summary This paper proposes a logic-based framework for representing and manipulating knowledge during Computer-Aided Architectural Design. The framework incorporates a meta-level architecture to represent declarative design knowledge and strategic knowledge used by the designer. It consists of an object layer, a design requirements layer and strategies for navigating through the design space. An extended first-order logic is described which has been used to represent some examples of architectural knowledge. This computational model is being implemented in KAUS (Knowledge Acquisition and Utilisation System), a general purpose knowledge-based system, founded in Multi-Layered Logic.

summary Collaborative Design is a complex group activity involving participants with heterogenous skills. Any useful support system must take that heterogenety into account. This article demonstrates that group support agents are viable for design tasks. It explores the problem of supporting emergence, a significant feature of the sreative design process.

The papers presents a framework for concept formation that draws on a structure of a a design agent that includes sensors, perceptors and conceptors that interact with each other and the external and internal environment of the agent to produce the situation that is a contingent basis for the formation and use of concepts.

We argue that the support of learning of strategic knowledge in collaborative design by computer-mediated means must be based upon empirical evidence about the nature of learning and design practice in the real world. Examples of research by the authors that seeks to provide that evidence are described and an approach to computer system design and evaluation proposed.
