summary In this paper we present an outline of a newly started project to develop a tool which connects BIM to a manufacturing technique like 3D printing. First we will look some promising manufacturing techniques. We will design a small dwelling and export it into a BIM, from which we will extract our data to generate the path the nozzle has to follow. The chosen path is constrained by the material properties, the design and speed of the nozzle. To validate the system we develop a small VR tool in which we mimic a manufacturing tool.

summary Design is one of the basic skills of every engineer. However until now design is only seen as a core course in Architecture studies and lately in Industrial Engineering studies. This paper reports about the development of a design course for all departments of a typical technical university. After a short overview of design teaching tradition, an inventory is presented of the different interpretation of design by the various departments. The course development is presented over two periods: 2012-2014, and 2014-2015. In between a major change was conducted. The course learning goals and student evaluations are presented. In the discussion we reflect on fundamental and practical problems that occur in design teaching for such a wide audience. Finally we draw conclusions on the changing role of design what is needed to give design the same status as mathematics in a technical curriculum.

summary This research explores the use of large-scale 3D Printing techniques in architecture and structural design. First we will analyse the various methods in large-scale 3D printing in order to choose the method with the most potential to be used to build large-scale residential buildings in the Netherlands. Then we will investigate the properties of this 3D printing technique to determine the new building process, related to building with a 3D Concrete Printer. The freedom in movement of the printer and the properties of the concrete mixture used to print will form the guidelines in the creation of a design language in which both material costs and labour costs are reduced to a minimum. The design language is later applied on the design of a house, which shows the impact 3D Concrete Printing should have on the current boundaries in architecture and structural design.

summary The goal of this research is to see what the influence is of reducing the energy consumption on the building layout. It is our expectation that increasing the energy reduction of buildings cannot continues without changing the layout of the building and/ or the layout f the neighborhood. During our experiments we noticed a strange phenomenon which contradicts our assumption. This paper is about the strange phenomenon we encounter and why it happened.

summary A traditional design studio is organized round tutors who give the students an assignment, more precisely a design problem which the students have to solve in 12 weeks. Since 2006 we run at our University a design studio which is focused on a new way of thinking in and about architecture. In many aspects the organization differs greatly from the more traditional organized design studios. In the first part of the paper we will discuss the pedagogical organization of ‘our’ studio and how this new way of generative design is used in architectural training. In the second part we will show and discuss some students work, one project will be discussed in more detail. Finally, we will summarize our experience with this design studio and provide some guidelines for successful implementing Generative Design in architectural design teaching.

summary In this paper we present an outline of a newly started project to develop a city generator for use in urban planning. The aim of the project is to develop a rule-based system which is capable of generation lookalike cities. Lookalike cities are cities which resemble real life cities without being an exact copy of it. A city consists of several zones; each zone has it own identity. In order to generate lookalike cities, these zone-identities need to be capture into rules which the system can ‘read’.
