summary This paper basically describes part of our current research on the role of social aspects in collaborative design. Most part of this research, up until this stage, is theoretical research, which is our attempt to imply theories in social psychology in collaborative design. In order to step further towards empirical research we needs tool for the investigation. Discussion on this paper is built upon our attempt to develop this tool. Considering this context the discussion can be observed into two sections. First part is basically summary of our theoretical research to this point. Based on these theoretical backgrounds we discuss our research on defining and developing the tool in the second part. The tool is basically a prototype of design process representation system which is expected to be used as our tool for next stages of this research, investigating the role of social aspect in the real practice of collaborative design.

summary This research was focused on visualizing new housing model and its customization based on people’s option as part of implementing community-based development principle. There are two significant research findings that are discussed in this paper that will be basis for developing a user-friendlier digital model as part of longterm research in visualizing whole resettlement process. The role of local person who is authorized to handle the model and to customize it to other inhabitants in the resettlement area is very essential in order to achieve the maximum versatility of the model. Another significant finding is potential of VRML model as information nodes for other digital modeling alternatives in an integrated information system for urban revitalization project.

title A Preliminary Model of Community-based Integrated Information System for Urban Spatial Development

summary This paper describes a research on building Integrated Information System for Urban Spatial Development. The objective of the research phase discussed in this paper is to define a prototype of information system that basically facilitates information communication among involved participants in an urban spatial development planning. The system is designed by putting stress on local community. Their spatial perception and the availability of GIS technology in local context become constraints in building the system. Internet becomes the main alternative for information dissemination for this phase. This is also supported by the use of web-based GIS as framework of information system. Through few socialization sessions, the proposed model has indicated a prospected alternative to be seamless communication media among participants. To support an easy-access for local people in using this information system a mechanism of information access has been proposed in the form of local information center.

title Integrating Public Participation Program into CAAD Curriculum

summary This paper discusses an early phase of ongoing research on the implementation of public participation program in urban setting by academia through digital visualization projects performed by students in CAAD course works context. The implication of this program on both sides, the academia and the city, is examined. The result has indicated prospects in enhancing digital course contents, which is not merely digital visualizing built environment anymore but also making digital project cases more local oriented. From public side, the resulted mechanism may facilitate dissemination of urban development program as well as opening wider opportunity to accommodate community aspiration.

summary This paper discusses efforts of disseminating urban development program in a developing country setting by employing digital workshop in action planning workshops. The setting of urban development projects is usually very complicated. Socioeconomic background and people's properties are varied. That's why it is reasonable if problem approach is generated through a study on the potential of utilizing digital methods. Complicated variables also lead to study the possibility of not focusing on certain mode of workshop, since each workshop has its own plus-minus that might only be effective for certain variables in case study.

summary In this paper we view the process of collaboration as a social setting, rather than a problem of communication. It involves and is impacted by social, non-technical aspects, such as lack of shared understanding, conflict, availability and motivation of the participants, and other factors that can facilitate or impede the goals of the collaborative enterprise. We propose to use a social and psychological approach. The ideal model should be a collaborative design system that can facilitate the socially constructed interactions among participants, as well as the communication of information. The proposed system should enable participants to assess the typical problems of collaboration. We build up our effort towards this goal by developing a representation system of collaborative design process. In this research we attempt to map collaborative design process into process design by using our proposed representation system. Our intention is to enable the existing system visually representing the integration of design stage to the whole construction process: since project planning until building operation.

summary This paper discusses our investigation on the potentials of CAAD system implementation to generate collaborative process in a complex organization of construction project. Housing reconstruction projects in disaster-recovery context has been taken as case study to examine some CAAD system that has been claimed as collaborative. Based on social organizational theory and complex adaptive system theory we attempt too test the claim by analyzing the flexibility of these CAD system on the real complex organizational project. We stratify the result based on the level of adaptability of each CAAD system to indicate the level of collaboration.
