summary Brazil has so many historical cities with important architectural heritage. Some of them are remains of the colonial times and aggregate beautiful buildings such as, palaces, public buildings and churches in baroque style, legacy of the Portuguese colonization. Despite of its cultural value, most of these building sets are under several kinds of threats. This paper discusses about the experience on digital photogrammetric restitution of the building façades of Pelourinho, a neighborhood in the historical center of Salvador, the capital city of the State of Bahia. The architectural documentation is an important way to preserve and safeguard its memory, besides being an effective educational process about the meaning of preservation and cultural heritage.

source SIGraDi 2005 - [Proceedings of the 9th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Lima - Peru 21-24 november 2005, vol. 2, pp. 673-678
summary This paper describes the Pelourinho Project realized past July in Salvador, during the 1st International Conference on 3D Laser Scanning for Heritage Documentation. The Pelourinho located at the historic center of Salvador, is an impressive wide set of buildings listed by UNESCO as World Heritage. The text contains a quickly overview about the 3D laser scanning technology, shows how data are captured and what they stored and what they means. The 3D laser scanning model, another kind of 3D geometric model is called point cloud and represents an excellent way to store data of some particular constructions. Because its irregular shapes it is very arduous to survey and represent these constructions by any other method. The point cloud model is an excellent way to represent with integrity and accuracy these particular complex shapes like the colonial baroque churches in Brazil. [Full paper in Portuguese]

title Salvador from the digital networks perspective
source SIGraDi 2005 - [Proceedings of the 9th Iberoamerican Congress of Digital Graphics] Lima - Peru 21-24 november 2005, vol. 2, pp. 586-590
summary This paper is part of a research study on the spatial distribution of Information and Communication Technologies in the city of Salvador. The purpose is to analyze the new tendencies in the configuration of the urban space. It intends to present the issue from a broader viewpoint and specifically analyze two Internet connection services offered in various public areas: Infocentros installed by Programa de Inclusão Digital do Estado da Bahia; and hotspot Internet connection services offered by private corporations. It is verified that the localization of such services reinforces the patterns of current spatial dispersion or concentration in the city. [Full paper in Portuguese]

title A PROCISSÃO" - Documentação Tridimensional de Arte Rupestre na Chapada Diamantina, Bahia ["THE PROCESSION" - Three-dimensional documentation of Rock Art in the Chapada Diamantina, Bahia]
source SIGraDi 2009 - Proceedings of the 13th Congress of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics, Sao Paulo, Brazil, November 16-18, 2009
summary Documentation of rock art is generally made by drawing with a marker over a plastic film overlaid to the wall of the canyon or cave where it is found. Taking out the drawing printed in the film from the wall implies in loosing important data about its contour because the image became rectified; information about the relief of the documented figure are lost as well. We have used close range photogrammetry methodology to overcome this problem and, on the other hand, to preserve information about the relief of the picture itself, taking into account the fragility of the rock support.

title AutoPave: towards an automated paving system for asphalt pavement compaction operations
source Automation in Construction 8 (2) (1998) pp. 165-180
summary Asphalt pavement density from roller compaction is a crucial factor in ensuring satisfactory pavement performance. Proper and uniform compaction of the pavement mat is essential in achieving the desired final compacted density. There is a necessity to investigate existing pavement construction practices, and provide more cost-effective modifications to the current scenario. Automation of the paving operation can increase the efficiency and quality of the operation, lead to reductions in overall project costs and time, and enhance pavement life. A system can be developed through algorithmic planning and real-time guidance strategies, and the development of a semi-automated path-planning and real-time guidance system that aims towards automating the paving operation. This system accepts relevant paving project inputs, generates appropriate path plans for the compactor, performs a graphical visualization of the generated path plan, and offers real-time guidance capabilities using Global Positioning Systems (GPS) technology. This system, named AUTOPAVE (v1.0), was developed in Microsoft Visual Basic™ programming language and offers a user-friendly and interactive graphical interface. The proposed new system will incorporate state-of-the-art GPS technology to standardize paving operations that are more amenable to rigorous quality control, and can result in considerable reductions in cost and time involved in asphalt pavement construction projects. This system was tested on several actual paving projects, and many operational issues related to the functioning of the system were successfully overcome.

title Kirimurê: uma aplicação da Modelagem Geométrica na produção da Forma Arquitetônica [Kirimurê: an application of geometric modeling on the synthesis of Architectural Form]
source SIGraDi 2009 - Proceedings of the 13th Congress of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics, Sao Paulo, Brazil, November 16-18, 2009
summary Kirimurê is as Brazilian Indian Tupinambás called the Baia de Todos os Santos. Around the bay developed a region with significant agricultural production, at a time Salvador was the main export port in the Southern Hemisphere. This economic strength and its export potential were greatly due to the saveiro, a small wooden vessel with sail propulsion, which dominated these waters for a long time. Testimony of the Bahia’s history, they had great influence in the culture of Bahia. Currently, these vessels are disappearing and with them the traditional techniques of shipbuilding, intangible heritage, held in memory of the master builders. This paper presents an experience in developing the architectural shape of a complex building using geometric modeling, to house this cultural heritage.
