summary Responsive architecture is one of the growing areas of computational design that is not getting adequate attention in CAAD curricula. A pedagogical approach to designing responsive systems requires more than the typical knowledge, tools or skill sets in architectural design studios. This paper presents a framework for integrating responsive and kinetic systems in the architectural design studio. The framework builds on findings of two design studios conducted at The American University in Cairo, Egypt. In both studios, students were asked to design elements of responsive architecture that work towards the development of their projects. The paper demonstrates the process and outcomes of both studios. It then demonstrates how concepts of integrated project delivery are incorporated to propose a framework that engages students in designing, fabricating and operating responsive systems in different phases of the design process. A discussion follows regarding dynamics of design studio in light of the proposed framework.

summary Since the emergence of the concept of user-generated content websites – Web 2.0, Internet communications have developed as a powerful personal and social phenomenon. Many Internet applications have become partially or entirely related to the concept of social network; and cyberspace has become a space about ‘us’ not ‘where’ we are. This paper investigates the theoretical grounds of the effect of cyber experience on changing the individuals’ uses of the public spaces, and sustaining this change through maintaining the ties and reciprocal influence between actions in physical and cyber spaces. It aims at examining the impact of cyber territories on the perception, definition and effectiveness of personal space within different circumstances; and its role in changing the uses of spaces where people used to act habitually. The personal space, here, will be represented as the core of both: change and consistency – the space of bridging the reciprocal effect of cyber and physical counterparts, which is transformed through the experience of physical events mediated into the cyberspace. The paper is part of a study which looks at the case of Tahrir Square during the Egyptian political movement in 2011. We will compare the activists’ actions and practices in the Square during different events of non-routine use of the square and its surroundings. The case study will show the level of consistency in the features of the produced personal space within different waves of the revolutionary actions for all that different circumstances, motivations and results.

summary This paper explores the use of three-dimensional simulations to investigate transformations of urban form in medieval Cairo, and lessons about using computers to support historical visualization. Our first attempt to create a single extremely detailed model of Cairo proved unworkable. From this experience we developed a database approach to organizing modeling projects of complex urban environments. The database consists of several complete models at different levels of abstraction. This approach has three advantages over the earlier one: the model is never viewed as incomplete, the framework supports both additive and subtractive chronological studies, and finally, the database is viewed as infinitely expandable. Using modeling software as a tool for inquiry into architectural history becomes more feasible with this new approach.

summary This paper represents a preliminary investigation into the appropriateness of using EnergyPlus as a simulation tool for Double-Skin Façades (DSFs) that are considered geometrically complex. It builds upon previous research conducted by the authors in which a DSF was designed and simulated for an existing office building in Cairo. For this verification, the DSF was simulated once more using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to evaluate the accuracy of the previously obtained results. The cavity temperature and the volume flow rate of the airflow provided by EnergyPlus are compared with those obtained by OpenFOAM CFD software. The results give a credible indication of the reliability of EnergyPlus and encourages further investigations. The strengths and limitations of each software are discussed.

summary One of the problems in teaching students how to design kinetic architecture is the difficulty of helping them grasp concepts like motion, physical computing and fabrication, concepts not generally dealt with in conventional architectural projects. In this paper, we introduce a pedagogical method for better utilizing prototyping and explore the role prototyping plays in learning and conceptualizing design ideas. Our method is based on building the learner’s sensory experience through iteration and focusing on the process as well as the product. Specifically, our research attempts to address the following questions: How can architecture students anticipate and feel motion while they design kinetic prototypes? How do their prototypes enable them to explore design ideas? As a case study, we applied our methodology in an 8-week workshop in a fabrication laboratory in Cairo, Egypt. The workshop was open to young architects and students who had completed at least four semesters of study at the university. We describe the pedagogical approach we developed to build the sensory experience of making motion, and demonstrate the basic setting and stages of the workshop. We show how a cyclical learning process, based on perception and action -- copying and iteration -- contributed to the students’ learning experience and enabled them to create and improvise on their own.

summary This paper investigates the integration of Building Performance Simulation (BPS) and optimization tools to provide high performance solutions. An office room in Cairo, Egypt was chosen as a base testing case, where a Genetic Algorithm (GA) was used for optimizing the annual daylighting performance of two parametrically modeled daylighting systems. In the first case, a combination of a redirecting system (light shelf) and shading system (solar screen) was studied. While in the second, a free-form “gills surface” was also optimized to provide acceptable daylighting performance. Results highlight the promising future of using computational techniques along with simulation tools, and provide a methodology for integrating optimization and performance simulation techniques at early design stages.

summary The purpose of this paper is to reach an optimal Islamic geometric pattern (IGP) shading screen design in terms of daylight and energy performance in an existing educational design studio (EDS) using generative design and simulation techniques. The study was carried out in a hot arid climate, in a typical EDS in 6th October University, located in Cairo, Egypt, and the study focused on the north-east oriented façade. Grasshopper for Rhino was utilized to generate the IGP parametric variations. Diva-For-Rhino which performs daylight analysis using Radiance / DAYSIM, and Design Builder which performs thermal load simulations using EnergyPlus were utilized in simulation. The results of the study achieved the required daylight levels with significant reduction of energy consumption levels of cooling load. This shows the affordance of the parametric IGP shading screens in façade treatment for achieving both efficient daylight and energy performance in educational design studio in hot arid climates.

summary Utilization of computer-aided architectural design CAAD in architectural design studio has its problems. Recently, CAAD has been over used within education, , and applied, presumably, more efficiently in professional contexts.. Noticeably, time available for the application of CAAD in architectural firms outweights that of academy. Consequently, it has to be utilized effectively and efficiently in the design studio. The current study proposes and discusses techniques to expand and consolidate CAAD utilization in the design studio by analysing stages of work of design professionals, as well as the utilization of CAAD in architectural firms, in the first phase. The second phase looks at the stages of work in the design studio academically. Later, we conduct a survey and categorization of the Egyptian schools of architecture, to identify the mechanisms of their CAAD applications. We aim to improve the synergies between academia and professional practice and, in this respect, we hold a comparison between the professional context and the academic context with emphasis on the pedagogical aspects of architecture in design studio. The third part makes proposals to bridge the gap between the professional practices in the applications of CAAD and academic practices via enhancement of architectural technology-based learning milieu. The proposed techniques are applied and examined in the design studio. They aim to establish the parallelism between academic objectives and professional and technological objectives.

summary Biomimicry and computational design are two growing fields of research and practice in architecture for their potential in performative and sustainable design, among many other benefits. Cooling loads are posing serious energy problems in hot climatic cities as in Cairo and Alexandria. Attempting to solve these problems, this research turned to botanical inspirations for ideas in order to improve thermoregulation of the building skin. One of these ideas was chosen and implemented using computational software in the design of a parametric vertical shading screen for a typical office room in Cairo. The challenge was to minimize cooling loads as much as possible without compromising daylight requirements. An evolutionary solver was used to optimize results and environmental simulations were performed before and after the proposed screen to assess its performance and evaluate this biomimetic-computational approach to design.

title Spatio-Temporally Navigable Representation and Communication of Urban Cultural Heritage

summary Virtual environments are effective tools for the representation and communication of cultural heritage. We suggest that an interactive, immersive and dynamic navigation of the virtual representation of the urban environment will not only convey the essence of the culture and the changes it underwent in a more comprehensible manner, but will engender a 'sense of place'—genius loci— in the visitors. This cognitive mode will help them learn about much more than the geometry and materiality of the city: it will make them 'feel' part of the event itself. By presenting a socially shareable experience, we aim to introduce the medium the character of a genuine place, and make it a social venue for active exploration, discussion and interaction.

Virtual reality surpasses both traditional media and 3D-models and offers what they cannot. The affordances of the medium, however, also have the potential to destroy the sense of place it strives to engender. It can do so by allowing a kind of ‘time travel,’ to different periods in the history of the site. This ability locates visitors not only spatially, but also temporally. Everyday experience helps us understand the meaning of spatial boundedness, but does not prepare us to deal with temporal boundedness: sensing the presence of fellow visitors at different times. In this paper we describe our experiences in producing spatio-temporally navigable virtual reconstructions of two distinct culturally significant historic sites: the neolithic village of Çatalhöyük, and the medieval city of Cairo. We demonstrate the use of spatio-temporal navigation through a dynamic, chronologically layered model that can be browsed by multiple users at the same time. Such a dynamic system for representing chronological architectural events requires the extension of our conception of place into the temporal domain. We introduce a new concept, temporal field of view (t-FOV) and discuss how it can aid us in resolving an intrinsic challenge introduced by the representation of the temporal dimension in virtual environments.
