summary With the growing reliance on technology and other visual media to explore architectural ideas, has architectural pedagogy realigned itself with the evolving possibilities of the new technological age? With the above in mind, we designed a program to explore and test this question. The programs encouraged experimentation and speculation. Technology was seen to be central to the program. The starting point was the selection of an activity. Each stage of the process required the student to firstly, carefully observe, then to create an image utilizing different ‘medium’ to realize their observations. The chosen mediums were cubism, movie making and digital imaging. Conventional plans and sections were required to be made of each final outcome, of each stage. As part of and in response to each progressive stage, a space to house an element of the activity was designed. The concluding part required the design of a small urban building to accommodate the activity selected.

summary Digital technologies and processes have been used to generate architectural form for over two decades. Recent advances in digital technologies have allowed virtual digital environments to be constructed from physical movement. But can a bridge that connects the physical and virtual realms be developed? Can this, currently arbitrary form making be grounded in human activity and subsequently be integrated in to real time, space, and place. This research asks how space generated from the process of digital morphogenesis can be related to meaning beyond just the creation of form. Existing research asks how new form can be discovered, or what material and structural possibilities can be derived from form, through these morphological processes. The aim of this research project is to complete the loop, physical–virtual–physical, and to connect these digital processes to meaning through human activity. Its aim is to discover the consequences of generated spatial envelopes that are manipulated through digital morphogenesis and related to specific human activity, in the pursuit of possibilities for a digitally generated architecture that is socially engaged. This is not random form finding, wherein architecture tries to imitate biological processes or form, but form finding that is connected to a primary architectural concern, how is the architecture being used by humans.

summary It is beyond the question that protection of monuments of architecture and its unique beauty, through ‘re-use’ of values, emphasizing the qualities for new, modern function, but with the maximum respect for the original feature and preserving historic substance in the adaptation process is one of the requirements of the twenty first century. The analysis of the example of adapting historical objects - Hugger’s Brewery to a new function, may lead to conclusion whether that adapted object can still be named a historic building. Is it an industrial heritage or is it nothing more than a creation – an artificial space? How far can we go in the ‘re-using’? Where is the boundary?

title Communicative Profiles - Generative Art Applied in Information Access Interfaces

summary The path of ubiquitous computing and the domain of ambient intelligence are expected to stimulate emergence of new interaction paradigms. There is a need to develop adequate means of natural communication with an intelligent information system. This, presumably, requires a more integrated development of form and function of the interface. The interface design concept proposed in this paper is based on an evolutionary mechanism and it aims at development of an interactive and adaptive animation system. It is proposed that through a coherent process of adaptation of a system functionality and its appropriate visualization, a personalized and more natural experience of interaction might be achieved.

title The Side Effect of a Generative Experiment

summary This paper discusses the issue expressed in the call for the Generative Art 2002 conference that says: "GA is identifiable as one of the most advanced approaches in creative and design world." In this paper the value of Generative Art for the art, science and design worlds is described in the reference to a generative experiment. The experiment has been conducted in industrial environment with the aim of defining possibilities for natural interaction of humans with machines. In specific, the experiment examined an option for visual adaptation in accordance to user feedback. In the context of the experiment's outcome the issue of recognizability of Generative Art values is discussed. Generative Art can be identified but is not widely recognized as "one of the most advanced approaches in creative and design world". What makes it difficult for designers to switch to generative thinking and accept immediately Generative Art as the possible way of advancing traditional design methods? And what makes it promising to keep searching for ways of application of Generative Art in contemporary design? Some possible answers, proposed in this paper, aim at contributing to the discussion about the changing role of artists and designers in the contemporary society.

summary In the period 1945-1989, the spatial transformation of Lodz was accompanied by the development of hospital facilities, which are an essential part of cultural heritage of the post-war history of the city. They represent a set of cultural, ethical and aesthetic standards of their time, the knowledge and acceptance of which may play a key role in the development of the tradition of the city. The studies and efforts made to systemize the advantages of the discussed architecture as well as its popularization are an urgent issue, due to the currently occurring intensive and, to a large extent, uncoordinated processes of transforming hospitals built after 1945. It is worth emphasizing that the post-war Lodz architecture is a kind of excellent historic record deserving common acceptance, thorough documentation and protection.
