for collective decision-making. The current research has addressed these aspects by means of data accessibility, visualization and presentation. At the core of the project is a custom developed Augmented Reality framework that enables data interaction within the design model. In order to serve as a collaborative decision support engine, the framework also allows multiple models and their datasets to be displayed and exercised simultaneously. The paper demonstrates in the case study the successful application of the AR tool during collaborative design decision meetings.

title Extending Processing to CAD applications

summary The Processing language was created to teach programming to the design, architecture, and electronic arts communities. Despite its success, Processing has limited applicability in the architectural realm, as no CAD (Computer-Aided Design) or BIM (Building Information Modeling) application supports Processing. As a result, architects that have learnt Processing are unable to use the language in the context of modern, script-based, architectural work. This work joins Processing with the world of CAD or BIM applications, creating a solution that allows architects to prototype new designs using Processing and generate results in a CAD or BIM application. To achieve this, we developed an implementation of Processing for the Rosetta programming environment, allowing Processing scripts to generate 2D and 3D models in a variety of CAD or BIM applications, such as AutoCAD, Rhinoceros3D, SketchUp, and Revit.

title Augmented Reality Promoting Time Tunnel

summary This paper presents an Augmented Reality application intended to establish a link to site history, approaching cultural heritage issues simulating the metaphor of time tunnel. It presents an initiative to bring technology to the end user, in order to rescue the past through AR of a plaza with cultural importance that suffered intervention with time. The work was developed as an exercise of a Virtual Reality class in a Graduate Program. The class exercise involved understanding uses of AR, development of AR applications and user perception of the built environment through the augmented lenses provided by AR applications. The method proposed for the exercise was the field study developed in seven steps: AR scope definition, preliminary exploration, AR application formulation, data collection and user perception evaluation. Four AR applications were developed and evaluated: 360 panorama and an overlap image, 3D object, and video with historic information. On site, users demonstrated surprise with the experiment and no difficulty of use, however transposition to the significant record of a past time varied with AR application and simplification of implementation.

title Heuristic Optimization in Design

summary This paper presents a workflow called the ‘heuristic optimization workflow’ that integrates Octopus, a Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO) engine with Grasshopper3D, a parametric modeling tool, and multiple simulation software. It describes a process that enables the designer to integrate disparate domains via Octopus and complete a feedback loop with the developed interactive, real-time visualization tools. A retrospective design of the Bow Tower in Calgary is used as a test case to study the impact of the developed workflow and tools, as well as the impact of MOO on the performance of the solutions. The overall workflow makes MOO based results more accessible to designers and encourages a more interactive ‘heuristic’ exploration of various geometric and topological trajectories. The workflow also reduces design decision uncertainty and design cycle latency through the incorporation of a feedback loop between geometric models and their associated quantitative data. It is through the juxtaposition of extreme performing solutions that serendipity is created and the potential for better multiple performing solutions is increased.es responsive systems, which focus on the implementation of multi-objective adaptive design prototypes from sensored environments. The intention of the work is to investigate multi-objective criteria both as a material system and as a processing system by creating prototypes with structural integrity, where the thermal energy flow through the prototype, to be understood as a membrane, can be controlled and the visual transparency altered. The work shows performance based feedback systems and physical prototype models driven by information streaming, screening, and application.

summary This paper describes the development of a sentient canopy that interacts with human visitors by using its own internal motivation. Modular curiosity-based machine learning behaviour is supported by a highly distributed system of microprocessor hardware integrated within interlinked cellular arrays of sound, light, kinetic actuators and proprioreceptive sensors in a resilient physical scaffolding system. The curiosity-based system involves exploration by employing an expert system composed of archives of information from preceding behaviours, calculating potential behaviours together with locations and applications, executing behaviour and comparing result to prediction. Prototype architectural structures entitled Sentient Canopy and Sentient Chamber developed during 2015 and 2016 were developed to support this interactive behaviour, integrating new communications protocols and firmware, and a hybrid proprioreceptive system that configured new electronics with sound, light, and motion sensing capable of internal machine sensing and externally- oriented sensing for human interaction. Proprioreception was implemented by producing custom electronics serving photoresistors, pitch-sensing microphones, and accelerometers for motion and position, coupled to sound, light and motion-based actuators and additional infrared sensors designed for sensing of human gestures. This configuration provided the machine system with the ability to calculate and detect real-time behaviour and to compare this to models of behaviour predicted within scripted routines. Testbeds located at the Living Architecture Systems Group/Philip Beesley Architect Inc. (LASG/PBAI, Waterloo/Toronto), Centre for Information Technology (CITA, Copenhagen) National Academy of Sciences (NAS) in Washington DC are illustrated.

summary Since 1985 the Computer-Aided Architectural Design Futures Foundation has fostered high level discussions about the search for excellence in the built environment through the use of new technologies with an exploratory and critical perspective. In 2015, the 16th CAAD Futures Conference was held, for the first time, in South America, in the lively megalopolis of Sao Paulo, Brazil. In order to establish a connection to local issues, the theme of the conference was "The next city". The city of Sao Paulo was torn down and almost completely rebuilt twice, from the mid 1800s to the mid 1900s, evolving from a city built in rammed-earth to a city built in bricks and then from a city built in bricks to a city built in concrete. In the 21st century, with the widespread use of digital technologies both in the design and production of buildings, cities are changing even faster, in terms of layout, materials, shapes, textures, production methods and, above all, in terms of the information that is now embedded in built systems.Among the 200 abstracts received in the first phase, 64 were selected for presentation in the conference and publication in the Electronic Proceedings, either as long or short papers, after 3 tough evaluation stages. Each paper was reviewed by at least three different experts from an international committee of more than 80 highly experienced researchers. The authors come from 23 different countries. Among all papers, 10 come from Latin-American institutions, which have been usually under-represented in CAAD Futures. The 33 highest rated long papers are also being published in a printed book by Springer. For this reason, only their abstracts were included in this Electronic Proceedings, at the end of each chapter.The papers in this book have been organized under the following topics: (1) modeling, analyzing and simulating the city, (2) sustainability and performance of the built environment, (3) automated and parametric design, (4) building information modeling (BIM), (5) fabrication and materiality, and (6) shape studies. The first topic includes papers describing different uses of computation applied to the study of the urban environment. The second one represents one of the most important current issues in the study and design of the built environment. The third topic, automated and parametric design, is an established field of research that is finally becoming more available to practitioners. Fabrication has been a hot topic in CAAD conferences, and is becoming ever more popular. This new way of making design and buildings will soon start affecting the way cities look like. Finally, shape studies are an established and respected field in design computing that is traditionally discussed in CAAD conferences.

summary To improve indoor thermal environment, it is necessary to promote a lean design process, so forecasting and consensus building by experiment and numerical calculation from the design stage have become essential. Rapid advances in software and hardware allow feedback to be generated on novel design alternatives, rather than relying on simulation results based on past designs. However, this concept has not been fully verified. Therefore, this study presents an integrated design tool which consists of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Building Information Modeling (BIM). The tool was applied to the problems of an actual housing design project. Both the content of design feedback on design problems revealed through simulations in the project, and the features in the feedback process were discussed.

summary Computer-aided design tools have become an integral part of much architectural design practice, to the point where design is heavily dependent on the assistance of these tools. But current computer-aided design tools are fundamentally limited by the WIMP (windows, icons, menus, and pointer) interface, reliant on 2d input and output. Design of buildings and other 3D objects via 2D workflow is slowed by the conversions that designers must make. In this paper, we explore the potential of transformable physical design media through two design tool prototypes: Integrated spatial gesture-based direct 3D modeling and display system (InSpire), and tangible objects based massing study tool kits (CuBe). Both of these design tool prototypes allow designers to develop their design within a fully 3d environment with optical and haptic references, so that the interaction between designer and design object become much more intuitive and direct.We conclude by discussing some related subjects in the domain of HCI and argue that transformable physical design media represent a desirable solution for enhancing design experience. Architects and designers could benefit from the usage of transformable physical design media, especially during the early phases of architectural design by allowing designers to efficiently alter the topology properties.

summary Architectural form and performance are affected by the designer's graphical representation methods. Parametric CAD systems, as design and representation tools, have become ubiquitous in architectural practice and education. Literature in the area of parametric design reviews is scarce and focused within building inspection and construction coordination domains. Additionally, platforms marketed as design review tools lack basic functionality for conducting comprehensive, parametric, and performance-based reviews. We have developed a user interface prototype where geometric and non-geometric information of a Building Information Model were translated into an interactive gaming environment. The interface allows simultaneous occupation and simulation of spatial geometry, enabling the user to engage with object parameters, as well as, performance-based, perspectival, diagrammatic, and orthographic representations for total spatial and performance comprehension.

summary The pairing of CAD and GIS data creates an opportunity to connect an architectural design process more immediately with its environmental constraints. Yet the GIS data may be too overwhelmingly complex to be fully used in CAD without computer-assisted methods of highlighting relevant information. This paper reports on the implementation of an integrated environment for three-dimensional design geometrical modeling and obtaining environmental impact feedback. The project focused on enhancements to the data exchange and on the development of a related set of tools. While the technologies of CAD and GIS may rely on separate representational models,in combination they can provide a more complete view of the built and natural environment. The challenge in integration is that of bridging analytical methods and database formats used in the two technologies. Our approach is rooted in part in constraint based design methods well established in CAD (e.g., Sketchpad, Generative Components, CATIA). Within such CAD systems geometrical transformations may be intentionally constrained to help enforce some previously made design decisions. Although this current implementation modestly relates to geometrical constraints, the use of probabilistic risk values is more central to its methodology.

summary This paper studies the architectural potential of the implementation of material feedback using computer vision before and during an automated fabrication process. The combination of an industrial robot and a 3D camera is used expand the typical one-way design and fabrication process (from a digital design to a physical output), to a feedback loop, where specific material information becomes the main trigger of design decisions and fabrication processes. Several projects developed by the authors and tested during a robotic workshop aim to unveil different aspects of material feedback in architectural design, opening a discussion for the benefit and challenges of this new approach to design and fabrication.

summary Landscape architectural design problems are under-served by the current canon of computational design techniques. More investigations into modeling landscape phenomena would improve the capabilities of designers working in this field. This paper introduces some of the problems specific to the intersection of computational design and landscape architecture through a case study in generating planting plans using parametric techniques. This illustrates issues of temporality, complexity, and dynamism that distinguish land form from built form alongside the opportunities and challenges found in adapting computation to the design of natural systems.

summary This paper describes a design approach for discerning solar gain and assigning appropriate external shading devices. The approach includes a macro analysis locating where and when the building receives direct sunlight and locating desired interior daylighting; along with a micro analysis of how folded sun-shading motifs filter or block direct sunlight. The approach uses a collaborative analytical workflow with feedback from virtual and physical simulations informing design explorations. This iterative, reciprocating process is illustrated by student efforts to design shading structures for a building based on incident solar radiation. Designers begin with cutting and folding paper study models, then lasercut 2D tessellation patterns to create sculptural shading screens to be examined with a heliodon. Physical daylighting modeling reveals aesthetic opportunities to develop with parametric design. Motifs are then digitally modeled and analysed for shading effectiveness. Analysing the solar radiation of simple motifs helps beginners learn the software for subsequent urban situations. The efficacy of these simulations is discussed along with ways that the results could be interpreted to initiate design decisions for a building skin.

summary We introduce a parametric modeling method in the field of computer-aided architectural conception, which aims to produce non-standard wooden walls and envelopes with CNC machinery. This method explores the application of polygonal cellular structures (as patterns) on facade and envelope interventions for new and old projects. We innovate by bringing the 3D production environment complexity into the conception model to improve the production of manifold woodworking items by CNC (Computer Numerical Control) 3D fabrication. A recent experimentation, tests the entire workflow from parametric modeling to production of two full-scale prototypes. The results prove the range of inputs offered by the method to be functional, though it needs various improvements in order to optimize parametric modeling and digital fabrication procedures. Future research will focus on treating a wider range of joints via parametric modeling and deal with joint creation regardless wall deformation to expand the morphological approach of non-standard wooden walls design.

summary The non-standard approach, widely discussed in the past years as Architecture progressively uses alternative design methods different from the Euclidean paradigm, has allowed architects to transform the way architecture is conceived and materialized. Such evolution uses computer-aided design along with automation in production to originate the environment for the aided architectural conception field in which we present a method, in its early development stage, intended to create non-standard walls and envelopes based on cellular patterns using wood as base material. We present the results obtained from modeling and building two full-scale prototypes of non-standard wooden walls.

summary This paper researches material agencies, mechanical systems and façade designs that are able to respond to environmental changes through local interactions, inspired by biological systems. These are based on a model of distributed intelligence founded on plants and animal collectives, from which intelligent behavior emerges through simple local associations. Biological collective systems integrate material form and responsiveness and have the potential to inform new architectural and engineering strategies. The design approach of this research is based on a data-driven methodology spanning from design inception to simulation and physical modeling. Data-driven models, common in the fields of natural science, offer a method to generate and test a multiplicity of responsive solutions. The driving concepts are three types of evolutionary adaptation: flexibility, acclimation, and learning. The proposed façade system is a responsive textile shading structure which uses integrated actuators that moderate their local environments through simple interactions with their immediate neighbors. Computational techniques coupled to material logics create an integral design framework leading to heterogeneous environmental and structural conditions, producing local responses to environmental stimuli and ultimately effective performance of the whole system.

summary The increased proliferation of computational tools for building performance evaluation during conceptual design has led to a fundamental transformation in architectural education over the past decade. Morphological exploration and form-finding in the studio setting now gets more and more enriched by environmental performance feedback that allows students to test their design in unprecedented ways. This paper contextualises the underlying developments leading to this changed context that results in greater convergence of information from various software applications, facilitated via digital means. The author presents the process and the outcomes of a recent architectural design studio as an example of how this convergence unfolds in an academic setting. The studio example highlights how the fluid interaction between parametric design techniques and environmental performance feedback enriches the students’ abilities to engage with their design processes in innovative ways.

summary Shifting from head-mounted display to smart devices, there is a new context for augmented reality and its applications. This paper describes a project aiming to re-examine factors of smart-device-based augmented reality and its applications as a tool to support collaborative design and communication, leading to a redefinition of augmented itself and a theoretical framework based on the relationship between virtual content, screen and the body.
