title Meta-Lab: programação de um laboratório interativo [Metal-Lab: the programming of an interactive lab]
source SIGraDi 2016 [Proceedings of the 20th Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISBN: 978-956-7051-86-1] Argentina, Buenos Aires 9 - 11 November 2016, pp.769-775
summary Here we discuss the technological and theoretical issues that conform the restructuring proposal of the Computer Laboratory of Escola de Arquitetura e Urbanismo da UFMG, reconfiguring it in what we call “Meta-Lab”: a space composed of programmable modules that make up the so called Sistema Hidra(!), a system structured in three levels (sensory, processor and actuator level) which receives environmental information via sensors, processes these information and changes the environment using actuators. We will address in more detail the processing level, a fundamental layer for enabling the implementation of “interactive permanency” through continuous reprogramming of interactions in Meta-Lab.

title A Grammar for Shelters - An exploration of rule-based designs in prefabricated and modular shelters.
source Thompson, Emine Mine (ed.), Fusion - Proceedings of the 32nd eCAADe Conference - Volume 2, Department of Architecture and Built Environment, Faculty of Engineering and Environment, Newcastle upon Tyne, England, UK, 10-12 September 2014, pp. 327-336
summary This work explores the possible use of the shape grammar formalism in generating small/medium sized dwellings or shelters as a possible and effective solution for shelter shortages that usually follows in the wake of a natural disaster. The shelters are generated using a set of pre-fabricated elements that add up to form a coherent and functional dwelling. The grammar exemplified here, being a shape grammar, deals specially with generating the underlying functional diagram and the floor plan of one possible solution based on a set of typologies design a priori.

title Hidra System(!) in the tension between Internet of Things and Virtual Reality: programming meta-objects
source SIGraDi 2018 [Proceedings of the 22nd Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISSN: 2318-6968] Brazil, São Carlos 7 - 9 November 2018, pp. 908-913
summary We will characterize the relationship between Internet of Things (IOT) and Virtual Reality (VR) as the tension between analog and digital domains, organized by several interfaces specifically developed for this study, during de course Interactive Architecture at the Architecture School - UFMG. These interfaces, referred here as programmable meta-objects (MOPs), recombine themselves to form an environment where inputs and outputs of each MOP are made available to other networked MOPs through the Hydra System (!). These MOPs can have both a physical existence (object present in physical space) and a "virtual" existence (it exists in the Virtual Reality environment).

title Permeability Regimes between Man and Interactive Spaces
source Stouffs, Rudi and Sariyildiz, Sevil (eds.), Computation and Performance – Proceedings of the 31st eCAADe Conference – Volume 1, Faculty of Architecture, Delft University of Technology, Delft, The Netherlands, 18-20 September 2013, pp. 449-457
summary In this paper we will present the permeability regimes: concepts conceived to contribute with the understanding of the new roles and necessary skills for the architect and designer to design performative and interactive spaces. This contribution, as will be shown here, is based on theoretical and empirical bases that will address a specific context: the methods for introducing and making tangible the relation between information, human and space for architecture students. Therefore, we will describe the dynamics of an interactive installation developed by undergraduate students, relating it to the permeability regimes.

title Carioca urban waters: digital representations
source SIGraDi 2005 - [Proceedings of the 9th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Lima - Peru 21-24 november 2005, vol. 2, pp. 535-539
summary The main objective of this paper is to discuss the value of digital graphic representation as a tool to display research findings in Landscape Architecture and Urban Design. This is discussed through the presentation of a web site named Águas Urbanas Cariocas. The paper, after briefly presenting the research context, explains the process of the making of the site, highlighting its main aspects. It concludes arguing the value of graphic representation as one of the ways of interacting different knowledges. [Full paper in Portuguese]

title Regimes de permeabilidade entre o humano e os meios digitais e a tensão entre o digital e o analógico em processos de criação em Arquitetura [Regimes of permeability between human and digital media and the tension between digital and analogical in creative processes in Architecture]
source SIGraDi 2012 [Proceedings of the 16th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Brasil - Fortaleza 13-16 November 2012, pp. 69-73
summary This article intends to introduce the concept of regimes of permeability (mirroring, transparency and crossing) between man and digital machine as a framework for understanding the relation between analogical and digital and that is also present in computer mediated creative processes in Architecture. These regimes are based in the relation between the concepts information and transduction. Finally, it will be described an experiment where an interface was created relating to the regimes of permeability.

title Do we still need CAVEs?
source Sousa, JP, Xavier, JP and Castro Henriques, G (eds.), Architecture in the Age of the 4th Industrial Revolution - Proceedings of the 37th eCAADe and 23rd SIGraDi Conference - Volume 3, University of Porto, Porto, Portugal, 11-13 September 2019, pp. 133-142
summary This paper discusses the relevance of CAVE systems in comparison with virtual and augmented reality head-mounted displays in terms of immersion experience, costs, maintenance, ease to use, interactivity, and social interaction. It is based on a comparative study of a systematic literature review comprising the works available at CumInCAD and IEEE databases in the period from 1998-2018, and empirical data from technical visits made to five CAVEs in Europe. The discussion seeks to cover the limits of each technology and questions the need for CAVEs nowadays.

title Use of a WiFi Location Estimation Service as a Tool for Presenting Real Time Information During a River Cruise
source FUTURE CITIES [28th eCAADe Conference Proceedings / ISBN 978-0-9541183-9-6] ETH Zurich (Switzerland) 15-18 September 2010, pp.557-564
summary This paper highlights the use of ubiquitous technology to effectively enable location estimation in a system that promotes the display of surrounding information during a sightseeing cruise. The proposed system stands on the applicability of WiFi signal strength to grasp current location and on the use of web-tagged place information on the contents of riverfront places and its revival processes. The effectiveness of system in both technical and social aspects was verified promoting a river cruise in downtown Osaka in cooperation with volunteer citizens, experts and a cruise company. The accuracy provided by the WiFi location estimation presented some failures at certain points but was satisfactory enough to guarantee the display of nearby information at certain level. The proposed web navigation was testified positive by respondents, although additional adjustments of its design and improvements of the WiFi server were pointed out as necessary steps.
