title Da arquitetura paramétrica ao urbanismo paramétrico [Of parametric architecture and parametric urbanism]
source SIGraDi 2010_Proceedings of the 14th Congress of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics, pp. Bogotá, Colombia, November 17-19, 2010, pp. 419-422
summary In recent decades, there has been an extraordinary advance in the development of parametric design tools, in which the parameters of a particular object are defined, but not the objects’ shape. These technologies have been transferred from design industries to architecture and urbanism to constitute what is known as parametric urbanism, a new trend of urban design development exemplified in the work of Zaha Hadid, whose large scale urban design proposals have frequently applied parametric design tools. This paper analyses the emergence of this new urban theory in order to identify its limits and to introduce future improvements.

title Lagoa da Conceicao - Florianópolis - Ilha de Santa Catarina: Uma Paisagem em Transformacao II (Conceicao Lagoon - Florianópolis - Ilha of Santa Catarina Island: A Landscape in Transformation II)
source III Congreso Iberoamericano de Grafico Digital [SIGRADI Conference Proceedings] Montevideo (Uruguay) September 29th - October 1st 1999, pp. 157-160
summary This work presents the study and applied assays (or simulation tests) about the ordination of urban space in the region of Lagoa da Conceição. In the region pressures placed by the growth of urban area and urban network system are in contact conflict with a fragile ecosystem, and with a sustainable development based on tourism. Analysis procedures exploited different forms of Space Syntax trying to examine effects of spatial structure in relation to movement patterns of pedestrians and vehicles. This methodology allowed the comprehension of relation between spatial configuration, transport and soil use, and reveled the interdependence and performance of built space within the restrict regional scale (Lagoa da Conceição) and the total urban structure of the island. This understanding is not limited to the present. Is also includes the study of historic urban evolution, and simulation of existing projects for the future, being an important tool to support project decision process. Consequently, the obtained results bring a new approach for the problem, which makes possible the synthesis of design proposals verifying its implications and consequences.

title Fabricating Stereotomy - Variable moulds for cast voussoirs
source Fioravanti, A, Cursi, S, Elahmar, S, Gargaro, S, Loffreda, G, Novembri, G, Trento, A (eds.), ShoCK! - Sharing Computational Knowledge! - Proceedings of the 35th eCAADe Conference - Volume 2, Sapienza University of Rome, Rome, Italy, 20-22 September 2017, pp. 193-200
summary Recent developments in digital design and fabrication tools have led architects and researchers to renew the interest in stereotomy. This interest converges with a growing ecological and economical conscience that matches classic stereotomy raw material needs: compression resistance materials. However, material resources or prefabrication time are still major counterparts for the adoption of this construction system. This paper focuses in exploring techniques that profit from the interdependency between built form and fabrication technique, foraging methodologies that allow for stereotomic block creation with simpler resources. The premise is to explore faster, cheaper, more accessible ways to build stereotomic structures. The technique developed in this research explores alternatives to the traditional cutting of stone by expanding techniques for variable moulds to form solid voussoirs.

source Kepczynska-Walczak, A, Bialkowski, S (eds.), Computing for a better tomorrow - Proceedings of the 36th eCAADe Conference - Volume 1, Lodz University of Technology, Lodz, Poland, 19-21 September 2018, pp. 771-780
summary This paper describes the theory and practical experiments on the development of a system for the deployment of stereotomic voussoirs. The recent availability of digital design and fabrication tools has enabled architects to embrace stereotomic thinking, allowing for the efficient spanning of spaces with low tensile capable materials such as stone. The proposed fabrication system is an evolution of an on-going research which creates a direct link between the geometrical and material needs of a stereotomic structure with materialization tools that enable the swift creation of multiple customized blocks.

title CorkVault Aarhus: exploring stereotomic design space of cork and 5-axis CNC waterjet cutting
source Living Systems and Micro-Utopias: Towards Continuous Designing, Proceedings of the 21st International Conference on Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA 2016) / Melbourne 30 March–2 April 2016, pp. 767-776
summary This paper presents the design, fabrication, and construc- tion of CorkVault Aarhus, which was designed using parametric and physics simulation software and realized from ECA cork sheets cut using a CNC waterjet cutter. We recount the lessons learned through the intensive two-week workshop that explored the limits of the mate- rials and tools through prototypes and culminated with the assembly of the final free-form vault structure. Various vaults and arch proto- types provided pedagogical and research value, building up knowledge essential to the final structure built, a human scale pavilion designed and built in three days and made of a thin shell of cork pan- els working only in compression. Three driving concepts were crucial to the experience: stereotomy as a supporting theory, expanded cork agglomerate (ECA) as the main material and water jet cutting as the principal means of fabrication. The complex vault shape called for precise 5-axis cuts supporting a new paradigm in building stereotomic components for architecture.

summary The BIM is being gradually incorporated in education. Based on national and international reports, experiences have shown that it is not only the insertion of a technology applied to project development and construction, but it also covers significant changes involving people and processes that require collaborative, interdisciplinary and integrated practices. In this context, a study for the implementation of BIM, considering the particularities of the Architecture and Urbanism course at Unochapecó University was developed, once the curriculum is written based on these discussions. The teachers involved were interviewed for get different views on the subject and to seek contributions.

source SIGraDi 2004 - [Proceedings of the 8th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Porte Alegre - Brasil 10-12 november 2004
summary This article investigate the interplay of digital technology, art and architecture and it presents a series of experimental actions developed at LAGEAR (Graphical Lab for the Experience of Architecture at the School of Architecture of the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil). These experimental actions aimed the inclusion of an artistic approach in the daily life of a computer lab dedicated to teaching and researching architectural matters. At first it is presented a discussion on the relation of art and architecture followed by an analisis of the enhancement of the such relationship with the advent of digital technology. Then, it is described a series of works developed by artists and researchers working together to create a specific piece of art. The article concludes with a systematization and further discussion on the new possibilities that came about with the intertwining of art, architecture and digital technology.

source SIGraDi 2005 - [Proceedings of the 9th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Lima - Peru 21-24 november 2005, vol. 2, pp. 793-798
summary This paper describes the theoretical and technological parameters for a digital interface, in development by MOM/LOW (Morar de Outras Maneiras/ Living in Other Ways), intended at the autonomous production of dwelling. It introduces the current formal and informal processes of production of dwelling arguing for the need of an instrument to enable both the distribution of alternative building components and user participation. It discusses the main questions on agency and machine intelligence as to show the need to take human-machine asymmetry into account in interface design. It also points out the main problems regarding the current technology for creating 3D digital interactive interfaces, and indicates one possible way to use the available technology and locate agency in the event. It concludes by showing that interface design can take advantage of human dialogical ability and of the machine’s capacity to offer material for that dialogue, without humanising the machine or preconditioning human responses.
