summary This paper presents a body of research that explores the ways in which computer vision is being paired with big data collection engines to map/simulate the physical environment in digital space. These algorithms are producing increasingly ubiquitous representations of 3 dimensional space which are accessed by governments, security agencies, private citizens and in the context of this paper, designers. Designers often accept these simulations as highly accurate despite understanding very little about how they are produced.

title Efficient rendering of trimmed NURBS surfaces

summary An algorithm for the interactive display of trimmed nurbs surfaces is presented. The algorithm converts the nurbs surfaces to Bézier surfaces, and nurbs trimming curves toBézier curves. It tessellates each trimmed Bézier surface into triangles, and renders them using the triangle rendering capabilities common in current graphics systems. Itmakes use of tight bounds for the uniform tessellation of Bézier surfaces into cells and it traces the trimming curves to compute the trimmed regions of each cell. Thisoperation is based on the tracing of trimming curves, intersection computation with the cells, and triangulation of the cells. The resulting technique also makes use of spatialand temporal coherence between successive frames for cell computation and triangulation. Polygonization anomalies such as cracks and angularities are avoided as well. Thealgorithm can display trimmed models described using thousands of Bézier surfaces at interactive frame rates on high end graphics systems.

summary Since 2006, half of the world’s population lives in cities. In the age of climate change, designing for quality environmental living conditions and sustainability is a topical concern. However, on the one hand, designers and city planners operate with their three dimensional city morphological data such as building shapes and volumes, forms and their spacings, and functional attributes and definition signatures. On the other hand, urban climatologists operate with their numbers and equations, quantities and signals, and normals and anomalies. Traditionally the two camps do not meet. It is a challenge to develop design tools that they can work together. Map based information system based on computational geographic information system (GIS) that is properly structured and represented offers a common language, so to speak, for the two professional groups to work together. Urban climatic map is a spatial and graphical tool with information embedded in defined layers that are collated so that planners and urban climatologists can dialogue over design issues. With various planning and meteorological data coded in defined grid resolutions onto the GIS map system, data can be synergized and collated for various understandings. This papers explains the formulation of Hong Kong’s GIS based Urban Climatic Map as an example of how the map works in practice. Using the map, zonal and district based planning decisions can be made by planners and urban climatologists that lead to new designs and policy changes.

title Multi-modal simulation for urban mobility analysis: An approach based on a model of behaviour and infrastructure-related anomalies

summary This paper presents a distributed simulation system for urban scenarios where infrastructure anomalies are common, such as those present in Latin-American cities. A microscopic-based model has been developed in order to represent the behavioural characteristics of the different mobility actors in a discrete lattice. The visualization component allows an interactive and immersive experience of the simulation results, providing a detailed point of view (focus) in the global environment (context). It is possible to empower the users’ interaction through devices for control and navigation of the data visualization.
