title Geographic Information Database for Landscape Evaluation

summary In a landscape evaluation of a large-scale facilities construction such as garbage disposal facilities, it is necessary to grasp landscape characteristics of the area that is able to observe object facilities. This landscape characteristic consists of both a geographical characteristic (landscape resources, public space, districts designated by various urban planing laws, etc.) and a visual characteristic (visibility / invisibility range, distance from the object). The facilities design with consideration for landscape requires a geographic information database for the landscape characteristic, which enable planners to share the geographic information in the area. Authors proposed Network-based Dynamic Evaluation Process for urban landscapes in CAADRIA98, and illustrated the need of the common place that shares geographic information in the process. The system has function to provide the information of the area with layered maps simply. However the system developed with HTML Layer Function, that has limited to update data and boolean operate of layers. For using the system for practical purposes, it should conduct a GIS lookup and report back, via HTML. On the other hand, at present, there are various analogue thematic maps, digital maps are not prepared enough for landscape evaluation. It causes that landscape design process is not efficient. Also, a potential (importance) of viewpoints for evaluating facilities design have been defined by qualitative analysis so far, therefore a quantitative comparison of viewpoints was not available. As a solution of those problems, authors are tackling the development of Geographic Information Database (GIDB) by using GIS. In this paper authors give an outline of GIDB composed of overlaying various digital thematic maps included visual characteristic of the facilities. As a case study, in construction of the garbage disposal facilities in Kumamoto city, the important viewpoints was extracted by GIDB.

title Map-Based Repository of Image System for Sharing the Photographs in Design Studio

summary In the preparation of urban designs, it is important for the designer to understand the space feature of the project district and to obtain the design resource from the site. In our design studio, students take pictures of a point of interest (POI) in the project district and discuss the design concept of the district based on the photographs. To share the photographs obtained by the students during the field survey along with the attribute information and shooting positions, the present authors have developed a Web-based image archive system as an effective resource for a design studio. This system registers the photographs taken in the surveying district on GoogleMap and simultaneously displays the images on a three-dimensional city model. In this paper, we discuss the development of a Map-based Repository of Image (MRI) system to share the photographs of a city. Moreover, we attempt to evaluate its pedagogical effect in the design studio.

title The APEX/VPB & MAP: Graphical Design Interface and Archive for Distributed Collaboration

summary The digital tools are most convenient technologies to realize distributed collaborative design environment on the web. A lot of practical design systems have been already developed with researches in the world. On these systems, the digital bulletin board and web-map technologies are generally used to support for group-discussing and exchanging design proposals via the web. But some of them are only possible to store design materials apart on the web and the peculiar interface is not well-optimized for architectural design activities. In this paper, we discuss to develop the collaborative design system simulated of our practical group-work methods. The APEX/VPB & MAP will realize the easy information management with interactive digital bulletin board and map-based interface. Finally, we will report the results of our experimental design studio using with APEX/VPB & MAP.

summary Though there have been many successful examples of Virtual Design Studio, there still exist unsuccessful cases in which participants felt dissatisfied or even frustrated, especially at synchronous stages of design communication. A discussion that required designers to refer to 3D models was one of the situations where technical support was insufficient to satisfy the expectation of designers. Assuming that an interactive viewing of 3D models and use of a mark-up utility on a shared PC window could enhance such design communications (though this also requires network bandwidth and computational power) the author conducted experiments in design discussion between two designers to test the capability and effects of these tools for network collaborations. This paper discusses the framework and results of the experiments, and proposes the next step for system developments.

summary Since 1996, Kumamoto University has repeated several experiments to apply web-based collaborative design techniques to a junior design studio aiming to stimulate studentsí interaction in the class and to enhance their design abilities. When it became clear after a two-year experiment that writing web pages and uploading them to a web server was a barrier of communication for students, the authors developed a web-based groupware called GW-Notebook, and started using it in 1998. In the fall semester of 2000, the authors introduced a new design studio program, and tested the revised version of the groupware, GW-Notebook III. This paper discusses the features of the system, and gives an outline of the studio program and some of the findings in the studio as well as the use of the revised system.

summary Though it is the basic tasks of designers in a schematic design stage both to program design requirements and, then, to develop spatial images of a building following those programs, most CAD systems have lacked convenient utilities to interpret a program for some forms of spatial designs, or to assess developed designs referring to the prepared programs. This paper, in the first part, reviews design procedures of designers and the internal limits of the existing CAD system, and in the second part, discusses a schematic design system that the authors have developed. Presenting the case study with the system, the authors show that the system provides a convenient environment of schematic design.

summary Tools and techniques for synchronous design communication are still underdeveloped, because insufficient bandwidth of the present Internet has inhibited practical experiments. Reviewing the results of a design communication test carried out by the authors using a TCP/IP based V-LAN on ATM network, this paper discusses the proposal that synchronous communication using application sharing tools and video conferencing tools will become common in the broadband network age, in addition to the use of bulky data on remote PCs or web databases.

summary This paper discusses a model of collaborative process of architectural design and a network based group work CAD to support them. In the first part, the authors introduce a prototype system they developed to improve the environment for synchronous (interactive) design communication. summary The authors have developed a basic, interactive, primitive-instancing 3-D modeling system (CAADF), which is based on a high-speed 3-D color graphic workstation, and have tested its potential ability to support spatial design studies in an architectural design studio. After- a review of work performed by a student with the system, this paper concludes that this system provides an attractive environment for spatial design studies which conventional CAD systems have not achieved. The interactive process of 3-D modeling in perspective or isometric view images and the dynamic viewing utility are the most successful features of the system. In contrast to those advantages, the resolution of color graphic display is a limitation of the system. The authors conclude that if sufficiently many appropriate 3-D geometric primitives are supported by a CAD system, a primitive instancing method can significantly reduce the work entailed in object modeling.

summary A designer friendly CAD for a schematic design is one of the important topics of CAD studies. There were attractive preceding studies aiming to develop a CAD that intended to enable designers to have flexible design thinking and interactively manipulate representation models. This paper has the same goals of study, but focuses on the needs to support flexible and multi-aspect design thinking. Though designers normally hope to elaborate on their ideas using separate sets of representation models suitable for respective studies, a present CAD that is designed to build a single set 3D model, has limited its ability as a tool for a schematic design. Assuming this as the base concept, authors have studied to develop a prototype of a schematic design system, customizing AutoCAD R14J: Schematic Design System 98 (SDS98). It has convenient utilities both for building separate sets of representation models and for integrating and reconciling those models to build a single consolidate model. This paper discusses, the common procedures of schematic design studies, necessary functional features for SDS, a case study of the system use, and finally, the advantages and the disadvantages of the proposed system.

summary The number of Virtual Design Studio experiment that used WWW (Digital Pin-up Board) and e-mail for a synchronous communication, is rapidly increasing. There is no doubt that those media are quite helpful, but it also became clear that writing and managing pages of DPB require extra work for designers and technical staff to proceed with collaborative design. To make VDS a popular approach of collaborative design, developing convenient tools to support writing and managing pages of DPB has become inevitable. This paper discusses a prototype of group ware that supports asynchronous design communication with DPB: GW-Notebook that can be used with common web browsers on net-PCs.

summary This paper discusses a city model using the linked QTVR (cylinder-VR) technique to study relationshipsbetween people’s behavior while strolling around downtown shopping districts, and visual stimuli in eachpart of the district. At the beginning of the study, because a large city model was required, a majorobstacle was the necessity of taking a large number of photographic images of the area, especiallyimages with wide vertical view angles. The objectives of this paper are to: (a) discuss the major featuresof the simulation system and its uses for the study, (b) discuss a refined method of producing acylindrical image of QTVR allowing the operator to look up almost 56 degrees, and (c) evaluate theperformance of the developed system through experiment by 30 university students who know thedistrict well.

summary This paper reviewed the process and the achievements of a five-week-long virtual design studio project the authors carried out with three universities in Japan and the United States in the summer of 1996, in which there was no communication among team members other than network media. After analyzing the use of communication tools in different situations of design communication, and the level of communications achieved in this project, the authors concluded that the present network technology could provide sufficient levels of communication, if only participants could put forth some amount of extra effort for communication among team members.

summary This paper discusses the necessary features for a QTVR (cylinder-VR) based simulation system to study a citizen's behavior of finding their way to particular points, as well as observations found in the case studies that used several prototypes developed as a step in the studies. The authors tested prototype systems developed for a downtown shopping area of Kumamoto City, and observed answers to questionnaires in which 30 students who are familiar with the site compared the three prototypes. After observing cognitive maps sketched by nine strangers to the site, and after virtual walks with one of those prototypes: prototype-III, the authors concluded that it could provide a necessary level of visual representation and system operations as a tool for simulating citizens' travel behaviors.

In the fall semester of 2000, the authors tested the groupware in a revised version, and a new program of studio instructions that assumed the use of the groupware. This paper, referring students’ answers to two sets of questionnaire respectively carried out in 1997 and 2000, discusses the effectiveness of groupware and the instruction program.

summary There have been many successful examples of Virtual Design Studio projects that have used a variety of network communication technologies, showing that interaction among participants enhances performance of the design team. However, the application of VDS techniques to a design studio program conventionally conducted in a studio space still seems to be limited, even though there is a clear need to improve interactions among students and teaching staff. The authors developed web-based groupware, GW-Notebook, and application techniques for a design studio program to enhance interaction in class hours in a studio space and also in off-studio hours, in which members work in separate locations. This paper discusses a model of communication and interaction in a collaborative design studio program conducted in a studio space. It also considers the major features of the developed system, the environment, and method of system usage in different teaching styles, and finally reviews performances of the latest system tested at junior collaborative design studio.

summary How to integrate CAAD into design education, and how to teach CAAD as a tool of design thinking has been a difficult issue left unresolved for architecture schools. This paper discusses the possible approach to these issues which were experienced in a Japanese university. In the first section, it will summarize the present situation of CAAD education in Japan. The second section reports the framework of design education and roles of CAAD programmed in a department. The third section introduces an example of course programs and students’ work. The fourth section observes a recent outcome of experimented program, such as, students’ work, scores and some results of a student questionnaire. In the final section, it will discuss the approach that introduce different levels of CAAD usage to design studios as the level of design education advances, was successful to integrate CAAD into design education.

summary With the development of high-band width communication technology, designers’ interests seem to shift gradually from a single-user, single-domain system to a network based group-work design system. So long as one regards that the design activity develops only in a concurrent, but asynchronous fashions, it is possible to say that file transfers through computer networks have already opened up the possibility of a hands-on collaborative design process in which all participants do not have to gather in the same place. However few CAD systems support group design work that develops in a concurrent synchronous fashion. This paper discusses a basic model of group work CAD systems that the authors have developed for windows PCs linked with LAN. Reviewing procedure of system operation, the authors conclude that the system could stimulate and accelerate a process of group wok design.
