title The Employment of Digital Simulation in the Planning Departments in US Cities - How does it affect design and decision-making processes?

summary The increased interactivity of digital simulation tools has offered a wide range of opportunities that may provoke a paradigmatic shift in urban design practice. Yet, research results did not provide any clear evidence that such shift seems to exist. Further studies are required to examine the methods and impact of their usage on decision-making and design outcome. To that goal, this research uses the single-case study design that has been pursued in three phases: literature review, online survey, and semi-structured interviews. The results have shown inadequacies, inconsistency, and ineffectiveness of usage of the tools that are most appropriate to the design activities of each phase and thus a limited impact on critical areas of the decision-making. The impact of the tools' usage is found to be correlated with not only the extent of their usage, but also with a variety of procedural and substantive factors such as the plan methodology, extent of tool's usage, choice of the appropriate tool, and planners' skills and capabilities in using those tools.

summary Literature suggests that despite the increasing range and variety of computational tools and technologies, they have not really been employed for designing as extensively as it might be. This is due in part to the numerous challenges and impediments limiting their effective usage such as the methodological, procedural, and substantive factors and limitations, and skepticism about their impact of usage on the design process and outcome. The gap in our understanding of how advanced computational tools could support the design activities and design decision-making has expanded considerably to become a new area of inquiry with considerable room for the expansion of knowledge. This research is a single-case study that has been pursued in two phases: literature review and survey followed by analysis and discussion of the empirical results. The empirical observations were compared to the theoretical propositions and with results of similar research to highlight the areas and the extent to what the IT tools' usage have influenced the outcome of the design process. title Sharing Background Noise: Enactive Approach in Reading Auditory Space

summary This paper conceptualizes the Auditory space in terms of hearing process by employing the Enactive Approach. In this context, this study aims investigate the spatial awareness and proposes a research methodology to achieve access to the auditory space where places share similar background noise. This methodology consists of two phases: field recording of the pre-determined route first explored by the Spectrogram Sound Analysis (SSA) technique, secondly with the participation of 8 subjects, a survey analysis based on listening to records captured from the predefined route. This research aims to reveal potential use of SSA by relating to survey examination as a new way of reading space.

title Studying the Impact of Immersion on Design Cognition

summary With the recent developments in information and communication technologies, designers have adapted digital tools and new ways of designing into their practice. In order to develop efficient systems for designing, the adaptation of new tools and techniques in design practice requires a better understanding of how designers employ the digital medium and what impact the digital medium have on designers’ cognition. The latter one is the subject of this paper. The paper presents the methodology and the initial results of a pilot to investigate the impact of immersion on design cognition. The initial result of the pilot study indicates that the designers were able to adapt to each design environment which affords different kinds of activities and requires different cognitive load.

title 3D Scene Representation as a Collection of Images and Fundamental Matrices

summary The problem we solve in this paper is the following. Suppose we are given N views of a static scene obtained from different viewpoints, perhaps with different cameras. These viewpoints we call reference viewpoints since they are all we know of the scene. We would like to decide if it is possible to predict ano- ther view of the scene taken by a camera from a viewpoint which is arbitrary and a priori di erent from all the reference viewpoints. One method for doing this would be to use these viewpoints to construct a three-dimensional repre- sentation of the scene and reproject this representation on the retinal plane of the virtual camera. In order to achieve this goal, we would have to establish some sort of calibration of our system of cameras, fuse the three-dimensional representations obtained from, say, pairs of cameras thereby obtaining a set of 3-D points, the scene. We would then have to approximate this set of points by surfaces, a segmentation problem which is still mostly unsolved, and then intersect the optical rays from the virtual camera with these sur- faces. This is the most straightforward way of going from a set of images to a new image using the current computer vision paradigm of rst building a three-dimensional representation of the environment from which the rest is derived. We do not claim that there does not exist any simpler way of using the three-dimensional representation than the one we just sketched, but this is just simply not our point. Our point is that it is possible to avoid entirely the explicit three-dimensional reconstruction process: the scene is represented by its images and by some ba- sically linear relations that govern the way points can be put in correspondence between views when they are the images of the same scene-point. These images and their algebraic relations are all we need for predicting a new image. This approach is similar in spirit to the one that has been used in trinocular stereo. Hypotheses of correspondences between two of the images are used to predict features in the third. These predictions can then be checked to validate or inva- lidate the initial correspondence. This approach has proved to be quite e cient and accurate. Related to these ideas are those develo- ped in the photogrammetric community under the name of transfer methods which nd for one or more image points in a given image set, the corresponding points in some new image set.

summary The use of 3D printing in architectural research, education and practice has been almost exclusively destined to produce physical representations – models— of designed building. Recent advances in Additive Manufacturing (AM) have exponentially increased the mechanical properties of 3D printed parts, opening new opportunities for this technology to be directly applied to functional architectural components at an increasingly larger scale. Thus, this paper examines the design, structural and aesthetic implications, as well as the feasibility of advanced 3D printing technologies in the production of functional architectural components through the design and prototyping of a customized, non-regular spatial frame system.

summary This paper reports a teaching and learning experience of architectural digital three-dimensional geometric modeling from its tectonic character, with regard to the interactions between the formal architectural framework and its sturdy structure. Was held at the undergraduate course in Architecture and Urbanism of the Universidade Federal da Paraíba. It´s an interdisciplinary exercise aimed at the integration of knowledge where students utilize the contents learned in the discipline of Structural Systems I for the construction of a digital three-dimensional geometric model with the Trimble´s software Sketchup in the Perspective discipline, resulting in the development of models with greater formal consistency.
