summary Reviewing the current research trends in robotic fabrication around the world, the trajectory promises new opportunities for innovation in Architecture and the possible redefinition of the role of the Architect in the industry itself. New entrepreneurial, innovative start-ups are popping up everywhere challenging the traditional model of the architect. However, it also poses new questions and challenges in the education of the architect today. What are the appropriate pedagogical methods to instill enthusiasm for new technologies, materials, and craft? How do we avoid the pure application of pre-set tools, such as the use of the laser cutter has become, which in many schools around the world has caused problems rather than solving problems? How do we teach students to invent their tools especially in a society that doesn't have a strong background in the making? The primary focus of this paper is on how architectural CAAD/ CAM education through the use of robotic fabrication can enhance student's understanding, passion and knowledge of materiality, technology, and craftsmanship. The paper is based on the pedagogical set-up and method of an M. Arch I studio that was taught by the author in fall 2016 with the focus on robotic fabrication, materiality, traditional timber construction systems, tool design and digital and physical craftsmanship.

summary MOLIT authorised Indoor Spatial Information as Basic spa- tial information in 2013. It became a legal evidence for constructing and managing Indoor Spatial Information. Although it has a little ad- vantage to utilise as service level that Indoor Spatial Information by laser scan or measurement, it has a lot of problems such as consuming many resources, requiring additional progresses for inputting Object Information. In conclusion, it is inefficient to utilise for the mainte- nance and domestic AEC/FM field. The purposes of this study is to output Indoor Spatial Information by operating IFC model which based on open BIM and to improve availability of Indoor Spatial In- formation with data visualisation. The open-sources of IFC Exporter, an inner program of Revit, is used to output Indoor Spatial Infor- mation. Directs 3D Library is also operated to visualise Indoor Spatial Information. It is possible to inter-operate between XML format and the objects of Indoor Spatial Information. It can be utilised in various field as well. For example COBie linkage in facility management, construction of geo-database using air-photogrammetry of UA V , the simulation of large-scale military operations and the simulation of large-scale evacuation. The method that is purposed in this study has outstanding advantages such as conformance with national spatial in- formation policy, high level of interoperability as indoor spatial in- formation objects based on IFC, convenience of editing information, light level of data and simplifying progress of producing information.

summary In building information modelling (BIM), the amount of in- formation increased and architectural design processes became more complex as projects expand. This is because while a collaboration en- vironment is important for smooth communication among experts, this has not been realised because of unclassified file synchronisation and permission settings among team members. Therefore, this study aims to support cooperation in BIM modelling projects by synchronising BIM data from different computers and rendering BIM project man- agement easier by providing a BIM model viewer and data through the Web. The proposed technology, which is a construction project- type, purpose-tailored browsing technology, provides BIM infor- mation related to construction environments and planning processes only to the relevant experts.

summary New lighting technologies may fulfill a need for holistic design methods by offering opportunities for both architects and engineers to apply methods and knowledge from media technology that combine daylight and interactive light, in order to complement and deepen an understanding of context. The framework combines daylight and interactive light and includes human needs analysis, spatial understanding, qualitative analysis, qualitative tests and visual assessments. A transdisciplinary model termed the "Architectural Experiment" is applied in a specific case by combining serial, parallel and iterative processes which include contextual analysis, architectural design, simulation, C++ programming, implementation of the dynamic smart-film diffuser, programming of voltage ranges on Arduino boards, rapid prototype construction and lighting technology.

summary The topic "Crowdthinking" reveals the inquiries of researchers about collaborative work, distributed intelligence and collective research. The call focuses on transdisciplinary thinking as a construct based on multiplicity and diversity. All these topics are essential not only in the field of design and architecture, but also in emerging areas of human sciences and arts . Currently, the collaborative design is considered one of the key bases for change in the city and society. In its genesis, it manifests the notion that the world around us is inadequate for many of the needs of the society and from that design can be collectively improved. Such collective research, by combining distributed intelligence, sustainable social development, design cutting edge research, theories and computational strategies, generates a research partnership based on participation and distributed cognition of complex problems. This call proposes an approach in which the results of the experiences can build a model, define or apply axioms and lead to applications. It also looks for emerging conjectures about the process, the creation of computer models and the behaviour of the resulting designs. On the other hand, the need to find solutions that improve the quality of life for the community and sustainable development includes concerns about the integration of the physical and cultural context of cities, mass education and the inclusion of parametric design, digital manufacturing and digital prototyping, and BIM as a system that organizes and ensures the correspondence between the physical urban design and sustainable archetypes. These are some of the concerns in which technology has been contributing to improve the design process by integrating information. This integration optimizes resources and enables the various project professionals to work on the same model, run simulations, improve materializations and evaluate massive amount of data. Projects with greater social and environmental responsibility can be achieved adopting into the teaching and practice this new way of design that anticipates an extensive exchange that wilt foster self-evaluation and reformulation of educational paradigms.

summary This research investigates the adequacy of the contemporary professional formation to professional practice in the construction market. The work investigates the teaching of building and structures design in schools of architecture and civil engineering in Belo Horizonte. There is evidence that the use of contemporary information technology such as BIM (Building Information Modeling) enables integrated teaching of architecture and engineering, allowing simultaneous work. The hypothesis is that there is a mismatch between contemporary teaching and practice and methodological changes seeking simultaneous practice, respond adequately to contemporary assumptions of learning. The confirmation of this hypothesis subsidizes developments for future research.

summary With the development of advance fabrication, several digi- tal fabrication approaches have been developed. These approaches en- able better form exploration than the conventional manufacturing pro- cess. But, the built examples mostly rely on advance machinery which was not familiar or available in developed country where construction workers are still abundant. Meanwhile, much knowledge gathers in the field practice. This research is aimed to explore an alternative con- struction workflow and method with the combination of mass custom- ization and conventional construction method and to propose the structure system that emphasized this alternative workflow and meth- od. Lattice structure was proposed. The conventional construction method was used in the struts production and mass customization method, laser cutting, and was used for connection production. The algorithmic process was used mainly for data mining, details design, and component production. The backtracking was needed to be pre- dicted and addressed previously. Considerations that will be needed to be tested by further example are on the transition from the digital pro- cess to the manual process. Next research could be for analysing the other engineering aspect for this prototype and suggesting other struc- tural system with more optimal combination of conventional construc- tion and mass customization.

summary This paper explains a method will be used during a workshop for constructing complex-curved geometry with quad edge panels. In this workshop, we demonstrate that quad-edge mesh data structure can efficiently be used to construct complex large shapes. With hands-on experiments, we will show a vast variety of shapes can be constructed using square, rectangular, parallelogram and extruded-line shaped panels. In addition, using a system we have recently developed to unfold polygonal mesh, we will demonstrate how desired shapes can be constructed by using laser-cut quadrilateral panels. This approach is particularly suitable to construct complicated sculptural and architectural shapes from anisotropic materials that can only be bended in one direction.

summary This paper presents the prototyping of a facilitating device for photogrammetric 3D acquisition with smartphones. It aims to deliver basic photogrammetry knowledge and a low-cost do-it-yourself alternative to commercial 3D scanning systems, consisting of interlocked laser cut parts and free third-party software. The proposed device was tested, and the resulting 3D model was qualitatively compared to those obtained by a handheld photogrammetry approach, a conoscopic laser scanning device, and a portable structured-light scanning device. The proposed device provides camera stabilization and homogenous distribution of image acquisition which result in improved 3D reconstruction quality, compared to a handheld approach

summary This article describes the methods of an inclusive design project developed by FACAMP’s NIEDA , as demanded by the UNICAMP Science Museum (Brazil). The objective was to create a multi-sensorial interface that would be capable of describing the process of energy generation and distribution in a hydro-power plant. It began with a scheme based on images and a narration was built out of audible and tactile systems so that it would be comprehensible for the blind public as well, without compromising the aesthetic and informative aspects. It also reveals the challenge of combining the use of multiple technological resources, such as 3D printing and laser cutting.

summary Surveying tools such as laser scanning and photogrammetry are increasingly accessible, providing opportunities as digital mediators to enhance our understanding of architectural heritage. Here we discuss and compare the use of both techniques as starting points to analyse medieval vaults at two sites in England: Chester Cathedral and Exeter Cathedral. The project is inspired by the work of Robert Willis, a Victorian scholar who hypothesised how medieval vaults were designed and constructed; however, he did not have sufficient survey data to fully prove his theories. We will discuss the accuracy of each digital survey method in relation to our research that occurred at two distinct scales: the overall geometry of vault rib arcs where vault bays were several metres in length and width, as well as more detailed investigations of individual rib profiles where millimetre accuracy is required. We will compare laser scanning with photogrammetry in terms of their methodological and practical applications to architectural heritage in the particular context of medieval vault design, in order to assess the relative merits of each and aid decision-making as to which method should be used in specific circumstances.

summary This paper investigates the potential of behavioral construction strategies for architectural production through the design and robotic fabrication of three-dimensional woven structures inspired by the behavioral fabrication logic used by the weaverbird during the construction of its nest. Initial research development led to the design of an adaptive robotic fabrication framework composed of an online agent-based system, a custom weaving end-effector and a coordinated sensing strategy utilizing 3D scanning.The outcome of the behavioral weaving process could not be predetermined a priori in a digital model, but rather emerged out of the negotiation among design intentions, fabrication constraints, performance criteria, material behaviors and specific site conditions. The key components of the system and their role in the fabrication process are presented both theoretically and technically, while the project serves as a case study of a robotic production method envisioned as a soft system: a flexible and adaptable framework in which the moment of design unfolds simultaneously with fabrication, informed by a constant flow of sensory information.

summary Working with CNC routers and robots is widely used in architecture and fabrication. Our paper describes ways to use these tools more intuitively yet accurately and without a profound knowledge. We have developed a workshop format, in which even inexperienced participants are able to quickly start working with these tools by shaping the non-rigid material sand. Various production methods and tools are incorporated such as "manual", "gestural", "CNC" and "robotic" to create various 3D forms which are captured by methods like 3D scanning, vacuum forming or glueing.

summary Human capabilities in architecture-scaled fabrication have the potential of being a driving force in both design and construction processes. However, while intuitive and flexible, humans are still often seen as being relatively slow, weak, and lacking the exacting precision necessary for structurally stable large-scale outputs—thus, hands-on involvement in on-site fabrication is typically kept at a minimum. Moreover, with increasingly advanced computational tools and robots in architectural contexts, the perfection and speed of production cannot be rivaled. Yet, these methods are generally non-engaging and do not necessarily require a skilled labor workforce, bringing to question the role of the craftsman in the digital age. This paper was developed with the focus of leveraging human adaptability and tendencies in the design and fabrication process, while using computational tools as a means of support. The presented setup consists of (i) a networked scanning and application of human movements and human on-site positioning, (ii) a lightweight and fast-drying extruded composite material, (iii) a handheld “smart” tool, and (iv) a structurally optimized generative form via an iterative feedback system. By redistributing the roles and interactions of humans and machines, the hybridized method makes use of the inherently intuitive yet imprecise qualities of humans, while maximizing the precision and optimization capabilities afforded by computational tools—thus incorporating what is traditionally seen as “human error” into a dynamically engaging and evolving design and fabrication process. The interdisciplinary approach was realized through the collaboration of structural engineering, architecture, and computer science laboratories.

summary This proceeding presents the process and outputs of a collaborative workshop which was held between Yaºar University in Turkey and Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. The aim of the workshop was to observe the educational potentials of a custom-made formwork device towards teaching CAD/CAM to architecture students. This flexible formwork, which we call FlexiMold, is a hybrid device that is used manually by following computerized numeric information. The students designed an architectural object which has a complex shape and used this formwork to fabricate it in actual scale. We present the workshop objectives, process and outcomes in this proceeding.

summary By enabling BIM technology, a building can be represented by a set of objects that carry detailed information about how they are constructed and also capture the relationship with other objects in the building model. Smart BIM objects can be classified as specific com- ponents encapsulating typical building rules and relations that can be predicted and defined by a few parameters and constraints. A frame- work is developed to show how a smart BIM object is developed. This paper presents the method of developing smart BIM object capable of better-informing design decision. To demonstrate the usefulness of smart BIM objects, a cloud BIM object library is developed and tested by academia and industry.

summary This article delineates the process of developing the project "Urbanimals" - an interactive installation designed and realised in Bristol, UK, in 2015. As the case study research, it draws attention to the difficulties in designing interactive structures in urban spaces - from an architects' idea to a construction stage. There are four areas that are being investigated: (1) Modelling interactions, (2) Negotiating locations and logistics, (3) Developing hardware and (4) Performing the on-site observations. The project draws from the idea of Smart City (SC) as the concept of the urban environment with a certain level of responsiveness through implementing a technology-driven matter that expands city offer perceivable, but gentle and not hindering way. It highlights the possible applications of projection technology and the utilisation of the 3D modelling software which provides complex tools for creating animations, movements and interactions with future users. The article gives clues how to design more engaging interactions and how to deal with implementing them in public realm.

summary Complexity-grounded paradigms and self-organization based strategies promise enormous potential when channeled in a design process, but their current stage of development (while delivering groundbreaking results in recent years) hasn't significantly impacted yet the widespread architectural practice. Still, the tendency (in the development of technology and society) is clearly towards an increase in complexity and distributed intelligence, henceforth it is of primary importance to adopt a design approach that allows the harnessing of such potential and convey it in the creation of outcomes that favor a richer and heterogeneous ecological entanglement. To tap this kind of potential in an open-ended process requires a design approach that re-defines the distribution of control, choices and information throughout the whole process (including materials and fabrication processes).The paper explores the possibility of such design approach in the territory that links education and research through a series of Master Thesis developed at the University of Bologna and comparing them to other case studies developed worldwide.
