summary The senses of “Touch” bring people the feeling of reality, and human beings can always naturally sense the tactile impression. Hence we touch things and our sense tells us that our hands are touching something (Hinckley et al. 1999). Comparing to the tools used by designers between traditional and new digital media in the design process, the most difference is in the sense of touch. This paper focuses on the sense of touch to point out the haptic experience which have ignored by the past in design process. Four phenomena will be discussed in details and some useful suggestions given for future study.

This paper focuses on the study of interactions between physical space and digital design media, and proposes a preliminary interactive framework between them. This research proposes a preliminary sense-of-space oriented framework, which indicates the crucial interactive elements and properties of physical space and digital design media.

summary The process of architects exploring the program with clients often take place through face-to-face oral discussions and visual aids, such as photos and sketches. Our research focuses on two communication mediums: language and sketch. We employ machine learning techniques to assist architects and clients to improve their communication and reduce misunderstandings. We have trained a Naive Bayesian Classifier machine, the language assistant (LA), to classify architectural vocabularies with associations to design requirements. In addition, we have trained a Generative Adversarial Network, the sketch assistant (SA), to generate photo quality images based on architects' sketches. The language assistant and sketch assistant combined can facilitate architect-client communication during the pre-design stage.

summary As we continue to discover the potential of social media data as an insightful source for academic research, the majority of previous work tends to focus on the density of socio-spatial relations as the foundation for understanding urban phenomena. This paper extended those approaches by introducing the concepts of diversity and inclusiveness through an investigation of the 'differences' within the networks of relations that are inherent to social media data. The author constructs a diversity measure based on the variety of home locations of social media user visitors to each geographical location in the city. This home location, in its turn, is derived from each user's digital spatio-temporal footprint. This proposed method demonstrates that through the visualization of this diversity measure, 'social hubs' (which are frequently visited by different groups of people) were able to be located that would otherwise be overlooked in conventional data analyses that focus only on density. As such, this research expands the usefulness of social media as a practical tool to help understand urban processes by making the concept of diversity - a key consideration in many planning and design contexts - measurable and mappable.

This paper provides a significant theoretical framework to unpack complex spatial relationships caused by the networked spaces. Such emerging design approach challenges the design thinking, design process and design knowledge of architecture, urban design, as well as media design.

summary The spatial nature of cyberspace has not yet fully defined. This paper presents both analogous and comparative approach to reveal the spatial nature of cyberspace based on a conventional architecture theory, Space Syntax. Two types of city, the physical and the virtual, are compared in order to realize the configurational properties of cyberspace. The findings of this study indicate that the theoretical assumptions of existing architecture theories need to be altered so that cyberspace can be well interpret and understand.

summary The purpose of this study is to reveal some aspects of the spatial nature of cyberspace by applying a cognitive approach, which is to decode cyberspatial cognition generated from the spatial experiences of an architectural designer. Two types of cities, the physical and the virtual, are compared in order to further realize the spatial knowledge of cyberspace. The results of this research indicate that understanding spatial characteristics of virtual environment can base upon investigating cognitive sketches. In addition, architectural designers might benefit from the findings of this study.

summary In recent years, designers have used digital media at various points of the design process, which helps expand architectural possibilities. Digital media has changed not only the architectural style, but also the design process (Lynn, 1999). In earlier times, some researchers of design thinking have looked at how the role of physical models played in traditional design processes (Millon, 1994). However, the design process has been changed when media designers used to adjust from traditional to digital. Therefore, visual thinking and cognitive behavior of designers also change while using physical models in design processes. From the synthesis of the two aforementioned disciplines, we can find that there exists a point of deficiency. That is the cognitive research about designers who use physical models in digital design processes is absent. This is discussed in the current paper.

summary While looking at glasses, we will have various sensation on their forms, colours, textures etc. These feelings direct us to decide which pair of glasses to buy. This study tries to find out the relationship between human sensation and glasses design; that is, to figure out what kinds of forms will excite what kind of human sensation. By adopting this relationship, we also propose a computer support system which can automatically generate appropriate glasses forms in response to the expectation of consumers. In this study, we first collect several adjectives which can express the human sensation on glasses designs. Then, in an experiment, subjects are asked to evaluate a set of glasses in order to acquire the ratings of those adjectives. We further analyze the formal elements included in different glasses, multivariate analysis and the neural networks are used to decide which design of each element are more likely to excite a specific human sensation. These results then are built as a knowledge base of a support system which includes an inference engine to assist a designer to produce new glasses design. By receiving the input of desired adjectives, this system will find out the most preferred elements for each adjective and integrate them into some appropriate design prototypes for further modification.
