title The cybernetic imagination of computational architecture

summary Since the publication in 1948 of Norbert Wiener’s Cybernetics, this thought model has exerted a profound influence in contemporary knowledge. Such influence has been decisive for a paradigm shift in the profession of architecture and particularly for the rise of a computational perspective in architectural design. This article explores the link between the cybernetic paradigm and the conception of architectural objects as performative, responsive, intelligent, and sentient artifacts—the visions of buildings that have been central to the development of digital architecture since its early stages. This connection shows that the dominant visions of design problems associated with the development of a computational perspective in architecture have not been exclusively the result of the introduction of computer pragmatics in architectural design. On the contrary, following such scholars as Bruno Latour and Katherine Hayles, these developments must be considered as the result of a particular feedback process that includes technical aspects as well as the definition of design problems around an informational ontology and epistemology. The understanding of the intellectual foundations of digital architecture is crucial not only to promote a critical regard of its productions but to imagine scenarios for a viable cybernetic practice of computer-mediated architectural design.

title Designer-Client Collaboration in Architectural and Software Design

summary An upper-level undergraduate architectural design studio and a graduate computer science CAD course were paired to study client-designer interactions. The dual nature of these courses led to two sets of products: building designs compatible with the specifications of the clients, and prototype CAD tool to assist architects in the conceptual design phases. First, the computer scientists acted as clients to the architects, who designed a building for the computer science department. Once the computer science students had become familiar, through observation, with the architectural design process, they began developing tools for the architects' use. In that reversed-role, the architects became the clients of the computer scientists. For both parties this interaction provided an opportunity to experience the social aspects of the design process, in particular, the designer-client relationships, which most often are absent in traditional educational settings. This paper describes the objectives of this integrated pair of courses, the methods and processes used, and some of the results.

title Generation of 3D building models from 2D architectural plans

summary A robust, semi-automatic way is presented to create 3D polyhedral building models from computer-drawn floor plans, requiring minimal user interaction. The modelsadhere to a consistent solids representation and can be used for computer rendering, visualization in interactive walkthroughs, and in various simulation and analysisprograms. The output of our prototype program is directly compatible with the Berkeley WALKTHRU system and with the NIST CFAST fire simulator. A consistentmodel of a seven-storey building with more than 300 rooms has been generated in the time span of a few days from original AutoCAD floor plans drawn by architects.

title Using the SAMR Model to transform mobile learning in a History of Art and Architecture Classroom

summary This paper presents the progress of a pilot classroom, which uses mobile devices to enhance instructor-student classroom interac- tions and students’ learning of the History of Art and Architecture. The main objective of this research was to find a way of improving classroom activities, for the coming year, by making the best possible use of technology to enable students to learn more successfully and improve their understanding of the lesson content. In this paper, class- room activities during 2014 and 2015 are analysed using the SAMR Model coupled with Bloom’s revised taxonomy and the EdTech Quin- tet Model. In addition, a plan for the redesign and improvement of ac- tivities in 2016 is proposed, the effectiveness of the SAMR model at improving in class activities is discussed and a perspective on how to develop the classroom using the “SAMR ladder” is included. The re- sults show that in 2015, 25% of the students in the class achieved an A grade, and less than 5% were graded F compared to 26% in 2012.
