summary One of the serious problems faced by the Brazilian municipalities is the scarcity of resources for building education infrastructure. This asks for an optimal allocation of the available resources that includes, among other things, a rational spatial arrangement of the supply points (i.e., schools) in order to increase the demand coverage (i.e., students). If it is possible to foresee the regions where the demand is going to be concentrated, it is then possible to plan the location of new facilities and to assess the impact on the future level of service of the entire system. Considering that one of the consequences of the location-allocation process is the distribution of trips from demand points to supply points throughout the city, therefore affecting the overall intraurban accessibility conditions to essential services such as education, there is a strong need of models that planners can rely on to predict the future trip distribution patterns. As a result, the objective of this work was to evaluate the performance of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) when applied to spatial interaction models, the so-called Neural Spatial Interaction Models. This was done in a practical context, in contrast to the more theoretical works commonly found in literature. The practical application showed that the neural spatial interaction model had different performances when compared to the traditional gravity models. In one case the neural models outperformed the gravity models, while on the other case it was just the opposite. The explanation for this may be in the data or in the ANN model formulation, as discussed in the conclusions.

summary In normative or prescriptive theories, architectural requirements are set as parameters to support design decisions. A set of formal parameters is suffice to generate a wide variety of compositions, but associated to the same formal language. This paper looks at the work of the Portuguese-Brazilian architect, Delfim Fernandes Amorim, whose contributions to the dissemination of modern ideas and the development of a particular architectural lexicon is quite relevant, particularly his addendum to the municipal land use and occupation act, which became generally known as the Amorim's Law. It consists basically in allowing spaces of transitory occupation and specific architectural elements to be built beyond the mandatory setback limits. This paper presents the development of a grammar that shows how some of the parameters described in Amorim's law are able to create a strong formal language and influence the building's architectural composition. The grammar was developed in two successive stages: the first allows the generation of the pattern of adjacency of the apartment's rooms; the second, guide the insertion of the openings and architectural elements as defined by the Amorim's Law.

The paper will try to show, in brief, that there is a real possibility of inclusion of methodological tools of design, allowing assessment of values in real time during the design actions.

summary The advent of BIM in the AECO industry brings with it profound transformations in the design process. These changes are necessary to meet the requirements of the current project market and make the traditional design process into an integrated design process. Although the advantages obtained from this practice, new job functions and standardization of communication must be embraced to ensure its success. This work presents the conception of the integrated project in BIM with its practices related to the PDP and identifies the evolution of the norms of aid to the realization of projects in BIM in Brazil.

summary The paper discusses a numerical modeling tool to evaluate thermal performance of building envelope according to Brazilian NBR15.220 and NBR 15.575 standards. Contemporary integrated design processes require the development of early design stage decision support mechanisms in order to optimize building performance. The development of the proposed tool focused on early stage decisions on building envelope design and integrating tool usability in the design process. Results indicate that the proposed tool provides basis for decision making that respond to Brazilian standards previously disregarded by participants. Also indicate improved understanding on parameters that affect building envelope thermal performance.

summary In this paper, we present preliminary specifications for a computer design tool for the application of mass customization in middle class apartment design in Brazil. Believing that in the digital era, network communication and digital design tools combined may create a design environment that considers consumer needs and preferences, we present a simple drafting of a computer tool that makes use of those concepts. And therefore we believe to contribute for the future construction of a design system that redefines problem scenarios, rather than providing individual solutions, repositioning architects and clients in the design process.

In this direction, this work reflects on the proposal of the creation of the Latin American Network or Architectural Archives (RELARQ), pioneering initiative in our continent that aims to create a basis of cooperation between the diverse Brazilian and Latin-American institutions, with the objective to congregate, in an online catalogue, accessible to all, the information contained in hundreds of institutions distributed all over the continent, that will count with a common methodological basis for digital treatment and access to the images. With the RELARQ, the area of the History of Architecture will have a new, powerful tool in as far as the researchers will be able to access archives in the most distant places of our continent.

summary This paper describes the strategies which are being used to make a digital collection available, regarding the architectural heritage of the city of Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul. Pelotas preserves architectural examples built between the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 20th century. These examples include representatives of the Luso-Brazilian architecture, eclectic, transitional eclectic and pre-modern architecture. The representation of these examples has documented and valued such heritage, subsidizing the cultural memory of the city. The production system is a supportive process of teaching, research and extension, committed to the various possibilities for applying these representations and the evolution of the technological resources available.

summary Digital fabrication has transformed the way buildings are constructed by applying methods such as friction-fit connection. This technique has been propagated by WikiHouse which aims to develop open building technologies to different environmental contexts. However, the indiscriminate use of the model may result in inefficiency of housing performance. This work, therefore, investigates solutions for adapting WikiHouses to the tropics, according to principles proposed by Armando de Holanda in ‘A Guide to Build in Northeast Brazil’. Nevertheless, difficulties related to certain adaptations were observed such as connections compatibility and design of large open spaces, especially because these systems depend on a maximum size of parts.

title A comparison of land valuation methods supported by GIS

summary The purpose of this work was to study three different strategies for the appraisal of urban land. The first, a theoretical strategy created by the authors of this study to reproduce the common conditions of Brazilian cities, uses increments and reductions in the value of a square meter of land according to each lot’s individual features. The second method, based on Multiple Regression techniques, is widely used for valuation purposes. Finally, the effectiveness of Artificial Neural Networks to deal with thiskind of problem is studied. A sample of 157 lots was collected from several neighbourhoods of a small Brazilian city for the case study. The lot features recorded were area, width, shape, distance to the downtown district of the city through the street network, existence of fences and paved sidewalks, and market price. Prediction errors have been estimated for each of the three methods in order to compare their results. Predicted and error values, added to Geographical Information Systems, may be used to build thematic maps and to check how each strategy applies to different areas of the city. The analyses of error values conducted in this study showed that Artificial Neural Networks presented the best performance as a land appraisal method for the case studied.

summary This article discusses the Brazilian architecture professional devaluation, identifying factors that contribute to a process of disqualification. It provides the basis for possible reflections by architecture councils. Authors pointed out that the BIM evolution would lead to unexplored fields, such as standards to increase project quality. The study suggests the development of an instrument that certifies services, methodologies and teams positively positioned in the contemporary demands of the AEC sector. By incorporating existing standards, the technology is justified as the basis, allowing this quality to be extended to contractors, reinforcing the multidisciplinary character with its involved professional’s responsibility.

summary Brazilian society is marked by informality, by social plasticity and a predisposition towards game and play. These characteristics are opposed to the perspectival paradigm’s principles, which are the base of modern architecture. Therefore, a modernist practice in Brazil meets an extra level of difficulty because it has to cope with these rather playful aspects. If we consider the second-order cybernetics and its conversation theory, the plasticity that characterizes Brazilian culture may stop being an obstacle and, if coupled with digital technologies, may become the very basis for a truly modern Brazilian architectural practice.

summary During the last decade, mass customization in developing countries has been rising. The combination of conventional methods and materials with computer numeric control technologies offers a possibility of merging established craftsmanship to the production of personalized components with mass production efficiency. This article aims to present the development of a facade component prototype as a means to prospect possibilities for mixing parametric design and digital fabrication to casting, especially in developing countries like Brazil. This is an applied research with an exploratory and constructive approach, which was a result of a graduate class structured on a research by design basis. The conceptual development and prototyping of the artifact followed iterative cycles, considering its performance, fabrication methods and feasibility. The selection of materials that are commonly used in Brazilian architecture, like concrete, facilitates the component adoption as as a facade solution. The main conclusion emphasizes the need of involvement between academia and industry for the development of innovative products and processes, and highlights different levels of mass customization to include a range of manufacturing agents, from major industries to local craftspeople.

summary This paper presents an investigation on the architectural, natural, and cultural resources in the southern part of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, according to their historical or environmental value, identifying natural and cultural elements known and valued by local communities, regardless their experts’ classification. Resources are identified by means of geographical information systems, combined with field information. The area comprises the coastal strip and the plains located in the last frontier of the Brazilian territory and the water system dominated by the lakes Patos, Mangueira and Mirim. The inventory of the environmental, sociocultural and economic heritage provides the necessary insight for issuing new development alternatives based on local resources. Research activities will include: the ellaboration of general and thematic maps, based on LANDSAT 5 [bands 3, 4 and 5] images; aerial photographs; DSG/SGE and municipal maps [scales 1:250.000, 1:50.000 and 1:25.000]; field work for the recognition of remarkable elements; interviews with residents for assessing their perception of local values; and community and institutional statements. These informations, comprising the elements valued by their architectural and urban quality, historical relevance and environmental significance, organised in a database, will provide contextual guidelines for the planning of a tourist route. This route, delineated by the preservation, recovery and use of representative local resources, valued as expressions of a native culture, evocates the initial occupation of the gaúcho territory, and may be touristically promoted as "The Gaúcho’s Way".
