The resulting maps of this work intend to be study object for understanding urban space of Salvador and how the city can address its growth and development.

summary Visualization is a tool that can aid understanding of phenomenon, process and spatial structures. Another important function is communication, in urban applications case, between planners, technicians, administrators, researchers and citizens. Recent technological development applied to visualization area increments analyze and interpretation capacity. The word visualization used here, is related with the use of computation for data exploration in a visual form, helping comprehension. It is a process of transformation of raw data in images, in information and visual communication. GIS and cartography precede computers. In it development GIS benefited from information technologies development and in this process emphasis goes from treatment of great amount of data to analyze of that data. Computer graphics make possible process and present visually great volume of data, thing that was not possible by conventional methods. Digital data are the key for the plain utilization of potential already available with geoprocessing technologies. Information that interest urban planners came from several sources and information technologies beside integration and manipulation permit visual analyze of spatial data in diverse aspects, from witch the most evident but not less effective a map, tool that let us correlate a great variety of qualitative and quantitative data, for organization, interpretation, presentation and communication. In digital cartographic basic elements of cartographic science were preserved, but through new products, each one execute one of the roles that traditional map plays in different ways. Database replace paper map as way of geographical information storage and cartographic visualization replaces a second role - understanding and explanation - that was satisfied by printed maps. Salvador is one of the most important brazilians metropolis. The project that we discuss have as targets construction of salvador database to permit understanding of urban space through use of thematic cartography. Several steps of project include data acquisition, database formation using data conversion and results visualization through interactive, hypermedia and thematic cartography.

title Geographic information website: the GeoPortal project

summary This paper presents a project that had as objective to complete a conceptual design of a Geographical Information portal for Bahia State, in Brazil. The GeoPortal is an important Spatial Data Infrastructure component that fairly diffuses the spatial data and geographical information that government and private sector collect and maintain. Nowadays Internet is the best way to give visibility to efforts to know and deal with events and objects that occurs in the geographical space. The portal has to convey information about spatial data (metadata) and to provide links to distributed spatial databases and all geodata site producers. It is showed here technological solutions proposed. The geoportal has been designed as a way to lay prime foundations to the Bahia State Spatial Data Infrastructure by improving geographical data and information visibility. Additionally it will offer new e-Government services in the future. [Full paper in Portuguese]

summary This project had as goal to investigate how an urban space can be represented, and how can we to present information that facilitated broad and interactive spatial analysis in an easy and friendly way. This target was reached trough the elaboration of a computer application that allowed urban information visualization about Salvador City. This tool let users to build thematic cartography, visualize interactive 3D models, images, etc. Project development already produced two different prototypes. First versions provide a great spatial analyze flexibility, but it interface founded in a workspace defined do not allow user to do all overlayer possible. In this case the tool was a kind of cartographic atlas. The actual version had as design presuppose, to give users more information, interactivity, power and flexibility, adopting new medias, new representation models, and presenting quantitative and qualitative information.

summary Cooperative Atelier of Digital Simulation is a teaching proposal in that information technologies will be used intensively in the process of architectural design, particularly computer technologies for habitat simulation. In the first learning group, a experimental one - that should begin in the semester 2001.2, the computer will be used as an instrument for modeling, information management (spatial or not), making presentations, evaluation of alternatives and taking decisions, as well as for communication between the students’ teams and teachers of FAUFBA and, of other institutions that come to be integrating the project. The computer technologies could stand for the development of cooperative works. This paper synthesizes the proposal of creation of an optional discipline for students of Architecture and Urbanism.

summary This study is part of a research project that investigates forms of visualization and representation of the urban space. The focus is to represent part of the city of Salvador – the port area – that permits the understanding of what this area is today and what it was in the past. Therefore, the problem is to represent an urban area in different times. It will be used several instruments and media to build this representation, which will have as a standard support the interpretation of historic iconography. Besides it will also need other devices as the actual digital cartography available, historic maps, e.g. The final objective is to integrate the new models within a three-dimensional model of the city of Salvador, built in a previous project and through an interactive application that will permit the user navigates in the urban space within time. summary Before popularity of GIS a map is a tool with two basic functions - storage of spatial data and presentation of spatial information. Now, a digital database store spatial data and cartographic visualization is how spatial information usually is presented. Recent technological development applied to visualization area can increase analyse and interpretation capacity of professionals concern with urban planning, design and management. In other hand, many professionals and students involved with urban studies are not familiar with GIS software and this can limit casual users to access urban databases. One solution is to build software that allows direct visualization of spatial information based in users needs and knowledge. The project discussed in this paper introduces a computer application structured like a hypermedia atlas using concepts from cartographic modelling. The city of Salvador is represented by a model based in a combination of maps, and others images. User composes visualization.

summary The present approach regards the discussion of matters related to the design of space as a complex system. The main question is how to design space as emergence from subject’s trans-actions in mixed realities environments. The present work is part of the Clarissa Ribeiro’s PhD research at ECA.USP – School of Arts and Communications, University of Sao Paulo, Brazil.
