summary Architectural form and performance are affected by the designer's graphical representation methods. Parametric CAD systems, as design and representation tools, have become ubiquitous in architectural practice and education. Literature in the area of parametric design reviews is scarce and focused within building inspection and construction coordination domains. Additionally, platforms marketed as design review tools lack basic functionality for conducting comprehensive, parametric, and performance-based reviews. We have developed a user interface prototype where geometric and non-geometric information of a Building Information Model were translated into an interactive gaming environment. The interface allows simultaneous occupation and simulation of spatial geometry, enabling the user to engage with object parameters, as well as, performance-based, perspectival, diagrammatic, and orthographic representations for total spatial and performance comprehension.

title Adapting Cellular Automata as Architectural Design Tools

summary In this paper we examine the adaptations cellular automata (CA) are typically subjected to when they are applied to architectural designing. We argue that, despite a number of earlier studies that portrayed CA as generic generative design tools, the transition from generic CA to specific design tools is not yet well understood. To describe this transition, we first examine this aspect in a number of previous studies relating CA to architectural design. In a following detailed analysis of an applied design case study, we trace similarities between findings made in the literature review to findings made in the case study and extend them with additional observations. We conclude with a summary of challenges and opportunities met by architectural designers employing and developing CA for design purposes.

summary This work aims to review the literature on digital fabrication verifying the Brazilian status on a general view. Concerning the methodology, the research was carried out from 2004 to 2014 analyzing three aspects: 1. the situational context of digital fabrication; 2. digital fabrication in the design process; 3. the Brazilian status. The findings revealed the use of digital fabrication is mainly focused on the design process. Also, the most common objects in the research are the development of models, furniture and pavilions. Moreover, digital fabrication is increasingly being inserted in the syllabus of architecture schools. Brazil strikes in object production both in quantities and interests throughout the country.

summary Researches about different processes of representation in architectural design allows the acknowledgment about their specificities regarding to potential and limitations. This study aims to investigate the possible interfaces between parametric modeling and other representation media, in order to understand its introduction into design process and its integration with other tools. The methodology consist of literature review to select different media, including sketching, architectural model, BIM and computer-aided manufacturing. As a result, the study identified which processes would be able to assist parametric modeling and suggested possible interfaces between the presented tools.

summary This chapter provides a panorama of the current state of computationally controlled dynamic facades through a literature review and a survey of contemporary projects. This was completed with an underlying interest in understanding how innovative design solutions with the capacity to ‘react to’ and/or ‘interact with’ the varying states of climatic conditions have been developed. An analysis of these projects was conducted, and led to the identification of tendencies, which were subsequently synthesized and articulated. While most classifications are limited to describing the movement or structure needed to achieve morphological transformation, an important recommendation is to also consider control as a determining factor. For this reason, the culmination of the investigation presented here is a proposal for a classification structure of dynamic facades, developed according to the functional modus operandi of each structure in terms of movement and control.

summary Visually impermeable boundaries growth of residential multifamily buildings in Boa Viagem (Recife-BR) increases urban environment of buildings that ignore streets and pedestrians. Minimizing it, without disturbing the private use, this work consists in modelled walls defined by cobogós (typical hollow elements of the region), manipulated to guarantee some privacy and visual permeability at the same time. With Space Syntax tools and support, part of the neighborhood is analyzed both in its actual configuration, and after the post-supposed interventions. Analysis supported the design work decisions, making increase of visual range in public spaces possible, as a way of stimulate the urbanity.

title From representational to parametric and algorithmic interactions: A panorama of Digital Architectural Design teaching in Latin America

summary This study focuses on the context of graphic representation technologies and digital design on Architectural teaching in Latin America. From categories proposed by Oxman and Kotnik and through a mapping study framed by a systematic review in CumInCAD database, it is presented a panorama of the state-of-art of the digital design on Architectural teaching in the region, between 2006 and 2015. The results suggest a context of coexistence of representational interaction and parametric interaction, as well as a transition from one to another and the emergence of the first experiments in algorithmic interaction. As this mapping shows an ongoing movement toward Digital Architectural Design in Latin America in the last decade, and points out its dynamics in space in time, it could contribute to strengthen a crowdthinking network on this issue in the region and with other continents.

summary Multi-criteria optimisation searches by a genetic algorithm define a Pareto optimal front, a state in which one objective can only be improved at the expense of another. But optimisation is not a search for the best but for better - the goal is to improve performance by trading-off conflicting criteria or objectives. A live case study is the focus of this search with parameters behaving as genes and objectives as the environmental shapers of the phenotype. The genetic algorithm is an effective and powerful tool in the computational design tool box, one which can improve the design process and the fitness of its outcomes.

summary This paper is a critical review on advantages and disadvantages of contemporary digital architecture, in retrospect to Vladimir Shukhov's design techniques, applied in the early 20th century. After investigating Shukhov's structural systems, this paper explores the relationship between performance and form, questioning the necessity of high-complexity structures. It will present unpublished archive material of his early work and stimulate a valuable discussion by comparing it with contemporary projects designed by renowned architects. The study on Shukhov focuses on his tessellation method of double-curved surfaces using simple standardized elements. The study of present digital approaches revolves around leading architects using computational tools (e.g. Foster and Partners, Buro Happold and Arup), who have materialized high complexity structures composed by irregular units. Our findings highlight advantages and disadvantages of contemporary computational approaches.

title Embodied Emotions: Observations and Experiments in Architecture and Corporeality

summary This thesis is dedicated to the topic of the relationship between the Body and Architecture, in particular regarding the contemporary “embodied mind” theory. It includes a theoretical review on the topic based on the study of the different ways Architecture has followed the transformations that the views on the Body have endured throughout Western history, under the evolution and influence of different disciplines such as philosophy, technology, science, religion and art. Within this context, the thesis proposes a methodology based on performance arts, which explores the use of embodied practices in design education. Such a methodology aimed at testing how it is possible to influence users’ emotions using architectural space. The thesis argues that this can be achieved through a process of empathy between the users’ body and architectural space. To support this claim, the thesis presents a set of experiments undertaken in the context of architectural teaching. The results of such experiments were evaluated through the analysis of video and photo documentation, as well as through quantitative and qualitative data collected using emotion measurement tools and questionnaires, respectively.

summary The paper presents results of a research conducted in 2015 and 2016 at Lodz University of Technology. It proposes a purpose and context fit approach towards the automation of urban data generation based on GIS tools and New Urbanism typologies. First, background studies of methods applied in urban morphology analysis are revealed. Form-Based Code planning, and subsequently Transect-Based Code are taken into account. Then, selected examples from literature are described and discussed. Finally, the research study is presented and the outcomes compared with more traditional methodology.

summary In this paper, we review and extend the idea of Alexander’s “pattern language”, especially from the viewpoints of complexity theories, information systems, and human-computer interaction, to explore spatial cognition-based design representations for “intelligent and adaptive/interactive environment” in architecture and urban planning. We propose a theoretic framework of design patterns “with spatial information processing”, and attempt to incorporate state-of-the-art computational methods of information visualization/visual analytics into the conventional CAAD approaches. Focused on the spatial-semantic analytics, together with abstract syntactic pattern representation, by using “spatial-semantic aware” graph grammar formalization, i.e., Spatial Graph Grammars (SGG), the relevant models, algorithms and tool are proposed. We testify our theoretic framework and computational tool VEGGIE (a Visual Environment of Graph Grammar Induction Engineering) by using actual architectural design works (spatial layout exemplars of a small office building and the three house projects by Frank Lloyd Wright) as study cases, so as to demonstrate our proposed approach for practical applications. The results are discussed and further research is suggested.

summary Interactive Architecture and Responsive Architecture are provocative fields of investigation and have potentially disruptive and far reaching effects for architecture. However it can be argued that these fields haven’t been developed as a direct response to previously identified architectural demands. Instead, they have risen as consequence of new technology availability, with ad hoc discussions in the context of the built environment. In order to test this hypothesis, 229 publications were examined and narrowed down to 77 papers and 41 design projects, which were systematically analyzed. The primary objective of this investigation is to understand Interactive Architecture’s development with regard to justification. This understanding provides us with the basis to speculate on the possibly expanding introduction of extraneous technological solutions to the discipline of architecture. The research findings indicate a mismatch between theoretical discourse and projects being developed in those fields. They also describe the current state of Interactive Architecture research.

summary This paper introduces a counter-mapping attempt augmented by a Geoweb 2.0 platform in the context of two Belgian inner-city neighborhoods. The two aims of this project were to build a platform for the collective construction of a better understanding this dynamic super-diverse arrival environment and bring the various qualities and aspects of these super-diverse urban neighborhoods to foreground. In this study we report on the first results of this project which took place in Ghent and Brussels in 2014. Around 300 architecture students registered, interpreted and geocoded visible signs along preconceived tracks by means of a Geoweb 2.0 platform. Through field observations and interviews, the students created dynamic and interactive maps. We found that the large-scale mapping through Geoweb 2.0 makes it possible to discern different layers of use in arrival neighborhoods. These layers referred to different population groups which continuously have to negotiate each other's presence. Furthermore, the platform created the possibility to effectively and efficiently combine student fieldwork with online and offline lectures and offered students the opportunity to comment on, peer-review and learn from each other's insights. The findings will serve as an alternative information resource in the forthcoming Master's thesis graduation design studio which will be led by the first author.

The motivation for this study arises from the observation of the growth of the participation of students with disabilities in distance learning courses, the projection of increased development of learning objects and multimedia for use in these courses, therefore, requiring care for accessibility.The information gathered reveal thoughts about student’s experience and have resulted in recommendations and proposals with a view to enhancing inclusion.

summary The paper presents the initial results of a study that examines the potential of using the concept of topological interlocking as a structural and organizational mechanism for architecture in general, and for building façades in particular. The paper opens with a review of existing research on the notion of topological interlocking. It then presents a catalogue that characterizes the various types of topological interlocking systems and compares the potential of these types to be employed in architectural design. This is followed by a discussion regarding the results of fabrication experiments that examine the specific types, which appear to have the best potential for architectural design.

summary This work aims to investigate the concept of smart city within the Internet of Things (IoT), and analyses possible transformations of urban space in areas of surveillance and control. As already seen regularly in the media, surveillance and control of data on the internet is a problem that affects personal freedom. If similar surveillance system is applied in the Internet of Things, where people, objects and environments are interconnected, exchanging a huge volume of data, the problem substantially increases due the possibility of more control over various aspects of people's lives. The purpose of this paper is to do a critical reflection about the consequences of the smart city regarding the public space and privacy of the inhabitants.
