summary The following pictures come from a work in progress at the School of Architecture of Laval University, done in collaboration with the "Centre de développement économique et urbain de la Ville Québec" (CDEU). The 3D models from which the pictures were generated, have been created by students at the School of architecture (part of this work is illustrated). The project started at the beginning of the summer 97 by the modeling competition of Notre-Dame-de-Grâce Church, located in Québec City Saint-Sauveur neighborhood. The works continued during the summers of 1997 and 1998 and will resume this summer. To date, this ongoing project has given to nine students the opportunity to model 19 churches to a level of details useful to professionals.

summary The research topic of this paper exemplifies design optimization techniques of a hotel/office tower in Central China (Nanjing city), which faces subtropical humid climate throughout the year. The main intent of the project is to fi nd optimized design solution with the aid of parametric design tools and Visual Basic Scripting techniques (in Rhino Script & Grasshopper) combined with intuitive design process. In any urban context, we firmly believe that architectural design is a responsive phenomenon, which faces diverse interaction with the user & the local climate. The building design of the proposed tower acknowledges these responsive factors of the design with the environment along with building users or residents. Consequently, we strive to develop a sustainable design solution, which is ecologically efficient and psychologically conducive to the wellbeing of the user. We developed our intuitive design product with complex computational design toolsets to leverage design and energy efficiency. In this procedure, we draw major design concepts and geometrical typologies from natural systems in the form of bio mimicry or biologically inspired design process. Overall, this research paper outlines the significance and relevant benefi ts of the combination of intuitive design (from experience, expertise and architects skills) with parametric scripting tools.

summary The executive power of computation, once utilized to inform the discrete pieces of design, ‘component making’ rapidly became one of the trends in architectural design. Idea of components conceptually transformed the enclosing forms of architecture into subdivision surfaces that act as fields for components to aggregate on. While a certain level of variety is achieved via manipulation of components, the characteristics of the surfaces become overlooked via common use of parametric (UV) subdivision. This paper, with a critical look at the current component field generation techniques, focuses on alternative methods of transforming a surface into a digital ground for component aggregation. Series of studies address and deal with various pitfalls of component design and application on software-dictated UV subdivision surfaces.

summary Emergent design tools, with enhanced modeling and parametric manipulation capabilities, are encouraging the exploration of new geometric typologies in the field of architecture. Designers are not only finding more opportunities to work with geometries of higher complexities but are also becoming able to manipulate their designs with simple formulations. After a decade of familiarity with free form modeling tools, architects must now become more aware of the critical relationship between design and construction. When a design is performed without taking the constraints of construction into account the inefficient method of geometric post-rationalization becomes necessary. Thus, the knowledge of the rationale should be applied from the very beginning of the design processes, and digital models should be informed and controlled while being developed. This paper will present analytical strategies and methods for working with nonstandard geometries in a geometrically and parametrically controlled environment. Each method is supported with custom scripts which run in both parametric and non-parametric computer aided design (CAD) platforms. Each script and method is manipulated for the next project and the computational tools created build up a library of surface generation, manipulation, and subdivision tools. This library later becomes a source for office-wide use of surface manipulation.

Generative, intelligent, digital, parametric, associative, biomimetic designs sound valuable, whereas the integrity remains questionable. The tool, enabling designer to play with forms, patterns, models is neither granting him the knowledge nor teaching him the appropriate technique. Are we really able to digest and master all the information we’re subject to, to be used in our designs? Or do we have much to learn about the investigations of the renaissance men to reach to a level of proficiency?

summary Realistic renderings contain a large amount of information about the spatial, geometric and material properties of prospective buildings that can directly affect design decisions, yet these images are most of the time used as after-the-fact representational visualizations. In this paper we propose a model to make the realistic images a very part of the design and decision making process. If we are to utilize realistic images during earlier decision making stages of the design processes, then we should develop experiential workflows in which we can create and interact with immersive realistic images real-time. We take several steps towards establishing an interactive rendering-animating-editing workflow that enables the designers to work with real-time rendered stereoscopic animations. In our system, we use realism to create an immersive exploration environment, as opposed to underutilizing it to represent a static moment.

summary Computers help run visually creative processes, yet they remain visually, sensually and tactually distant [1]. This research introduces a drawing and painting process that infuses digital and analog ways of visual-making [2]. It implements a computationally broadened workflow for hand-drawing and painting, and develops a custom drawing apparatus. Primary goal is to develop a computationally generative painting system while retaining embodied actions and tactile material interactions that are intrinsic to the processes of handdrawing and watercolor painting. A non-symbolic, open-ended and trace-based shape calculation system emerges.

summary At the early stages of the architectural design process, general decisions are made with respect to a building's spatial organization. These concern its overall shape and size, as well as its internal organization. Characteristics of a building's spatial organization, however vaguely and incomplete-ly described at those stages, may have serious consequences for various aspects of its performan-ce. Those consequences are often difficult to determine in advance and emerge only during time-consuming elaboration of the design or even not before the actual building is in operation. A designer's ability of foreseeing them is much dependent on his knowledge of existing buildings. More particularly, it depends on his understanding of the performances of types rather than specific precedents. In general terms, the present study aims at supporting design decisions at the early stages by improving the awareness and understanding of types. Many architectural handbooks particularly those in the domain of housing attempt to support access to and acquisition of such knowledge through so-called typologies, in which types are described by means of graphical descriptions, and illustrated with one or more precedents. The effectiveness of such books as design supporting tools is limited by the fact, among others, that type descriptions are not based upon a well-defined representation of spatial organization. This leads to uncertainty as to the handbook's completeness and to unreliability of performances associated with types. The present study explores the possibilities of dealing with these shortcomings. It is limited to the domain of the complex residential building. After a review of existing work in the area of housing typology, the study presents and discusses the following products: (i) a type-representation of basic arrangements of dwellings, that is, a representation which retains only the most general characteristics of spatial organization, (ii) a demonstration of the potential of this representation; this demonstration involves the enumeration and limited exploration of certain ranges of type descriptions.

summary The present paper explores the implementation of a light-duct in order to equalise daylight distribution in an office space. While the illuminance level near windows in a building tends to be higher than that necessary for the working environment, artificial lighting is often used to ensure that the workspace further away from the windows has the required level of illuminance. Equalising daylight distribution from the periphery to the inner part would thus provide signifi cant advantages for energy-efficient lighting as well as the fl exible and efficient use of offi ce space. In order to achieve this goal, anti-glare devices in the perimeter zone such as louvers and daylight distribution devices such as light-ducts are required. In this paper, we focus on light-ducts in the first instance, with an emphasis on their two key components for controlling the direction of daylight, namely inner reflectors and bottom extractors.

summary Nous qui devons enseigner à nos élèves les techniques du dessin traditionnel avons trop souvent recours à des recettes et normes mnémotechniques venues des ateliers et studios d'art traditionnels. De telles stratégies, souvent personnelles et intransférables, s'appuyant sur de longues heures de pratique, sont difficilement assimilables pour des élèves qui ne disposent pas de tant de temps pour s'entraîner, ni d'une telle expérience perceptive; dans le meilleur des cas, il en résulte un dessin stéréotypé ou, s'il est brillant, c'est que l'élève savait déjà dessiner. Comme nous considérons que le dessin traditionnel et le CAD sont les deux outils fondamentaux qui permettent à tout architecte d'exprimer ses idées, il nous a semblé opportun de chercher les points communs entre ces deux disciplines. Dans un discours illustré de dessins d'auteurs divers, nous essaierons de démontrer comment, si nous utilisons exactement les mêmes critères que ceux qui régissent un ordinateur dans l'interprétation de ce qu'il voit, le résultat de la représentation est pleinement expressif et efficace. Si nous sommes capables de rationaliser cette méthodologie et de la transmettre à nos élèves, nous aurons répondu à notre double objectif: leur enseigner à dessiner par des techniques traditionnelles, dûment rationalisées et comprendre un peu mieux le fonctionnement des ordinateurs.

summary The idea of ‘city’ has now surpassed its physical concept. The emergence of the Internet and the growing development of information and communication technologies (ICT) have changed the behaviour of our society in the past decade and revolutionised the traditional ways of representing space. The classic 2D (floor plans, sections and elevations) and 3D representations have been gradually replaced by 3D digital models that can reproduce buildings and places in a virtual environment.3D digital models are tools that enable a wide range of applications in urban planning and management, especially in architectural and data documentation where they allow the analysis of theoretical scenarios such as: 1) representation of the past, considering the procedures needed to restore the heritage; 2) visualisation of the present, to enable dissemination and communication of the city as it is; and, 3) simulation of the future, with the model being used to visualise and experiment with architectural objects, even those at a design stage. The main contribution of this work is to present an urban application developed into a GeoBIM tool, ESRI City Engine Software (CE), that integrates GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and BIM (Building Information Modelling) concepts. Finally, to enhance its potential, three spatial analyses were conducted.

summary This research work is being financed by the "Instituto de Ciencias de la Educacion, I. CE., Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, U.P.V. and currently taking place at the "Taller2 de Proyectos Arquitectdnicos." We have placed CAD systems on drafting tables, so students can learn to apply different media and tools, both digital and traditional, in their design processes. To integrate CAD systems into the design studio we have developed a methodology upon which to relate the "Mechanics of the digital tool," with the often elusive and seldom explicit, "Mechanics of designing". We see architectural design as a process that can benefit from the use of computer systems through modelling (representation), and rendering (static or dynamic visualization). Digital modelling tools are powerful instruments to simulate and visualize (perceive) formal and spatial arrangements, under certain conditions of superficial appearance and light. Geometry composition, texture, light projection, rendering and animation, are the keys to understanding a digital modelling system as an extension of our design process. We introduce and explain each one of these categories, as it applies to architectural design and to three dimensional CAD systems. We present samples of student work following this method.

summary Efficiency and innovative problem solving are contradictory requirements for product development (PD), and both requirements must be satisfied in companies that strive to remain or to become competitive. Efficiency is strongly related to ”doing things right”, whereas innovative problem solving and creativity is focused on ”doing the right things”. Engineering design, which is a sub-process within PD, can be viewed as problem solving or a decision-making process. New technologies in computer science and new software tools open the way to new approaches for the solution of mechanical problems. Product data management (PDM) technology and tools can enable concurrent engineering (CE) by managing the formal product data, the relations between the individual data objects, and their relation to the PD process. Many engineering activities deal with the relation between behavior and shape. Modern CAD systems are highly productive tools for concept embodiment and detailing. The finite element (FE) method is a general tool used to study the physical behavior of objects with arbitrary shapes. Since a modern CAD technology enables design modification and change, it can support the innovative dimension of engineering as well as the verification of physical properties and behavior. Concepts and detailed solutions have traditionally been evaluated and verified with physical testing. Numerical modeling and simulation is in many cases a far more time efficient method than testing to verify the properties of an artifact. Numerical modeling can also support the innovative dimension of problem solving by enabling parameter studies and observations of real and synthetic behavior. Simulation-driven design is defined as a design process where decisions related to the behavior and performance of the artifact are significantly supported by computer-based product modeling and simulation. A framework for product modeling, that is based on a modern CAD system with fully integrated FE modeling and simulation functionality provides the engineer with tools capable of supporting a number of engineering steps in all life-cycle phases of a product. Such a conceptual framework, that is based on a moderately coupled approach to integrate commercial PDM, CAD, and FE software, is presented. An object model and a supporting modular modeling methodology are also presented. Two industrial cases are used to illustrate the possibilities and some of the opportunities given by simulation-driven design with the presented methodology and framework.

C’est la forge des clous et du sciage des planches qui naissent de la pente vers la mer et croissance du navire” (Saint-Exupéry, 1948). The paper describes and analyses a course held at Stuttgart University, Germany dealing with the application of parameters in an architectural design process and the transformation of this process into a relational digital model. The course is introduced with special emphasis on its tasks, aims and the implicit didactic concept. It is also investigated if and how a design approach resulting from the identification and determination of parameters can lead to a creation of a unique shape. Finally the impact of the practical exercises for the final design is evaluated. The course’s structure is enhanced by the “Vorklasse” from Bauhaus and the conviction that using software is taught most effectively by working on an own specific project. At the very beginning the students get the chance to gain experiences with parameters through preliminary practical exercises, like folding and modelling and analysing. Then the use of the software is taught in several compact sessions in parallel to the design process. The impact of the early practical exercises on the subsequent design process is remarkable. Special attention is therefore given to this aspect. The aim of the lessons is to produce a proposal for the design task.
