title Influence of Immersive Contextual Environments on Collaborative Ideation Cognition - Through design conversations, gestures and sketches

summary In the design studio, Virtual Reality (VR) has mainly been included as a visualization tool to explore pre-designed ideas developed in traditional 3D software or using pen on paper. Meanwhile, a reshaping of the design process has been taking place, bringing forward interaction/experiential concerns and co-design approaches throughout disciplines in a push for a more thorough consideration of projects' contexts. This paper reports an exploratory study of how immersive contextual representations influence the co-ideation process. Audio-video recordings of co-ideation sessions (9) from a pedagogical studio were analyzed through verbal and representational (sketches and design gestures) exchanges as occurring in three different conditions: (a) pen on paper, immersive headset-free VR (b) without, and (c) with the use of contextual immersive environment (photogrammetric scans and 3D models). Results show that, although design conversations were similar across all conditions, design gestures were more often directly related to- than independent from the graphical representation only when using an immersive contextual environment. Furthermore, the rate of sketching episodes in general and sketching explanations were considerably lower in this condition. This could imply that use of pre-made context greatly reduces the need of sketching elements to support a clearer co-ideation.

summary The introduction of the Building Information Modeling (BIM) approach has facilitated the management process of documents produced by different kinds of professionals involved in the design and/or renovation of a building, through identification and subsequent management of geometrical interferences (Clash Detection). The methodology of this research proposes a tool to support Clash Detection, introducing the logical-operative dimension, that may occur with the presence of a construction site within a hospital structure, through the integration of a BIM model within a Game Engine environment, to preserve the continuity of daily hospital activities and trying to reduce negative impacts, times and costs due to construction activities.

summary In its application to design phases, BIM has progressively shown limits in terms of semantic representation and efficiency of supporting collaboration. This paper investigates the possibilities related to BIM representation enrichment through semantic web approaches, in order to represent knowledge rather than information and presents a prototypal application oriented to the integration of the informative model of the building with a knowledge base developed by means of ontologies, providing a more structured system of interconnected information.

summary In a built heritage process, meant as a structured system of activities aimed at the investigation, preservation, and management of architectural heritage, any task accomplished by the several actors involved in it is deeply influenced by the way the knowledge is represented and shared. In the current heritage practice, knowledge representation and management have shown several limitations due to the difficulty of dealing with large amount of extremely heterogeneous data. On this basis, this research aims at extending semantic web approaches and technologies to architectural heritage knowledge management in order to provide an integrated and multidisciplinary representation of the artifact and of the knowledge necessary to support any decision or any intervention and management activity. To this purpose, an ontology-based system, representing the knowledge related to the artifact and its contexts, has been developed through the formalization of domain-specific entities and relationships between them.

summary We describe one of the three core use-pattern building blocks of a parametric approach to simulating use-patterns in buildings. Use-patterns are modeled as events which use specified descriptions of spaces, actors and activities which constitute them. The simulation system relies on three fundamental patterns of use - move, meet and do. The move pattern is considered in detail in this paper with specific reference to what we term the partial knowledge issue. Modeling decision making about how to move through the space (what path to take) depends on modeling the actor's partial access to knowledge. Visibility is used as an example of partial knowledge. The parametric approach described in the paper enables the clear separation of syntactical and semantic conditions which inform decisions and the coordination of decisions made by agents in a simulation of use-patterns. This approach contributes to extending the analytical capability of Building Information Models from the point of view of evaluating how a proposed building design may be used, given complex, interrelated patterns of use.

summary This paper describes the context and the proposal for the extension of Building Information Modelling to built heritage in order to enhance information management during the investigation and restoration activities. The core of the presented model is the integration of a BIM-based modelling environment and a knowledge base developed by means of ontologies, in order to represent all the semantics needed for a comprehensive representation of the historical artefact.To test its features, the model has been applied to the real archaeological investigation process of the Castor and Pollux temple at Cori, Italy.

summary We present a proof of concept implementation of an integration strategy for connecting CAD with Blockchain. We explain the components of most blockchains and the value they bring to the built environment ecosystem, the potential impact a complete integration might have and we demonstrate the first two of four levels of integration we have identified between CAD and blockchain technologies. For the purposes of the paper we use Rhino / Grasshopper and Ethereum as the two components of integration.

summary This paper presents an application of Decentralised Autonomous Organisation (DAO) in the field of design and AEC industry. The model is applied in the realm of shape grammar proposing the possibility of allowing multiple grammarists to collaborate in the definition of a new grammar within a Blockchain environment that acts as a distributed ledger. DAOs systems and Blockchain are introduced as well as shape grammar and its fundamental rules. The collaborative nature of a DAO with the inner logic of shape grammar, which bases its principle and rules in multiple variations and combinations of simple initial shapes, brings to the problem of recording and validating changes and improvements in the design chain. For this reason, a voting system to govern the process is introduced, based on both quantitative values, i.e. number of votes, and qualitative power, i.e. the reputation of who votes, applying a factor that scales the vote according to the expertise of the voter. An example is provided showing a possible scenario in a design environment along with validation criteria, and predicting future stages applied in an always more BIM-oriented practice.

summary We present a Blockchain collaboration mechanism on optimisation problems between distributed participants who work with building information modelling tools. The blockchain mechanism is capable of executing smart contracts, acting as a reward mechanism of independent designers attempting to collaborate or compete on optimising a design performance problem. Earlier work has described the potential integration through different levels of Computer Aided Design and Blockchain. We present an expanded version of that integration and we showcase how a team can collaboratively and competitively work, using BIM tools, through the blockchain. The original contribution of the paper is the use of the design optimisation performance as a consensus mechanism for block writing in blockchains. To accomplish that we introduce mechanisms for BIM to Blockchain Integration but also describe a special category of blockchains for architectural design and the built environment. The paper concludes with an analysis of the relationship between trust and values as encapsulated in the blockchain and how these could affect the design collaboration.

summary In our times, in a complex and universal village where problems are intertwined and pervasive beyond our imagination, we need new approaches to deal with them – appropriately. In a previous work we highlighted the importance to reason ontologies: a ‘world’ f.i. a building – as a mental image – is not a Linnaeus’s classifi cation (structured set of entities) but a system (goals oriented set of classes) able to reasoning upon selectively chosen entities belonging to different Realms (ontology universes) (Fioravanti et al., 2011a). The general aim of our research– to be an effective aid to design – is to simulate wo/man as designer and user of designed spaces, hence how mental skill can be computably included in new tools able to tackle these problems. This paper is focused on the fi rst role: how actor-designers approach design problems and how the inference mechanism can help them and affect the design process. A ‘Building Object’ - the dual system of Spaces and Technology elements – is inferred in several ways according to different goals and the inference mechanism can, simulating human mental shortcuts, optimize thinking.

summary Previous studies argued that human behaviour simulation is an effective analytic evaluation method to predict dynamic and complex human behaviour and social phenomena in not-yet built design solutions. However, its educational effects on architectural design have not been reported. The present study aims to investigate ways in which human behaviour simulation affects students’ feedback and design development. To achieve this, the study analysed weekly design productions, interviews and surveys collected in two experimental design courses using human behaviour simulation, held in the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. In result, the analytic experimentation and observable representation of human behaviour simulation enabled students to evaluate and develop functional operability of buildings, accounting for users’ activities and social interactions, and develop design narratives relevant to social & cultural factors. However, the complexity of establishing & coordinating virtual people’ rules hindered fluent iterations of design development. Despite its technical limitations, human behaviour simulation has significant & unique educational advantages that can facilitate quantitative & qualitative aspects of design analysis, evaluation, & dynamic feedback to the students during design processes.

summary The proliferation of online and digital data in our world yields unprecedented opportunities for connecting physical and digital parametric models with live data input and feedback. Tangible interfaces and augmented displays provide theatrical settings for designers to visualize real-world data and experience realtime feedback while manipulating physical and digital models on the table. This paper proposes a new approach to design workflow, where physical model and virtual model can be interconnected and informed in realtime by multiple analytical datasets and live data streams. Using 3D scanning, blob detection, and multi-touch techniques, multidimensional tangible interfaces and augmented displays presented in this paper demonstrate a powerful new approach for designing and interacting with physical models, materials, and environmental data.

summary Simulating the impact that built environments produce on human behavior prior to a building’s construction and occupancy is a complex task in architectural design. Current simulation approaches provide a limited representation of how dynamic spatial, social and environmental conditions affect the behavior of autonomous virtual occupants. We address this issue by means of influence maps – spatial representations of the influence that dynamic stimuli exert on an occupant at a specific time. To support an agent’s decisionmaking, we construct affordance maps that determine possible space-occupant interactions based on the combination of normalized influence maps, weighed by occupant preferences. We demonstrate the proposed approach by simulating the diverse spatial behaviors of virtual occupants in a social setting in response to dynamic stimuli.

summary Cultural heritage is traditionally mediated through institu- tional bodies that are authorised to broadcast heritage information, whereas new media technologies such as social media platforms con- tinue to enforce individual storytelling and information sharing. Therefore GLAMs (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) have to cope with a shift of public interest from their services to more ac- cessible, entertaining and democratic engagements available as ‘liv- ing’ media. Unmediated cultural heritage is the paramount aim of this work and, in a theoretical sense, a utopia for generation of authenticity or meaning-making. Within the realm of digital heritage, this study explores the nature of engagement with cultural heritage using an in- novative means. In this phase of the research, a photogrammetric model of Kashgar’s narrow alleys is deployed in a system, called Hy- brid Virtual Environment 3D (Hyve-3D). Via its 3D cursor technolo- gy, the concept of unmediated cultural heritage is unfolded through active participation, collaboration and interaction. Thus, in the context of heritage, this research explores a hitherto undocumented frontier of Hyve-3D designated to immersive collaborative 3D sketching.

summary During a design process, few methods allow designers to evaluate if and how the future building will match and affect its intended use and its intended users. Computer simulation techniques have focused on prediction of human behavior in built environments in order to overcome this lack; nevertheless, their applications are limited to representation of specifi c behavioral aspects while a reliable representation of building response to actual use is still missing. Based on current developments in the video game industry, the research described here aims to establish a new approach to simulating human behavior in buildings, centered on a clear definition of use scenarios as specific structures of active entities called Events. They provide information about occurrences happening during the use process in terms of Actors involved, Activities performed and Space where the event takes place. Equipped with AI engines, events control and coordinate the actors’ behavior during the simulation, representing their interaction, cooperation and collaboration.

summary This paper presents a system for simulating human behaviour in built heritage artefacts aimed at supporting the decision-making processes for their possible re-use.Its goal is to predict the mutual influence between the occupancy phenomena and the architectural heritage environment, in order to optimise the balance between efficiency requirements of spaces and preservation needs of the heritage artefact. The proposed system is based on the integration of a BIM environment with a game engine that allows the modelling of the built environment and the simulation of its use phenomena at the same time. A central role in the systems is played by the distribution of Artificial Intelligence among Virtual Users, process entities (the activities) and the building components, ensuring the coherent representation of the use processes and the direct measurement of their impact on the artefact.

summary This research investigates the development of a new modelling and simulation approach for building design - defined as Agent-Based Building Modelling - that moves from the current object-oriented representation (such as in BIM) to an agent-based one. In the proposed approach, the representation domain is extended in order to include users and hosted activities, and the static modelling of the building is integrated with the dynamic simulation of its functioning. For this purpose, this paper presents a general template of the agent that ensures homogeneity of formalisation of the different typologies of entities (building components, spaces, V-Users, activities) and support the virtual simulation of the use process.

summary The behavior of a human being in a building, its activities, its interactions with it and with other people are certainly a highly complex phenomenon extremely hard to predict and evaluate. At the same time, the response of a built environment to future users’ needs is one of the key factors of its performance. The Agent-based Modeling paradigm is considered potentially the best way to represent human behavior but, in the building design field, its experiences are limited to representation of partial aspects of human behavior in discrete events. Currently, a more "extended" representation of human behavior able to offer an overview of the human activities related to the building ‘functioning’, is missing,. This lack is due to the complexity of interaction among users and built environment, and to the extensive knowledge, provided by different disciplines, needed to reliably represent it. The proposed research focuses on the construction of a general representation template of user-actor, easy to implement and flexible enough to structure the large amount of data affecting human behavior. The development of the ontology-based template shown in this paper can lead to a user-agent’s entity whose parameters and behavioral rules can encode and represent several ‘aspects’ of real users and their interactions with the other entities (building components, furniture, other people) in a built environment.
