summary The supremacy of the digital means of representation and communication and the resulting shift of the manual means in the field of design and architecture, have engendered multiple opinions and literature. They focus and analyze the virtues and risks, the losses and substitutions, and the different expressive, productive and conceptual results of their leading role in the creative process. Furthermore, if we consider both as two extremes, apparently opposed, a broad panorama of combinations and additions are produced by the emerging group of hybrid practices. This motivated the development of a research project in the Universidad Nacional del Litoral de Santa Fe, Argentina, under the Program CAI+D 2000 dealing with Design and the Analog – Digital Means. From this project emerged a collection of conceptual speculations and experimentations in the extended field of representation, extended by the incorporation of new means and hybridations, searching for new parameters and methods for professional training and practice. summary ¿Estamos presenciando un nuevo paradigma hacia otra forma de concebir la matemática?. El presente ensayo pretende indagar, a través del análisis y discusiones sobre diferentes obras literarias, cinematográficas y proyectos arquitectónicos, clásicos y contemporáneos, la relación entre la arquitectura y la literatura a partir de las estructuras matemáticas que los sustentan y cómo estas se han modificado o evolucionado a partir de los cambios tecnológicos de las últimas décadas. Relacionaremos la literatura y la arquitectura contemporánea pos revolución digital, con sus propiedades de nolinealidad y de fragmentación. Nuestra línea de investigación se centra en cuáles pueden ser las aportaciones esencialmente nuevas de la cultura digital a la producción de la arquitectura y la literatura, partiendo de su base estructural. La era informática trae con ella implicaciones que desestabilizan los conceptos tradicionales de espacio y tiempo. Nos preguntamos cuáles son los cambios en las estructuras textuales a partir de la era digital, cuáles son las nuevas estructuras geométricas, cómo influyen estas nuevas geometrías en la arquitectura, en el cine y en la literatura, en esta era de la información y qué rol ocupa la matemática en este cambio. El desarrollo de las ciencias contemporánea ha generado teorías que transforman nuestro conocimiento del universo. Caos, Teoría de la complejidad, Fractales son términos que caracterizan estos conceptos. En arquitectura estas teorías han tenido importancia en la producción de arquitectura "no-lineal" por medio de el uso de computadoras, especialmente en trabajos de arquitectos como Frank Gehry, Zevi Hecker, Greg Lynn, ARM y O.C.E.A.N UK, entre otros. En esta época informatizada la relación de la arquitectura con las demás ciencias (como la física y la matemática), con otros códigos como el lenguaje (por ejemplo en la narración) y con los límites del pensamiento filosófico, pueden hallarse hoy, tanto en el repertorio del deconstructivismo, en el repertorio “minimalista”, como en las abstracciones de los jóvenes nacidos con la computadora, que emulan cintas de Moebius, topologías “no euclideanas”, “estructuras líquidas” o ya en el campo de la literatura formas virtuales como en Calvino o dimensiones paralelas, bifurcadas, etc. como en Cortázar o Borges. Sin embargo, podemos preguntarnos si esta proliferación exuberante es el desarrollo de un organismo sólidamente construido, que adquiere cada día más cohesión y unidad en su propio crecimiento o si, por el contrario, no es más que el signo exterior de una tendencia a un fraccionamiento cada vez mayor, debido a la naturaleza misma de las matemáticas y si éstas no se estarán convirtiendo en una torre de Babel de disciplinas autónomas, aisladas unas de otras, tanto en sus principios como en sus métodos e incluso en su lenguaje. En una palabra, hoy, en esta tendencia, ¿estamos presenciando un nuevo paradigma hacia otra forma de concebir la matemática?.

summary Automation and robotics are increasingly penetrating all types of industries in developed countries including architecture, i.e., products and services related to architectural practice. Therefore, more than ever, architects, designers and artists are interested in developing computational thinking skills to be able to integrate more functionality into their creations and take direct control of their fabrication. But what can a small school of architecture in Latin America do to prevent the deskilling of its graduates and, instead, create new labor opportunities for them abroad. Third-year students integrate physical computing with visual programming in an active learning environment to develop free proposals.

summary Tomorrow’s architects will need to deal more confidently and skillfully with scientific and technological innovations in their field, e.g., parametric design, building physics, construction robotics, home automation, etc. Architecture students today must understand how things work and absorb some of the basic principles and techniques involved in their design, construction or operation. Now students need to build back some of that analytical, logical, critical, and analogical thinking that may have atrophied due to a traditional architectural education. Playing with toy construction kits for building automatic control and mobile robot models, does the job without losing the architect´s approach and attitude.

summary The working team is comprised of professionals and students from Engineering and Architecture degree courses. This group, participating at a certified research by Secretaría de Ciencia y Técnica de la Nación, have agreed to carry out a joint designing experience about a micro-architecture prototype to be domotized by the Chair of Automation of Mechanical Engineering.We have designed a display equipment for local bookstores. The equipment in itself is ductile and useful to build a stand. It can be easily coupled and divided into modules for shop windows and different spaces within stores. It is changeable, flexible, and its arrangement is dynamic. The design contemplates general sample functions according to the various sizes of the product, which range from small to large-scale objects.The equipment offers its own domotic features.

summary For those questions of the specialisation, the Informaitc engineers develop applications of digital graphic destined to designers, users that, in general, ignore with the chore of developing applications. Also, most of the designers have to fight with applications that do not contemplate their necessities neither translates their expressive intentions with clarity. This reciprocal discussion may find an adequate solution in interdisciplinary work. The fecundity, and until the possibility, of the internal dialogue of these teams will depend, between other looks, of the quantity of common concepts that they possess. In this sense, we focused our educational task opposite the future engineers. We understand that, at the same time, the actual education of the designer, in whatever of their multiple looks, should contemplate the basic training (not instrumental but if conceptual) in questions related with the code of the applications that they use. This intellectual effort would enable the digital designer to investigate the topics of personalising their user applications (AutoCAD, CorelDraw, etc.). In this ground, we should greet the admission of the languages of visual code (Delphi, Visual [basic], etc.) that they permit a friendlier development of applications. Its goal is qualify them in order to develop applications of digital graphic, providing them concepts of space understanding and visual training for the production of IT applications of digital graphic.

summary In the context of recent transformations in the professional practice of architecture after the incorporation of new developments in digital technology, the rigid disciplinary and scope of intervention delimitations that characterize most academic proposals have lost support. This paper intends to contribute, in general, to the consideration about the referred problem, and, in particular, to the discussion about the urge to review the curricula of the architectural programs of most Latin-American universities, still defined by the concept of an autonomous and individual architect.

summary The incorporation of virtual technologies to the learning process in architectural design is still incipient, using graphic software mainly as a rendering tool late in the curriculum. This paper presents an experience carried out with first year studio students, at the School of Architecture of the University of Chile, in which the intention is to incorporate virtual learning as part of the process spatial modification thinking. Through the use of Form Z, friendly software to learn for beginners, applied for simple extrusions, geometric transformations as translation, rotation or scaling, and the transformation of geometries and proportions through the handling of topological levels of polygonal objects. Through increasingly complex exercises we developed an effective complement of a traditional design methodology.

summary The potential of 3D virtual environments in the field of architecture and the roll of the architect in the development of such environments are subjects that require our attention. In particular, the subject of virtual architecture, not as representation of future buildings but as an architectural product to be inhabited in a virtual context, surely requires our attention. The paper addresses the question of validating Virtual Architecture" as an architectural product and makes reference to the potential it offers for the professional intervention of the architect. In such a context, the paper elaborates on the expertise that the Architects of Virtuality needs to acquire. For conclusions, the paper develops a model of curriculum that articulates traditional elements from the curriculum of architecture and the curriculum of graphic design.

summary This study examines how digital design and manufacturing technologies are redefining what is considered technically feasible to build in architecture. Six case studies are examined using the Buildability Model proposed in the literature. Results show that buildability factors remain essentially unchanged and should only be deepened or expanded in scope. The results, however, suggest that buildability principles are very questionable, and therefore, they must be reformulated. Additionally, the impact of these results on architectural education curricula is discussed.
