summary Brazil has so many historical cities with important architectural heritage. Some of them are remains of the colonial times and aggregate beautiful buildings such as, palaces, public buildings and churches in baroque style, legacy of the Portuguese colonization. Despite of its cultural value, most of these building sets are under several kinds of threats. This paper discusses about the experience on digital photogrammetric restitution of the building façades of Pelourinho, a neighborhood in the historical center of Salvador, the capital city of the State of Bahia. The architectural documentation is an important way to preserve and safeguard its memory, besides being an effective educational process about the meaning of preservation and cultural heritage.

summary This paper describes the Pelourinho Project realized past July in Salvador, during the 1st International Conference on 3D Laser Scanning for Heritage Documentation. The Pelourinho located at the historic center of Salvador, is an impressive wide set of buildings listed by UNESCO as World Heritage. The text contains a quickly overview about the 3D laser scanning technology, shows how data are captured and what they stored and what they means. The 3D laser scanning model, another kind of 3D geometric model is called point cloud and represents an excellent way to store data of some particular constructions. Because its irregular shapes it is very arduous to survey and represent these constructions by any other method. The point cloud model is an excellent way to represent with integrity and accuracy these particular complex shapes like the colonial baroque churches in Brazil. [Full paper in Portuguese]

summary The present article aims to discuss the application of the digital technologies in the preservation and management of cultural heritage development. The GIS is used by the international agencies heritage like UNESCO. The GIS applications that are largely applied in built cultural heritage are internationally known as Heritage Information System – HIS. In HIS, the space configuration of the historical sites is represented by a map or for a DTM, with the quantitative and qualitative attributes, 3D geometric models and hypermedia products. Their visualization are enriched by techniques of virtual reality and published in the web.

summary This paper tries to evaluate the quantitative e qualitative aspects of the uses of the computational simulation for the analysis of enclosed environments light designs, and its feasibility in teaching in Architectural and Urbanism courses. The importance of this paper is associated with the determining of the illumination levels and its effects. Simulations were made with the Lightscape software in a specific room and their results were compared with the experimental measurements taken in that place. From this comparison it was possible to make the analysis of the software characteristics and to evaluate the advantages or disadvantages of its uses. The results confirm its feasibility as a tool for illumination simulation and its adequate uses in the teaching of environmental comfort. The good correlation achieved in visual effects derived from the lighting design and also the information of values related to illuminance and luminance for the simulated space support this affirmative.

summary This article is about the experience in the use of digital threedimensional models as an auxiliary tool in the phase of diagnosis on an architecture project of restoration. At first it deals with the importance and the methodology usually used in development of those projects. After telling about an experience that urged to look for new solutions, it was made a first exercise searching a new tool. It had about positive points the fact of being modeled quickly, to have made possible a clear vision of the pathologies and for being easily manipulable, providing a dynamic visualization of the construction. Another experience looked for the possibilities of analysis and quantification of damages in a photorealistic model. Afterwards analyzing the different potentials and restrictions of each accomplished experiment, this work looks for point out news ways that can be followed.

summary This paper presents a brief project process and representation techniques retrospective along the history, discussing the technologies used to support this process and evaluating its application, considering the practical needs and requirements that should be assisted by them in each moment of the humanity’s development, showing the interdependence relationship among the available project tools and the resultant products. It discusses a range of computational and information technologies that are potentially useful for the project process and could indeed contribute for the product improvement and for the process rationalization. The use of “new technologies” in the different phases and stages of the project process are discussed. Finally, it stands out the attention for the configuration of a new project language based in the massive use of computational technologies, as a tool capable to assist the current demands imposed by the society that comprehends: quality, productivity, competitiveness and others actual paradigms.

summary This paper discusses the experience of the initial phase of introduction of the BIM paradigm in the undergraduate program in Architecture and Urbanism (evening course) of FAUFBA. We started from the premise that BIM should be adopted gradually and integrated with the various subjects of the course, and should be initiated through the disciplines of graphic representation. The proposal for this course is presented and practices are discussed, as they were experienced in the discipline of Computing and Design II, which deals with this paradigm. It was observed that BIM process requires significant changes, as it encountered some initial resistance from the students. However, this approach increases the understanding of building and facilitates the project documentation. Furthermore, the understanding of the scope of the paradigm was crucial to the effective use of the adopted tool.

summary In this article we discuss the use of photographic panoramas in the capture of urban space and architecture. The picture is a dynamic and interactive model, which has been used as a tool that assists the apprehension of space, due to its high level of realism. When associated with the virtual tour, this tool is potentialized due to the amount of information that can be added to the application. To illustrate this analysis, two examples were offered at different scales: one aimed at the capture of urban spaces and the second aimed at architectural spaces. In doing so it was possible to compare results and discuss the potential of the tool.

summary The present work integrates the ongoing Master Degree Research Project entitled "Damage Map Representation and Pathology Database (Cronidas) Creation". This paper aims to discuss the search for alternatives in the development of a map of damages to be applied on historical buildings in order to assist preservation and restoration projects. Orthophotos of the facades and of the internal walls of buildings will be produced; once generated, these images are vectorized and transformed in drawings which represent the pathologies, in other words, the damage map. The research the following softwares: PhotoModeler®Pro5 for the generation of the orthophotos, Photoshop®CS3 for image treatment, and AutoCAD®2008 for tracing the relevant areas.

summary This paper treats the technology to generate point clouds from photographs, more known as Dense Stereo Matching (DSM) or Structure from Motion (SfM), among other terminologies. The article presents the concepts, basic principles and architectural survey phases with DSM: planning, data acquisition, processing and post-processing to obtain other products from point cloud data. Then, we present several existing software for DSM, classified in three categories: web-based tools, free software/opensource and commercial software. Finally, we discuss the potentialities of this new technologies for architectural documentation and compare DSM with 3D laser scanning.

summary This paper presents an experiment using digital photogrammetry for the restitution of urban forms, using precise and low cost techniques, an alternative solution for the cartographic actualization of cities. The technique uses digital cameras (non-metric), with resolution compatible with the precision and scale required for the products. This process simplifies the acquisition of the photos, that can be taken by different places: in the ground, in the top of high buildings or by small airplanes or ultralights, in opposition of the traditional image acquisition method, done by costly aerial photogrammetric flights, realized by specialized companies.

summary Kirimurê is as Brazilian Indian Tupinambás called the Baia de Todos os Santos. Around the bay developed a region with significant agricultural production, at a time Salvador was the main export port in the Southern Hemisphere. This economic strength and its export potential were greatly due to the saveiro, a small wooden vessel with sail propulsion, which dominated these waters for a long time. Testimony of the Bahia’s history, they had great influence in the culture of Bahia. Currently, these vessels are disappearing and with them the traditional techniques of shipbuilding, intangible heritage, held in memory of the master builders. This paper presents an experience in developing the architectural shape of a complex building using geometric modeling, to house this cultural heritage.

summary This article describes the use of digital photogrammetric techniques for the survey of Chapel Nossa Senhora da Escada, declared heritage by IPHAN . Institute for National Artistic and Historical Heritage . in 1962. It is one of the firsts chapels built in Brazil, in the middle of sixteenth century. In this paper, we present and discuss the procedures used in this building surveying, since the planning of the measurements until the creation of the photorealistic model in PhotoModeler software. Finally, the accuracy of the 3D model is verified using control points measured by topographical methods.

summary The architectural documentation of historical sites using digital technologies produces a huge database which may be difficult to access by the local community because of academic language or technical issues. Local community involvement on Cultural Heritage questions has been strongly discussed and represents an important challenge for historical sites preservation. This work proposes to create a website for divulgation of architectural documenting data from Rio de Contas to the local community and specialized users. Using appropriated technologies, relevant metaphors and friendly interfaces it will be possible to encourage the public interest on cultural heritage preservation.

summary This article discusses the development of GIS technologies applied to the management of sets of historical sites and single buildings, what is called in international literature HIS, or heritage information systems. With HIS it is possible to represent a historical site through a map or a DTM, which associate attributes from the historical buildings. For the conceptual modeling ontological studies were adopted to define the concepts and relationships with the application’s domain. The software ArcGIS was adopted as the development tool for the HIS, as well as the geographic database that stores the base map.
