summary Digital representation is an important resource for the architect’s work in all project stages. The use of appropriate representations facilitates proper interpretation of the project, resulting in more accurate design decisions. This article presents the entire process and the results of a n academic research that developed a digital library that contains 25 species of trees, easily found in Curitiba streets. It also describes the methodology that was built throughout the study, which focuses on a production of representations that do not depend on special talent or personal drawing characteristics. Finally, it shows the produced representations and provides a brief analysis of the results.

summary The term participation has been used to define different activities, such as civil debate, communication, consultation, delegation, self-help construction, political decisions. However, participation in design started from the idea that individuals whom being affected by a design project must contribute to the design process. Recently, designers have been moving closer to the future users and developing new ways to empower them to get involved in the design process. In this paper we rethink the way the early design process is developed in a participatory approach thanks to parametric methods. A use case is proposed showing the potential of parametric design methods to empower the participation of users in the design of their facilities. The use case is dealing in particular with the spatial planning of an office building where the users together with the spatial planning team are able to design the layout spatial configuration by 1) fixing the objectives, 2) manipulating the model, 3)modifying some parameters, 4) visualizing the iterations and evaluating in a real-time each solution in an interactive 3D environment and together with facility managers 5) choosing the configuration of the spatial layout.

summary Many situations related to natural environment and human activities increase the risk related to housing and create a demand for rapid post-disaster solutions. The solutions implemented by both the non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the local and national organizations should fulfill the requirements of the temporarily displaced populations. However post-disaster design faces many challenges in its process making the response always more complex. At the same time, computer-based design is a growing approach in both architectural practice and research. The research described in this paper aims to help in finding solutions to design issues by addressing the potential of computer-based architectural design support. It is applied to shelter and camp development and takes into account physical, contextual and climatic parameters. The outcome is a design process for shelter and camp, which has been validated by a parametric prototype experiment in a case study. This should support humanitarian teams and contribute to enhancing the quality of design as well as to reducing the time required for the design and construction processes.
