summary Natural surveillance is one key factor proposed, in the approach to decrease fear of crime. Building fenestrations and outdoor spaces like terrace, balconies and verandas that extend the interior spaces and the indoor activities, beyond the closed external shell of the buildings, are proposed by CPTED, in their place specific policy guidelines, to help design out fear and crime. In this background, this study on natural surveillance opportunities, explores typological variations of these component outdoor spaces of buildings, in line with variations in size and location. The affordances considered for this study specifically focus on the ways in which these spaces structure the visual fields for the external observer. This paper thus reports the survey of visual preferences exploring the spatial affordances of building spaces and their association with fear of crime.

title Emergent Form from Structural Optimisation of the Voronoi Polyhedra Structure

summary In the course of the exploration of computational means in the architectural design process, in order to investigate more complex, adaptive geometries, the Voronoi diagram has recently gained some attention, being a three-dimensional space-filling structure which is modular but not repetitive. The project looks at the Voronoi diagram as a load-bearing structure, and whether it can be useful for structural optimisation. Hereby the edges of the Voronoi polyhedra are regarded as structural members of a statical system, which then is assessed by structural analysis software. Results seem to indicate that the Voronoi approach produces a very specific structural as well as spatial type of order. Through the dislocation of the Voronoi cells, the statical structure becomes more complex through emergent topology changes, and the initially simple spatial system becomes much more complex thorough emerging adjacencies and interconnections between spaces. The characteristics of the emerging form, however, lie rather in the complexity how shifted spaces and parts are fitted together, than in a radical overall emergent geometry. Spatially as well as a structurally, the form moves from a simple modular repetitive system towards a more complex adaptive one, with interconnected parts which cannot stand alone but rather form an organic whole.

summary This study describes the digital color design process using emotional words. The design process proposed in this paper consists of three steps: color scheme selection, color arrangement, and design evaluation. The application of the color design process is to design the landscape of the village. It is much more complicated to assign colors to already existing buildings in a village than to a single building. The originality of this study is that the design process suggests a solution to solve this complex color design problem using numerical evaluation of the generated design. A case study was developed to show the potential of the proposed digital color design process. Through the case study, the utility and potential of the digital design process were demonstrated.

summary Ashen Cabin, designed by HANNAH, is a small building 3D-printed from concrete and clothed in a robotically fabricated envelope made of irregular ash wood logs. From the ground up, digital design and fabrication technologies are intrinsic to the making of this architectural prototype, facilitating fundamentally new material methods, tectonic articulations, forms of construction, and architectural design languages. Ashen Cabin challenges preconceived notions about material standards in wood. The cabin utilizes wood infested by the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) for its envelope, which, unfortunately, is widely considered as ‘waste’. At present, the invasive EAB threatens to eradicate most of the 8.7 billion ash trees in North America (USDA, 2019). Due to their challenging geometries, most infested ash trees cannot be processed by regular sawmills and are therefore regarded as unsuitable for construction. Infested and dying ash trees form an enormous and untapped material resource for sustainable wood construction. By implementing high precision 3D scanning and robotic fabrication, the project upcycles Emerald-Ash-Borer-infested ‘waste wood’ into an abundantly available, affordable, and morbidly sustainable building material for the Anthropocene. Using a KUKA KR200/2 with a custom 5hp band saw end effector at the Cornell Robotic Construction Laboratory (RCL), the research team can saw irregular tree logs into naturally curved boards of various and varying thicknesses. The boards are arrayed into interlocking SIP façade panels, and by adjusting the thickness of the bandsaw cut, the robotically carved timber boards can be assembled as complex single curvature surfaces or double-curvature surfaces. The undulating wooden surfaces accentuate the building’s program and yet remain reminiscent of the natural log geometry which they are derived from. The curvature of the wood is strategically deployed to highlight moments of architectural importance such as windows, entrances, roofs, canopies, or provide additional programmatic opportunities such as integrated shelving, desk space, or storage.

summary The aim of this paper is to examine how a museum exhibition can allow barrier-free access and engagement of visitors. This paper will discuss Immersive Legacies, an exhibition that presented the digital documentation and virtual representations of a significant heritage building, both physically and in virtual reality. Through the examination of the exhibition, Immersive Legacies and its broader museological context, this paper will discuss the emergence of these technologies in museums and its relation to the Anthropocene epoch. In an age of rapid advancement and destruction, it becomes essential to preserve heritage sites, architecture and cultural objects. Furthermore, connection and communication were, and continue to be facilitated by the technologies that began in the Anthropocene epoch. As a result of this era, heritage can be experienced anytime and anywhere, although it remains vital for citizens to have the opportunity to experience it in museums. In turn, this paper will examine how these technologies can be to help citizens understand and engage with heritage and the past in museums - now and in the future.

summary This research developed an immersive, multi-dimensional Virtual Experience of the 'Gordon Wilson Flats', a Modern apartment block constructed during the 1950s in Wellington, New Zealand. The project explored methods to virtually reconstruct the spatial qualities of the building and document the flats in both their current and original states within the context of Wellington City. This digital heritage project documents both the tangible and intangible characteristics of the building to inform public discussion focused upon the flats. This approach was in an effort to capture the effect of time on the buildings tangible elements, and with the addition of oral histories, develop a narrative which is intended to facilitate architectural understanding and heighten engagement within the immersive virtual environment. This paper presents a digital methodology for the creation of a digital heritage experience with the purpose of engaging and informing public discussion.
