summary The display of shaded polygons by line, cross-hatch, and dot patterns on vector devices is a task frequently used in computer graphics and computer cartography. In applications such as the production of shaded maps polygon shading turns out to be critical with respect to time requirements, and the development of efficient algorithms is of importance. Given an arbitrary polygon in the plane without self-crossing edges (simply-connected polygon), the task at hand is to shade this polygon with one or two sets of parallel lines where for each set a shading angle and a line distance are given. The basic concept of this new algorithm is to decompose the polygon into a set of mutually exclusive trapezoids (in special cases triangles) where the parallel edges of the trioxides are parallel to the desired shading lines. These trapezoids and triangles are then shaded in a fast procedure. In its present form the algorithm handles regions with up to 300 islands. Possible extensions include the construction of dash and cross patterns

summary Recent developments in responsive electroactive materials are increasing the rate at which next-generation fašade technologies can respond to environmental conditions, building energy demands, and the actions of building occupants. Simulating the real-time performance of dynamic fašade systems is critical for understanding the impacts that occupant response will have on whole-building energy performance and architectural design. This paper describes a method for real-time analysis of the multi-zone building performance impacts of occupant interaction with a dynamic fašade system, the Electroactive Dynamic Display System (EDDS). The objective is to optimize EDDS implementation and define system limitations, incorporate EDDS as a dynamic factor in multi-zone building energy analyses, and provide real-time feedback of building performance data based on environmental conditions and occupant interactions. Preliminary results of parametric simulation methods demonstrate the ability of dynamic fašade systems to consider real-time occupant interaction in the analysis of daylighting and thermal performance of buildings.

summary Full-scale mock ups have a long and successful history within the architectural profession. There is consensus that future users as well as professionals are better able to make design decisions in full-scale and in real time. Full-scale analogue simulation must be implemented as part of a typical design process for the sake of our clients as well as the sake of the profession: the cost of doing anything less is enormous. Altonview believes it is possible to develop an economical, flexible and utilitarian architectural environmental system (AES) which can be used, with modifications, by all professionals. Additionally, the media needs to take an interest in the AES movement, which will change their focus from the building image to the user. American architectural schools need to increase their interest in AES as well. The AES movement can be closely linked with the zeitgeist that will define the next century as seen in further examples and references from the popular press.

summary This collaborative research project demonstrates the viability of using robotic fabrication and industrial polymer technologies in the fabrication of highly versatile and individually designed acoustically performative walls. Driven by the formal parameters which significantly impact the acoustics of a space through diffusion, in particular differentiated and aperiodic surface depth, a customizable system and fabrication process was developed in which an injection moulded element and a secondary insert are placed uniquely by robot and then joined through a process of ultra-sonic welding.
