summary In normative or prescriptive theories, architectural requirements are set as parameters to support design decisions. A set of formal parameters is suffice to generate a wide variety of compositions, but associated to the same formal language. This paper looks at the work of the Portuguese-Brazilian architect, Delfim Fernandes Amorim, whose contributions to the dissemination of modern ideas and the development of a particular architectural lexicon is quite relevant, particularly his addendum to the municipal land use and occupation act, which became generally known as the Amorim's Law. It consists basically in allowing spaces of transitory occupation and specific architectural elements to be built beyond the mandatory setback limits. This paper presents the development of a grammar that shows how some of the parameters described in Amorim's law are able to create a strong formal language and influence the building's architectural composition. The grammar was developed in two successive stages: the first allows the generation of the pattern of adjacency of the apartment's rooms; the second, guide the insertion of the openings and architectural elements as defined by the Amorim's Law.

title An Integrated 3D Geodatabase for Palladio's Work

summary The paper presents a novel digital 3D GIS web-based system entirely founded on Google Earth, built to offer a deep insight into Palladio's opera for restitution of its architectural surveys, reconstruction for historical reasons, analysis for structural and other options, and assembly and presentation of all certified Palladian documentation.The development of the application follows the philosophy of visual computing and it is based on an architectural knowledge representation.The information system is conceived as a typical Rich Internet Application and it is based on the digitalization of the complete Palladian corpus documentation implemented by the Centro Internazionale di Studi di Architettura Andrea Palladio (CISAAP).The 3D geodatabase system is, actually, in use at the Centro as the Palladian information system for researchers and in two expositions at Barbaran da Porto Palace in Vicenza, and at Villa Poiana at Poiana Maggiore, where is widely used by tourists for virtual visits to Palladian buildings.

summary The paper presents an innovative semantic and parametric method to build 3D models to be used in cognitive-information systems. We integrated structured geometrical and documentary information resulting from multiple sources with the aim to enhance the knowledge of those sites within the frame of their historical evolution and their institutional management in a 3D GIS/DB. The developed applications were designed for different types of users, with a largely scalable interface, able to support different output devices and to work at different levels of iconicity. The system allows a full comprehension of the buildings in their own context, permitting to discover unknown relationships, to evaluate their architectural occupancy and to quickly access a complex system of information.

summary Currently, the land regulation plans define the urban micro-scale, producing standardized and pre-dimensioned blocks and lots, generating monotony, poor urban quality and high infrastructure costs. In the quest for sustainability, studies point to a density and a certain degree of population density to enable urban infrastructures with qualitative and quantitative gains, through concepts of compactness, completeness and connectivity. This study presents possibilities of batch sizing using the Grammatical method of the Form, through morphological configurations and rules presents possibilities of generation of new formats, distribution of urban lots in the neighborhood Valentina, in João Pessoa - PB and discusses results.

summary This work aims to present the importance of several didactic resources combination in the Architectural Drawing teaching, following the Cognitive Ergonomics concepts. From these concepts, we revised and modified the discipline teaching methodology, altering the techniques and the used technological resources. The combination of graphic software (generic, specific, tutorial) and physical models, demonstrate that the information driven to the specific interests of students improved the results in relation to productivity and satisfaction in the accomplishment of the tasks (learning). A partial evaluation of the discipline showed an improvement in: attendance, students' understanding, interaction among them, interest and more elaborated final results.

title To reform or not to reform? Analysis of the influence of the shape in the customization of apartment projects

summary The starting point for this research was carried out through an investigation that measured in what extent original projects proposed by the real estate market were customized, resulting in Reformed Projects. It is known that many factors can influence this customization process. This phase of the research is restricted to formal and constructive factors, aiming to analyze how these can influence the customization. The shape grammar, used as an analytical tool, showed that the shape of the original projects had little influence on the result of the reformed ones, indicating that factors of other nature may be more decisive in the customization process.

summary This article introduces the concept of Customization Grammar, an analytical shape grammar that describes the alterations introduced by homeowners to high-standard apartments before occupation. This is viewed as a contemporary phenomenon that reveals the incompatibility between social demands and housing units offered by the current real estate market in Recife, Brazil. It is expected that the proposed grammar could support mass customization design procedures and able to generate suitable housing units to current and future lifestyles.

summary This paper presents part of the results of an investigation which main goal is to propose strategies to guide the design of high standards apartment projects, in order to facilitate the implementation of reforms. The starting point came from a research which measured how projects proposed by the real estate market (Original Projects - OPs) were customized, resulting in Reformed Projects (RPs). This step is dedicated to the development of the Reform Grammar (GR), which, although it purports to guide future reforms, goals to identify reform patterns most used in the customization process.

summary This paper presents the research development for a base structural module for the Casa Nordeste project. Casa Nordeste is a compact housing experiment that will participate in the Solar Decathlon Latin America competition. It consists of a modular building that houses living, cooking, and sanitizing space. Developments presented are based on digital design and fabrication principles and processes, through algorithms that allow its customization. In this sense, discussions begin with a brief theoretical discussion about the concepts that underline the project: evolutionary housing; digital technologies that improve design and construction; open source construction and generative design systems. The paper finalizes by presenting and discussing developments of three different design aspects of the structural module: (a) geometry of the frames, (b) its modulation, and (c) fittings and joining mechanisms.

summary This paper shows the development of a system to generate customized small housing projects. The process of housing construction usually involves investment for the development of the project and for the management of the building process. In small housing, this investment is left aside for economic reasons. However, due to lack of it, the project may not be adequate and its construction can be even more costly. Aiming to contribute to this issue, this paper presents the creation of a generative design system, a shape grammar, that seeks to reinterpret the traditional design/construction process of housing.

summary This paper describes the use of 3D digitization to acquire data and to produce technical documentation for the inventory of historical buildings. The object defined as case study is an ornamented window of the Lisbon’s Metropolitano Social Headquarters, project of the architect Norte Júnior, located in the city of Lisbon. The methodology of the research relies on the comparison of two different approaches: (1) the use of Autodesk 123D Catch software to produce a geometric model and (2) the of the software My 3D Scanner to obtain a point cloud and the MeshLab software to obtain a texturized mesh.

summary The introduction of new technologies in design areas is due, in large part, to the rapid development of the computer industry. This new paradigm has created tools and creative possibilities in the routine of several professionals. The Graphic Expression Department is responsible for disciplines that include the knowledge of Graphical Geometry and different approaches to graphically represent projects from different areas of knowledge. Thus, the present experiment presents a possibility of updating the teaching of representation from the introduction of Shape Grammar and through digital tools, in particular, the use of parametric design, visual programming and rapid prototyping.
