summary Computer Aided Architectural Design (CAAD) decisions and judgments have been at the heart of architectural design practice. Despite the increasing popularity of computer aided design applications, measuring the decision making of designers empirically remains elusive. Past research claiming usefulness of the CAD has relied largely on anecdotal or case studies that are vulnerable to bias. The study reviews results of prior investigations. The relatively few laboratory experiments report hardly any empirical results regarding the measurement of CAD decision making. The study provides an overview of the literature of existing measurement methods that have been used in psychology and neuroscience to assess individual variations in design making, and highlight these different measurement methods’ strengths and weaknesses. We conclude with a comparative evaluation of the different measures and provide suggestions regarding their constructive use in building realistic theories of designer’s decision making measurement.

summary Building performance simulation (BPS) is the basis for informed decision-making of Net Zero Energy Buildings (NZEBs) design. This paper aims to investigate the use of building performance simulation tools as a method of informing the design decision of NZEBs. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of a simulation-based decision aid, ZEBO, on informed decision-making using sensitivity analysis. The objective is to assess the effect of ZEBO and other building performance simulation (BPS) tools on three specific outcomes: (i) knowledge and satisfaction when using simulation for NZEB design; (ii) users’ decision-making attitudes and patterns, and (iii) performance robustness based on an energy analysis. The paper utilizes three design case studies comprising a framework to test the use of BPS tools. The paper provides results that shed light on the effectiveness of sensitivity analysis as an approach for informing the design decisions of NZEBs.

summary Increasingly, the ubiquity of satellite imagery has made the data analysis and machine learning of large geographical datasets one of the building blocks of visuospatial intelligence. It is the key to discover current (and predict future) cultural, social, financial and political realities. How can we, as designers and researchers, empower citizens to understand and participate in the design of our cities amid this technological shift? As an initial step towards this broader ambition, a series of creative web applications, in the form of visual search engines, has been developed and implemented to data mine large datasets. Using open sourced deep learning and computer vision libraries, these applications facilitate the searching, detecting and curating of urban objects. In turn, the paper proposes and formulates a framework to design truly citizen-centric creative visual search engines -- a contribution to citizen science and citizen journalism in spatial terms.

This case study focuses on lighting simulation for the specific problem of solar energy harvesting. Inspired by the phototropic mechanism, the ability of plants to grow according to the availability of light, an innovative design technique is defined, taking its root in the morphogenetic design school [Hensel, 2004].

summary From the recent advent of scripting tools integrated into commercial CAAD software and everyday design practice, the use of programming applied to an architectural design process becomes a necessary field of study. The presented research explores the use of programming as explorative and reflexive medium (Schön, 1983) through the development of a programming framework for architectural design. Based on Java, the ANAR+ library is a parametric geometry environment meant to be used as programming interface by designers. Form exploration strategies based on parametric variations depend on the internal logic description, a key role for form generation. In most commercial CAD software, geometric data structures are often predefined objects, thus constraining the form exploration, whereas digital architectural research and teaching are in need for an encompassing tool able to step beyond new software products limitations.

summary This paper introduces a JAVA based library for parametric modeling through programming. From the recent advent of scripting tools integrated into commercial CAAD software and everyday design practice, the use of programming applied to an architectural design process becomes a necessary field of study. title Constraint-based support for negotiation in collaborative design

summary Solution spaces are proposed, instead of single solutions only, to support collaborative tasks during design and construction. Currently, partners involved in construction projects typically assign single values for sub-sets of variables and then proceed, often after tedious negotiations with other partners, to integrate these partial solutions into more complete project descriptions. We suggest the use of constraint solving to express possibly large families of acceptable solutions in order to improve the negotiation process in two ways. On one hand, con ict detection can be performed in an automated manner. Through the constraints collaborators impose, they de ne large unfeasible areas where no solution to the problem at hand can be expected. An emty intersectidon of the solution spaces can thus point at a con ict of design goals of the di erent collaborators at an early stage of the design process. On the other hand, important decision support during negotiation is provided. When a solution space is found, collaborators know during negotiation that they are negotiating about feasible solutions. Negotiation is no longer a means to nd a solution to the problem but it takes place in order to nd a good or the best solution. Since the consistency of the design remains ensured, collaborators are expected to be less restrictive towards innovative ideas during negotiation. Moreover, constraint techniques using explicit representations of solution spaces can provide tools to visualize trade-o s and illustrate the impact of certain decisions on other parameters. Thus decision-making is improved during the negotiation. New algorithms have been developed at EPFL for solving multi-dimensional nonlinear inequality constraints on continuous variables. Together with intuitive user interfaces such constraint-based support leads to better change management and easier implementation of least commitment decision strategies. It is expected that the results of this research can improve both the e ciency of negotiation processes and the quality of the achieved results.

summary Sustainability issues are increasingly taking more prominent positions in the hierarchy of design decisions. The combination of linked digital analysis and parametric design has emerged as an integrated method of assimilating performative characteristics into design. As these “informed design” methods evolve there is an increasing ability for architectural geometry to be rationalized, whether this is for reasons of constructive optimization, or environmental and economic justification. But the macro scale approach to geometry in design is only one mediator of the designs impact in its surroundings. This paper discusses what happens when designers fundamentally question the role of materials in design, and specifically what happens when “new” materials and their performative characteristics can be modelled and implemented into the digital design decision process. These approaches are showcased in “proof of concept” projects that have been developed using digital design and production technologies, in collaboration with material scientists and industry.

summary In recent years, sensors and sensor networks have been broadly employed in buildings to monitor diverse aspects of the built environment. Sensors are commonly used to track indoor and outdoor climatic variables such as humidity, temperature, and solar radiation; and to recognize patterns in the activity of people. We propose that in addition to this common instrumental role, data gathered from sensors could also play an important aesthetic and cultural role in the design of engaging architectural spaces. We describe a design study that explores the use of sensor data as a means to qualitatively differen-tiate between spaces within the building, a role traditionally performed by architectural ornament.

summary The paper presents a teaching experiment using the LOGO language to introduce geometric programming to architectural students with no a priory coding knowledge. Based on extreme simplicity as well as instant visual feedback, the language allows to introduce core programming concepts with little technicality. The extension of the language to a 3D space triggers designers interest and creativity while the introduction of a simple robotic drawing machine confront them with a simple fabrication context. These elements concur to develop a critical approach of the use of digital tools in the architectural design process, with the underlying aim to raise the students awareness on the implication of tooling on their design practice.

summary The use of digital design and fabrication technology for the integration of joints into timber plate structures has been the subject of recent research in the field of architectural geometry. While most of research has been focused on joint geometries, assembly sequences, and the fabrication of smaller prototypes, there have been few implementations in buildings. This paper illustrates the challenges for such a process and offers our solutions for implementing it at a building scale through the example of a theater hall built from cross-laminated timber plates. The building achieves its column-free span of 20 meters with a plate thickness of only 45 mm through a form-active lightweight structure system. It combines prismatic and antiprismatic folded surfaces and a double-layered cross-section with integrated thermal insulation.

Therefore we have to talk about realities and we will confront you with a few, but important, aspects which influence our work, both as architects and as teachers. The built environment all over Europe is the result of an enormous growth in the last 50 years. During this period, in Switzerland around 65 % of our building were produced. In countries, which were devastated by World-War-II the percentage must be even higher.
